Do our Epics have 2 mics?
People cannot hear me on a call unless I'm in speakerphone. It seems as though they can hear me blowing into the mic during a regular call if I blow into the hole on the bottom right (plz hold the 6th grade jokes).

I don't think we have two mics. I believe that the sensitivity of the mic is increased when in speakerphone mode.
Interesting, perhaps I have something stuck deep inside.
Or I have a setting snafoo, though I doubt it, since I have clean wipe flashed 4 roms in the past 24 hours.

Anyway to up the sensitivity manually until I can figure it out?

I had a similar (actually opposite issue) as the OP. When I was on speakerphone, no one could hear me. But when I held and spoke on the phone the traditional away (in other words phone up to my ear and not on speakerphone), then people could hear me. Tried reflashing EC05 then OTA to EI22 and that did not fix the issue. Determined it was a hardware issue. Ended up going to Sprint and having phone replaced (I had TEP).
I read recently, maybe today, that our phones have two mics. Unfortunately, I can't remember where I read that, so I can't back it up with a source! Based on the description of both of your problems, it seems logical that the phone has and uses two different mics depending on whether the user is in speakerphone mode or not.
This phone indeed does have two mics. The second microphone is used only for speaker phone, and is located in the right hand portion of the earpiece grille.
What's unfortunate is that although that mic is part of an array that includes the front camera and keyboard and is easily replaceable, the main microphone is on the board and requires the phone to be swapped.

This is actually a pretty common symptom of bad mics that come in to our store: no one can hear you talk or even yell, but for some reason, the mic will pick you up blowing in to it. I suspect its because your simply putting more physical pressure on the mic, but I've never been able to come to a good conclusion.

partly correct- it's on the board with the keyboard, but not the camera, and doesn't require a phone swap. the circuit board can be replaced; i watched the tech replace mine, in store, in about 15 minutes. i was impressed they had the part in stock.
(no insurance, no cost either)

Ahh you know, your right (look at me, the tech forgetting what the internals of my old phone look like).
BOTH mics are on the keyboard array...it's sticky on one side, and adheres to one side of a gray frame that nestles the motherboard on the other side.
Either way, your correct, the mic is replaceable. Unlike every other phone i work on lol.

Sinced I sit the phone on its face so the speaker is facing me, that might be why nobody can hear me while I got them on speaker phone. Learn somthing new all the time here.
Ugh, sounds like ill have to send it in to Samsung again. I have squaretrade 2yr, perhaps ill wait a couple weeks until my year warranty is up with Samsung and have then take care of it.
Thanks everyone for your help.

This exact thing happened to me after toying around with voodoo sound.
Flash to stock and see if it fixes it. You will need to do this anyways for repair.

Digi, I tried a couple different versions of CleanGB, which do not have a voodoo kernel, so unfortunately I don't think that will have the same result for me...at least, I surely hope not, haha, I just mailed it off to Sammy last night.

Just picked up my new M8 yesterday. After using it for a day I have noticed a crackling nosie coming from the top speaker, almost as if its blown. Is anyone else having this problem or am I just unlucky?
Mine does it on calls and not music

Don't have a speaker problem but just noticed a defect on the top speaker right below the camera. The covering is coming off slightly and isn't level with the screen. You can tell the glue isn't very strong it pushes back in and then come s right back when you remove your finger. Gonna try to get it replaced from T-Mobile. You have 14days to get a replacement I highly recommend doing it if you're not satisfied.

No crackling on my speakers. I've heard several people having this issue with the M8 from other carriers. I would definitely take it back and exchange it.

Yea thats what I figured I would do. I found a video on YouTube of a guy claiming a toothbrush could fix it, doesn't work! Now the only problem is finding a store in my area that has them in stock!
I just picked up mine yesterday and it has the same issue.

I'm glad to know its not just me! My friend has the Dev version and the difference between the two is very noticible. However it isn't terrible if the volume is under half, so until I can get a new one that's how its going to stay
Took mine back to the store. They tried the demo phone and got the same results. So I'm waiting on my replacement. Unfortunately if its the same, I might have to switch to the s5

Same issue here, pretty annoying. Going to take it back later today, but not sure if I'll be able to get an exchange - as others have mentioned, most stores are sold out. Pretty lame of HTC, now I'll have $636 burning a hole in my pocket for the next week or so - 636 that could go towards an S5 or something. :/

I have about a dozen stores in my area, all are sold out. One guy told me they only got like 5 of them in, wtf.
My store finally got some in! Walked in, put it on the desk, the lady said "Speaker Problem?" ran to the back, got me a new one and I was out in 10 min. New device works great!

Yeah I'm on my 3rd one and it finally seems to be OK. The hard part is finding a store that has them in stock or admits they have them when you tell them you want to do an exchange. :/
Anyways, one the sales guys told me they've had a lot of S5's coming back too, due to various misc issues.

Ummm... i would put it very close to the noise my car speaker made when it was recently blown... Again only coming out of the top speaker when it was turned up. It just sounded like a rattle... The one thing that I really noticed it on was MKBHD's review on the Dot Cover Case. 10 seconds into him talking it had already sounded crappy. Thats the video I used to reference my new one.

Speaker volume, troubleshooting steps?
I compared the speaker volume and quality of my HTC one M8 speakers with my Samsung note 2 and found out the volume level of both the devices was more or less the same, but the HTC offered a little more bass.
The sound is very less at 50% volume level and drastically increases after 80%-100%
I am not sure if the speakers of my device are up to the mark. How do you guys troubleshoot the speakers sound? Any specific method or just relying on ears?

Ive just been going off of my ears... Again depending on what I was listening to it was sometimes hard to hear. But I used MKBHD's review of the Dot Cover case to go off of. I could tell in the first 10 seconds.
1 year warranty
Just wanna remind you guys that tmobile has a 1 year guarantee on any phone you purchase from them, so even if you're past your 14 days you can still call customer service and get them to send you a replacement. The only thing the 1 year warranty doesn't cover is physical damage like a broken screen/body or water damage. I've had tmo for over 10 years and have gotten a bunch of replacements on phones that developed issues.
I am having this crackling, popping, static annoying, irritating, hurting noise during call... actually mine is at&t.. I bought two of them and they had the same issue.. Also lot other issues highlighted in various forums (like bluetooth, battery life, etc)
Hi folks. Had the Nexus for about 3 weeks and it's been great. Really do like a lot about it but I have a couple issues. First one I know can only be fixed by a case and that's that when handled it creaks and sounds flimsy. So annoying though. I know it's plastic but still I feel like I'm breaking it. Lastly when on a call I hear a chirping/metal ringing noise. Sounds like the earpiece speaker is loose or just bad quality. Any one with these issues ?

First one i agree.. phone build quality is not great.. I am using a case and i dont hear annoying sounds anymore.. For the second one i dont have that issue. May be faulty unit? Get a replacement
Just take of the back cover and put a slim piece of foam between the battery and the back cover. You will be surprised how much more solid and premium the device feels without creaks. It is really easy and there are a lot of posts/comments on that matter on xda or reddit

About the noise you can hear out of the earpiece when talking try lowering the volume a little. I could hear something similar to what you describe an it was earpiece saturation. I lowered the volume a tick and everything perfect.

I have already had to replace one pixel XL because of the ear speaker was so badly distorted that I could not hear well. Now on my replacement it happening again. I have had it for 3 months now. The only thing that has changed recent was the May security update but I'm not sure that would mess with the ear speaker.
Has anyone ever had this issue with the ear speaker. I have seen plenty of issues with the bottom speaker breaking up but not the ear piece. I really don't want to go threw the replacement process again

I have a similar issue of slight distortion from earpiece and Bluetooth too.
It's noticeable especially coming from iPhone 7 and Samsung s8 that have high quality earpiece.
I bought mine few days ago second hand so I don't know if earpiece was like this from the start or broke down after an update.
I suppose we should wait till next update and see if it gets fixed

You and I are in exactly the same boat. I replaced mine this spring with a terrible ear speaker and I just went through the replacement process again. Waiting on my replacement to arrive. I'm really surprised that we aren't seeing more about this issue online since both of us have had this happen twice so far. It's got me a little concerned about what will happen when the 1 year warranty runs out...

Based on how Google treated their Nexus 6P customers after the one year warranty ran out my guess is they will tell you you're screwed --especially if it turns out to be a widespread issue. The speakers on the Pixel XL are actually pretty terrible when they are working properly. The only thing I can suggest to the poster who is reluctant to RMA his phone again is to try a factory reset first. It's possible the audio drivers got corrupted at some point and that a factory reset would fix the problem.

Yeah I'm worried about the after 1 year. And my 2nd replacement they just sent me has a bad GPS chip in it. I can't get any GPS location. I complied enough and asked to be compensated for receiving a defective device. Google offered me a refund for my original purchase price if I return the phone. I'm on the fence about what to do. I don't want to be stuck with a device I can't hear on after 1 year and really like this phone. I may just return it and hold it for the pixel 2 while trying to use a old device

That sounds like a good idea, actually because Google likely won't help you once the warranty expires. Given the recent history of problems with the Google devices going back to the last two Nexus models if you do buy a Pixel 2 you should seriously consider springing for the two year extended warranty. Your Pixel is no longer worth the original purchase price and will be worth much less still after the Pixel 2 comes out. If Google will refund your full purchase price just months before the Pixel 2 comes out that sounds like a too good to pass up deal to me.
I've had my Pixel phone for 3 months and I'm getting the distortion on the speaker. It's so bad I can barely hear people on the other end talking. My service provider is saying to bring it in for repair and it will be covered but I'm worried since I keep hearing of the same problem.
We are on our second Moto Z2 Force. The first one had a pretty bad feedback/squeal and static in the ear piece. The rep at Best Buy heard it too and swapped the phone out right away. The second phone doesn't have the squeal that the first one had, but it still has a static in the background as a phone conversation happens. It is quite low but it is always there. It's as if the gain is up too high. Anyone else notice this static in the background??
(I also have a Note 8 and a LG V20 that are totally silent when on a call).
EDIT: My daughter reports it on hers too and especially with the headphone dongle plugged in and not playing music. I sense a 14 day return window transaction coming up.... Phone is awesome otherwise!

Greetings everyone,
As of yesterday evening I'm a new and first time owner of a Motorola smart phone (I came from the lg v20). Prior to that a Samsung...so I'm wondering if my issue is something I should be seriously concerned with or if it can be fixed in an update considering it's something I've never had to deal with before.
To get to the point my speaker phone whether I'm on a call or using the GPS is making a crackling sound and its slightly annoying. It doesn't happen AT ALL when I play music on full blast. My phone is the US ATT model. Is this something that could be fixed with an update or should I swap it asap ? Thx
As far as the replies go to that post 3 out of 4 people have the exact same issue. Some on T Mobile.
I went in to the ATT store yesterday and even the demo unit was doing it.
Interesting. Looks like my wife and girls want me to return these and go with a Pixel2. They'll keep their old phones until they arrive. It's unfortunate as Moto's are great phones. They came from the Droid Turbo and Droid Turbo 2. It's totally a defect in manufacturing. Maybe the QC needs to be increased at the factory to not let these defective units out. I'm also betting that not all Moto Z2's share this problem.

My wife and daughter love the slim battery mod by the way. They were set to get the projector mod too. I'm going to see if Best Buy minds swapping the phones again. (My daughter hasn't swapped but my wife is on her second). I'd like it if she could keep it since she's very familiar with the Droid family. We'll see later today when we drop by...

I can confirm this intermittent crackling on the speaker in one of two of my force devices. It's a driver issue, as it only happens "sometimes". I too, have the scratchiness when using the output dongle.
I wouldn't recommend this device, till they release an update.
I bought mine for teens, so small issues like this don't really matter. But if this is your main device, and you plan on using it for multimedia (music, YouTube on speaker etc), might want to wait.
It's a shame since it's a pretty cool device
ive been noticing this as well, hoped it will be fixed in an update or custom rom, but if the consensus is hardware i might be screwed and will just have to deal with it
it is intermittent, i dont hear it every time i make a call but it does pop up now and then. dont hear it when playing music
i hope it is a software issue... I'm on my 3rd Z2 and I don't really want to get a 4th, each time I am dropping $25 on a screen protector
For all of you having problems
I created a topic on the official Motorola Lenovo forums that has mod attention. I'd appreciate if you could put your input into the conversation so we can get this resolved.

only 2 problems really...
first one would not connect to voicemail, tried different, sim, etc. Wouldnt connect. Tmo replaced it.
2nd was fine except the group text issue, I just fell for the Note 8 hype.
didn't like the note, jumped back to the Z2 Force for the $500 deal.
so that gets us to the 3rd Z2 Force.
This one still has the group text issue, is stuck on the june security patch, and gets that static noise.
it is possible the other 2 had the static, I dont use the actual phone part much. But the other two got updates to be on August

For the group text issue, consider using the signal messaging app. It's more secure, which is great, but it enable all messaging actions perfect.
The speaker and USB-C audio scratchiness is just a nature of the device I think. It's bothersome on both my devices.
I do hope that software fixes it, as the $500 + FREE projector, really is an awesome deal.

That is the price of the Verizon Flexible Glass Display Protector.
I had it on last year's Z Force Droid and I never had a problem. I have read forums on these devices here, Reddit, AndroidCentral, Moto forum, etc.
and i dont think I've read a complaint on the Verizon Flexible Glass Display Protector. For every other screen protector, it seems like a mixed bag of reviews.
so if it works, and i like it, $25 is no big deal.. having to buy a 4th one on the other hand.... that's pretty brutal
