Stuck on "Entering Recovery..." after trying to update TWRP version - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to update the version of TWRP I was using(v2.7.0.2) on my HTC One M8 (rooted) to v2.8.7.0 using the TWRP Manager App that I downloaded from the play store. The screen is stuck on "Entering Recovery...". I would appreciate any advice anyone can give me about how to get out of it. I tried holding down the power button it does nothing. The screen is frozen. How do I turn it off / get it to boot properly? Please help.. :crying:

Holding down the power button for what feels like an eternity got me through this when it happened last. I also had to flash TWRP again.
Alternatively, I believe holding both the power button and volume down during this stage is supposed to work. The only other way would be to either grin and bear a battery drain shut down (Not good if the device won't take a charge afterwards), or pop open the phone / remove battery.. Which I'm sure you can find a guide for both here and online. Hopefully it won't come to that, though!

[Q] Did I Brick My Phone? Please Help

I booted my phone into recovery mode with ClockworkMod Recovery, and when I got to the screen with all of the options, every option resulted in a blank black screen. Now I can't even reboot my phone. I have tried taking out the battery and retrying multiple times, but it just keeps coming back... Is there any way to fix this?
Do a search for odin. You'll be able to revert to a stock (unrooted) state. From there, you can start anew.
Good luck!

I thought this might be an option, will try it... However, if i'm not mistaken, odin requires you to boot the phone into the download mode (holding 1 and power button), but i am unable to do this. As soon as I put the battery in, it goes to the Clockwork screen.

Make sure you use the camera button to select an option in clockworkmod. If you press the home button I believe the screen turns black.
Hummm. is the battery the sole power source? (i.e., not charging or usb'd up)

[SOLVED] Possible Brick

I flashed @Fenny's deodexed m8 stock rom. During the flash the phone rebooted to the splash screen. Now the phone will not turn off when holding the power button. I confirmed the hash sum before flashing. Flashed through TWRP 2.7.0.2. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. I need to know how to turn my phone off (without adb since I'm at work). From there I can get back to recovery and restore the stock ROM.

Try holding the phone close to a light source then try to reboot it. Reboot it holding the Volume down key so it reboots into the bootloader.

Do you know about how long I should hold down the buttons? I have held it under a florescent light that is directly over my desk for a couple of minutes while doing that and it doesn't do anything.

It should happen after about 10 seconds. The reason for light source is because HTC doesn't want the phone to reboot in your pocket, etc ...

Whelp. Holding under the light source seems to do nothing. This is what I was afraid would happen if I bought a phone that didn't have a removable battery. :/ Are there any other methods that might work? I am downloading adb right now.

IDK that's always worked for me. Try holding the power button down harder maybe, I know it sits a little flush and you may not be pressing it down fully.
Great Success!!!
Okay. Finally got it to work. I had to hold volume up + power to get the phone to reboot. When the screen turned black I changed to the volume down while still holding the power button. This booted me to HBOOT. Then I was able to select recovery and boot there just fine. I am now restoring to my stock backup.
@SmiLey497 Thanks so much for your help! Your fast replies and explanation helped a lot! :good:
I think that I now need to go home and change my pants. Lol!
EDIT: Stock backup booted perfectly. No more paperweight.

Well if those didn't solve your problem what I did was let my M8 run out of battery and then plugged it into my computer holding power+volume down and that allowed me to get into the bootloader and then into fastboot. I then erased the cache and entered recovery where I had a backup ready.
I'm experiencing the same problem, and still working on solving it. But for those who are stuck in the boot screen and need to shut off their phone so that they can boot up into recovery (power + vol down), hold down BOTH volume buttons and the power button and the phone will shut off in a few seconds. I couldn't find this anywhere and was getting annoyed waiting for the juice to run out so I tried a few things and this worked.
edit: turns out it's just volume UP and power to 'battery pull' the phone, not both, although that will work because you're pushing on up

You can also try this if you're not willing to wait for the battery to drain. I also ran into that very same problem, being stuck on the htc splash screen.. However this is how I fixed it. Like one of the posters above i too held the volume button up while at the same time holding down the power button. My HTC One M8 would just reboot back to the splash screen. So, i went through all of the steps above again but this time as the screen went off still holding the power button down. I immediately slid my finger from volume up to down. I continued holding it in the volume down position until the boot loader come up. I selected recovery from there and did a cache wipe and restored a NAND backup. I hope this helps someone.
Found a pretty easy fix
It's a somewhat common problem as I can tell,w hen the device stops on the splash screen (where it says "POWERED by Android") ,, and it has a pretty easy fix, which does not require drain the battery or erase the cache from ADB and so on ! What you do is, you hold down Volume UP + Power Button and keep it pressed till the device will re-restart itself and will boot in to the system (unless you completely f-ed up your system).
Good luck
I have found a way

Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Power button until you see a black screen. As soon as you see it press the Volume Down key and the Power button at the same time. This should get you to your bootloader.

Hold down the power botton +vol. up for about 20 seconds. When the screen goes black switch holding vol. up to holding in vol. down.
You should boot into fastboot.

If you're not on 4.4.4 firmware you should update to it. It's already a well known fact that running ROMs with out dated firmware WILL result in excessively long bootup times(10mins + ) .

Did it actually start up again or just shut itself off? if so you can still just press Volume Down + Power to get into bootloader.

Once it reboots you won't really be able to get in, well I couldn't when I tried. As soon as the screen goes dark you should immediately have the volume down key pressed, I'm talking about a second at most in between.
If the phone is completely off it's easy enough to just hold volume down and power for a couple of seconds until it goes into bootloader. When you do the hard reset you have to hold the power button and slide down to volume down quickly before it boots up.
You didn't still have fastboot checked in the settings did you?

OH SH*T! I still have mine checked. It doesn't work any more for me (normal boot times), but I haven't been unchecking it when messing with stuff because I'm not realizing/ forgetting that it is on.
I should probably fix that before I get myself into trouble.:good:

I'm just curious, was your phone fully charged when you were flashing the ROM? It sounds like a battery problem, but I could be wrong.
Always make sure you have lots of battery before flashing anything. The way it won't stay on is really weird. You could try the ROM's forum. Maybe you might find an answer there. Sorry.

Phone is giving error reports loop I need help Bad.

Phone gives error reports when booted Help my HTC One m8 went ballistic after I tried to install lollipop. For reference I have a sprint (unconnected) Htc One m8 Harmon Karman edition with Ł launcher as a launcher. I went to settings and found an update. The update download and then installed. When the phone went to boot it booted then instead of taking me to the home screen, it took me to a white page with a loop of error reports of apps not working. I can't get into the phone at all. I tried to boot in recovery but that did nothing. Please help I'm desperate. The pictures show examples of the errors I get them for different apps and hitting buttons to send reportso does nothing but give another report. Please help fix this.

What does that mean exactly? Can you get into bootloader? Do you get a red triangle when you select recovery from bootloader?
Hold power and vol up for several seconds to force a reboot. The moment the screen goes dark to reboot, let go of those buttons and just hold vol down until the bootloader screen appears.
fixed

If you can't get into bootloader (but can force a reboot), its because you didn't do the button combo correctly. Either you started pressing vol down too late, or let go of it too early.
Bootloader will always work as long as the screen comes on.
