Screen unresponsive - ZenFone 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, in last few weeks i have a strange issue with my touchscreen, it is getting unresponsive randomly, and all that helps me to restore to normal is getting the screen off with the upper button, and on again after about 30 seconds. I am on a stock rom version 160, tried to flash again, factory reset, wipe cache partition, uninstall all apps, nothing helps. But, ive noticed, that it happens often when i am charging the phone with the car charger. Please help, is anyone have the same issue?
The model is ZE551ML 4gb/64gb

Q: Is my device defective?

Ok here's the deal, I have my device about 3 months and never had a problem. Since last week my phone kept turning off when I'm on the home screen, restarts when screen is off. So I was advice to try and hard reset my device which I did bunch of times and problems still continues. I did not install any apps when I hard reset it and I don't know what to do????

Random restarting can happen with custom ROMs. It's happened to me with CM a while back. With you being on a custom ROM, that may be what is causing your issue.
Only way to really determine the cause is to view your logcat, which is tricky because it is cleared on a reboot. This app: aLogcat (free) might be useful. You can set it to save your logcats to your sdcard in intervals, that way it is persistant through a reboot.
You can monitor that and see what exactly is causing your issue.
You can also flash back to stock and see if the issue persists.
If you are running stock rom then your main board might be going bad. Someone sent me an article the other day about this happening to people. Apparently Samsung fixes it for free.

[Q] Zenfone 2 auto power off and data network off problem

Hi All,
I bought a zenfone 2 yesterday from Hong Kong and upgraded the phone to latest firmware. However, I found the phone will auto power off when battery is below 33%. Once the phone is off, I won't be able to power on unless I recharge the battery up to some level.
In additions, the data connection (4G) sometimes not able to download data, or it suddenly turn off. What I need to do is to restart the phone to get it work.
Does anyone got the same problem above and have advise to resolve it?
Many thanks!

It sounds like a battery calibration error. If you are rooted, you could try fixing it with a calibration app. If else, RMA may be a better option.
Sounds like..I have not experienced this on my phone..not rooted. Another option may be to send it back for exchange? Worth a try?

I'm having this problem too... phone shuts down at 33-35%. I never saw the battery going lower than that. I'm running the last version of WW firmware, rooted. Tried a factory reset too but the problem is still there...Used some "calibration app" too but they didn't fix my problem. Gonna wait a few days and then do the RMA thing with amazon... Pretty pissed off, the phone is really nice but this thing is bugging me too much.
I just sent mine back to B&H. Mine was shutting down at 20%.
Seems like many people are having this issue.
I hope zenfone 2 #2 that I get next week will work.

Hello this issue is related to faulty battery. Nothing on software level will help. Go for Replacement.

Screen flicker when at full charge

I've noticed that when my battery is at full charge (~95%+) my screen starts to flicker around the edges of the screen. Anyone else had this problem? Using the 20150907 rom.
Jap, I also got that flickering around the edges. Don't know if that only occurs with nearly full charge but I know that I have this issue right from the beginning with the original rom.

Me too, but mine is the opposite. at low charge it flickers and is more with white background.
Hi there,
To days ago I had this problem the first time after unplugging from charger. Today it occurs with fully charged battery. I hope it's only a software bug. The actual firmware is installed.
Greetings Marco
Resolved: flickering has gone
Hi there,
Here's my way get rid of this flickering.
At first I rooted my ? then flashed Eragon 3.5 without erasing dalvik, cache, data and factory reset. Then I got the OTA on 3.8 and full update to 4.0
...but the issue was still there.
While the ? was still rooted I installed Titanium Backup and saved my favourite apps.
Then I cleared all partitions and did a factory reset in CWM. Then I installed Eragon 4.0 and restored my apps. Since four days I had no flickering anymore!
Try this way and post your experience.
Greetings Marco
Thanks I'll try that. I'm at 60 percent battery now and flickering has gone. It seems to come and go, maybe battery at higher charge affecting display... Weird one...

I had this issue on different charge values and not everyone the same. So I think it is independent from battery state. IMHO it is a software bug after OTA.
I tried your method but to no avail, screen flickering continues. It's very random though. Sometimes it only appears then I'm physically touching screen. Strange <br />

Nexus 5x stock flashlight freeze

Hello. Basically, the problem is with the flashlight, when I turn it on at the quick settings menu, the phone freezes and the only thing I can do is restarting phone via holding power button. Today I tried taking video with flashlight and phone also froze. I updated to Nougat and the problem is still here. The only thing is, I don't actually know if the problem was here when the phone had 6.0. MM out of the box, I did not test the flashlight and updated to 6.0.1.. Phone is not freezing when I take photos at night with flashbulb.
The phone is 2 days old, it's basically brand new.
Ah, I forgot to tell,I did factory reset twice and started from fresh, also wiped cache partition and nothing has changed.

Note 2 keeps restarting everytime!

Hi guys. A relative asked me if i can repair his note 2. I think his network was locked and the phone keeps restarting everytime. I flashed a new firmware on the phone. The one I use on mine..XXUFNG1, and also I went into recovery and clear data and cache after flashing. But still the phone keeps rebooting everytime. Why is that and how can I fix this?
Note : It's not bootloop or anything. You can switch on the phone, use it for like 5mins and then it freezes and restarts itself. And it goes on like that. Sometimes it doesn't restart also and you can use for more. But most of the time after 5mins, it restarts.

Everything stock..like I said! Before flashing to the newest rom too, everything was stock.
Was the phone dropped or exposed to moisture? Possible battery problem? Reboots even when connected to a charger?

Hi..thanks for reply. I tried another battery in it. The one I use myself. But it still restarts. I don't know if the phone was dropped or anything though. The relative just told me that it needs to be unlocked. Do you think it's software related? Or something is damaged in the phone?
Since it is running a stock ROM and still behaves this way after a factory reset, I think there is a hardware problem.
I might have a similar problem. I copy from another thread:
Hey guys,
I like this rom so far. But since 2 weeks I got an issue.
My phone randomly turns off, atleast I guess that's what happens. Sometimes the "notify" LED is on permanently but the display won't go on. To start the phone again I have to put out the battery and put it back in.
My battery is randomly empty pretty fast even if I just let the phone turned off. This happens like every 5 minutes.
I already bought a new battery but the problem hasn't changed.
What to do now? :>

I like the phone. It's over 5 years old and runs like the first day. Except it DOESN'T wake up anymore after a short time when the screen is off. I can press the power/home button as many times as I want and wait for 5 minutes, screen will still be off. Only way to "wake" it up again is to put the battery out and in again.
Currently I don't have enough money to buy a new phone and I can get a new motherboard for 25$. But I'm not sure if this will fix my problem.
I'm not even sure if this is the ROMs problem since it worked with all earlier versions of this rom perfectly and even the latest release worked for weeks/months.

As long as I leave the screen turned on the display/phone won't go off and I can use it as always. Even the battery don't drop drastically then.
It might be exposed to moisture tho. When I take a hot shower I'll leave it on the window sill and the room gets steamy.
ROM: [7.1.2 r24] LineageOS for N7100 [Unofficial] - Version from 08.10.2017
GAPPS: Open Gapps ARM 7.1 Aroma - 03.05.2017
Baseband: N7100XXUFND3
Ril and other stuff I don't know where to check.
Some years ago I had the SDS and the motherboard was changed without the EMMC bug.
Sometimes my phone only charges in slow mode too.
I try a clean install and newer pico gapps now. Maybe it will solve the problem. I'll reply then if it worked or not.
[EDIT]
Since my phone was low on battery I turned it off completly and put it on the charger. After an hour or so I wanted to look after it.
The green charging light stays on and if I want to turn the phone on nothing happens. The light stays on even after removing the charger.
Seems like a hardware, not a rom problem? Will changing the motherboard fix this?
[EDIT 2]
Quick update. I fully wiped/factory resetted and clean installed newest version of this ROM + newest mini pico GApps. Still the same problem. Gonna try it with another ROM/kernel now and if the problem persists it's a hardware fault.
[EDIT 3]
Fully wiped again and changed ROM+Kernel. Still the same problem.
