Where's my good battery life? - Galaxy Tab S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have never had good battery life on my Galaxy Tab S 8.4 ever since I got it in April of 2015. I did a battery test using the Geekbench app and it gets only 4-5 hours of life. And since this is just screen on time, my battery normally drains much faster. I've tried 4.4 Kitkat, 5.1.1 Lolipop, and even 6.0 Marshmellow with no real difference to battery life. I have also tried battery monitoring and battery doctor apps, as well as deleting the batterystats.bin file and even ripping my tablet apart and reseating the battery connector. I've thought about replacing the battery, but the only battery i can find is from NewPower99 and that's $60.00, way too much for a battery in my eyes.

Plenty of battery`s on eBay.

Keep your screen brightness as low as usable, avoid white or light screens as they use the most power it is a disadvantage of oled displays, I keep my display on auto -5

Downgrade to KitKat, as the other day i upgraded to lollipop and the battery was dropping 1% every other min its a joke. So i downgraded to KitKat and it gives me easy 3 days use and that's heavy use T705!

How to downgrade t705 to kitkat

I use a built-in feature to keep the screen toned down. In the display settings, there is a reading more feature where I select the apps I primarily use, including my default launcher Nova Launcher, and it tones the screen brightness down while those apps are in focus. Like right now while I'm using the Tapatalk app.

Head over to http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/ download your firmware and flash using odin it's real simple!

Found this over at Android Central as last few days my battery has been all over the place, as it was fine before. Anyway my battery dropped to 5% turned it off. Waited a minute or so, turned it back on bat was showing 45% wow so i'm draining it again Ive let it drop to 5% again this is the 3rd run now its showing 42% crazy credit goes to rouge-hawkins
I had the same issue on my brand new Galaxy Tab S LTE version with Exynos chip. I was like WTF on the battery because the moment i disconnect it from the charger it would soon drop to about 85% in 5 minutes. Then the dropping continuous in huge leaps like from 70% down to 30% while i'm just browsing the web. Then when it came down to 5% it would turn off. The moment i plug in the charger while the device is off the battery level would start at 40%. It was erratic for 2 weeks. Good news is i was able to resolve this without doing factory resets.
What i did was the moment the battery came down to like 5% i completely turn off the tab and turn it on , the tab reported a higher battery level like 45% then i continued using and until it drops again to a lower level like 3%. I power cycled the tab again and it reported battery level at around 24%. I used it again until battery level went to 3% and rebooted it, then it reported 12%.. used it again until the device really wont boot anymore. Then i used a slow charger. I used the 1A usb charger from my other phone (while off) and waited until 100% full. Then things became normal.. it reports battery level fine after. I also installed Clean Master and disabled some background apps and Samsung bloatware that i really dont use. Everything is ok now and im happy with my Tab S 8.4... hope this helps for those who got their device over the holidays. I resumed using the 2.1A default charger and issue doesnt seem to repeat anymore.

[Q] Battery Problem on my new Note 3!

Welcome! I've got Galaxy Note 3 for 3 days and i'm not satisfied about battery life. I read that it is possible to work on one charging even 3 days! I can work on my max 8h!!! I've got wifi/bt off, battery saver mode on, screen bright on auto and -5, only gsm (not LTE), no sync, no facebook app. When i'm working on my phone i can easily see how battery is discharging When the battery is full and after 10 usage i've got 90% without doing nothing special. Is my battery broken? shoud i use warranty?
You got some app going crazy or something. I get apps that hang sometimes and will kill my battery in a day. Lately ive been paying attention and trying to kill apps that are uselessly draining and ive only used a third of my battery in 24 hours. Just gotta hunt the problem down.
Regardless, its probably just software and not the phone itself.

I'm new here since I bought the device yesterday, but this looks like a general issue...
This thread explains battery saving, some issues that might be related to your case are:
- If you misuse Greenify or any other "battery saving" apps they can actually lead to battery drain
- @gafri1: If "When charging , you must power off until 100%" means that every time you charge you must do it until 100% then it's false. Lithium ion batteries DO NOT have "memory", so charging to 100% or 70% doesn't make any difference. There's this thread that contains a brief explanation and this entire website dedicated to batteries.
As far as your specific problem is concerned, what do your battery stats say?
Better Battery Stats and Wakelock Detector can be used to collect more complete battery stats. They DO NOT SAVE BATTERY, they just tell you what might be draining it. The first step should be to check the built in battery stats in the Settings and then turn to other more sophisticated tools.
Charging issues
OK, had a few instances of odd charging that may be what is happening.
One OEM cable got pinched at the head of the micro USB. Shorting and bad connection. Battery shows charging, but never increasing charge.
Ended up melting the head and heating up the tablet.
Long aftermarket charging cable or extension cord. Some do not have proper pin out... will not charge or show charge. End up having little charge after disconnecting from charger.
I watched, a tablet go from 100% to 90% within 2 minutes and slowly decrease the rate until it leveled at 60%. A false reading of charge state until battery data caught up with battery's true charge.
WiFi only, or connected to cell network? This is a very important detail, since if its on the cell network, the reception in your area can have a HUGE effect on battery drain. In fact, when talking about smartphones, I'd say cell reception is the primary factor behind battery life.
In any case, the battery drain you mention (30-40% drain with 1 hour screen on time) is not awful, although not great either. Especially depending on what you are doing during that screen on time (gaming can be a huge drain, streaming video too, but usually less so). I get maybe 5 hours screen on time if I'm watching Netflix. That with no battery saving, WiFi only Note 8.
Also, make sure Smart Stay is turned off, as it seemed to me to be a big battery drain (and never really worked all that well for me, anyway).

Agree with both these points. I've seen these "battery saver" types of apps (Juice Defender in particular) which have caused more issues than they solve. Some folks will swear by them. But don't take for granted they will increase your battery, and use them wisely. Don't "misuse" them as you say.
And charging while the phone is powered off is a myth that has been debunked long ago. Aside from the fact that the device will charge slightly faster (it won't be draining as its charging) this will have no effect on battery life.
Thx for information
exactly the same for me
I posted it here:

Sorry , Thx for the info , my note sometimes when charging until above 80% can go up until 100% in one minute what's about this problem anyone know ?
(Sorry bad English)
how many hours did you charge your note 8?
When i use new cable (custom cable ) the charge became faster , i only charge 2 hours 30 minutes
Become 100% , is it problem for my battery?

I have noticed some cables are faster than others. My bedroom charger will charge from dead in under 3 hours, the downstairs one will take 4 hours.
leave it on power saving mode always. It's the only way I get the battery to last on idle. in comparison the ipad air can sit days / weeks almost on idle.
Does battery lfie improve with CM? Can we put CM on 4.4 kitkat note 8?

The screen kill the battery..

Hi. I have note 2 n7100 with stock rom of BTU ver. 4.4.2.
In Last months the battery life down and I was try to buy a new one. Original. But it not help too much.. I tried to find what the problem and I think that is the screen. But why?
If I am doesn't using in the device or little use. Is is stay on 70% approx on night. Its good. But using in screen. Kill the battery after a 2.5 hours.. The surprise is that it's same if I'm using in browser or play in asphalt..
In past the device survive up to 6 screen hours. After the update to kitkat it's up to 5 hours. But now its very short time..
I tried to check with the built in and with external apps what using the power. The screen first at all.. Sometimes the asphalt 8 too if I am using him. . Doesn't found something else.
The brightness is very low. Approx 30%.. Sometimes less..
So what can be the problem?. Any reason can to be for the screen to loss power?
are you sure you've bought the original battery?
try to turn off wifi, data, gps, bluetooth for 1 night and see if the results are better
Yes. Its original..
If the screen off. And have basic use. The battery performance is good.. The problem is with screen time
Even I was thinking of buying an original battery from the service center. My battery charges to 100% very fast and discharges equally fast. I'm thinking the battery capacity has decreased dramatically. Screen on time is about 3 hours at minimum brightness. The screen has also has a yellowish tint (maybe burnt in a bit). After reading this I'm having second thoughts on whether to go for the replacement battery on simply buy a new device. My phone is almost 2and a half years old now.
Maybe it's time to change the device if it's faulty, but I would also check you are logged out of any apps and you could try using Battery Doctor and see how quickly the battery drains if you don't use the device after `optimizing' with Battery Doctor.
I am doesn't think that the battery is the problem..
If I am not using the screen. The battery performance is good..
And its not problem with this model. In past it was approx 4~6 screen hours..
Just update.. Its was the battery..
I replaced it in phonix battery and now its battery.
Approx 4 screen hours. 1 from the in games. Its fine..

whats your battery life like?

I got stock os with all the fancy stuff disabled.
My battery charges 1% per minute when between (0-85%) after that charging slows down.
It doesnt however fully charge it usually wont go higher than 97%.
Battery drains 1%/h in standby
5%\h listening to offline-music
Today I had 6h 5 min with 3:54 on-screen time ( starting from 93% down to 2%.
About the same for me but I can do a full charge in 45min coming from about 9%
About the same, recent CM builds are better. I'm considering the Nexus ROM
Sent from my Fire Phone using Tapatalk
At first i thought the battery life was ok, then i switched to the nexus rom for a while and came back to stuck because i wanted my camera back. There is a huge difference in battery life as far as I'm concerned. Stuck OS burns way more battery when idle but then again it has a lot more bloat :/ so it's to be expected
I get awesome battery life. On rooted stock with third party launcher with various tweaks. Way better than my desire or Moto g or Moto x or nexus 4 ever were.
Agreed, all other roms besides stock get awesome battery life. I've disabled or uninstalled as many apps as possible and the battery still drains unacceptably fast at idle. If we could get a stock rom modified to get the battery life of a custom rom that would make this phone perfect for me.

I consider the battery in mine to be working very well and use ~33.3% every two hours with the screen at full brightness and constant touching for reading. So looks like its about the same.
Standby is ~50% used in 48 hours with wifi on and background apps using the internet.
That's based on the apps I use and whatever they're doing in the background to wake the cpu, use wifi, etc.
Stock rom with the 'fancy stuff' disabled as well.

Standby drain

When you sleep, does your phone sleep, or does it stay up all night and crunch 1s and 0s? Rate this thread to express how you deem the speed at which the Samsung Galaxy S8+'s battery drains under standby conditions. A higher rating indicates that when the phone is not in use, the battery drains minimally.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!

Hello. I've recieved my mobile phone about week ago and there is one problem that annoys me. While the phone has lcd turned off, it drains a lot of energy. For example, yesterday I slept 7h and the battery decreased from 80 to 50%! I've tried almost everything, offline mode, aod off, battery saver mode etc. Any solutions?
Not that much
I think it's a lot ! I've seen many baterry usage screenshots and I was impressed. But mine is some kind of joke. I can't even use my mobile phone often at work because it's dead from 8 to 16, with all options turned off - aod, sync, gps etc. Also with baterry saving mode. Please guys, there must be a way to fix that.

Maybe try and disable bloatware using BK package disabler. It helped for me after disabling a few things
Unfortunately it did not work. I've tried everyrhing..
with only wifi and sync on, battery drains 3% from 11PM to 6AM
4G on
Wi-Fi on
Sync on
Over night From 12 to 8am is 2-3%
Not more.
there's a hundred settings for better battery life, putting apps to sleep, app background data, app data while data saving, notifications, permissions, etc etc etc....
Change network mode to 2G only. You will see standby consumption go from 1-1.5% per hr to .3-.5% per hour guaranteed. Obviously more drain if using always on display and/or other heavy features. Works perfect for me as my s8 is my secondary phone and don't need 4g.
ps. sot currently was like 6 mintues so didnt post screenshot of that, although im able to get around 5-7hrs sot with about 24hrs total use time. Also rom is renovate ice note 8 port ver .1 all stock settings otherwise. Also i got pretty much the same battery runtimes with stock or custom roms. Same usage with lte/3g/2g setting enabled got me nearly 5/6 hrs sot with around 16hrs total usage but really standby was affected by this setting change.

how much would it be with AOD on ?
Snapdragon S8+ rooted.
Not touching the phone, I lose about 10% per hour. A thirty minute drive to work, with Pandora the only app in use, it runs through somewhere between 15-20%. I've tried everything, including telling its mother and using the kitchen sink, but nothing helps. One day we weren't busy at work, and I forgot my charger at home. By 11am I was at 9% (that's after leaving the house at 7:30am) and had to make a run to Walmart for a charger. On a normal day, I have to charge it 2-3 times. On an extreme use day, I have a constant tether.
Not that much
I lose 3% or so over 8 hours of sleep. Make sure you go through your battery management and options to end draining apps when left in the background.
Stock US unlocked S8+
I'm going to leave my S8+ (unlocked) history so that others can relate and solve as i did:
Bought mine with a German ROM (DBT), and as soon i as connected it to Wi-Fi it got updated to QH3 (latest).
Notice immediately a "Android System" drain that would take over almost 50% of phone sleep time. After some days decided to a "Reset / Factory default" but same story, drain ...
Solution ? Flash different region software (PHN - Netherlands - G955FXXU1AQI7 )
Now it sleeps like a baby and "Android System" remains very low.
Imm experiencing huge battery drainage since the new firmware update......no clue why
Oh and my phone is warm in idle and becomes quite hot when doing low intensity tasks such as loading this site
It's too bad

If this true, I may give up to purchase one. I don't like to bring a power sink. And there is not always have a store that I can charge my device.

That's been my, my son's, and several other people's (in the root threads) experience. There are a whole slew of people that have great battery life with root, but mine is abhorrent. I actually went back to stock, and have been astounded how much longer the battery lasts compared to having it rooted.

Program Tasker to switch off all internet access, auto sync and wifi and Bluetooth. Once switched on, the phone will regain all functions. In a 12 hour shift, with occasional use, I lose about 20% of battery power.
I like Galaxy S8
This is best phone I every wanted. Galaxy S8 is best device in its own. No one can beat it.
