Unable to access recovery using pwr+vol down buttons - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I now have a functioning TWRP recovery image that I can access if I select reboot to recovery, but I can't get there using the pwr+vol down buttons. It just boots normally, though a few times it went into safe mode. The phone is an H815 that is unlocked and rooted and running Marshmallow 20b which is otherwise working fine. The power and volume down buttons function normally for their usual purposes.
Is there something I can flash that would restore the hardware boot to recovery function?
Thanks!

I'm having this issue too.. Completely unable to get into TWRP by using hardware buttons. Happened on two different US T-Mobile G4s both stock rooted.

[Q] Can't boot to recovery

I have a F400K G3 (Korean Olleh). It's rooted and bumped. I flashed the bumped TWRP image via Flashify and rebooted recovery via Flashify. It works. But when I try boot to recovery from a complete shutdown. It just boots into safe mode. I did exactly what was stated in the Bump thread (Power+V. Down, when logo appears, release then press again quickly) and also tried substituting V. Down button with V. Up, but it still wont boot to recovery. It just keeps going into safe mode. The video provided in the thread was using an AT&T model so maybe it differs from every variant. I want to know if I'm doing something wrong or the instructions are wrong.
Thank you.
You tried without releasing? Just keep holding buttons

Do you get to that factory reset screen?

I have tried it as well without releasing. Does the same thing. And it never shows the reset screen. It just goes directly to the boot animation. Rebooting from Flashify also doesn't show the reset screen but it does get to TWRP. But I need to boot it from complete shutdown because I'm gonna test a Flashable zip ROM without root so rebooting using Flashify would be impossible.
Bump.
Seriously. Anyone?
I am subscribing because I have the exact same problem. I have tried every key combination I could find for the G2 and G3 but no luck...
This is exactly the kind of problems you get when using stuff like Flashify. The holding of the buttons etc you mentioned should work. Are you sure you aren't connected using a micro usb?

No, I am not connected to USB. If I reflash the recovery using ADB will it work? But I do have some worries because I'm using KitKat bootloader on a Lollipop Stock-based ROM (here) and I think I may get some errors.
It's not very important right now because I have root now and can reboot to recovery using Flashify.
I think all korean models cant enter recovery via hardware keys, mine is F400L and have the same problem.
Untouched LG G3
I have a completely untouched LG G3 uk version only official software no root etc and mine won't go into hard reset mode. I have tried 3 or 4 times it always goes into safe mode

Turn off the phone completely. Press and hold Power and Volume Down. When the LG logo appears, release. After a split second, press volume down and volume up. White screen asking you to reset will appear. Press Yes two times using Volume buttons.

Any remedies? I justed from stock to cm12 LG g3 F400L..

i've Lg g3 F4ooL and using Resrruction remic 5.5.5
I stuck in a Bootloop and my device is also not booting into Recovery or safe Mode.
Lg flash Tool is also not Connecting to my device in Downloadmode.
I think There is NO solution At ALl
Has anyone solved this issue?
to get in recovery on F460s, worked on mine, Press Vol-up + Power, as the logo appears release the keys and press Vol-up + Vol-down, you will boot into recovery.
I have the same issue, cant go into recovery using hard buttons on F400K. Any one able to succeed in this?
Same issue on LG G3 F460S, no combination of power + volume buttons + releasing them and pressing again when LG logo appears works. The device go straight into booting system and gets stuck. Is there any other method - maybe short-circuit some pins on the motherboard, to boot into recovery or do a system reset? Please...
OK, turns out that the combination is different for Korean models of G3, as misbah711 wrote, volume UP + power, when logo appears, release and press both volume UP + volume DOWN. If that does not work, try again, but release only the POWER button and press immediately volume DOWN (while volume UP was held all the time). Also, I first tried it without the back cover, as I have to remove battery to turn it off, did not work. Then with the cover it did, not sure if it's an important detail or not.
However it's not the end of the story for me. An image with Korean text appears, and nothing. No combination of power and volume buttons pressing does anything. I'm attaching the image. Also tried a web service to do Korean OCR and then used Google Translate - does not make any sense. Could anyone advise how to proceed and do a factory reset on this device? It won't boot into the system (gets stuck), no adb or any other communication with it.
Edit:
Turns out that when the Korean text appears and I connect USB cable to my PC, adb works correctly. Typed:
adb reboot recovery
The phone rebooted into recovery and now I'm doing a factory reset on it. Looks like all will be fine.
i have d851 on stock kitkat. I flashed TWRP and Philz but no way i can get into recovery mode. it always goes to fastboot mode no matter how I reboot into recovery. Now i am looking for stock recovery image. or a way to fix the twrp/philz. ROM boots just fine.

Oh boy I need help

My wife's old S3 was given to me to use. I had originally flashed CM 11 on it and tried to upgrade to CM 12.1. In doing so I accidentally forgot to flash GAPPS.
I reverted to the stock ROM via Odin but now I'm stuck in a boot loop. The best part? The device's power button does not work and I cannot make any selections within the stock recovery to clear the cache and reset to factory settings.
Can anyone help me?
Pull the battery to turn off the phone and put it back in. If you feel the phone power up by vibrating upon putting the battery in and not touching the power button and go into loop then you have a bad power button. Do you have this problem? If so, then your only options are repair or remove the power button (there is an alternate way to power the phone up). Let us know if it is a bad power button or not so that hardware issues can be accounted for and go from there.
NOTE: The S3 has been known for some time now to have power buttons that fail. Mine did, and I opt to remove mine as I could not justify paying for a repair when the S3 is my backup phone and test platform and I have a method to power up. I use widgets for controlling power off, restarts, and recovery once powered up.
I no longer have a power button either and recently encountered this same issue after using Odin to flash a stock image.
My solution was to flash TWRP recovery using Odin, which allows one to perform operations using touch instead of the power button.

Bootloops have not been uncommon when reverting from LP to KK. Once you have flashed TWRP as others in the thread have suggested, you will probably need to wipe/ format the internal sdcard. The other remedy some have posted is to load a stock recovery and do a factory reset from within that stock recovery.
Not sure how to get into recovery without a power button.
Is the button loose or not functioning at all? You could try opening the phone and removing everything from the frame and see if the power button functions.
I haven't tried this with my SGS3, but on my Acer tablet I have booted into recovery using adb and fastboot. This requires connection to a computer, but not a power button. Unless you have a touch version of a custom recovery installed you still would not be able to select an item.
You may be able to flash a custom recovery using adb. I had broken my stock recovery on that tablet and used fastboot to reflash a working stock recovery.

Broken android when trying to enter recovery

Hi!
Today I unlocked bootloader and installed a custom rom and everything went fine.
Now, when I tried to flash the camera mod app, I couldn't enter TWRP. When trying to do it with the restart option it shows a broken android and I have to remove battery to get the phone running again. Manual (holidng down vol button + power button, as well as holding down buttons and releasing them for 1s) is also not working.
The phone works fine, but I would like to have TWRP working.
Can I just reinstall twrp like the first time?
Thank you

What device? H811? Needs to know more about what software you flashed.
If you can get into fastboot you can push twrp there.
Hmmm i flashed xperia phones locked bootloader twrp on my h818 and i got this error too so it means it changed the recovery but can't start it?

H815 EUR. I installed the 2.8.7.0 and the 2.8.6.1 from https://dl.twrp.me/h815/. I tried it multiple times with these 2 versions and everytime I get the same error.
Connecting it to pc and entering recovery works without a problem, though.
Edit: I flashed Genisys 3.7

So you can get into twrp with "adb reboot recovery"?
Your problem is you can not access it from neither the rebooter app nor the hardware buttons?
When using the harware buttons, hold vol down then press and hold power until the logo shows up. Release power for a second then press and hold again.

Correct, I can get in twrp with "adb reboot recovery"
I was releasing both the volume and power buttons. Tried it again, but I came to a menu where I could only choose whether to delete all data (factory reset) or not. When choosing NO, the phone proceeded to boot normally.

That menu is perfectly normal. You have to select okay. Because you have a custom recovery it will not factory reset your phone but rather boot you into twrp.

OMG Please help! Bootloop, can't get into recovery but able to get into download mode

I have a SM-G925T and it started boot loop today. I tried to get into recovery mode by holding Power+VOL UP+Home but that does nothing. When I tried to go into download mode by holding Power+VOL DOWN+Home, it works fine.
Symptom:
Phone boot loops displaying only the very first Samsung screen with Galaxy s6 edge (no samsung boot animation). Once this very first logo screen comes on, the screen goes black and loops again. Even if I plug the OEM Samsung USB charging cable, screen does not show the battery charging screen, just the same Samsung Galaxy s6 edge screen.
I have already tried the following:
1. Flash stock rom using ODIN, flashed successfully, still boot loop
2. Holding Power+Vol DOWN to reset, still boot loop
3. Flash stock rom using ODIN again, flashed successfully, still boot loop
4. Let battery drain, waited 3 hours for screen to boot loop and battery died, plugged back USB charging cable back, still boot loop
5. Flick the power button many times to loosen any dirt, still boot loop
6. Hold the power button for 1 minute, 2 minute, and 3 minute, still boot loop
Please help, any advice very appreciated!
Hm, I had this 2 month ago with a S4...

Hold the button combo pwr, vol down and home as if you want to go into download mode, but try to time it that immediately before the download mode screen comes on, use the Vol up, home and pwr combo and keep holding it down, till it goes into recovery. You have to time it so that right begore the download screen lites up you shift to the recovery mode 3 button combo and hold it till it goes into recovery. This works for me and how I do it all the time whether using stock recovery or TWRP.

Thanks for your suggestion Docmjldds but that didn't work either. I think I timed it within 0.5 second of the download mode screen. I always tried cancelling out of download mode and quickly holding the combo vol up, home, and pwr immediately after it and it that did not work either.

I have the solution for you my friend. Flash TWRP using oding (in download mode), then from TWRP install or flash this rom(for this you need to download the rom, connect your phone to the pc and while you have TWRP open in your screen put the file of the rom in the phone)
Rom right here:

This works because this rom comes with its own bootloader and kernel.

I can easily get into download mode but not recovery mode. I don't know of a way to power off, just reset by holding power button or (power button and vol down). I just realized how ridiculous this sounds but is there any way to actually power off the phone without loading android and holding power button, and selecting power off? As far as I know, there's only soft reset or hard reset.
I'm pretty sure my hardware buttons work fine since I need to hold power button, vol down, and home at the same time to enter download mode perfectly. Then I have to press volume up button to enter download mode. So all the buttons that's needed to enter recovery mode (power, volume down, and home) works.
Wonder if bad battery can be be the cause? I don't get any charging indicator (screen with battery animation) when I plug phone to USB charger. Seems to be able to hold a charge but not that long, no way for me to check battery percentage though.

I tried flashing all of the stock roms using ODIN and nothing would work but flashing that rom I linked you before worked and then I was able to go back to stock. Before doing all this, if you don't want to void your warranty.
1-Download the stock NOUGAT, flash it using odin and then if it lets you go in recovery mode, factory reset your phone then try to boot. Give it 5-10 minutes to make sure it doesn't actually boot. I know the first boot takes a while so you will be stuck at the t-mobile logo. If after 10 minutes doesn't go on then try number 2.
2-Having the phone in download mode use the software smart switch.
Follow the instructions in this video.

If none of that works, either use your warranty or

So I just flashed the latest nougat stock firmware with ODIN. Flashed passed/succeeded. No difference, still boot loop Still cannot get into recovery mode but can get into download mode fine like before.
My phone is out of warranty so I'm just gonna buy a replacement battery off ebay and see if that makes any difference. Hope someone has other ideas. I'll use TWRP as a last resort. Maybe that will work but I don't know how not being able to get into stock recovery would be fixed by installing TWRP custom recovery. I suspect I would not be able to get into TWRP recovery either.

Why are you so concerned about tripping knox, since you are out of warranty anyways. And BTW it's a myth that a rooted phone loses warranty. I have had plenty of my phones covered under warranty and they were ALL rooted. With TWRP installed, you can use the advanced wipe actions to basically factory reset and load either Nougat or MM stock. I am rooted using stock just released Android 7 for TMobile firmware. Odin Firmware. Odin TWRP. Then install anything you like. Yes...knox tripped. Yes, you will lose Samsung Pay. For me not a big deal. Otherwise just fine. The warranty comany has to prove that your act of rooting caused the issue the phone has. Samsung will tell people that phone warranty is voind if rooted. But it's ONLY a line they are told to state. Again, I have used Samsung warranty direct...NOT TMobile and obtained free warranty service and my phones were rooted.

The biggest concern about tripping knox for me is that I lose Samsung Pay. It's actually the most useful thing I have on the phone. I can do pretty much every thing on my old phones that I need but it doesn't have samsung pay. I understand it's useless for most people, but for me it's the most important feature.
Do you think i would still have the same problem getting into recovery even if I flashed TWRP? Right now I can't even load stock recovery.

I really have no idea why you are having this issue. The one time my phone was so screwed up was I could ONLY fix by doing a complete factory reset including internal memory and that was via TWRP. Installing TWRP WILL kill Knox, therefore no more Samsung Pay...period. Have you tried smart switch out of curiosity?

I think my problem is worst than what you had before because I cannot even get into recovery mode not just a normal boot loop. This issue is boot loop and not being able to get into recovery mode.
I have not used smart switch yet. I was going to do an emergency software recovery but that would basically just wipe all internal memory and flash the stock rom. I thought I could save some of my data by just flashing stock rom with ODIN, which flashed perfectly every time but still boot loops.

The only thing I can think of is that your setup is so corrupted you basically have no choice here. It's kind of the old adage about knowing it's important to occasionally back up the internal data, but just never get to it. I'm kind of paranoid to every now and then make sure I have copies of stuff around. I know it's zero solace for you, but without getting into recovery mode, there is no way to get to the Internal stuff that I know of. I'm assuming you never used smartswitch to backup or just use a computer to copy paste Internal stuff to a folder for saving.

Try this stock Recovery. I found a post I made almost two years ago with a link to this file. Use the password to open the file and try ODIN again

I realize I'm kinda grasping at straws here short of a complete nuke of your setup....but sometimes you have to bite the bullet so to speak

Really appreciate your help. I'm starting to think more that it's a bad battery now. Hope that's just it instead of the main board.
I left phone on charge for a few hours (constantly boot looping the whole time). I'm able to power off the phone by holding Power button and Volume down for 10 seconds. Screen is completely off, no boot looping.
Step1: When try to simply turn phone on by holding power button for three seconds, the first samsung galaxy s6 edge logo screen pops up but then goes away and phone looks to be off. Like it's trying to get power from the battery but can't.
Step2: If I keep holding the power button, that first logo screen would turn on and off as if it's a boot loop. If I let go, then phone is off again.
Step3: If I go into download mode and select Cancel (restart phone), it goes into boot loop with only first logo screen again. It loops until I hard reset by holding power button and volume down again for 10 seconds. Then phone is off. Same thing repeats if I go back to Step1 again.

Cannot enter Recovery on P605

I have a bootloop when trying to enter recovery mode. I can kind of fix this by constantly trying to enter the download mode (power+VolDown). After a while when hitting just the right time this works. When in downloadmode I can install TWRP via ODIN and after the installation my device boots normally again.
So I can make my device work again but still cannot update android. I am still on 5.1.1. (rooted). It does not matter if I try to enter recovery by pressing the hardware buttons or using the TWRP App. The result is always the same.
Are there any other ways to install a current Lineage OS without recovery mode? Maybe using ODIN or ADB? Or is there anything in addition I can try to do to make recovery work again?
I have some weird theory. If Magisk is installed, it can be located on the recovery instead of bootloader or kernel partition. Then the keys won't work, but after 20-30mins of booting or bootlooping of the system you will be taken to TWRP. That's what i experienced on my Galaxy S5 recently.
I'd never use the boot key combo as long as system is still working, custom roms have the option to reboot to recovery, with stock you need an app and root.
On the p605 you don't need to press Home, despite common opinion,so it's quite foolproof to keep the other buttons down and release power, when the screen lights up. If this don't work, then it's the other fault condition, i'm just not sure whether my assumption's right. And whether you can count on the watchdog timer or will have to finally use Fastboot and a pc connection(i did not in years).
