Has anyone tried a workaround for obtaining wifi hotspot without root? I know there is a way on the sprint variant by obtaining the msl, is it possible this could work on at&t variant. I am thinking of switching to at&t for there new unlimited plan and really want a note 5 but without root I may go with the LGG4.(which is rootable)

WiFi Hotspot is included in most of share AT&T plans. You don't need root for this. BTW unlimited plan will get throttled at the 22GB limit.

The new unlimited plan is only offered to Directv or Uverse customers and it does not include hotspot. And yes they will throttle after 22GB but only during high congestion. Sprint has also implemented this(at 23gb). Verizon will soon offer an unlimited again and throttle(at 22gb) during high congestion as well. Legally on unlimited plans they can only throttle if the bandwidth consumption adversely affects there network, ie: during high congestion. A ceo from at&t said they would only throttle if it was absolutely necessary, so you are not going to just get bumped to 2g-3g speeds as soon as you hit that threshold.
So back to the original question.

It's specifically said hotspot can't be used/added with this new unlimited plan. Can it be bypassed with root?

From what I've read in the 6p forum. The phone would have to be root and edit the build.edit to work.

Call T-Mobile and add tethering to your account and stop being cheap
Sept 5th they are adding true unlimited data for 20.00 a month and dropping the tethering fee to 10.00 so for 30.00 a month you can have true (no caps and no slow downs) unlimited data WITH tethering. With that kind of price I see no logical reason to try and skirt around paying for tethering.

not because I'm cheap trust me on that one , and I thought the unlimited was 30 not 20 and tether was going to be added to the 30 more ??

I personally can see one very good reason. I like having the option if needed, but have only ever found a need for it maybe 3 or 4 times in over a year.
Sorry, but im not gonna pay $120 a year for something I hardly ever use. Besides, we already pay for the data why should we have to pay more because of how we use it.
(I can understand a small fee for the true unlimited plan coming out, but for any other plans I think its just another way these companies like to squeeze customers for money).
@OP
Try the app called simply, WiFi Tether. Should be on market and theres a thread for it somewhere on here. Always worked pretty good for me.

So it looks like T-Mobile is blocking wi-fi tether now. It was working perfect ever since I bought my S3, but today I turn on wifi tether and all is working then I get two text messages from T-mobile (see attached image). AS soon as I received the second message my tether stopped working. I am rooted running XquizIt v70 Rom, KT747 9-5 Kernel WiFi tether 3.2 beta 2. My computer I was tethering to is a MacBook Pro running Lion using google chrome browser.
This is just a heads up to you guys and if anyone knows a workaround let me know.
How did they block it if you're rooted? Weird.
I know, it sucks. I'm curious to see if others are running into the same thing. I rarely use Wi-Fi tether but I like to have it just in case. Sometimes when I'm at starbucks their wifi is so slow.
Did you upgrade to the "Truly" Unlimited 4G Plan?
Do u have the new unlimited plan? If so, you can't tether hitspot wifi anymore with that plan.

Try a different app like Barnacle wifi tether or FoxFi. I've heard of success stories (lol) using Foxfi on Stock Rooted OTA LH2.
Yes, I'm on the new truly unlimited plan, but it has been working flawlessly for the past week, up until today. I will try some other apps and see if they work.
I thought they couldn't detect if you were using the app if you were rooted using wifi tether for root? I was about to get the truly unlimited plan and use it to tether to my nexus and laptop.

Yes I know what rooted means. However he could have updated and lost his root? Anything is a possibility. You don't need to come in here trolling like an asshole. Go play in traffic on your nearest freeway.
Well, I downloaded firefox and everythinng is working on firefox. Interesting. I had even changed the user agent on chrome to android and it still didn't work on Chrome. Well I guess I will have to add firefox back into my mix of browsers.
Have you tried Chrome Canary? It's basically a cutting edge, development version of Chrome. Sounds like T-Mobile is blocking user agent string (which have nothing to do with wifi tether app).

Browser detection on their end. If you're going to tether it's best to do it through a VPN, that way they cannot even look at your traffic.
The new contract for unlimited data states that you can not share your network in any way including wifi hotspot and tethering, that's why I didn't change my account. Its also Mobile data and not true data and before anyone asks there is a difference and certain non mobile web access wont work. Its messed up and deceiving when your use too true web data access.
They offered me a separate package for tethering with a 6 month trial period (3 months with 20$ off my account and full price after the first 3) and I never use it but if your one of those people that need it I would ask about it.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Okay so when I signed up my contract I was on a plan with unlimited Data. I'm never using more then 2 GB, I use the tethering so rarely and yesterday I turned it on because I needed to check something on one website and I got to T-Mobile Page saying that I have to update (wtf?) I already paid for my data, who are they to decide how and where I can use my data? They don't know what the heck they're doing.
I never had any issues like this before, I was tethering just fine and now they suddenly decided that I need to update my plan? Well hell no I'm not going to do it.
So let's pick this thing apart and figure out how to tether without going to their stupid - UPDATE ME page. Mofos what a lame thing they did, I'm so disappointed from T-Mobile right now. (Yea let's do it let's make a couple extra cashhhhhh, it wouldn't hurt rightt??)
I've read that it would work if I delete Tethering Manager or Tethering Provisions with Titanium Backup, I'm on official Stock ICS rooted / I deleted Tethering Provisions only because I don't have Tethering manager in my apps and still nothing - I'm still gething redirected.
I just want to mention that when I deleted Tethering provisions (I restarted the phone, the tethering worked for like 5 minutes and then stopped working again).
So anyone have any ideas how to stop them from screwing around with their clients?

This is the easiest way to make sure it works 100%... You can have tethering working with chrome browser, and most other tablets or phones. Tmobile can't tell the difference. Anything else is hit or miss...
Instead of using the stock tethering option download a separate application for tethering. Although some of them are still blocked I have heard that using the clock work mod tethering app will work. I guess mainly because it uses an app on your phone and a client app on the computer.
But there are several apps out that will get around t Mobile blocking tethering. Just looking up and trying out..
Also if you use AOKP . the built in tethering works fine it might also be the same in cM 10 or even 9. I know this because I use the brand new fully unlimited 4 G Plan and I need full to tether just fine to my laptop without any extra applications.

I use chrome all the time and I get the tmo website. the reason you see the page now is because old tmobile sim cards takes a while for them to realize that you are tethering. as the new sim doesnt. tmobile probably already figured you were tethering.
you can also flash a custom rom and then you can tether that way

Does Wi-Fi calling use rate plan minutes? It says here http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1680 that it does (I believe), but in which situations would it NOT use rate plan minutes? Is there a way to modify my note 2 to not use rate plan minutes when on wi-fi calling?

If you are in a contract monthly plan the Wi-Fi calling is free and does not use your rate plan minutes. You have to activate the feature first, by calling tmobile or through your account online. Your Wi-Fi calls will show up as using a different pool rather than your 500 or whatever amount minutes.
This does not work on prepaid.

So your gps can pick up satellites indoors? According to their website it uses plan minutes. I've learned not to really on anything customer service says, they are pretty clueless. Technical support read from a script and just repeat back every word you say and just say I am sorry. I usually have better luck troubleshooting without them. They tried to get me to make an insurance claim because I had dust accumulating under the screen and a warranty. They sent me a refurb with a chewed up SIM card slot.
Maybe I am wrong but I have been told over a dozen times in the past year by them that it uses plan minutes.

As an employee of T-Mobile I just wanted to set the record straight and let everybody know that wifi calling does indeed use rate plan minutes. The reasoning is that even though the voice call is being routed over the internet it still has to eventually go through T-mobiles towers and network before it reaches the final destination (receiving party) regardless of the carrier. This is a common question that we get from customers regarding billing inquiries. WiFi calling is a free feature, in the fact that we do not charge extra for this service. Like other carriers in additional hardware. However, WiFi Calling is subjected to the same terms of service as utilizing a tower.
(Ex-500 anytime minute plan pricing with unlimited tmobile to tmobile & nights and weekends at no extra charge.)
The only way to protect yourself from overages besides monitoring those minutes is to get the unlimited anytime minute plan or the new unlimited any mobile feature, to ensure no overage surprises. Know its wordy but I Hope it helps.
