[Q] Wi-Fi calling and rate plan - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

This might already be common knowledge but I didnt see an answer when I searched this forum but..
Does Wi-Fi calling use rate plan minutes? It says here http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-1680 that it does (I believe), but in which situations would it NOT use rate plan minutes? Is there a way to modify my note 2 to not use rate plan minutes when on wi-fi calling?
On this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1655086&page=4 they say it does NOT use rate plan minutes so I'm a little confused.
Thanks in advance!

It does use rate plan minutes.

If you are in a contract monthly plan the Wi-Fi calling is free and does not use your rate plan minutes. You have to activate the feature first, by calling tmobile or through your account online. Your Wi-Fi calls will show up as using a different pool rather than your 500 or whatever amount minutes.
This does not work on prepaid.

I guess it did. I have been with t mobile since last August and when I used it on my Sensation it popped up on the screen that it used plan minutes every time I used it. Also T Mo cs and store manager said it uses plan minutes.

So your gps can pick up satellites indoors? According to their website it uses plan minutes. I've learned not to really on anything customer service says, they are pretty clueless. Technical support read from a script and just repeat back every word you say and just say I am sorry. I usually have better luck troubleshooting without them. They tried to get me to make an insurance claim because I had dust accumulating under the screen and a warranty. They sent me a refurb with a chewed up SIM card slot.
Maybe I am wrong but I have been told over a dozen times in the past year by them that it uses plan minutes.

As an employee of T-Mobile I just wanted to set the record straight and let everybody know that wifi calling does indeed use rate plan minutes. The reasoning is that even though the voice call is being routed over the internet it still has to eventually go through T-mobiles towers and network before it reaches the final destination (receiving party) regardless of the carrier. This is a common question that we get from customers regarding billing inquiries. WiFi calling is a free feature, in the fact that we do not charge extra for this service. Like other carriers in additional hardware. However, WiFi Calling is subjected to the same terms of service as utilizing a tower.
(Ex-500 anytime minute plan pricing with unlimited tmobile to tmobile & nights and weekends at no extra charge.)
The only way to protect yourself from overages besides monitoring those minutes is to get the unlimited anytime minute plan or the new unlimited any mobile feature, to ensure no overage surprises. Know its wordy but I Hope it helps.

Don't they charge a $250 migration fee or something absurd, every time you change your plan?

It appears it will be free if you already have the unlimited (5GBP)(like me). It says upgrade to unlimited from 2gb for $10. Thats $30

Probably in preparation for the I phone 5 launch.
I have a question though. Let's say we got the truely unlimited plan can we still use the tethering option in cm10 without getting caught?
Hopefully they just add $5 more to the 30/monthly 4G plan.

I just hope tmobile's network will be able to take the hit from all of us data hogs + the new ones who will be making the switch. That's the only thing that worries me because it would suck to be on an unlimited data plan that only crawls along web pages and streaming.

I was a little bummed that I left sprint after 9 years and was missing my sprint unlimited everything and have been keeping a good eye on my usage now with TMO so I dont go over. Now I'm really glad I switched over. Currently on the value $64.99 (500 min, unltd texts, and 5gb data) plan and from the looks of it I'll be paying $5 more to get the unlimited everything. Cant wait for the 5th! The plus side of Tmo is I get 4g speeds in 99% places I go and didnt have to wait for LTE to roll out for sprint.

Customer retention can offer you unlimited 5GB data for $20 (this does not have the tethering option) and it can be added now, no need to wait till the 5th. They only have the 5GB plan, i already asked about the 2GB for $10 and they said they don't have that offer. I didn't take this option even though it is $10 cheaper (I currently have the grandfathered unlimited data & text for $35) cause I always find myself tethering my laptop or tablet during travel when the hotel wireless is spotty.
I just got the 5 gig from retention but the rep states that I still will only have a five gig cap is this true? or does he know what he's talking about? I'm thinking he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. But got that plan from retention for 20 bucks a month

Tmobile is lying to customers about tether

Hello. I am a bit miffed at tblowhole. I called trying to add the 14.99 tether plan to my account that has "truly unlimited 4g".
I was told it was impossible to add for it would not work. Now any good xda junky knows that this is untrue. I can tether through work around that prove them to be lying, now what has me miffed is even if we want to pay for it we can't.
Now I am wondering if we whom are on this whack ass carrier can do something about them discriminating and lying flat out to those of us on the plan. They will sell the package to everyone else but us.
I feel this is a deceptive practice and would love to get as many users as possible to write and email to the bbb and fcc for the unfair business practices.
I am fully aware of tsucktoes jargon and schpeal and know it to be flat bs. They are lying to us and refuse to offer the same services to us that they offer tiered customers.
Subscribers unite and let's figure out how to but their balls to the flame and let those of us willing to pay for it on this plan get it. I would rather be legit and not have to try an circumvent this bs through other means.
What say you?

It's not that the "can't" do it, it's that they "won't". If they were to offer that option to the truly unlimited plan I'm sure they would increase the cost of that plan quite a bit. I don't see how this decision could be called "deceptive" since the plan description does say "Smartphone Mobile HotSpot service not compatible with Unlimited Nationwide 4G Data."
The reason they have tethering plans with caps as well as the unlimited plan is because they don't allow tethering on the unlimited plan. If you want to tether get a capped plan.

You weren't lied to. T-Mobile reps can't add mobile hotspot along with Unlimited 4g. It wouldn't work when they process it in the system. Complaining about this when you post on a developers forum which has posted plenty of work arounds seem childish. Be grateful that T-Mobile even offers unlimited 4G and didn't follow AT&T and Verizon in capping data.
Root your phone and download wifi tether. Problem solved in less than an hour.

Well, you tether with the option which you're not supposed to.
You can do it for "quickie", but you're warned. You may be moved out the "unlimited" option and moved to 5GB or 10GB and you're flagged.
I wouldn't risk it because I need it (remote desktop uses a lot of data), and I have webconnect plan so I just use it when I need it.

How is that discrimination? If they were to allow tethering on the unlimited plan then many people would turn off their home internet service and just use their phone's mobile hotspot feature. This would drastically increase the data usage on T-Mobile's network and slow down service for everyone. That's why the unlimited plan cannot be used with the mobile hotspot service.
On an unlimited plan it makes sense for them NOT to allow tethering. Think what would happen to the bandwidth if everyone started tethering with unlimited data. Business sense is all that is, and I prefer they keep it that what so my data plan doesn't go up in price. That would happen for sure if that were to happen. Sorry but that's just now it is.

When do they begin to throttle your data speeds? AT&T is 5GB (thank god today started a new billing cycle)..
I read on Slashdot that att doesn't track port 53 (dns) traffic.. To cheat you could in theory just get a tiered plan and do all Web traffic through a port 53 proxy....

I roamed 97.4 GB last month

Recently I have been getting an extremely unreliable 4g connection and my 3g connection isn't much better. I called Sprint several times but they offered me no resolution except to "feel free to roam until we fix the towers in your area". So I turned off 4g and set my phone to automatically allow roaming. This month I had to download nearly 80 GB of images off of a cloud service because my subscription was about to expire. Right now my only internet connection is through my phone, so I tethered it to my PC in order to download the files.
It turns out I was roaming the entire time and I have roamed around 97.4 GB in my most recent billing cycle. Do you think they are going to terminate my contract? Or do you think I will get off with a warning?

Good luck to you!
I say this because extreme roaming data usage will grab attention and they will sort through IP's, just letting you know that as it just happened to my cousin. He hit 78G in data roaming and they found out he was using his phone for PC gaming while on vacation. And yep he is paying for it right now.
How is that even possible? I've been told if over half of your usage is roaming you will be disconnected. Even though Sprint claims roaming is unlimited.

it's in terms and conditions of the contact. They hold the right for excessive roaming.
And if they determine that you're tethering without paying, they'll claim fraud.
Not that I care, just the lil lady works for sprint and sees it frequently.

They told you to roam, throw it in their face haha

They might have told you it was okay to roam but if you don't pay for tethering you could be charged for excessive data usage and tethering.

Tethering? yes
posting this here VIA the tether? yes
Good luck to you!
I say this because extreme roaming data usage will grab attention and they will sort through IP's, just letting you know that as it just happened to my cousin. He hit 78G in data roaming and they found out he was using his phone for PC gaming while on vacation. And yep he is paying for it right now.

I thought they weren't allowed to annoy you about using tethering apps without paying for it?
Wasn't there a court case on this a while ago?
that case was for blocking apps. doesn't mean you don't still have to adhere to TOS and pay for tethering.

Wait, the worst that can happen is they terminate my contract right? What is this talk of having to pay for it?
They could charge you for tethering plus all the data you used.

Doubt it. The Sprint website says you have unlimited roaming 3g so the amount roaming should be irrelevant. Don't admit to tethering.

You don't get what I am saying... If you do not pay for tethering, and your use this much data, they could charge you for the data used.
I don't see how you think it is okay to use that amount of data tethering to another device when you do not pay for tethering on your account.

Oh no they'll cancel you contract when you don't pay that big bill. But yes you will have to pay for services rendered which is tethering and data used beyond the 5gigs given for tethering.
But like I said earlier carriers are not stupid and they will come after you and they know places lime this and could link your statement here as proof bit they really won't need that once they drop the IP bomb that will tell them what devices where used via your phone. Trust me they can tell but no system.is bullet proof so they cannot block it as some apps pull info via desktop browsers calls and a blanket block would kill those. So they just tag all the over the top users, especially when roaming is envolved.

Sprint WiFi hotspot

So just wanna make sure that if I have a rooted and unlocked optimus g running a custom ROM, I won't be charged anything extra for using WiFi hotspot right? Thanks for any info guys

Not unless you go past your limit. It mostly happens with AT&T and Sprint carriers, where if they somehow detect that you are using a hotspot (bit unlikely with a custom rom, but it can happen), then they will charge you.

Yeah I just let a buddy connect to it with his phone so he could use the browser and stuff. I use a lot of data as it is so they prob won't notice anything

I have unlimited, but they don't let me use a hotspot... so I use TrevE's Wireless Tether. They don't notice at all. (I have Sprint)

In one of the posts I seen before it said that AT&T and Sprint are the most common too notice someone using an excessive amount of data for unpaid tethering. How much is considered to be a lot. on average I use 120 to 180 gb a month. Have I just been lucky? I'm running rooted stock rom.
you guys just watch out cause here soon sprint is going to be shutting down what they call "server farms" running on thier new network. Not sure what all qualifies you for that class but just make sure you dont abuse it too much.

I would say you are very lucky. My step son was downloading about the same amount. And although they didn't mention tethering. They sent me a letter saying I had excessive data usage, (I have unlimited data plan) and had 10 days to stop the excessive usage on that line or they were going to cancel my account. This was on Sprint.

Well here the past month or so I've taken it easy. My schedule at worked changed so I didn't have the time for things I did. I guess I got lucky. I know that I read using a stock ROM is the easiest way to get caught. Since then I've installed the pacman ROM for my lgog. So I'm not so worried about that now.
