I roamed 97.4 GB last month - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Recently I have been getting an extremely unreliable 4g connection and my 3g connection isn't much better. I called Sprint several times but they offered me no resolution except to "feel free to roam until we fix the towers in your area". So I turned off 4g and set my phone to automatically allow roaming. This month I had to download nearly 80 GB of images off of a cloud service because my subscription was about to expire. Right now my only internet connection is through my phone, so I tethered it to my PC in order to download the files.
It turns out I was roaming the entire time and I have roamed around 97.4 GB in my most recent billing cycle. Do you think they are going to terminate my contract? Or do you think I will get off with a warning?

I was actually getting unusually fast 3g speeds. I think I was roaming on Verizon's network and there is a tower very close to me.

If you were in Europe your carrier would charge you a mere $237,000 dollars for that!

I say this because extreme roaming data usage will grab attention and they will sort through IP's, just letting you know that as it just happened to my cousin. He hit 78G in data roaming and they found out he was using his phone for PC gaming while on vacation. And yep he is paying for it right now.

How is that even possible? I've been told if over half of your usage is roaming you will be disconnected. Even though Sprint claims roaming is unlimited.

it's in terms and conditions of the contact. They hold the right for excessive roaming.
And if they determine that you're tethering without paying, they'll claim fraud.
Not that I care, just the lil lady works for sprint and sees it frequently.

I thought they weren't allowed to annoy you about using tethering apps without paying for it?
Wasn't there a court case on this a while ago?

that case was for blocking apps. doesn't mean you don't still have to adhere to TOS and pay for tethering.

Doubt it. The Sprint website says you have unlimited roaming 3g so the amount roaming should be irrelevant. Don't admit to tethering.

You don't get what I am saying... If you do not pay for tethering, and your use this much data, they could charge you for the data used.
I don't see how you think it is okay to use that amount of data tethering to another device when you do not pay for tethering on your account.

Oh no they'll cancel you contract when you don't pay that big bill. But yes you will have to pay for services rendered which is tethering and data used beyond the 5gigs given for tethering.
But like I said earlier carriers are not stupid and they will come after you and they know places lime this and could link your statement here as proof bit they really won't need that once they drop the IP bomb that will tell them what devices where used via your phone. Trust me they can tell but no system.is bullet proof so they cannot block it as some apps pull info via desktop browsers calls and a blanket block would kill those. So they just tag all the over the top users, especially when roaming is envolved.

Sprint hotspot to be capped!!

http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/21/sprint-reportedly-capping-its-mobile-hotspot-plans-october-2nd/ Looks like tether will now have a 5gb cap!
I had a feeling this was going to happen.... With all the changes going on and all
Sent from my EPIC WIN using XDA App
Actually, I don't understand why they didn't cap it when they first introduced the tethering plans.
Their USB network devices all have data caps. How is tethering from a phone rather than from a USB stick any different?
So if we are using it on a rooted phone with the hacked hotspot and unlimited data plan, they can't cap that. Only for people paying the 29.99.

I purposefully just purchased the phone because I just knew this was going to happen. I think that it should be grandfathered for those of us who actually pay for and use the Hot Spot. I am loving the phone but not the recently implemented changes. Soooo, do I keep the SG2E4GT or take it back and use my MiFi from Millenicom that I am using that is $69.99 per month for 10GB on 4G or 3G when 4G isn't available-total of 20GB per month? (That is, when they decide to turn the Verizon LTE tower on. It's been 4 months!).

A question about Roms that have the "Hotspot Hack"

I don't know much about hotspot plans and I just got on Sprint about 5 months ago. I always thought if you had the hotspot added onto your plan that it was capped data?
So my question is how do Rom's have unlimited data when they have the "hotspot hack" on it? Does Sprint not care about the cap? Or is the Hotspot plan not even capped for those who pay for it?
You get 5GB data with sprint hot spot plan
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Well when you use the hot spot app it does a sign in process and I guess that's how Sprint tracks down how you're using the phones data. With the hot spot hack they removed that sign in process which let's us connect without any errors saying you don't have the service..

Thank you for clearing that up. Now I understand. I know there is no cap but I'm paranoid. Is there a certain GB I should stay under so I don't get on Sprint's radar or do they not care? Last month I used over 7GB of just 4G through tethering. My 3G usage wasn't bad.

Don't worry about usage. I'm pretty sure the hotspot hack just cuts Sprint out of the equation and doesn't ask them for verification when you start the app
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I'm not sure but I think the sprint hot spot is infrastructure mode, like a router, and wireless tether is ad hoc, like internet connection sharing on say a laptop.
Some wireless devices see ad hoc but not all. Some devices can be modified to see ad hoc. For example, my galaxy tab and the Motorola Xoom can't see it out of the box new. I had to replace the wpa_supplicant file on the tab with one that was modded for ad hoc networks.
On the other hand, infrastructure mode, everything wireless can see that. That's why infrastructure mode is preferred.

4G is WiMax, which is a completely separate radio. What you're asking is like saying, "Is there a way to enable Bluetooth roaming". Clearwire is the only WiMax provider anyways, so even if there was a way, there's no where else to run to.
there isnt anything else to roam off of....
short answer, not doable in any way shape form or fashion

Correction:
For data there's no set limit but around what you stated is a reasonable assumption. The 300 MB limit is for laptop cards and data-only plans. As for minutes, if more than half are used roaming, for 3 months in a row, you get a warning letter. Then you get the boot. I'm a former sprint employee who also received the warning letter lol

I was a little bummed that I left sprint after 9 years and was missing my sprint unlimited everything and have been keeping a good eye on my usage now with TMO so I dont go over. Now I'm really glad I switched over. Currently on the value $64.99 (500 min, unltd texts, and 5gb data) plan and from the looks of it I'll be paying $5 more to get the unlimited everything. Cant wait for the 5th! The plus side of Tmo is I get 4g speeds in 99% places I go and didnt have to wait for LTE to roll out for sprint.

Customer retention can offer you unlimited 5GB data for $20 (this does not have the tethering option) and it can be added now, no need to wait till the 5th. They only have the 5GB plan, i already asked about the 2GB for $10 and they said they don't have that offer. I didn't take this option even though it is $10 cheaper (I currently have the grandfathered unlimited data & text for $35) cause I always find myself tethering my laptop or tablet during travel when the hotel wireless is spotty.
I just got the 5 gig from retention but the rep states that I still will only have a five gig cap is this true? or does he know what he's talking about? I'm thinking he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about. But got that plan from retention for 20 bucks a month

If you received the preferred android data plan then yes it will have the soft cap of 5 GB a month then slows down to 2G speeds.

So, has anyone seen the new prepaid plan?

Not sure if this should be in general, as it is a question. xD
But a month after purchasing my galaxy s 3 and signing a 2 year contract for the unlimited plan, t-mobile decides to make the 30 dollar 5G data unlimited text 100 minute plan to UNLIMITED data. And for me to switch it would cost approx 600 dollars -.-
Has anyone else seen this?

the $30 plan is not true(when are they ever) unlimited it caps you at 5GB 3g/4g and throttles you to EDGE once you get to 5GB. i've had this plan since the day it was introduced sometime fall of last year. its an ok plan if you dont rely on it as your only internet source or dont need minutes. i use skype and have wifi at home so it works for me. but i do reach the cap more often than not.
