I don't know much about hotspot plans and I just got on Sprint about 5 months ago. I always thought if you had the hotspot added onto your plan that it was capped data?
So my question is how do Rom's have unlimited data when they have the "hotspot hack" on it? Does Sprint not care about the cap? Or is the Hotspot plan not even capped for those who pay for it?
You get 5GB data with sprint hot spot plan

Well when you use the hot spot app it does a sign in process and I guess that's how Sprint tracks down how you're using the phones data. With the hot spot hack they removed that sign in process which let's us connect without any errors saying you don't have the service..

Thank you for clearing that up. Now I understand. I know there is no cap but I'm paranoid. Is there a certain GB I should stay under so I don't get on Sprint's radar or do they not care? Last month I used over 7GB of just 4G through tethering. My 3G usage wasn't bad.

Don't worry about usage. I'm pretty sure the hotspot hack just cuts Sprint out of the equation and doesn't ask them for verification when you start the app

I'm not sure but I think the sprint hot spot is infrastructure mode, like a router, and wireless tether is ad hoc, like internet connection sharing on say a laptop.
Some wireless devices see ad hoc but not all. Some devices can be modified to see ad hoc. For example, my galaxy tab and the Motorola Xoom can't see it out of the box new. I had to replace the wpa_supplicant file on the tab with one that was modded for ad hoc networks.
On the other hand, infrastructure mode, everything wireless can see that. That's why infrastructure mode is preferred.

The cap affects hot spots.
It doesn't it doesn't have anything to do with rooted tethering as that just shares the internet on the phone, which is unlimited.
Would wireless tethering be the same as a hotspot?
I get what he is saying. Android has tethering built in at a OS level. Its always there but Sprint blocks it and adds their own stuff which is monitored. Since root tether makes use of the phones data Sprint can't limit Hotspot since you aren't using it.
It works just fine.

Yeah it should be blocked if you're unrooted. It should redirect you to a page asking if you want to add it to your plan (at least that's what it did for me), etc... I actually still had issues tethering when I went to a custom tw rom but when I finally switched over to a cm10 nightly I no longer had issues tethering.

has been working for me for days since I signed up for unlimited 4g data plan.
I always just used PDAnet. We had a storm come through the other day and knocked out my home internet for a couple days. I had PDAnet (that I downloaded from the PLAY store) and used it to watch Netflix. Worked like a charm. Root isn't even required.
So the consensus here is that even with the (no tether unlimited 4g) plan tethering still works just fine? Or someone said that you must use firefox on the tethered pc and another said that pda.net app must be used? I'm looking to save some money by switching from my 10gig data plan but need to know that it will still tether first.

No one said you have to use anything. If you are rooted, tethering will work fine. You can't use the built-in tethering if you are not running a custom rom.
I too am considering the plan. Very interested to know the actual charges are at the end of billing cycle. Contracts usually have additional fees every month. That being said the cost of the plan sound really good. I am averaging about 10mb download with highs of 16mb with my no contract tmobile plan. It sucks on beachside but was kind of expecting that, can go from 100kb to 8mb down within a block or two. Might just be interference.
I would also like to know if calling mart credits can be added to the account or other providers credits work. Then I would actually be paying less than the price they are asking. About 5 percent less when i can find the codes that are still valid!
Please keep us posted everyone! Let us know if thier are any problems after tethering and how much are you tethering percentage wise daily. I want to cut out the cable and would just go to tethering for home if i can.
Also thinking that after sept 12th,tmobile may try to lure others into thier plans with free phones on that value plan, hope so,then can sell that phone(one s?) and get that Gnexus i been wanting to try .

I honestly believe this is normal behavior. Looks like Sprint had Samsung put a threshold to throttle tethering speeds. I believe that's what caused the whole slow 4g fiasco on previous ICS builds. They didn't properly bake it in. On Gingerbread I would pull 10+ mb while tethering. Now on ICS I barely break 1 Wether it's wifi tether or the the Sprint hotspot. Also after updating my Evo3D to ICS the tethering speeds dropped down too the same as my E4GT. And I actually pay for it on that phone..

That only works for 3g and being that he said his phone is pulling 10mb he's obviously using his 4g connection. Honestly I've done that tweak in the past and my 3g speeds were still crappy. Even worst it broke streaming on certain apps till I reverted back to the Sprint proxy.

from my experience some ICS kernels/modems can affect 3g/4g speeds
Did you try the WiMax tweaks mentioned in the General forum?
I've tried tethering on all the stock (rooted) ROMs and never get much speed when I turn on 4G. I don't think I've ever gotten over 1Mbps. I've tried the hotspot hack and others. 3G is acceptable for most of my (very limited) tethering needs, so I haven't asked for much help.
For my purposes, 4G on a smartphone is a bit silly since reading forums and RSS feeds doesn't take up much bandwidth. But I would like to tether now and again at higher speeds to download larger files and stream video.

Thanks for directing me to that thread. Unfortunately, I'm unable to get my MSL. I installed a terminal emulator and get nothing when I enter getprop ril.MSL. When I put in getprop by itself and scroll through the list, there is no ril.MSL. I've also tried dialing *#RIL#, running an IPC Dump Log, but the View IPC Dump is blank.
I am rooted, btw, on stock FI25 with Agat's recovery.
What am I doing wrong?
EDIT: Okay, first of all, I was able to make the entry changes using shortcut > Activities Nova Launcher > WimaxHiddenMenu > Extensions. Second, I was able to get my MSL by downloading alogcat, going to dialer and entering ##DATA# > Edit > entering random numbers, then filtering alogcat for MSL. Whew! Anyway, still trying to follow all the instructions in that thread.

Thanks. Should i try water cooling? I don't use it enough to worry, but like piddling with it to get the best performance. If something changes, I'll post about it.
Funny my post got ignored when I tried to give the best feedback based on experience. If you want fast 4g tethering speeds go back to a gingerbread build and you'll be all set. On ICS the kernels are set up to not allow you to go past 1mb while tethering. I guess that was sprints way of cracking down on the free tethering. You get to enjoy it still but at reduced speeds. My Evo3D is also on the same boat after ICS even with a subscription to Sprint hotspot $29.99.. Both phones had great tethering speeds on gingerbread. On that note good luck because you're never going to go above 1mb unless you count the upload speeds.

I don't know what "speed" problems you all are getting. I've been using the Wifi Tether app for quite some time. Most of the time, ROMs don't let you tether 4G using Sprint Hot Spot hack. The hack would only support 3G. So I just use Wifi Tether anyways. I always get good speeds. What's going on?
And I stream Netflix HD on ICS. So I know I'm getting fast speeds. LoL!!

We're talking about using the phone as a hotspot whether it is with the wifi tether app or the hacked hotspot. Apparently after upgrading to ICS from GB I'm getting throttled data speeds when I use my phone as a hotspot. My phone would pull 10 mbps, but when my computer connects to it is throttled to 2mbps max whether I'm using wifi tether app or the hacked hotspot. What's your setup and what speeds are you getting while tethering?
Recently I have been getting an extremely unreliable 4g connection and my 3g connection isn't much better. I called Sprint several times but they offered me no resolution except to "feel free to roam until we fix the towers in your area". So I turned off 4g and set my phone to automatically allow roaming. This month I had to download nearly 80 GB of images off of a cloud service because my subscription was about to expire. Right now my only internet connection is through my phone, so I tethered it to my PC in order to download the files.
It turns out I was roaming the entire time and I have roamed around 97.4 GB in my most recent billing cycle. Do you think they are going to terminate my contract? Or do you think I will get off with a warning?

I say this because extreme roaming data usage will grab attention and they will sort through IP's, just letting you know that as it just happened to my cousin. He hit 78G in data roaming and they found out he was using his phone for PC gaming while on vacation. And yep he is paying for it right now.
How is that even possible? I've been told if over half of your usage is roaming you will be disconnected. Even though Sprint claims roaming is unlimited.

it's in terms and conditions of the contact. They hold the right for excessive roaming.
And if they determine that you're tethering without paying, they'll claim fraud.

Oh no they'll cancel you contract when you don't pay that big bill. But yes you will have to pay for services rendered which is tethering and data used beyond the 5gigs given for tethering.
But like I said earlier carriers are not stupid and they will come after you and they know places lime this and could link your statement here as proof bit they really won't need that once they drop the IP bomb that will tell them what devices where used via your phone. Trust me they can tell but no system.is bullet proof so they cannot block it as some apps pull info via desktop browsers calls and a blanket block would kill those. So they just tag all the over the top users, especially when roaming is envolved.

Tmobile likely will find you.
Attempting to use T-Mobiles unlimited data plans to wifi hot spot or tether your PC is limited to 5gb. Additionally using Apps to attempt to disguise a PC tethered through your phone will increase the risk of being either detected or suspected of doing so with every Gb you burn beyond 5. Once either positively detected or highly suspected of tether abuse you will discover an unannounced throttle which persists for several billing periods beyond the last detected/suspecte tether abuse cycle.
