So just wanna make sure that if I have a rooted and unlocked optimus g running a custom ROM, I won't be charged anything extra for using WiFi hotspot right? Thanks for any info guys

Not unless you go past your limit. It mostly happens with AT&T and Sprint carriers, where if they somehow detect that you are using a hotspot (bit unlikely with a custom rom, but it can happen), then they will charge you.

Yeah I just let a buddy connect to it with his phone so he could use the browser and stuff. I use a lot of data as it is so they prob won't notice anything

I have unlimited, but they don't let me use a hotspot... so I use TrevE's Wireless Tether. They don't notice at all. (I have Sprint)

In one of the posts I seen before it said that AT&T and Sprint are the most common too notice someone using an excessive amount of data for unpaid tethering. How much is considered to be a lot. on average I use 120 to 180 gb a month. Have I just been lucky? I'm running rooted stock rom.
you guys just watch out cause here soon sprint is going to be shutting down what they call "server farms" running on thier new network. Not sure what all qualifies you for that class but just make sure you dont abuse it too much.

I would say you are very lucky. My step son was downloading about the same amount. And although they didn't mention tethering. They sent me a letter saying I had excessive data usage, (I have unlimited data plan) and had 10 days to stop the excessive usage on that line or they were going to cancel my account. This was on Sprint.

Well here the past month or so I've taken it easy. My schedule at worked changed so I didn't have the time for things I did. I guess I got lucky. I know that I read using a stock ROM is the easiest way to get caught. Since then I've installed the pacman ROM for my lgog. So I'm not so worried about that now.

I don't know much about hotspot plans and I just got on Sprint about 5 months ago. I always thought if you had the hotspot added onto your plan that it was capped data?
So my question is how do Rom's have unlimited data when they have the "hotspot hack" on it? Does Sprint not care about the cap? Or is the Hotspot plan not even capped for those who pay for it?
You get 5GB data with sprint hot spot plan
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Well when you use the hot spot app it does a sign in process and I guess that's how Sprint tracks down how you're using the phones data. With the hot spot hack they removed that sign in process which let's us connect without any errors saying you don't have the service..

Thank you for clearing that up. Now I understand. I know there is no cap but I'm paranoid. Is there a certain GB I should stay under so I don't get on Sprint's radar or do they not care? Last month I used over 7GB of just 4G through tethering. My 3G usage wasn't bad.

Don't worry about usage. I'm pretty sure the hotspot hack just cuts Sprint out of the equation and doesn't ask them for verification when you start the app

I'm not sure but I think the sprint hot spot is infrastructure mode, like a router, and wireless tether is ad hoc, like internet connection sharing on say a laptop.
Some wireless devices see ad hoc but not all. Some devices can be modified to see ad hoc. For example, my galaxy tab and the Motorola Xoom can't see it out of the box new. I had to replace the wpa_supplicant file on the tab with one that was modded for ad hoc networks.
On the other hand, infrastructure mode, everything wireless can see that. That's why infrastructure mode is preferred.

I went with their unlimited 4g data plan yesterday they told me I couldn't use hotspot anymore. So now I need to know is that feature now blocked on UN rooted phones? Because I'm running a custom tw Rom and the hotspot still works

You can use tethering aps from Google play market
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Yeah it should be blocked if you're unrooted. It should redirect you to a page asking if you want to add it to your plan (at least that's what it did for me), etc... I actually still had issues tethering when I went to a custom tw rom but when I finally switched over to a cm10 nightly I no longer had issues tethering.

has been working for me for days since I signed up for unlimited 4g data plan.
I always just used PDAnet. We had a storm come through the other day and knocked out my home internet for a couple days. I had PDAnet (that I downloaded from the PLAY store) and used it to watch Netflix. Worked like a charm. Root isn't even required.
So the consensus here is that even with the (no tether unlimited 4g) plan tethering still works just fine? Or someone said that you must use firefox on the tethered pc and another said that pda.net app must be used? I'm looking to save some money by switching from my 10gig data plan but need to know that it will still tether first.

No one said you have to use anything. If you are rooted, tethering will work fine. You can't use the built-in tethering if you are not running a custom rom.
I too am considering the plan. Very interested to know the actual charges are at the end of billing cycle. Contracts usually have additional fees every month. That being said the cost of the plan sound really good. I am averaging about 10mb download with highs of 16mb with my no contract tmobile plan. It sucks on beachside but was kind of expecting that, can go from 100kb to 8mb down within a block or two. Might just be interference.
I would also like to know if calling mart credits can be added to the account or other providers credits work. Then I would actually be paying less than the price they are asking. About 5 percent less when i can find the codes that are still valid!
Please keep us posted everyone! Let us know if thier are any problems after tethering and how much are you tethering percentage wise daily. I want to cut out the cable and would just go to tethering for home if i can.
Also thinking that after sept 12th,tmobile may try to lure others into thier plans with free phones on that value plan, hope so,then can sell that phone(one s?) and get that Gnexus i been wanting to try .

tethering to PC browsers is what sets it off. If yuo are going to tether to other phones or tablets, TMO wont make you pay for the service.

No
I was on the phone with T-Mo customer retention a few weeks ago. The rep told me I could upgrade to a plan with unlimited data with no throttling for the same thing I was already paying. I said yes, of course. I've been using a lot of data with no throttling.
I have Doggcatcher set to auto-download new podcasts over the network- this used to get me a throttling message, so I switched to WiFi. I switched back to network downloading a couple of weeks ago and I've been good ever since.

I've got a TZones plan, and would like to move to a Note 2. Which of the three Note models is the best choice for me between the AT&T I317, the Canadian T889V, and the international N7100/N7105. I'm in SoCal, so if LTE is coming I'm thinking it'll be here soon. I really need to be able to wifi tether, that is a key function for me.
Thanks for the advice and help!
No advice?
Ditch tzones, cause they could do a force upgrade, they are being more diligent in checking devices that log on, but if u was to go with tones, I would use a rooted international, which would only get you edge anyway.
Sent from my SGH-T889 using Tapatalk 2
Ok, assuming I do ditch tzones, is there a plan that doesn't have data caps and allows me to wifi tether?
Also, if I want to keep trying my luck, is the T889V the best choice? I've read the blocks on Canadian phones have been very few.
Wow, you're really still using tzones, huh? And you expect to be able to use unlimited 4g data with tethering? Ya Got balls, buddy
I can't help you with device choices, only people that could are the ones who have taken the risk and experimented with different devices.
But, I can tell you there is no data feature that's completely unlimited AND includes tethering officially. Tmobile uses throttling, so when you hit your "softcap* for the month, your internet speeds are turned down painfully slow (like down to 100kbps).
Assuming you changed to a value plan(since you seem like the type that is fine with paying full price upfront for the phone), here are your choices:
2gb softcap, no tethering = $10
5gb softcap, tethering = $25
10gb softcap, tethering = $55
Truly unlimited, no softcap, but also no tethering = $20
Note that some people are still finding ways to get around the tethering block on non-tethering data features, but results are extremely mixed. So if you're willing to experiment(and, of course, be violating tmobile's terms), you MIGHT be able tether under the radar. I suppose you are willing to, since you're still trying to use a 2004 flip phone data feature on a galaxy note 2
Anyway, good luck man. Hope that helps.

Hi guys, I use my phone as my internet connection through the built in usb tether (not paying for it however, on Paranoid Android), and every time I download a file (say, a game off of steam), I lose data even though my phone still says that it is connected to H+ or 3G or whatever with full bars. It begins at a constant 1.5-2mb/s download and goes down to 0b/s and stops. I've tried odin to stock, reflashing radio, and trying different roms. Even if I download on my phone, it will drop the connection while showing the H+ or 3G. I've read that it could be a SIM issue. Can someone verify what this is? Thanks!
Try a few different ROMs or even try paying for it.

I've used: stock 4.1.1, stock 4.1.2, Pac Man, CM10 (RC1 and 4), Slim Bean, Liquid Smooth, Free GS3, Frosty Jellybean, Codename Android, MIUI. I know that the tethering payment isn't the problem because I can't download large files from my phone either.

I called and asked T-Mobile if I was being throttled (perhaps not the best confirmation) and they said no. I do have one of the older unlimited plans so how do I know if I'm' being throttled? I've been tethering since last Sept so it shouldn't be starting now, should it? If it is this, how can I prevent it?
If you're on an unlimited plan you shouldn't get throttled. Also tmobile wouldve told you if you were and would try to sell you a new plan!
This was posted in the themes & apps section. Maybe it'll help?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2320195
I doubt it will if normal downloads are slow and cut off too.
I'd try a few different modems and posdibly flash back to stock, just to make sure it isn't software/firmware related.
Clean install of the MD5 or LJC root66 firmware. Backup first!
It could also be network related. Maybe. T-Mobile is refarming your area now, or a tower may be having problems
