Samsung Galaxy Note 3-partition and link2sd question - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note 3

Hello everybody,
This is such a great forum and just wanted to thanks very much for all your help, I have read from other threads but on different phones so, so I still have several questions:
I’m about to partition a 128 gig micro SD card. Most people seem to use smaller size.
I have:
Samsung Galaxy Note 3 – SM-N900T - Rooted lollipop version 5.0 with internal 26 gb gigs phone (was KitKat before). I left it to a rooted Lollipop and didn’t do any additional custom ROM since I like the S-note app and the standard TouchWiz launcher. And I actually enjoy the extra bloatware apps since it’s convenient for me.
Bought the latest app Link2SD Plus Version 4.0.11
BusyBox and SuperSU Installed
Bought a Micro SD card 128 GB around April 2015. It doesn’t seem like the newest model now.
Specific brand specs: SanDisk Ultra 128GB UHS-I/Class 10 Micro SDXC Memory Card Up To 48MB/s With Adapter- SDSDQUAN-128G-G4A [Newest Version]
Using PC laptop: Surface Pro 3 running Windows 8.1 (able to USB connect with the original Samsung cables, but not the generic cables)
Program to Partition: MiniTool-Partition-Wizard-Free-Edition
Questions:
What is the maximum partition size I can make? Is 70-90 gigs okay with this class of micro SD card? Or only 2-10 gigs since it will slow down maybe?
On Page 24 someone else also had a 128 gb and they split to 32 and 20 gb. I’m confused there as well since I thought just partition to one really big is easier and simpler?
I notice there is a Link2SD folder in my external sd card. And inside there is a “Bind” folder, then inside that there is “Data” folder and “obb” folder.
Is it okay to add a new Android/Obb folder inside this partition folder or I should leave those files in the phone memory?
Or better way to ask is: what’s the best way to transfer some new obb and data files/folders to the external card (since I have many apps to test out)? Should I bind the apps with the Link2SD app or can I just transfer them manually with the laptop via USB cable?
Also with this kind of phone, should I try Ext2 first? Or Ext4? I heard different opinions on this part. But it seems to be better on Ext2 since I’m using TouchWiz original system.
(Edit: Also heard about CronMod, but not sure if I should go to that route due to liking the original system format)
P.S. 1 = I have more than 500 apps already in the phone (not games just useful apps) and still want to put around 5-10 more gigs of apps inside my phone micro SD card lol. Battery does gets drained quickly but it's still pretty fine since I’m always charging or have extra charger packs with me. Actually just now now after deleting some power consuming apps which I want to get back later on still; the phone lasts for more than 36 hours surprisingly. Before it lasted only 8-12 hours.
P.S. 2 = Just wanted to let people know: I noticed one strange thing. Before trying to do the partition on the external micro SD card, I just tried transferring/moving parts of the internal apps (.apk files not the data, cache, or .dex files) to the external micro SD card. It worked, but moved only partial of course (average 50% of the file, sometimes 10%, and sometimes even up to 80%). But then a week or couple of days later, when that particular app got updated, I noticed it got transferred back into the internal phone memory and not in the external SD card anymore. This happened to several apps, and I had to keep transferring them back out with Link2SD, and was very inconvenient.
Have this happened to anyone else? I haven’t seen or heard anyone talking about this incident. So I decided to move all the partial apps back into the phone memory first, then try to do the partition instead. And I have to anyways since still not enough internal space. Hopefully when some particular apps get updated, it will stick to the external card after I try the partition method. (Also for some new apps I will disable the update since I don’t need to update some of them).
P.S. 3 = I’m also going to try to do the same methods on a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 8.4" 64GB (Wi-Fi) with another same Micro SD card 128 GB. Hope these two devices will last for several long years.
Again, thanks for reading this long detailed post (written with my current knowledge), but I didn’t want any confusion when people answer my questions.
Hopefully someone can answer with certainty and everything will go smoothly.
Also the steps I will be following is from this website, which is derived for your original post I believe.
Website title: “Tutorial: A Guide to Link2SD for Android” (can't post link yet since new member)

I always just make two partitions when using Link2SD. I usually make one around 8-10gb for apps and data and leave the rest for basic storage. The size of the partitions is completely up to you. You'll just need to experiment with your partition size for apps and data to see if it affects the speed. It's good you have a class 10 seeing as it's the fastest class. As for the bind part of your question, I would let the Link2SD app do all of the binding and moving aspects of the files and apps. It knows what to move and where to move it. I wouldn't worry about removing the files from the phone. If you get all of the settings correct with the app, it will take care of everything for you. Hopes this helps you out a little.

You're welcome. That should work out really good. The best way to set up Link2SD is make your EXT partition about 20% of your cards usable space. So with your 128gb card, you're looking at having an EXT partition of right under 26gb if you went by that math. I'd say set a 25gb partition and it would be perfect.

Question:
I was just about to do it, but I read another article from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2117275
(title forum: [TUT]How to Create Partition in SDcard/MicroSD for Windows user)
Based on the info above...
Should make it divisible by 128 or 256? and whats a good number then?
and after I looked at how many more apps data I was going to put it the card; I need it to be at least 40 to 50% extra space. I was about to put around 70 gigs (fat 32 primary) and 50 gigs (ext 2 primary)
What size do you think I should exactly put in then?

I would say just look at how much room you think you're gonna need for apps/data and then go about another 15-20GB. I'm not sure at what sizes you're looking at right now, but if you have I'd say 30GB of app/data to already move, then make about a 45-50GB partition for that. So your math is looking pretty good on that. I wouldn't really go by that tutorial you linked. And I wouldn't worry about the going by 128 and 256 thing, just make it the size you want. This is the link I tell most people to go by.

yup thanks-I am partitioning based on that guide as well
that guide is clear except for the steps explaining how to partition the ext 2 part (they should have showed specific pictures and additional steps that we have to right click the Unallocated part to make the ext 2 part after making the primary FAT32 part)
also:
Questions 2:
128 gb micro SD card (actually 119 to 120 gb free)
Ext 2 = 51,200 mb / 256 = 200 or 51,200 mb / 128 = 400 so it’s divisible
FAT32 = 68,800 mb / 256 = 268.75 or 68,000 mb / 128 = 537.5 so it’s NOT divisible, will this be a problem? it seems like its okay then
120,000 - 51200 = 68,800 mb
51,200 mb/ 120,000 = 0.4266666666666667 = 42.666667% (ext 2 primary) so about 51 gb here
68,800 mb/ 120,000 = 0.5733333333333333 = 57.333333% (FAT32 primary) so about 68 gb here

I've just done it so much it's easy for me now with that tool.
You're making your storage partition first. Select the partition type then the size you want and click "Ok"
You'll see two partitions after that's complete.
Click the Unallocated space and hit yes for new. Select EXT2 as partition type and click "Ok"
After that's complete the card is ready to use Link2SD
I can just see the program in my head I've done it so much. Haha
But yeah your calculations look good to me and shouldn't be a problem.

[Q] S2E sees EXT3 but won't move data over (Defy w/ CM7 5.31 nightly)

I have an 8GB card I've partitioned using a gparted livecd to have a 6.4 gig FAT32 and a 1 gig EXT3. S2E sees the EXT3 partition, and tells me how much space is there is on it when I press the "information" button. So it can see it.
Then I tick some boxes (usually just the top 3, Applications, Private Apps, and Application Data) and the "moving from /data to /sd-ext, Reboot is required!" notice appears under. I restart and check in with S2E again - it still says "moving from /data to /sd-ext, Reboot is required!" under all the boxes I checked. Nothing is ever moved to the card and it stays that way no matter how many times I reboot.
I have tried creating a fat32 partition at the end of the card first, then adding an EXT3 at the beginning. Also the reverse of that. Tried this scenario with no alignment, alignment to cylinders, and alignment to MB.
For awhile I was making a 32 MB swap partition also but I guess this not needed on CM7, so I stopped doing it. Would doing it through ADB be better? I tried that first but when I try to use "upgrade_fs" to convert EXT2 to EXT3 the shell informs me that I don't have the script and I can't find it anywhere online. Should I try with SDPARTED? Someone wrote it was deprecated.
Could it be the card? $15 dollars on ebay - I can't post the URL to the exact card I'm using due to forum restriction but it is listed as "8GB Micro SD Class 6 TF Flash SDHC"
EDIT: now the EXT3 partition disappears completely from time to time, according to S2E. I have set everything back to internal storage.
Maybe
Does the app need to see the 1st partition only? Alas, maybe the combo partition schema is the source of disappointment?
I reapportioned the partitions and everything on this end seems nice.
What do you mean? Did you create them in certain order?

On the CM7 thread, some people are complaining about SD card issues. Many say they have 8gb class 6 - this is what I have. I got mine from ebay. Sometimes now the phone hangs when accessing card, like for looking at gallery and taking photos.
Is it possible we just got ****ty counterfeit SD cards? Mine was ridiculously cheap.
I will test my card with that tool, forgot the name, and report back.

Yes, so it turns out I had a bad SD-Card. Bad sectors everywhere.
And now I have ten posts. This ten post limit is really stupid. Now I can finally post in the Defy CM7 thread, christ.

Is it normal for Link2SD?

A couple weeks ago I tried installing/configuring Link2SD because of low internal memory space using a tutorial found here on XDA, but for some reason it didn't work properly. I formatted and partitioned the SD card as it was on the tutorial (fat32, ext2/ext4 and a linux swap partition) and when I open Link2SD and tried to select a filesystem i couldn't. I pressed on all of them, but the same windows appeared.
In the past week I found another tutorial (not on XDA) which didn't say anything about ext2/4 or linux swap partitions, so I just made 2 fat32 partitions, and it works fine.
Long story short: I do have more space, but the internal storage still keeps reducing. Is it normal? Is it just the data of the apps? If it is just the data, can I move them to the SD card somehow?
By the way, I'm using CM 7.2.

its normal for internal memory to reduce slightly, but if keeps on reducing too much, then you might have a problem...
try this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27538212
I have around 30 apps installed (and only 3-5 of them are above 10 MB) and about 50 MB free space, is it still normal?
It is enough for me at the time so it is not really a big problem, I just didn't know if it should do this. But I will check out what you linked, thanks

SD card (too) slow?

Hello,
I compare my results with Antutu benchmark with other I found here and on the Internet.
My overall score is above 5300, but my concern is low read/write speed of my SD card:
(screen in attachement)
I have 32 GB SanDisk Ultra Class 10 with up to 30 MB/s read/write card. I know I wouldnt achieve such speed in practice, but I believe 5.6 MB/s write and 8 MB/s read is far too slow for that card and that phone.
I have second partiotion (for Link2SD) formatted with ext2 (2GB), the rest ("regular") partition is FAT32 (~30GB)
I am using Xperia Ultimate HD 2.0.3, stock kernel (locked BL)
Any suggestions?

sorry for that - it worked on my desktop. now file was moved to attachements
the read is slow, im gonna try antutu om my device, but cant install now. It says it dont have memory, but i have over half empty
edit:
What class is that sd-card?
It is class 10 card, 32GB, with up to 30 MB/s read/write (as declared by SanDisk
Yes, up to 30 MB/s. It means max that, but can be any speed lower from it
But Class 10 should be min 10 MB/s. Try formatting your SDcard, then check again.
It installed at least. Heres my results on stock sd card
If you got root try this:
Im not responsible for any harm that may happen, but this should be safe
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mehrmann.sdbooster
Install that app, ir similar
Set it to 1024, apply (best one for me, try your self. Dont go over 8000. 1024, 2048 and 3072 is safe)
Retest your sd card with antutu.
This is what i got on 1024

Great, thank you guys,
I think I will try booth suggestions - card re-format and SD card booster.
What is the option to back up partitions on SD cards?
I mean "second" partition that is not usually visible under windows, as it is second and ext2..
Or backup with TB, copy files to hdd, format and than copy back, and use backup to restore?
try to browse the second partition with WinRAR. It shows everything. If not use EASEUS Partition manager
Are there any published benchmarks for SD cards? I want to buy a 32GB card for use with Link2SD (i.e. apps running directly off the card) as well as for documents/media files, so I want it to be fast.

The best is cwm recovery. X-Part is fine also.
Do backup.
Then just copy fat32 partition on PC.
Now format sd card. (in usb sd card reader)
Repartition it again.
Put data back on fat32 partition. (return card into phone)
Now boot your phone into recovery.
Restore sd-ext.
That's it.
Please, note that sd cards must be formatted with sd card formatter from sd card association and NOT from operating system.
Then use gparted bootable disc to add ext2 partition.
Make sure MiB alignment is on.
Now, performance will be ok.
For sure add higher value in sd booster then default is.

well, I did re-format and tweaked with SD-tool and its a bit better now: my write speed is still low (about 6-7 MB/s), but write speed significantly improved; its now almost 30 MB/s (28-29 on average).

[Q] Question about "on board" SDcard0 N5110

Hi everyone,
I was at a store today, looking at a Galaxy tab 10" running android 4.2.2.
What I noticed when I checked settings/storage, was that it had no more internal Sdcard0 but a full 16gb partition running the Android system and about 5-6Gb free space for additional programs to install??
So here is my guestion: is this possible on the Note N5110?
What I want to do (if possible) is to "delete" the "stock" SdCard0 and expand the internal 16gb internal mem to one partition.
Then, (if i'm correct) when an SDcard of 64Gb (or less) is inserted, it will be recognized as SdCard0 instead of ExtSdcard.
I have rooted my N5110 and changed the 64Gb to be Sdcard0 and the 10gb as ExtSDcard, but that's a bit buggy sometimes.
It swaps the SDcard0/ExtSDCard mem around from time to time depending on which program you start (very annoying).
Has anyone done this? Did I miss a thread in XDA?
I tried searching, but couldn't find if this is possible or not.
Hope anyone want to answer my question
thanks!!
Wow, nobody?
I'm sure you can "trick" the android os to use the full internal rom instead of creating partitions right?
if there is a thread I missed, please let me know.

There is a script that allows you to flip the sd for the internal, which then allows apps to be installed to the sd card. Dont know if this is the kind of solution you are looking for. ?...Check link below, its for the note 2 so any and all damages done are on your head....

Yes, i've seen that script, used it, it works fine.
but, what I mean is, is there a way to combine the internal (stock) memory on the device.
Here is how I see it:
the device has 16gb internal memory in total.
however, 6gb has been partitioned for the android OS.
10gb is your internal storage to use. (that's 6gb os partition and 10gb external partition = 16gb
so my question again, can I combine those tow to 1 partition = 16gb OS partition and use the external SD card I bought as sdcard0.
one more time;
current setup:
6gb OS
10gb = sdcard0
64gb = ExtSdCard
what I want =

Using Link2SD with Directory Bind.

Hi,
I have a couple of questions.
Question 1:
So, to increase the available memory on my C1904, I installed Link2SD, works beautifully, but the app(which we have to move to the card) must be in the phone memory first, which is my problem, my phone just has 600MB left! I installed 'Directory Bind' for that, it basically links the app's data folder (phone memory/Android/data/app.something.something) to the SD Card in a way that the phone is tricked into "thinking" that the folder we create on the SD card(SD Card/Android/data/app.something.something) is a part of the internal memory, I. E. It binds the two.
But, directory bind has this problem where you have to select the "bind" option whenever you want to use that app data from the SD Card.
So, how about we use DB(Directory Bind) to download big files into the main partition of the SD card and then use Link2SD on it(while still bound), which will take the files to the ext2 partition on the SD Card(used by Link2SD), well, most of them. Then, the leftovers (very small in size) can be moved to the phone memory.
The benefit will be that we won't have to bind it again and again and won't have to worry about USB Connection with a computer as the ext2 partition is never disconnected!
What do you guys think? Will it work ?
Question 2:
I am going to put the game/app files in the SD Card, that means I'll need a fast SD as well.
What class will be the best to buy? 10 OR 6? OR will class 4 do good enough?
TY.

Woops... I'm sorry for posting in the wrong section, will keep that in mind from now on.
I did use the swap sd script, but it still used to save the data in the internal memory even though it recognized the card as the internal memory!
Are faster cards than class 10 even available!? According to a few articles 4 or more than 4 will do just fine. True?

game data will goto sdcard, but game apk goes to internal...thats y use link2sd...link apk to 2nd partition of sd...problem solved..
see my internal space with 90+ apps....many big sized games
not like class 12 but in class 10 there is advanced version..
Class Minimum performance Application
Class 2 2 MB/s SD video recording
Class 4 4 MB/s High-definition video (HD) recording including Full HD (from 720p to 1080p/1080i)
Class 6 6 MB/s
Class 10 10 MB/s Full HD (1080p) video recording and consecutive recording of HD stills (high-speed data bus)
UHS Speed Class 1 (U1) 10 MB/s Real-time broadcasts and large HD video files (UHS bus)
UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) 30 MB/s 4K video files (UHS bus)
uhs1,uhs3 are also class 10 but with more speed
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital
uhs-1 32gb---->here
normal class 10---->here
see speed difference is 20mb+...but price just 300-400 more
i have seen lag on class 4 8gb in my phone..now using class 10...no lag
Thanks for the info. I seriously didn't know that! I'll buy a class 10 now for sure.
Also if I swap the storage now, will it conflict with Link2SD?
