A couple weeks ago I tried installing/configuring Link2SD because of low internal memory space using a tutorial found here on XDA, but for some reason it didn't work properly. I formatted and partitioned the SD card as it was on the tutorial (fat32, ext2/ext4 and a linux swap partition) and when I open Link2SD and tried to select a filesystem i couldn't. I pressed on all of them, but the same windows appeared.
In the past week I found another tutorial (not on XDA) which didn't say anything about ext2/4 or linux swap partitions, so I just made 2 fat32 partitions, and it works fine.
Long story short: I do have more space, but the internal storage still keeps reducing. Is it normal? Is it just the data of the apps? If it is just the data, can I move them to the SD card somehow?
By the way, I'm using CM 7.2.

its normal for internal memory to reduce slightly, but if keeps on reducing too much, then you might have a problem...
try this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27538212
I have around 30 apps installed (and only 3-5 of them are above 10 MB) and about 50 MB free space, is it still normal?
It is enough for me at the time so it is not really a big problem, I just didn't know if it should do this. But I will check out what you linked, thanks

I have an 8GB card I've partitioned using a gparted livecd to have a 6.4 gig FAT32 and a 1 gig EXT3. S2E sees the EXT3 partition, and tells me how much space is there is on it when I press the "information" button. So it can see it.
Then I tick some boxes (usually just the top 3, Applications, Private Apps, and Application Data) and the "moving from /data to /sd-ext, Reboot is required!" notice appears under. I restart and check in with S2E again - it still says "moving from /data to /sd-ext, Reboot is required!" under all the boxes I checked. Nothing is ever moved to the card and it stays that way no matter how many times I reboot.
I have tried creating a fat32 partition at the end of the card first, then adding an EXT3 at the beginning. Also the reverse of that. Tried this scenario with no alignment, alignment to cylinders, and alignment to MB.
For awhile I was making a 32 MB swap partition also but I guess this not needed on CM7, so I stopped doing it. Would doing it through ADB be better? I tried that first but when I try to use "upgrade_fs" to convert EXT2 to EXT3 the shell informs me that I don't have the script and I can't find it anywhere online. Should I try with SDPARTED? Someone wrote it was deprecated.
Could it be the card? $15 dollars on ebay - I can't post the URL to the exact card I'm using due to forum restriction but it is listed as "8GB Micro SD Class 6 TF Flash SDHC"
EDIT: now the EXT3 partition disappears completely from time to time, according to S2E. I have set everything back to internal storage.
Maybe
Does the app need to see the 1st partition only? Alas, maybe the combo partition schema is the source of disappointment?
I reapportioned the partitions and everything on this end seems nice.
What do you mean? Did you create them in certain order?

On the CM7 thread, some people are complaining about SD card issues. Many say they have 8gb class 6 - this is what I have. I got mine from ebay. Sometimes now the phone hangs when accessing card, like for looking at gallery and taking photos.
Is it possible we just got ****ty counterfeit SD cards? Mine was ridiculously cheap.
I will test my card with that tool, forgot the name, and report back.

Yes, so it turns out I had a bad SD-Card. Bad sectors everywhere.
And now I have ten posts. This ten post limit is really stupid. Now I can finally post in the Defy CM7 thread, christ.
My girlfriend got the HTC Wildfire S for MetroPCS a couple of weeks ago. It is a nice phone except for one little problem: The internal memory is crap. She has exactly 5 apps installed, all are moved to SD, and she has 7.14 MB or internal memory free. It is running the stock 2.3 Rom rooted. I need some help figuring out what to do. Before you guys make suggestions let me list what I have already done:
1. S-OFF and rooted, removed all bloatware, which moved it from 3.21 MB to 8 MB which seems like BS because a few of those apps were about 6 MB in size.
2. Moved apps to SD card partially in the applications menu in settings.
3. Cleaned caches
4. Uninstalled almost every application.
This is very frustrating because she cant update apps, she cant download apps, and it is frustrating because I have the old Huawei Ascend on CM7 and I have more apps and am faster than her phone, its ridiculous, I also wonder why after removing over 60MB or crap and bloatware it freed up about 7MB. Makes no sense. I don't want to do DT's app2sd script yet because she doesn't have a way to back up her stuff before the partition of the SD card. If anyone can explain another way or something I can do to fix this please..... It would be greatly appreciated.
Use Partition Wizard Home (Free) to resize your FAT32 partition and create your Ext(whatever your kernel supports) partition on a windows machine.
No need to back up. Doesn't destroy partitions.
My preference is Link2SD free from the market.
You can mass move your apps, dalvik cache and library files to the Ext(Probably Ext2 with stock rom kernel) from the SD card and internal to your Ext partition very easy.
Also you can set it up to auto do this when new apps are installed and choose which apps you want to keep fully internal for faster booting, startup, etc.

If your card is corrupt and can't be read try a program like Recuva on the PC (free) to get your files from it.

Format it in windows using the partition software I mentioned and make sure it is:
1/ Fat32
2/ A Primary not a Logical partition
3/ Make it the Active partition
thanks I have been working on it and got it to see the sd card
what about the 2 partion should it be ext2 ext 3 or fad 32 I guss it dose not matter I have tried all 3 but link2sd will not see the 2 partion

I struggled like crazy with this problem before I rooted my phone and got an extra partition to store app data and cashe.
I guess you ask this question because you dont want to root your phone. I remember this thread from the time I used to struggle with this exact problem. Perhaps they have new ways to increase the int.memory these days.

The best way i've found this is to root your phone and install Cyanogenmod 7.1, and use an app available from the Play Store called S2E. You will need to prep your SD card though - I used a card reader, inserted it into my computer and booted off a Ubuntu Live CD, then use Gparted to make two partitions - one large main fat32 partition for music etc, and a 1GB ext4 partition after the fat32 one for apps. Once you have that, put it back in the phone and you can setup S2E to move entire apps to the SD card I have about 90 apps on there now, works perfect, makes the phone better than new! Hope this helps.

please please tell me more about it .. i am using latest version of miui. can i use S2E ? Miui already required a hidden partition for installation purposes. Do I need to create another on ?
Miui doesn't support S2E I believe as it designed for Cyanogenmod. There is another application called link2sd (I think) which does the same sort of job. I remember finding it ages ago and it not working well with Cyanogenmod though. Cyanogenmod 7.1 seems to be the most stable ROM around at the moment though, just a little slow is my only quarrel. This is from my experience anyway, haven't tried ICS ROMs. Tried Miui for about 10 minutes and didn't like it personally.
Try the ICS BCM 3.1U0
It IS working fabulous.
And it has a built in app called Mounts2SD. It seems that I can use both my internal and the extra partition and the space on my SD-card.
I highly recommend that you format your SD-card and get a 512mb partition. Then its smooth sailing.
Which ROM do you currently use?
MiniTool partition wizard is not working on that, every time I try to make 2 partitions setting them primary, MiniTool automatically changes the 2nd one to logical, after applying the changes. Plus, now every time I connect my SD card it shows the same old partitions, but in my phone it is only one partition (I erased the card through my Wildfire S utility after not working 2 primary partition thing).
I connected it with phone, and memory card reader, same result. Plus when I connect it to computer by card reader/phone and try to format it, it says it is write protected.............
I want to make to partitions on one SD card for link2SD app of android. What to do?????

I broked the lock slide but result was same.................Anyway I found another way to do it,,,,,,,Clockworkmod.
But now new problem is, one app google map, it is converted to user app and then linked to SD card, but the phone is still showing that it is taking up 22 mb space in the internal memory...........(((((
Internal memory - linked apps: Google Currents, Google Maps
I find (using the wonderful little app DiskUsage) that some linked apps still use the internal memory for data that they cache.
Google Currents was the worst offender (a varying difference of approximately 50 megs in the internal storage when I install/uninstall), so I have uninstalled it, but have it backed up. This is on the off-chance that its data storage, is in the future, given the option to choose the SD card instead.
Maybe I shouldn't be linking all the files (exclude the cache linking option for these apps in Link2sd?) of these apps. Any further advice on that would be great! I tried hard to find the answer elsewhere. I'll experiment in the meantime, as I do like Currents!
I would tolerate the Maps usage as for me it can be crucial information needed in low data coverage areas ...

I have the same problem and solved !!!!!!
Like you,I was so irritated in that situation,
I am replying this post for everyone because i know you are reading this post with huge headache.so the solution is simple as i tried and worked for me
The problem we facing is,we lost the fat32 supporting file,we need to fix into it,so for this i was tried putting the memory card in other mobiles and tried it,in the last attempt putting in nokia mp3 phone and i did format.
Finally it fixed me the problem much more than tried formatting in android mobiles
So i recommend you to format with any java keypad mobiles which has the compatibility to run memory cards. if you have,Because it is working on basic platform.it will insert the basic necessity of sd card such as fat32etc...,in your card.If its not working try formatting with many mobiles as you can.Definitely it will work.:good:
can anybody solve this problem? does minitool partition wizard be helpful? I met the same problem now, and i dont know how to do because now there is not much person using Android.
Have been using Link2SD now for over a month without any problem.
I have a 64 GB micro-SD card formatted with 2 partitions. One is the fat32 partition for storing my own stuff (accessible through file explorer), and the other is an ext2 partition that is meant for Link2SD to "link" apps to. Both partitions are roughly of equal size (though in hindsight I would have like to make the ext2 partition smaller). I formatted + partitioned the SD card using MiniTool partition wizard in Windows.
As of yesterday the 2nd partition is not being mounted any more. I get the error as in attached screenshot. This error comes after Link2SD asks me to select what the file format of the 2nd partition is.
Because of this, all of the apps that are linked to the SD card in some way are now showing as not installed on my device (most are games, but one is a magazine-reading app). An attempt at reinstalling 1 or 2 of these apps through google play results in an error saying something like "there was an error installing this app".
I tried to search the forums on this error but most people have similar issues only when they are ~starting~ with Link2SD. I haven't found anyone who has the issue like this after using Link2SD for a bit of time...
I am wondering if there is a workaround to this. It would be nice to get those apps back onto the device at the very least (I have 4 GB of space to spare...), and at the very best get everything back to working condition again.
(note: I started to notice that certain apps started naming the SD card as a bunch of symbols instead of "SD card" as they usually do.....not sure if this is related or not)
*bump*
Should mention that I"m running a rooted device with stock ROM (took out many of the built-in apps).
I am debating whether to unmount the SD (physically take it out), and reformat the 2nd partition to ext4 or FAT32 and try again with Link2SD
What I'm afraid of is losing all those apps and not being able to reinstall them again....(as I am already getting errors with this in Google Play)

I've been having issues with it for a while myself. Sometimes after a reboot, a whole lot of apps disappear. I give it another reboot and they come back, but it's a pain in the arse because then I need to manually go place them back onto my home screen.

I have tried multiple reboots....no such luck.
I'm reading elsewhere that the culprit may be Link2SD itself. Have emailed the developer (hopefully they respond).
The ext2 partition on the card is officially or unofficially fried. I really can't see anything on it (tried several linux file system viewers). I guess I'll keep the card mounted (with half the space technically gone) until there happens to be some way to deal with this issue....

I tried Link2SD with 3 different SD cards.
One was a test (4 GB card or less, can't remember now), to make sure the program worked.
The other was an 8GB card. Which I eventually swapped out for...
...a 64 GB card.
I had manually partitioned the 8 and 64 GB cards prior to using them in Link2SD
I also re-partitioned the 64 GB card a 2nd time when Link2SD (and therefore my tablet itself) stopped seeing the 2nd partition on the 64 GB card.
This "breaking" problem came up on both the 8 GB and 64 GB cards.
So one of the following at fault: my tablet, 2 different SD cards, or the app itself.
I am inclined to believe it's Link2SD as the reviews on the app store say similar things to what my problem is.
