Firstly, I apologize if this question has been asked a 1000 times before. Unfortunately I couldn't find such a thread when I went through the forums, probably because this is a slightly old device and such questions most likely were asked WAY back in 2011, I guess.
I am currently a Motorola Droid X2 owner. After putting up with Motorola and its equally crappy phone for months, I finally convinced the VZW customer care rep to give me a different phone and I chose the Dinc2, which will arrive at my home on Monday. I do believe that the Dinc2 is BETTER than the DX2 in almost every aspect: has an unlockable Bootloader, is guaranteed to get ICS from HTC eventually and has a boot load of awesome custom ROMs! If you head over to the DX2 community, compared to this, it may feel like a ghost town! (The only active dev is busy with school and has no time, so the dev section has hardly gotten any news for the last 2-3 months!!! ) Plus my DX2 is plagued with issues.
In this regard, I would like to know if any of you have any knowledgeable opinions on whether the Dinc2 is indeed better than the DX2. Secondly, what are the major issues people are facing with this phone? My DX2 has at least 6-7 major issues.
Now, I would like to know:
1. How easy is rooting on this phone? Is there a tutorial? Is it reversible?
2. How easy is it to achieve S-OFF? Is it reversible?
3. I have not read anything about unlocking bootloaders to be a requirement to install any ROM. Is it necessary to unlock the BL to install ICS/CM9/MIUI ROMs? Is it reversible?
4. My most important query is can I revert back to 100% stock (i.e. unrooted, S-ON and locked bootloader, if I had to unlock it in the first place) in case I am not satisfied with the phone and want a different Dinc2 or may be a different device?
Thank you all for your help! Kindly do reply to this thread and answer as many of my questions as you can!!
Looking forward to enjoy my Dinc2 and be a part of this community!
Cheers! \m/
Welcome to the Incredible 2 Community!
1 & 2) I rooted mine in an hour. This includes the research I did to know how to do it (Google 'Revolutionary Incredible 2'). I did S-Off, cause I don't see the point of rooting if someone leaves S-On. It is entirely reversible. I have also done that.
3) When you root your phone, you are unlocking your bootloader. That is why you can flash ROMs and the like. It's been recommended not to use HTC's unlocker, as you are telling HTC that you did it. That is up to you, but you will still have S-On.
4) Same question as 1 & 2? Yes. I have done it.
HTC > Motorola every time.
Quick word of advice: I guarantee you that all these questions are on the internet. Try to search better. Help us keep these forums clean of redundant posts. Again, Welcome to the Incredible 2 Community.

Thanks a lot! And I am soooo sorry for cluttering up the forum. I know how that feels (The transformer prime forum, for instance, is cluttered with people complaining about the same thing and/or posting the same info, news or problems!)
Glad to know that rooting is very easy and also glad to know that achieving S-OFF is also easy and super glad to know that both these are reversible. Also happy to know that it is unnecessary to use HTC's unlock method and tell them that you unlocked the phone!
I am very excited to be getting this phone! So looking forward to Monday and finally having a good phone!

Welcome aboard, I think you'll find this is a pretty helpful group here.
Pretty much any and all of your questions have been compiled into this thread Click me.
Take a look around the dev forum for roms. Bunch of good stuff in there

Yes. My nephew had to get a replacement Dinc2 and it only took 10 minutes to downgrade and s-off. I would be surprised that you wouldn't have .98 bootloader. Anyways, its easy.
2. How easy is it to achieve S-OFF? Is it reversible?

Yes and Yes, but isn't for the faint of heart.

Since the Dinc2 is s-off, I wouldn't recommend anything else. HTCdev unlock tool is useless because we have s-off and ROM flashes are very easy.
4. My most important query is can I revert back to 100% stock (i.e. unrooted, S-ON and locked bootloader, if I had to unlock it in the first place) in case I am not satisfied with the phone and want a different Dinc2 or may be a different device?

Kind of already answered this question. Re-locking the bootloader will include the latest RUU.
I've got a bunch of guides down in my sig. Looks like the others have answered your q's.

Moving to Q&A
Hi there,
I've recently learned that the only way to be able to truly customize my phone is through rooting it. However this is a process Im not so familiar with and something I've heard can end up badly. Now I've watched a couple of video's on youtube about what to do and how to do it. But I have one major question. In each video I seem to watch, none of them are the developer edition. I remember reading, before purchasing the phone, that the developer edition came with an unlocked bootloader? Of which I am not certain as to what that is. But each time, in the videos, they go to the HTCdev website to request the bootloader to be unlocked or something of the sort. I also read somewhere by doing that, they are able to cross-reference the fact you've rooted your phone and deny complete warranty replacements. That is assuming you did root your phone in the end. My main concern is losing this warranty, I do not wish to void it at all, and by registering that you have kind of puts me off rooting my device. But then I began thinking, my bootloader is already unlocked, does this mean I don't have to register with that HTCdev website? and will this mean I can root it without them knowing, so I am then able to restore it (Of which i will need to learn) and get it replaced if something is to happen to my phone?
I know there are a lot of questions involved in this post! Sorry if i'm asking ridiculous things, but I am new to this kind of stuff!
Cheers,
Exactly, you're bootloader is already unlocked . all you really need to do is push a custom recovery to be rooted.
Here is all you need for customizing.

Hello, so I'm going to be receiving my HTC One M9 tommorrow morning, and I was hoping the XDA community could help me with some fundemental questions regarding my new phone.
So, first off, this is a Verizon version, but I'm 95% certain that it comes factory unlocked. HTC6535LVWSG. I hear some people have issues rooting/S-OFFing the Verizon version (VZW at least, but I don't think mine is), but if it's not that version (or already unlocked, for that matter), does that mean that I will be able to load up any recovery from here? Assuming that I've gotten a recovery installed (my past phone was an EVO 3D, which I've tinkered quite a bit with), will I be able to use ROMs posted here? Or will I need to use specially made Verizon ROMs?
All of that aside, do you know where I can find the Marshmellow RUU that I heard just came out for the M9? As mentioned in the earlier paragraph, will I need a special GSM version for it?
EDIT: I found the news post at HTC, I'm assuming that it would work for any M9.
Thanks for anyone who responds!

NO! SLOW DOWN!
If you get a Verizon M9 do not flash anything!! Unless its specifically for the Verizon M9 or the developer of the ROM/Kernel states it will work with CDMA or Verizon M9's.
As of right now only the GSM Marshmallow update is out. Do not flash this RUU/update on a Verizon M9. It's better if you start off by just looking around for Verizon M9 threads. Ask questions in other threads if that particular ROM or file will work on a Verizon M9 or better yet read through most if not all the posts in those threads because more often than not someone in your shoes has already asked the same question.
But if you received a locked/S-ON device do not update/change anything on that phone until you've freshen up on whether or not S-OFF/Rooting is available for the software that comes already on it. It'll save you the headache of playing around with a new phone and it auto updates now your stuck without S-OFF.
Also don't ask questions in "General" that's what the Q&A section is for.
Congratulations! I think you'll be pleased with the M9.
Diaclaimer: I'm a hobbyist and not an expert - you should do some reading of threads and
research before attempting to hack your phone.
A few things:
- you may find better help in the Verizon HTC M9 forums (http://forum.xda-developers.com/verizon-one-m9)
- S-OFF is currently only possible on Verizon's variant of the M9 via a Java Clip. They're expensive, but there are fellow XDA members who own them and are willing to use theirs on your phone, usually for a reasonable fee
- until your bootloader is unlocked (pretty sure that your phone will NOT come that way - Verizon is not user-friendly) or you are S-OFF, you will not be able to flash a custom anything (recovery or ROM). Attempting to do so may render your phone unusable.
- Marshmallow has been released officially for the developer/unlocked variant of the M9, which is GSM-only. The Verizon variant is CDMA; the RUU will fail to install on your device.
Hope this is helpful. You probably have a bit more effort to go through to be able to hack your phone, but it's very doable and worth the effort. The M9 is a solid device and all the moreso once you have S-OFF (or an unlocked bootloader) and root.
Unfortunately, UPS Next Day Air has failed me, with yet another delay, so I won't have the phone today. :v
I know it's already paid off, and I'm pretty sure it's factory unlocked. What determines if it's a VWZ version or not? How does this affect my modding processes? I hear of several people who can do stuff to "non-VWZ" versions.
dottat said:
Not for the vzw m9. Big difference is the versions they can do already can use htc dev to bootloader unlock and root. Vzw is another can of worms because we need a root exploit before anything can happen.

So, I got the phone today. It was supposed to be delayed but I guess they managed to deliver it! I have to go, so the phone is gonna sit here for a couple hours, but it can boot into the bootloader (I'm not sure if this is a sign that it can be unlocked, but we'll see, I guess.)

Any phone can boot into the bootloader. To determine your phone's status, you'll need to look at the upper left corner when you are in bootloader mode: does it say 'unlocked' or 'locked'? Similarly, does it say 'S-ON' or 'S-OFF'?
First of all you should, in my opinion, deal with the differences of a CDSM to a GSM device in detail and read especially the Verizon specific threads in this forum very carefull.
Seconed to it you should pick up the full information about block based OTA politics, and the major changes regarding moddifications to Android 5.1.1. If never done before you should also read the basic threads abaut unlocking, rooting, fastboot as well as adb commands. If need for further help occurs it is hightly important to be able to explain when, where and assumingly why a problem/error occured.
Besides this have fun with your One M9!

Ah, I know the ins and outs of adb and fastboot already, as I've had my fair share of working with the HTC bootloader-- however I just wanted to clarify some things that I had not previously known. Thanks for the advise, though.
Guys please, anyone can verify that the buttons (power and volume) are a bit 'down after a few months of use??
I just want to make sure that everything is crystal clear. I have spent weeks and many, many hours pouring over numerous, differing guides on how to root the 910V and run a custom 6.0+ ROM - all of them missing different vital chunks of information. Correct me if I am wrong:
You have to temp-root the device and quickly run an unlocking script written by an unknown source before the phone completely locks up and reboots itself. Then if you're lucky and the script is successful after 17 attempts and 4 battery re-charges, the stock 5.1.1 ROM will refuse to boot and you'll only be able to access the stock recovery with an "unlocked" flag on it. Then you'll go to install TWRP, try and flash a custom MM ROM only to find that wifi, camera, and all sensors don't work on any MM ROM without flashing the updated CPD1 bootloader firmware (this is not explicitly mentioned in multiple different guides for rooting and unlocking, including the official): Example here and here. Oh, and good luck using the thread search tool to find replies that mention this wifi issue in any of the 500 pages of replies that follow the official rooting and unlocking guide! The search tool has been broken for weeks and you'll get: "Sorry, we encountered an error processing your request. Please go back and retry or wait a minute. The Administrators have been notified of this error". Clearly Admins either aren't being contacted or don't care.
Then if you are repeatedly unsuccessful in flashing the updated bootloader firmware using the BPA1-CPD1 Hybrid Lollipop ROM developed by hsbadr in this guide, you might try and flash the stock 6.0+ bootloader firmware found here, (because you can't find anything with the broken search tool, it seems like a logical thing to do, and there are absolutely NO write-ups that mention extremely simple things - (like whether or not the updated stock VZW bootloader firmware will re-lock the bootloader.) However, if you do this, the bootloader re-locks itself, the phone bricks itself into a boot loop, and you have to factory flash VZW's MM ROM. If you manage to do that without completely losing your sanity, then you have to flash VZW's 5.1.1 ROM while on 6.0.1 firmware, which will take 6+ tries to get working and might not work at all. Then you have to boot into 5.1.1, re-temp root, quickly re-run the shady bootloader unlocker script before the phone force-restarts, go back to having an unbootable ROM, re-flash TWRP, then flash a custom 6.0+ ROM.
Am I understanding all of this right? I just want to make sure that I am not unaware of something, because god forbid anyone ever be unaware of something, lest this YOU DIDN'T READ!!! YOU DIDN'T READ!!!!! mantra get thrown around - as if any of you could seriously have the audacity to claim that these cluttered, fragmented guides on 15 different links represent some sort of fool-proof cohesive and coherent guide in your warped minds.
So am I missing anything? Some crucial step that I still might be unaware of? No? Great. Rant done. TL;DR: This process is waaaaaay too complicated for most people. I put myself in this category as a professional engineer that's rooted and flashed custom ROMs on many different phones.

The processes were easy enough...and some like me had temp root on first or second try. If you've spent weeks and weeks trying to figure this all out, I'm not sure anyone can help you. There are people in these threads that have answered every question you've brought up, and helped people get through. I know you must be some kind of troll with your "one post" and claiming you've been rooting blah blah blah....engineer...blah blah blah, you should be embarrassed by your lack of understanding and ability to root and unlock. Go read some of the dopey posts by people who can't follow instructions or put a sentence together, yet were successful! I guess what I'm saying is stfu and go away.

You can follow all of the links I posted and verify that the information I have claimed is missing, is indeed missing. I have pointed out what is missing from where and concisely explained exactly why the process for this particular phone is dangerous without said information.
Congrats on your effortless unlock and custom ROM flash. Your anecdotal success and unsubstantiated claims regarding the successes of others does not make the process objectively "easy", nor straightforward. I have flashed custom ROMs onto many devices, and this one is the most complicated, convoluted, and frustrating of them all.

Ahhh, the "YOU DIDN'T READ!!!!" mantra begins! I don't know if you're aware of this, but failure is how things are learned. It's how more cohesive, better written guides surface, and it's how people like you enjoy a successful root and custom ROM. There are lots and lots of people who have ruined phones from attempting this process. I'd be willing to bet money that the people who developed these hacks certainly went through a couple.

You know what? The people that wrote the guides did so out of the goodness of their hearts as have all of the people here that have helped others to root their phones. There's nothing like you coming in here and slapping those people in the face.
Perhaps they're not the best writers. I think it unlikely that writing is what they do for a living. But you know what? If you'd taken the time to read the entire threads, you would have seen every possible way to **** up and how to deal with it. But no. Assholes like you think there should be a one touch root because you're too ****ing lazy to learn a little bit about your phone. Sorry, bub. It didn't happen with this phone. It took almost 18 months to discover and develop the exploits that allowed us without developer editions to root our phones.
I should apologize. I should be sorry that you're too ****ing stupid to read through hundreds of posts on how to unlock a bootloader and root your phone.
Have you sent any money to the guys that developed the exploit? How much are you paying for any of what's here on this forum? STFU.

- Has anybody bothered to state that 40% of the battery charge disappears every time you run Kingoroot? Nope. Nowhere in the guides.
- Has anybody mentioned that the CPD1 VZW bootloader firmware is also locked and will not boot a ROM flagged as custom? Nope! Nowhere. You heard it here first!
- Has anyone examined the content of the BPA1-CPD1 hybrid 5.1.1 ROM to determine whether it contains OEM VZW firmware or a custom firmware revision developed by someone on this forum? No. Nobody has done that.
You don't have to "write full-time" to have good written communication skills. I could write a very respectable COMPREHENSIVE guide on the process involved, but do you know what would happen to it? The admins would never sticky it and it would get buried under a thousand other threads. Somebody decided that there can be ONLY ONE ["Official"] guide, even though the current one is a stupid, incoherent mess that's maintained by an OP who refuses to amend or add anything to it.
And lazy? At least I perused the source code before I blindly copied a script claiming to unlock my bootloader. I doubt you have the slightest clue on either how to look at it or what malicious code looks like.
Lastly and most importantly, you're a fool for being content with giving your money to a phone manufacturer that rails you in the ass for wanting more control over it. After I brought my Note 4 back from the grave, I bought a Nexus. You think donating your change to the Devs is going to fix this problem long-term when you give Samsung $800 to continue doing this to you? I don't have enough crayons to further explain to you what an idiot you are.
Ok as this really is nothing more then a rant I will close this up with a few passing thoughts.
Things like this are not meant to be done by the average guy. This is a developers site. So yes you are expected to do lots of research before you do anything.
Next. No one in their right mind uses that root process. The battery drain is it connecting to the internet and downloading what ever it is they use to root the device after then get your imei and store it.
Also lets leave the name calling for the playground or the next name that will be called is banned.
Need some 101 help and explanations. I am much more familiar with Apple and have only rooted one inexpensive Android that I learned to do from here. It was an early ZTC and although I rooted it, I did not learn that much because it was a very basic phone. Purchased a preowned HTC Desire 626S T-Mobile so it already has been updated to Marshmallow.
SPECS
HTC Desire 626S T-Mobile
Android 6.0.1. HTC Sense Version 7.0 Software 2.17.531.13
Developer options enabled with OEM unlocking and USB debugging checked. Unchecked verify apps over USB.
Have windows laptop computer 2640M processor, lots of RAM and Win 10.
1.) Can't figure out how to unlock bootloader
Went to HTC developer website. Entered in the phone - HTC Desire*. The next step says that if the software version that I have (2.17.531.13) is earlier than what is listed on their list that I have to download the RUU. So I look at the list and do not know which T-MObile entry I should be looking at. These are the entries that remotely resemble T-Mobile
TMO PL 2.15.118.2
TMO UK 2.29.110.6
TMO AT 2.29.112.6
I am in the US so I figured the UK one can be eliminated. That leaves 2 left. If it is the first one - then my version is later and I can go to step 2. If it is the third one, then I have to download the RUU.
So which one of these, TMO PL 2.15.118.2 or TMO AT 2.29.112.6 is the one I should be using?
I think I can then proceed and figure it out from there ---unless someone recommends a different way to unlock bootloader.
2.) How do I root 6.0?
Any of the instructions I have found are for Lollipop. I found one thread at Android forums (can't post thread yet) but it is titled. htc-desire-626s-rooted-how-to-ota-marshmallow-update-re-root.1055825/ but that talks about an already rooted phone.
Am I able to root?
Can someone direct me to instructions that really explain along the way so I can follow along?
If I am able to root, can someone recommend a ROM that is easy to work with and provide flashing info. My goal is to have a simple stock Android interface that I can play around with and get rid of the HTC overlay stuff.
Many MANY thanks.

Look up HTC Desire 626S XDA on google please, because there IS an actual thread on this device (and some amazing people working on it too) but its one of those devices they sorta crammed into the threads with the regular 626 -.-. I do hope I helped out as I have had this device, you need to unlock your bootloader to gain root, its just some added work via PC with CMD or terminal, for your phone to be rooted .

Yea I had it for a short time however, the Sunshine app is the best way to go in my opinion
I have the same phone.
I unlocked the boot loader and the web site told me that same BS. I put in my unlock token and they sent me an unlock code. It worked just fine.
Thanks everyone. I sold it --- lol. I'm going to look for a large screen android that I can root.Wanted a Phab 2 pro but it looks like they are discontinued.
