Unlocked bootloader question - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I am sure this is posted but I couldn't find it currently. If I only have my bootloader unlocked can I take an ota update? Only ask cuz I did unlock it and haven't gotten January security update yet.

Yes, as long as you have not modified anything in /system then you'll be able to successfully take an OTA. I have not heard of a January security update as of yet.

Thought so just making sure. And I am sure there will be so I'd rather take it before I modified anything lol

No doubt. If you are comfortable issuing adb commands, using fastboot to update is rather painless once you have everything set up. No need to wait since factory images often get posted before many receive an OTA notice.

I know how to do the adb and fastboot but not sure what I flash for the updates

Follow step 10 of Heisenberg's guide and you will be all set. The only thing you do not need to flash is userdata, as this would return you to out of the box state.

Ok haha thanks that's simple

Do you flash update or take the ota? I'm being lazy and I know they released it yesterday to flash it but I'm just waiting g for the ota. Curious if someone has gotten the ota. Thanks in advanced

Haven't gotten the OTA myself yet, usually as previously mentioned I'll just go ahead and use the factory images when available as they come out before OTAs. If your more comfortable with the OTA just wait for it . If you have any more questions let me know!

Yeah I know how and am OK with it but waiting a day before I root and flash a rom I'll wait. I know that they released the update yesterday so I'm wondering how long till they push the ota

Just received the ota if anyone cares lol

Help!! Preparing for the 2.xx.xxx.xx OTA

I am presently running stock rooted rom with Clockworkmod Recovery. The software version is 1.29.720.11. As the 2.xx.xxx.xx series is coming very soon I was wondering if I can get OTA update directly. I am aware that stock recovery is required but a noob and can't take the risk of bricking it. Can anyone link me with a proper post for the same? Or help me out with stock recovery for 1.29.720.11 and tell me how to flash it?

It might be worth checking the Q&A section, there's about one post per day asking how to return to stock and half of those are so that an OTA can be received. Your problem is not unique.
You just have to grab the stock recovery, flash it (same as you did with cwm, just a different file), fastboot oem lock, apply update, job done.

I don't think that relocking the bootloader is needed. All I'm doing is to flash the stock recovery that matches your ROM version. Relocking the bootloader is needed for RUU.
The 'stock' recovery isn't RUU-dependent - it's the same one in all RUUs

The main doubt arises here . I have the Stock recovery.img from 1.29.401.11 . Will it work with the Indian ROM 1.29.720.11?

Why don't you just wait for a ROM to be based on the new update and use Clockworkmod to flash it ? You then wouldn't have to worry about re-unlocking, re-rooting etc.

My grand grand dad used to work on the one x and he told me it will be released on the 18th of august, at 18 o'clock, 18th minute and 18th second.
It will be uploaded to 18 people only and the others will have to wait 18 years to recieve the next 18 OTA. GL

Probably not. S-OFF before you update. Any future updates will not cause S-ON. Updates will break root but from what I understand you can just install a custom recovery and flash superuser.

i would wait for the DEV's for firewater actually says it works with ours but over on the sprint side, they said it works for them

FYI
I can't speak to rooting after the fact, but I restored stock recovery, updated via Verizon, then flashed a custom recovery and superuser, and my root is working fine. S-Off was never affected.
Thanks I guess

It is not tested yet. You can test it yourself if you want but I don't recommend it. Chances are when u get the phone it will not be updated just tell the worker to not update and you should be fine. My brother recently bought his prior to the 4.3 s-off and he got his phone with 4.1 or 4.2 I'm not sure

If it comes new with 4.4.2 and of course s on, firewater won't work because it won't be able to get through the locked bootloader to modify files with the temp root method.
If it's a tmobile or att version you can unlock the bootloader via HTC dev and then firewater will work to get you s off since you won't need the temp root method.

Software update SWV10q changelog

Anyone have any idea what this update brings to the phone? It was pushed to my phone this morning and I dont know if i should update it or not. I highly doubt that it is lollipop however i want to know if it is safe to install the OTA and not lose functionality of exposed, rooted permissions, etc...
i don't think it's android L. see changelog here.

It's the for inflight text.
Did you get a notification on your phone about update or an announcement on t mobile's website? I haven't seen any posts about update nor customer service has any knowledge of it.
I just got an OTA for the update. you can always use LG's update tool to upgrade your software version. I was actually presented with another update this morning. I have no idea what it is. it does however bring the software from swv10q to KVT49L. It is still android 4.4.2 FYI
Is the update rootable (required for SD fix)?
Is there anyway to force this update? I'm on 10M stock
I havent gotten the notice and really am in no hurry to hook it up to the pc or force update right now. Has anyone actually updated to this and aside from the minor changelog were there any changes to the bootloader or anything?

purpledrake is blocked.. not sure if root will stick thru OTA or if manual updating will be required.
bootloader has been updated with the same changes the other G3 "pre-L" updates had (nothing noticeable to end users).
downgrading is NOT blocked or anything.
oh and to OP and others.. it's 10R.. not 10Q

So if stump was blocked through last update a drake is blocked now what are the options to regain root? By bootloader was updated does that mean it is now locked and will require bump?

Taking the OTA while already being rooted may allow root to stick through the update process... I cannot confirm that yet and we will need to wait for other users to report back. Your other options are not taking the OTA at all and instead using TWRP to manually update to 10R partition by partition (flashing modem, boot and system).. OR downgrading back to 10C/10M and continue using that. There most likely will not be an updated LG root in the immediate future... no reason to waste a bug when downgrading is still possible... every single G3 and other flagship LG device has root with some firmware version. Perhaps we'll see a new android-wide 4.4.x bug that would work for all.
As for bootloader... no we don't need bump.. we have an unlocked device. Update is not related to a lock.

not that I know of. easiest way will be to just dump the 10R kdz when it comes out and flash the partitions manually in TWRP. I'll probably make a secure flashable bootloader update zip.. and I'll have have the boot, modem and all the other partitions (minus system), as always, up on my codefire folder. Someone else will have to upload/mirror system for the masses.

Can't install March security update

So I bought my Google Pixel XL few days ago from eBay. The phone was used by the seller only for few days. Everything works fine except for the system update.
I'm actually able to download the 2017-03 security patch, but once the installation starts it fails in step 1 and I get the error message in the screenshot.
Did anybody experience a similar problem? Do you think I must return the phone?
Only reason I can think of that will bork an update is if one or more of the core apps are deleted or frozen. You verified you're all stock correct?

The seller may have had it rooted. And he didn't install factory firmware, before he sold it to u. Maybe he did an unroot root in SuperSU and that is not a sure thing. Just a guess. I would go to Google site and fastboot newest factory image.
Edit. Is the bootloader unlocked?
Check in your about phone section and see what version, kernel, and baseband your on. Or screenshot it and post it here

Is it a Google version if it is I would unlock it and flash the new factory image. If it's not I would prob try to get money back. I'm not sure if you can flash factory image with locked bootloader. I think you can go ahead but not backwards. You will have to make sure.
You can use adb to sideload the signed ota zip in stock recovery with a locked bl.
You shouldn't have to do any of that if it's stock unrooted. But unfortunately, you don't know what the previous owner may have done.
Adb sideload might be your only choice to truly get back to stock.

I think this is the best place to start. Here are some directions for the OP.
Get the fastboot adb tools from google. Unzip them onto your computer's desktop.

You should use the full flashable image and not the OTA to return to stock from this page:

Using the specific image 7.1.1, second from bottom of Pixel XL seection.
Ok thanks a lot guys, I'll flash it once I get home.
Just to be sure, this won't void the warranty right ? because I checked with Google and the phone is still under warranty.
