Probably not. S-OFF before you update. Any future updates will not cause S-ON. Updates will break root but from what I understand you can just install a custom recovery and flash superuser.

i would wait for the DEV's for firewater actually says it works with ours but over on the sprint side, they said it works for them

FYI
I can't speak to rooting after the fact, but I restored stock recovery, updated via Verizon, then flashed a custom recovery and superuser, and my root is working fine. S-Off was never affected.
Thanks I guess

It is not tested yet. You can test it yourself if you want but I don't recommend it. Chances are when u get the phone it will not be updated just tell the worker to not update and you should be fine. My brother recently bought his prior to the 4.3 s-off and he got his phone with 4.1 or 4.2 I'm not sure

If it comes new with 4.4.2 and of course s on, firewater won't work because it won't be able to get through the locked bootloader to modify files with the temp root method.
If it's a tmobile or att version you can unlock the bootloader via HTC dev and then firewater will work to get you s off since you won't need the temp root method.

Hey guys I just released today that my phone had the OTA update and i'm on Three in UK.
Anyhow I'm really wondering how I can update it with my rooted phone i'm pretty sure it will cause problems. What is the best way to update to the latest software with a rooted phone?
Do I have to unroot it?
Do I have to relock bootloader?
I'd like some clarification!!
Thanks a lot.
i just done the same on my three Uk version, i had to uninstall cwm install original recovery lock the boot back and download update and install,
priesl forpage
I swear you only had to relock the bootloader.
well i guess i done all this for nothing as i just come of the phone to three, i got the black version of htc one x, i found screen flickering so they going to send me the new one , well i thought ill go for the white one lets hope the new phone is ok

I asked in another thread

Looks like you havn't got to relock bootloader, just unroot, flash stock recovery (if on a custom recovery) then update
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
I may be wrong but I though it still updated if on stock, you just lose root so you need to root it again afterwards. That's from past experience with Samsung phones, but thought it'd might be similar on other phones which is why I added my input.
Ota updates check system files before it reports if an update is available (does it not?), if it reports an update it must be fine IMO.

If it works the same way as the previous OTA, you just flash supersu.zip in recovery after taking the update and you have root again. I haven't personally tried it yet so hopefully someone else can chime in to confirm that's how it would work.
EDIT: just tried this and that's exactly how it works. If you're s-off and take the OTA, just flash a custom recovery afterwards, then flash superuser.zip and you'll have root access.

Or just flash a ROM based on the new OTA, once us DEVs get the ROMs updated.
unless you want to stay on stock with root.
then you are perfect.

it is confirmed though that if you have S-OFF you can take the OTA and keep S-OFF?
Wonder why the delay on the OTA then.
also wonder why they'd give us this useless update, sure Android 4.3 is great and all, but we are running HTC Sense UI...
Why the hell didn't HTC update THEIR Sense UI!?
Sense 5.0 sucks compared to 5.5
HTC actually finally listened to the users on Sense 5.5 and added in great features including blinkfeed on/off toggle, No Do Not Disturb Mode (really the ONLY thing I wanted outta this update)
and no option to re-order the quick setting tiles on stock.
Lyapota did a great job giving us the re-order MOD, but it's just upsetting to me after the wait, really the only new feature I've found is the opportunity to separate ringtone and notification volumes.

I just did this myself. When I got my One a couple of weeks ago I went from stock out of the box to unlocked, S-OFF, and rooted with rumrunner. I just restored the stock recovery through adb, reinstalled the few bloatware apps I'd uninstalled with Titanium, and let the OTA run. After that I reflashed my custom recovery, and with that I then flashed supersu.zip. I'm now updated through the OTA and still unlocked, S-OFF, and rooted.
I updated to Kit Kat this morning. What are the necessary steps for me to gain root? I haven't rooted a phone since my Droid X, so I might be out of the loop on some things. Thanks for any help!!!
So why would you take the update before asking this
Sent from my HTC One VZW using Tapatalk 4
You can still root it. If you go into RUU mode, flash one of the older system RUU's, then get s-off before updating. You pretty much gave yourself a **** ton more steps to do it, but yes, you can.
This link has the info to flash back to an older version - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2475216&highlight=s-on
You won't need the s-on / lock part of that, but you will probably need to flash one of those old system images, then use rumrunner to get s-off and unlocked, then you can update to 4.4, then flash a recovery.
Use firewater-soff.com. Use the temp root method.

So is it possible to take my Verizon HTC One M7 running 4.4.2 KitKat, HBOOT-1.56.000, S-ON to JellyBean 4.3?
If you need any other information, I will try my best to find it and provide it.

So from your custom recovery, you flashed a rom, you did a full wipe beforehand correct? As long as you have an unlocked bootloader (says unlocked at top of bootloader screen), you shouldn't have any issues flashing a rom.

Can you confirm if /data/preload is empty after the htc unlock?
Barking up the wrong tree with the library. The same vulnerability exists (from what I have seen) but needs to be exploited in a different route than how the current version of weaksauce is doing it. I didn't build it for compatibility, i built it for easy of testing, as I do not have the device myself.
Dump system, upload it somewhere for me, no promises as I normally don't like to do roots for unlockable phones, but I am interested in finishing the exploit (the one I released is not "finished", as I didn't have the device when I wrote it, just the firmware).

Can't find anything that has an export for: "CopyFileCtl" which means no weaksauce on this phone. It looks like HTC Dev Unlock works fine, and so does the firewater s-off but you can't do it without flashing a recovery yet.

Did you lose the preload apps from /data/preload ?
I want to get a backup of those before I HTC Dev unlock if possible. I'm looking at the libs in system to see if I can find another one that would work for weaksauce. (I.E. it is just renamed and has the same exports)
