Facebook connection and sync with contacts - One (M9) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Greetings people!
First I would like to express to everyone my best wishes for the upcoming new year and then ask for your help with a problem I encountered.
It seems that my M9 doesn't give me the option to connect a facebook account to each of my contacts.
In a contact I have telephone number and mail and it also allows me to add twitter account and LinkedIn and LinkedIn for sense but not the facebook profile of the contact(person).
I tried all I could think of with no results.
Coming from the M7 I remember this was available and it also synced with facebook account of the contact.
I would be grateful if someone would enlighten me on how to "fix" this
Sent from my HTC One M9 using XDA Free mobile app

It's caused by a recent change FB updated in his app. Facebook simply no longer supports the contact sync for Android phone with Android 5.1.1 later releases.
On the Facebook community forum, as far as I read, they stated: “Unfortunately, this feature is no longer available. If you would like to provide feedback to the product team about this, please visit our Help Center.”

Looks like this app fixes the "issue" :

Yes it does, if one only wants the pictures. It doesn't help to sync the mobile numbers - if a user has one in his FB account - so this feature is definitely lost

HTC Sense Twitter not accepting login

Hi,I discovered two hours ago that my twitter account associated with the HTC Sense wasn't syncing at all,a message about server not responding was displayed. All other accounts like google, facebook, flickr all seem to be ok. So,I decided to remove the twitter account from "Account&Sync" and recreate it with the same username and password but kept getting "invalid username and password" everytime.I signed in via web browser, the loving details were accepted. Does anyone have this same issue?

I can confirm I'm having this EXACT same issue! It's just started happening! Thank goodness I'm not alone, for a second there I thought my phone was f*cked.
Downloaded official Twitter from the marketplace and that's working. Maybe Twitter has decided to block Peep for some reason?
Glad you mentioned this, I've flashed a few roms today and wiped my phone and changed my password - all because I couldn't log into Twitter with HTC Sense and like jedininja666 I thought my phone was broken! I'm getting a bit annoyed now! First the market stops working (download unsuccessful most of the time) and now this...
This is due to twitter changing thier authentication. Peep must used the old auth not the new one.
Read aboout it a few mins ago Twitter - Login Errors Your going to have to wait for HTC to update Peep.

No problem here, I get twits thru FriendsStream widget and Peep without problem. No login errors. Using NexTSense v7.0.
I freakin' hate the Twitter Dev's for this. I'm sure it will be a while before HTC figures this out.
same problem
everything worked fine till yesterday. I did factory reset and now i am unable to log in to peep. Official client works fine, i can login through opera mobile, mobile web browser. But i want Friend Stream!
I use the official app as Peep is rubbish!!
No comments from HTC's official twitter account about this despite much angst from users.
The changes to the twitter authentication method have been public knowledge for nearly a year now and should have been dealt with before now... after all social integration is a key part of the Sense sales pitch...
The official twitter app is a poor substitute in my eyes...

How is it poor? Peep is a terrible app, HTC should've written the official app into 2.2 and done away with Peep altogether IMO. Having said that, I don't use FriendStream as I prefer to use the individual apps/widgets
+1..so terrible..twitter dev should inform HTC first before they made changes..now we users have to suffer for waiting the update from HTC!!

How is Peep terrible? Well, apart from not support OAuth!
I prefer Peep too - mostly because of the widget. I've installed the official Twitter app now as Peep isn't working, but I still prefer Peep.
I rather like Touiteur too, but you only get the widgets with the paid version, and since Peep is fine for me and free, I'd rather use that.

Would it be correct to assume that you only experience this problem if you remove and readd your account, or if you are setting up a new rom ? Meaning, that until you don't log out, it stays in ???

I found that whilst I could still update Twitter via Peep, I couldn't get any updates, rendering it rather useless.

Around this time last year I was building Twitter integration into a website for client using ASP.NET and even then the Twitter developer site urged using oAuth instead of basic authentication. HTC obviously thought they wouldn't disable basic auth!

I Can't Add Facebook as an Account, Help

When I go into Accounts & Sync in the settings menu and try to add Facebook as an account, it doesn't work. I click to add facebook but it just returns me to the settings and never adds it. It works perfect for Twitter, LinkedIn, and other apps as well. Anyone else having this happen too? I've tried uninstalling and clearing all data, didn't work.

Same here. Don't think its setup for ICS yet
Facebook has not made an app that actually works with Android. Many companies, like HTC, have made apps for that by themselves. Facebook and Google are not on friendly terms when it comes to sharing contacts data, so this might not change anytime soon.
Doesn't that make the People Hub pointless then? All of my "real" friends are on Facebook, not Google+, Twitter, or LinkedIn so it doesn't sync any real info or high def pictures.

That's not entirely true. Facebook sync used to work with all Nexus devices but Google themselves pulled the sync due to them not allowing contacts to also be exported to Android devices. From Google:
http://techcrunch.com/2011/02/22/google-android-facebook-contacts/
“We believe it is very important that users are able to control their data. So in the over-the-air update for Nexus S, we have a small change to how Facebook contacts appear on the device. For Nexus S users who downloaded the Facebook app from Android Market, Facebook contacts will no longer appear to be integrated with the Android Contacts app. Since Facebook contacts cannot be exported from the device, the appearance of integration created a false sense of data portability. Facebook contact data will continue to appear within the Facebook app. Like all developers on Android, Facebook is free to use the Android contacts API to truly integrate contacts on the device, which would allow users to have more control over their data. We are removing the special-case handling of Facebook contacts on Nexus S and future lead devices. We continue to believe that reciprocity (the expectation that if information can be imported into a service it should be able to be exported) is an important step toward creating a world of true data liberation — and encourage other websites and app developers to allow users to export their contacts as well.”
They only stopped this feature on the Nexus line of phones and the reason Facebook sync still doesn't work is because Facebook has not made the necessary change yet that Twitter and the like have. Google however doesn't stop other OEMs from allowing Facebook to sync contacts though - I wish they would to light the fire under their ***** so I could get my contact photos back, but what can you do? They hate each other right now.

You could always start spamming Facebook to allow contact export so Google will let them sync again. I doubt they'll do it though.
The fact that any OEM can make this feature work again no matter what Google does kind of sucks when you only buy Nexus phones. I've gotten used to it not being there and I take a random candid picture of everyone I add to my contacts list now which works better in some situations since some of those FB profile pics don't give you any idea who the person actually is.

No they did not. The way Facebook synced before was a hack, they did not use Android contacts API the way others do and the way it is meant to. Google removed the hack.
Facebook does not want to share contact information with Android so that user 'owns' their data. They can always build their app the right way. Zuckerberg & Co just don't want to.

because it is called the People application, not the Facebook application.
Not everyone uses Facebook, as apathetically ubiquitous it may appear to be. Some people use Twitter. Some people use Google+. Either way, the point of it is that it links with multiple social networks. The Facebook application does not work properly with Android 4.0, and even if/when it does it is unlikely that Facebook will be allowed API access to the People application due to the fact that they do not make it simple to get at your contacts data. It's your prerogative if you want to blame Google or Facebook there, but the point I'm making is that the People application obviously has a point, since Facebook isn't the be-all-and-end-all of social networking.
So if i understand this right.
Google wont let facebook info sync. Because facebook wont let it fully sync and be backed up to gmail etc?
And this would mean all your friends facebook info would then be your property and not theirs (facebooks).

Google cannot stop anyone from syncing and using the API, this is open software. Facebook simply does not wish to implement that feature, since all contact data synced is accessible by other applications. The other thing is that Facebook does not wish to share friends email addresses.
It is entirely about Facebook not allowing user to do whatever they want with data shared with them by friends.
Basically, Facebook is afraid that if they allow people to export contact data, it will be very easy for everyone to just move all their friends to a new social network. Since Facebook only has one way of making money it's understandable that they want to make it as hard for us as possible to do that.
From Google's point of view, it's very exploitative of Facebook to expect to get special treatment on Android phones even though they refuse to play ball with Google, hence why their special privilege has now been removed.
Whose ever fault you think this is, it's us consumers who are made to suffer. -.-

Not backed up to GMail but backed up to the phone. If you delete your FB account and I only had you as a FB contact then you would completely disappear from my contact list, or if something happened and FB went down for a few hours or a few days I wouldn't be able to contact anyone who was synced only through FB. Most people only join existing contacts so they only suffer from not having the photo and status updates synced, but not allowing export could be much more problematic. It's not that it's your property, it's information you have access to that you have been given approval by those you have friended to have therefore you could just use what FB gives you and manually enter the contact yourself if you wanted to. Google is basically saying if that's the case you should be given the option to automatically export that entire list to your phone instead of having to manually enter all the information that FB is supplying you with.
This frustrates me also.. ever since they updted my nexus s and removed it. Its the only thing i will miss from htc sense. I know use contapps to sync facebook and its associatd contact photos

[Q] People app missing all facebook contacts

Hello, how are you?
I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus GSM stock (yakuj) with Android 4.0.4 and Facebook app 1.9.0.
I added my facebook account and have the facebook app installed. I also checked for syncing contacts under Settings-> account & sync.
However, none of my facebook contacts show up at People app.
I tried deleting the account and re-adding it but I still have nothing.
I also tried to re-install facebook app, and still nothing.
Besides, I also tried to show only the facebook contacts changing the settings at People app->contacts to display->customize, but It didn't work either.
Furthermore, I tried to follow the steps on the link bellow, and It didn't work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928393
Please, Does someone have any clue of what can be happening?
I can't figure out why my facebook contacts don't shows at People app.
I appreciate any help you can give me,
Roger

Native Facebook contact syncing has been left out of Android since Gingerbread 2.3.4!
Roman from AOKP made a "fix" to get Facebook contacts to sync but ...
"Unfortunately, the "fix" breaks Picasa upload functionality and exposes all of your contact data insecurely. Facebook and Twitter need to update their applications to use the correct API introduced in IceCream Sandwich." - Peter Alfonso
This is why some dev's like Pete and Team Douche (Cyanogenmod) have not incorporated this "fix".
If you want your Facebook Contacts synced I would suggest buying HaxSync from the Play Store! That's what I did ... Cheers
Here is your solution: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mots.haxsync&hl=en
It's not free, but it's well worth it. Works flawlessly and is under constant development.

Hello,

Is HaxSync app the only workaround for this issue?
BTW, Is this an issue with Android 4.0.4, or Is this an issue of facebook app?
I mean, In order to fix this issue, Is the facebook app the one needed to be fixed(updated to use ICS API)?or Will we have to wait for a fix in the next ICS OTA?

I wouldn't think Facebook will correct this issue if for nothing else other than spite. Your best option is i believe HaxSync its only 99 cents (less than you pay for a coffee) and it securely syncs your contacts, calender events including birthdays and downloads hi-res images of your contacts too. It adds more functionality than the old native sync.

Again, this is a facebook issue. Your easiest solution is to pony up 99 cents as I originally recommended, it'll give you everything you want and then some, I assure you.
Yes the other solution works, but it comes with other issues and requires a bit more effort. You can decide what's more worthwhile to you - spend the time and effort for a broken solution or spend 99 cents to get everything you need easily.

yes basically its the facebook app because its not doing it right ... there was some sort of back story there about fb not wanting to work with google on the issue because fb wanted to take all of the google (gmail) contacts information or something like that.
I think the facebook sync solution you have found there is how Roman from AOKP came up with the "fix" or workaround. That information is more for developers than end users like yourself and obviously is not an easy solution. Again this is not secure syncing either which is why a few respected developers refuse to implement it.
imo HaxSync is the way to go ... fb contacts, hi res images with time line and calendar sync so it offers more than the "fix"

I'm new to HTC and Sense as I got my first HTC only 14 days ago.I got issue with contacts sync with applications like Whatsapp and Viber. They don't read Facebook contacts phone numbers and don't add them into my friend list in these applications.I used to have Nexus S first with gingerbread than with ICS and in GB all worked perfectly.I tried to search XDA but I found some issues related to Sense 3.6 and other type of phones, but nothing about Sense 4.0 or HOX.Please could you help me out somehow? Thanks a lot in advance for answers.

I don't understand what you need. You want Viber/whatsapp to sync with Facebook contacts? If this is the case check under sync to make sure you have allowed FB contact sync. I think there is also an option somewhere in the FB app itself but I could be wrong.

Sorry if I didn't describe it right, but I mean these applications adds friends just from my Google contacts but not the Facebook contacts. And I have everything in sync allowed but it doesn't work.
Viber
Hi,
This is a member of the Viber R&D Team!
This option is not available through Viber, if your device contact list is synced with your FB account it will sync also to Viber.
If you have any question about Viber - please feel free to ask.
Thank you,
Viber Team

Hello, great to see that you are also on this forum and taking care of Viber users However,I still have a problem with this.I used to have gingerbread and there it worked perfectly but now I can't make it work.Everything is synced but Viber reads just my gmail contacts.
i read that a while ago, that facebook were closing access to their contact list, as in other apps couldn't read it, or something along those lines, or maybe it was that it couldn't be edited or something but it was a silly idea and nobody liked it lol.

better explained there, you can't export them, they're stored in the cloud rather than on your device itself etc, i think this is the reason you can't use them in other apps.

I know that this happened with releasing of ICS and the possibility to sync contacts inside the Facebook app was disabled. But I am able to sync all contacts inside the FB app and all the contacts are visible in People app.

yeah some apps can read the facebook contacts, ie htc sense - but the difference is that facebook doesn't use the android contacts api, so other apps that would normally read the contacts via the android api, can't actually see the facebook contacts, because technically they aren't part of the 'android contacts' (even though you as the user see them within the contacts/people app)

Thank you very much, now I understand.
@strukef -
For more questions/doubts about Viber, please feel free to let us know.
Also, know that a new version of Viber, 2.2, is coming to Market soon, and will contain many improvements (including synchronization with the native contact list of ICS - but again, not the Facebook contacts).

Anybody else think that one of the new features is Viber crashing whenever signal is lost/regained?
I had the same problem with Whatsapp. Facebook Contacts snyced with HTC Facebook are blocked. So 3rd Party apps cant use them. But you can use Facebook Unlocker. The app isnt longer in the market but i will share it via dropbox.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/fmsk82tfietqj88/Photo_Unlocker.apk
Attention: You need a rooted device!
When you have unlocked your contacts, you will see also the FB pics in Whatsapp etc.

Hi,
Can you please elaborate on the problem?
Have you made sure that the crash is linked to the signal being lost? And are you referring to 3G or WiFi signal?

I haven't been able to confirm it, I'm afraid, it's kind of a feeling, it's usually crashed when I switch the screen on. It happens multiple times a day. I've cleared data and reinstalled it, but no joy.
Does it use C2DM or GCM?

Viber uses C2DM in order to stay available.
Have you tested the brand new 2.2.2 update?
If the problem still persists with 2.2.2, please do let me know, and I'll redirect you to our Support Team.

I installed 2.2.2 and a few minutes later it crashed, but it has been fine since. I think it's fixed.
It's nice to hear that it works fine now
If the problem persists, please don't hesitate to let me know.

[Q] Facebook contact sync through Facebook Home app?

Am about to pick up a used GNex and am wondering if the Facebook Home app is of any help towards getting contact pics & syncing on Nexus devices...never mind that it seems to be a crap launcher, etc., has anyone had a look at that possibility?
I don't have an Android phone for a few days to try this out, so if anyone is willing to give it a shot, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks in advance!

No, you can use haxsync but is paid
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Facebook home isn't available on the gnex.
I can sideload the apk (with a bit of tinkering) according to here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2232198&page=5
A shame it doesn't work for this purpose, though...I've read about haxsync and it's not a problem that it costs a buck, but it just looks unclean, unofficial, etc. I would like to sync between Facebook and Google via at least Facebook if Google is being a douche, not some 3rd party.
I guess the only way this would be resolved officially is if Facebook came out with a People app replacement...which it might yet do, but so far no go.
Thanks!
I have used haxsync for 2 yrs an recommend it, I only got it to sync Facebook contact photos to native phone app contacts originally.
Most likely I will also use either it or this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.contapps.android - looks very decent as a full People+Dialer replacement app

Google is not being a douche here, Android has an open API allowing any app developer to sync stuff with contacts. Facebook just never updated their horribly outdated app to take advantage of this.(the API was released 2 Years ago)
So no it would not require facebook to release a people app but simply to update their existing app.
This is exactly what the third party apps does, and they work fine BTW. Since they run entirely in the background it doesn't matter that they look unofficial, I never see the app itself. So there is no need to use a replacement for the people app.
Never did understand why more didn't follow HTC's contact sync set up. So simple, intuitive and seamless.
Hey, we see you have 4 John Smiths.. under FB, Twitter, LinkedIn, and your main contacts.. shall we merge? Voila, done. And you get to use their FB photo as the default.
Why they wouldn't make contact integration easier is beyond me..

It's simple, just because facebook is large doesn't mean they get preferential treatment(like on ios, where only twitter and facebook is integrated). On android any app can do this(facebook included), but it is required for the app itself to do the sync of the contacts.

But why not allow that as an option at the Android OS level to allow permission is what I don't get. The FB android app also hasn't synced my contacts in forever (to include photo).

Please read my previous post! It is allowed... Any developer can add sync options(this is exactly what the thirdparties like haxsync does). The reason your facebook app sync doesn't work is, that they hacked in a solution that worked on 2.2 and earlier versions of android, but as the official api was introduced, and facebook was breaking the rules, this exploit was removed, and facebook just hasn't updated to use the official api.
read about the official api here: http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/providers/contacts-provider.html
What HTC and others does is, that they either hack in the old exploit allowing the facebook app to sync again or they simply write their own app which uses the official api to sync fb contacts and pics.(this is identical to downloading an app like haxsync).
I ended up installing Contacts+ and am quite happy with it...
