[Q] Facebook contacts phone numbers sync with applications like Whatsapp and Viber - HTC One X

Hello all,
I'm new to HTC and Sense as I got my first HTC only 14 days ago.I got issue with contacts sync with applications like Whatsapp and Viber. They don't read Facebook contacts phone numbers and don't add them into my friend list in these applications.I used to have Nexus S first with gingerbread than with ICS and in GB all worked perfectly.I tried to search XDA but I found some issues related to Sense 3.6 and other type of phones, but nothing about Sense 4.0 or HOX.Please could you help me out somehow? Thanks a lot in advance for answers.

I don't understand what you need. You want Viber/whatsapp to sync with Facebook contacts? If this is the case check under sync to make sure you have allowed FB contact sync. I think there is also an option somewhere in the FB app itself but I could be wrong.

Sorry if I didn't describe it right, but I mean these applications adds friends just from my Google contacts but not the Facebook contacts. And I have everything in sync allowed but it doesn't work.

Viber
Hi,
This is a member of the Viber R&D Team!
This option is not available through Viber, if your device contact list is synced with your FB account it will sync also to Viber.
If you have any question about Viber - please feel free to ask.
Thank you,
Viber Team

Hello, great to see that you are also on this forum and taking care of Viber users However,I still have a problem with this.I used to have gingerbread and there it worked perfectly but now I can't make it work.Everything is synced but Viber reads just my gmail contacts.

i read that a while ago, that facebook were closing access to their contact list, as in other apps couldn't read it, or something along those lines, or maybe it was that it couldn't be edited or something but it was a silly idea and nobody liked it lol.
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/22/google-disables-contact-sync-in-facebook-for-android-only-nexus/
better explained there, you can't export them, they're stored in the cloud rather than on your device itself etc, i think this is the reason you can't use them in other apps.

I know that this happened with releasing of ICS and the possibility to sync contacts inside the Facebook app was disabled. But I am able to sync all contacts inside the FB app and all the contacts are visible in People app.

yeah some apps can read the facebook contacts, ie htc sense - but the difference is that facebook doesn't use the android contacts api, so other apps that would normally read the contacts via the android api, can't actually see the facebook contacts, because technically they aren't part of the 'android contacts' (even though you as the user see them within the contacts/people app)

For more questions/doubts about Viber, please feel free to let us know.
Also, know that a new version of Viber, 2.2, is coming to Market soon, and will contain many improvements (including synchronization with the native contact list of ICS - but again, not the Facebook contacts).

Anybody else think that one of the new features is Viber crashing whenever signal is lost/regained?

I had the same problem with Whatsapp. Facebook Contacts snyced with HTC Facebook are blocked. So 3rd Party apps cant use them. But you can use Facebook Unlocker. The app isnt longer in the market but i will share it via dropbox.
https://www.dropbox.com/s/fmsk82tfietqj88/Photo_Unlocker.apk
Attention: You need a rooted device!
When you have unlocked your contacts, you will see also the FB pics in Whatsapp etc.

Hi,
Can you please elaborate on the problem?
Have you made sure that the crash is linked to the signal being lost? And are you referring to 3G or WiFi signal?

I haven't been able to confirm it, I'm afraid, it's kind of a feeling, it's usually crashed when I switch the screen on. It happens multiple times a day. I've cleared data and reinstalled it, but no joy.
Does it use C2DM or GCM?

Have you tested the brand new 2.2.2 update?
If the problem still persists with 2.2.2, please do let me know, and I'll redirect you to our Support Team.

[Q] Sense synced Facebook contacts despite me asking nicely not to :/

I may flash a custom Gingerbread ROM a few months down the road but I'm staying stock until the hardware checks out. The only thing I don't like about Sense is it's gone and added a ton of Facebook friends with phone numbers to my contact list and I really don't want them. Is there a way to remove them? I can't seem to find a simple solution.
Thanks in advance.

I just double checked, contacts aren't being synced for Android Facebook or Sense Facebook. When I go into the contacts app (I think it's called People) I have set my 70 contacts from Facebook for Sense to not be viewed, but they still appear in the list of people to call or send messages to. I don't care if they're there, but at the least I don't want to see them. I have them hidden in contacts but they appear in Handcent and Phone anyway.
Did you ever in the past link up FB contacts to an android phone? In that case I believe it also syncs up with Google's contacts in the cloud...but I may be mistaken
Yeah this got posted a while back, I know what you mean it's annoying. It meant my phone tried to sync a ton of stuff I didn't want to my car stereo unit via Bluetooth.
Someone did post up a solution, try a search for Facebook and contacts.

I Can't Add Facebook as an Account, Help

When I go into Accounts & Sync in the settings menu and try to add Facebook as an account, it doesn't work. I click to add facebook but it just returns me to the settings and never adds it. It works perfect for Twitter, LinkedIn, and other apps as well. Anyone else having this happen too? I've tried uninstalling and clearing all data, didn't work.

Same here. Don't think its setup for ICS yet
Facebook has not made an app that actually works with Android. Many companies, like HTC, have made apps for that by themselves. Facebook and Google are not on friendly terms when it comes to sharing contacts data, so this might not change anytime soon.
Doesn't that make the People Hub pointless then? All of my "real" friends are on Facebook, not Google+, Twitter, or LinkedIn so it doesn't sync any real info or high def pictures.

That's not entirely true. Facebook sync used to work with all Nexus devices but Google themselves pulled the sync due to them not allowing contacts to also be exported to Android devices. From Google:
http://techcrunch.com/2011/02/22/google-android-facebook-contacts/
“We believe it is very important that users are able to control their data. So in the over-the-air update for Nexus S, we have a small change to how Facebook contacts appear on the device. For Nexus S users who downloaded the Facebook app from Android Market, Facebook contacts will no longer appear to be integrated with the Android Contacts app. Since Facebook contacts cannot be exported from the device, the appearance of integration created a false sense of data portability. Facebook contact data will continue to appear within the Facebook app. Like all developers on Android, Facebook is free to use the Android contacts API to truly integrate contacts on the device, which would allow users to have more control over their data. We are removing the special-case handling of Facebook contacts on Nexus S and future lead devices. We continue to believe that reciprocity (the expectation that if information can be imported into a service it should be able to be exported) is an important step toward creating a world of true data liberation — and encourage other websites and app developers to allow users to export their contacts as well.”
They only stopped this feature on the Nexus line of phones and the reason Facebook sync still doesn't work is because Facebook has not made the necessary change yet that Twitter and the like have. Google however doesn't stop other OEMs from allowing Facebook to sync contacts though - I wish they would to light the fire under their ***** so I could get my contact photos back, but what can you do? They hate each other right now.

You could always start spamming Facebook to allow contact export so Google will let them sync again. I doubt they'll do it though.
The fact that any OEM can make this feature work again no matter what Google does kind of sucks when you only buy Nexus phones. I've gotten used to it not being there and I take a random candid picture of everyone I add to my contacts list now which works better in some situations since some of those FB profile pics don't give you any idea who the person actually is.

No they did not. The way Facebook synced before was a hack, they did not use Android contacts API the way others do and the way it is meant to. Google removed the hack.
Facebook does not want to share contact information with Android so that user 'owns' their data. They can always build their app the right way. Zuckerberg & Co just don't want to.

because it is called the People application, not the Facebook application.
Not everyone uses Facebook, as apathetically ubiquitous it may appear to be. Some people use Twitter. Some people use Google+. Either way, the point of it is that it links with multiple social networks. The Facebook application does not work properly with Android 4.0, and even if/when it does it is unlikely that Facebook will be allowed API access to the People application due to the fact that they do not make it simple to get at your contacts data. It's your prerogative if you want to blame Google or Facebook there, but the point I'm making is that the People application obviously has a point, since Facebook isn't the be-all-and-end-all of social networking.
So if i understand this right.
Google wont let facebook info sync. Because facebook wont let it fully sync and be backed up to gmail etc?
And this would mean all your friends facebook info would then be your property and not theirs (facebooks).

Google cannot stop anyone from syncing and using the API, this is open software. Facebook simply does not wish to implement that feature, since all contact data synced is accessible by other applications. The other thing is that Facebook does not wish to share friends email addresses.
It is entirely about Facebook not allowing user to do whatever they want with data shared with them by friends.
Basically, Facebook is afraid that if they allow people to export contact data, it will be very easy for everyone to just move all their friends to a new social network. Since Facebook only has one way of making money it's understandable that they want to make it as hard for us as possible to do that.
From Google's point of view, it's very exploitative of Facebook to expect to get special treatment on Android phones even though they refuse to play ball with Google, hence why their special privilege has now been removed.
Whose ever fault you think this is, it's us consumers who are made to suffer. -.-

Not backed up to GMail but backed up to the phone. If you delete your FB account and I only had you as a FB contact then you would completely disappear from my contact list, or if something happened and FB went down for a few hours or a few days I wouldn't be able to contact anyone who was synced only through FB. Most people only join existing contacts so they only suffer from not having the photo and status updates synced, but not allowing export could be much more problematic. It's not that it's your property, it's information you have access to that you have been given approval by those you have friended to have therefore you could just use what FB gives you and manually enter the contact yourself if you wanted to. Google is basically saying if that's the case you should be given the option to automatically export that entire list to your phone instead of having to manually enter all the information that FB is supplying you with.
This frustrates me also.. ever since they updted my nexus s and removed it. Its the only thing i will miss from htc sense. I know use contapps to sync facebook and its associatd contact photos

Add Facebook Account

Trying to add a Facebook account to sync my info with my contacts. Why I go to add the account, the screen just blinks and takes me back to the accounts screen. It wont let me add it. I did it once when the Facebook app asked me if I wanted to, but cannot figure out how to get that option again on the facebook app.
I just rooted my phone and did not apply a custom rom or anything.
You can't add a Facebook account through accounts and sync.. it isn't built in unless you install a rom that has it enabled.

Google has removed facebook sync so the only way to get it back is through a custom rom now.
Actually you don't have to change the ROM. Instead you can just use this app to sync your facebook contacts. Found it a couple of days ago and have been using it without any problems. Works like a charms for me. The only downside: You don't get the facebook icon but instead the icon of the app.

I agree, I've been using HaxSync for a while now and love it. It does have a few little quirks with name matching, but it's easy enough to remedy by linking the contact to the correct account in Facebook, plus the dev seems to work pretty quickly on updates and bug fixes.
Here's a question which I think is on point with the thread.
I have a custom ROM on my GNEX which has Facebook Sync enabled (Winner00 ROM). But it doesn't seem to sync everyone, and certainly not with high resolution images. I also installed the Facebook sync app that so many have suggested, but that also doesn't sync everyone, nor does it sync high res images.
In total, only about 20 or so of my phone contacts are synced with their FB pictures.
Anyone know how to better tweak this? Or, what I'm doing wrong??
Thanks!

I've not used a ROM that has Facebook syncing enabled, but I'm guessing it's the same situation as with HaxSync. My guess is that the name of the contact in your phone is different somehow than their name on Facebook so this is how you join them so the pics sync:
1. Open the People app and find the contact you want to join
2. Opent the contact then tap Menu>Edit
3. Then tap Menu>Join
4. Match the person to their Facebook name and select it
5. Tap done
The contact will now be joined to their facebook picture and the picture will sync.
As I said, I'm not positive that this is the same with Facebook syncing as all I have used is HaxSync but I'm guessing it's the same.
Thanks for the suggestion.

[Q] Facebok contacts sync

Hey all;
I just got my Galexy Nexus 2 days ago and love it so far. I just have 1 problem so far. I can not get my Facebook to sync with my contacts. I logged into Facebook and it doesn't even give me the option to set up sync. I also tried to go into accounts and add it in there. It will not add. I have cleared the cache and data from the Facebook ap and tried again and it still will not work.
Just wondering if it is even possible to sync my Facebook to my contacts. I am on Verizon running stock, non-rooted, 4.0.2.
Thanks in advance!

Facebook sync has not worked since Gingerbread. Companies who put lame skins on top of Android usually add a work around. I highly doubt you searched, or you really do fail at searching.

Actually facebook sync does work on some custom roms where the devs have edited some sourcefiles to reactivate it (tutorial on which 2 files need to be edited is somewhere in the forum). However, for Stock Roms, your answer is correct.

Google'll never fix this because they don't want this FB sync feature.
The work around here is using a Custom Rom or installing HaxSync, etc.
+1 for HaxSync!
Its true. Google disabled Facebook Sync on android. Instead they try to shove G+ down your throat. You can install hack sync, or Custom ROMS like AOKP. I have it and it works. But I have disabled facebook Sync because I hate searching my contacts and find 300 contacts with email adresses only.
the ICS contact book doesn't allow us to display only records with phone numbers. I think the emphasis on the people instead of phone contact. As a result, the ICS people app is very difficult to use.
It does, however, just allow you to show your Gmail address book so assuming you have contacts on there with numbers and they're linked to FB it'll just show contacts with numbers
If someone isn't on my Gmail contacts I hide them by only showing Gmail contacts - easy!

It doesn't work because GOOGLE dismantled the old social API. The new API is available in Android 4.0.3. Social stream API in Contacts Provider. IF/when your carrier (Verizon, in my case) certifies the update for release is the problem. LinkedIn and Twitter contacts also will not sync because of this problem. It isn't just Facebook. Overall, this is a problem born out of Google looking to own the contacts sync and rid Android of those crapapps that do a piss poor job of synching. But Facebook will need to update the Android app when Android 4.0.3 is certified and released for a commercially available carrier-certified device. At this point. Out-of-the-box social contact synching is a no go on Android ICS except for Google+. How convenient. Otherwise, you'll need an extra app for that social app.

However twitter still syncs just fine with my contacts on stock 4.0.1.

Technically, the onus is still on Facebook and Twitter to update their existing apps for Android 4.0.2 since there is a social API still included. Something didn't translate right with Android 4.0.2 for the current versions of those apps.

[Q] People app missing all facebook contacts

Hello, how are you?
I have a Samsung Galaxy Nexus GSM stock (yakuj) with Android 4.0.4 and Facebook app 1.9.0.
I added my facebook account and have the facebook app installed. I also checked for syncing contacts under Settings-> account & sync.
However, none of my facebook contacts show up at People app.
I tried deleting the account and re-adding it but I still have nothing.
I also tried to re-install facebook app, and still nothing.
Besides, I also tried to show only the facebook contacts changing the settings at People app->contacts to display->customize, but It didn't work either.
Furthermore, I tried to follow the steps on the link bellow, and It didn't work:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=928393
Please, Does someone have any clue of what can be happening?
I can't figure out why my facebook contacts don't shows at People app.
I appreciate any help you can give me,
Roger
because facebook sync is broken in stock android.

Native Facebook contact syncing has been left out of Android since Gingerbread 2.3.4!
Roman from AOKP made a "fix" to get Facebook contacts to sync but ...
"Unfortunately, the "fix" breaks Picasa upload functionality and exposes all of your contact data insecurely. Facebook and Twitter need to update their applications to use the correct API introduced in IceCream Sandwich." - Peter Alfonso
This is why some dev's like Pete and Team Douche (Cyanogenmod) have not incorporated this "fix".
If you want your Facebook Contacts synced I would suggest buying HaxSync from the Play Store! That's what I did ... Cheers
Here is your solution: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.mots.haxsync&hl=en
It's not free, but it's well worth it. Works flawlessly and is under constant development.

Hello,
thanks a lot for helping.
Is HaxSync app the only workaround for this issue?
BTW, Is this an issue with Android 4.0.4, or Is this an issue of facebook app?
I mean, In order to fix this issue, Is the facebook app the one needed to be fixed(updated to use ICS API)?or Will we have to wait for a fix in the next ICS OTA?
I appreciate any help you can give me

I wouldn't think Facebook will correct this issue if for nothing else other than spite. Your best option is i believe HaxSync its only 99 cents (less than you pay for a coffee) and it securely syncs your contacts, calender events including birthdays and downloads hi-res images of your contacts too. It adds more functionality than the old native sync.

Hello blowtorch,
thanks a lot for helping again.
Sorry, It wasn't clear for me, is the issue on facebook app?or is the issue on Android platform itself?
BTW, I found out the workaround bellow:http://android.modaco.com/topic/350037-enabling-facebook-sync-in-ice-cream-sandwich/
Have someone tried it?
thanks in advance

Again, this is a facebook issue. Your easiest solution is to pony up 99 cents as I originally recommended, it'll give you everything you want and then some, I assure you.
Yes the other solution works, but it comes with other issues and requires a bit more effort. You can decide what's more worthwhile to you - spend the time and effort for a broken solution or spend 99 cents to get everything you need easily.

Actually..the API is there since 4.0.3. Facebook just doesn't care enough to implement it.
Team BAMF doesn't implement it either. Security and stability > feature.

no problem i do what i can
yes basically its the facebook app because its not doing it right ... there was some sort of back story there about fb not wanting to work with google on the issue because fb wanted to take all of the google (gmail) contacts information or something like that.
I think the facebook sync solution you have found there is how Roman from AOKP came up with the "fix" or workaround. That information is more for developers than end users like yourself and obviously is not an easy solution. Again this is not secure syncing either which is why a few respected developers refuse to implement it.
imo HaxSync is the way to go ... fb contacts, hi res images with time line and calendar sync so it offers more than the "fix"

i think facebook doesn't implement it out of spite because of the google plus is now a competing social network (and a better one if only people would adopt it)

FB sync doesn't work yet =/
(There is an option to sync fb at settings->account & sync, but It doesn't do anything)
BTW, have someone tried Friendcaster?
Thanks
I used to use Friendcaster to sync before I got HaxSync but it used to sync really low rez pictures that looked horrible. Don't know if they have fixed this issue since then but you could just try it out. The app is free anyway.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
ok guys, i installed haxsync and can see my own picture in the phone book from my facebook profile but how do i get others in there?

Hello,
thanks a lot for helping
what about "Friends Sync/fsync"?
Has someone tried it?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.watto.program.android.sync.facebook
BTW, I´ve just received FB app update (version 1.9.1), but It doesn't fix the sync issue =/
thanks
theres an easy solution...just copy contacts provider from the aokp that worked and that fixes fb sync since the hack is incorporated in it
