Searching for: stable and userfriendly 5.1 rom - s4mini - Galaxy S 4 Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys
My girlfriend has a s4 mini, stock rom. Her warranty and phone insurance lasts only some more month. After this period I'd like to upgrade her phone to a lollipop rom (or marshmallow eventually, but it's a bit early for that ) Since I own a m8 myself, I can't test all roms here, so I hope you can help me.
I'm searching for a 5.0.1 / 5.1 near stock rom (touchwiz or stock android) wich is easy to use by someone having nothing to do with custom roms/root/modding or never ever heard words like "bootloop" or sth like that
I need no root or xposed framework or such stuff, just a way to get the phone to lollipop.
So please recommed some roms and discuss!
Thanks in advance!

Yeah! Me too!
Need stock Android Lollipop (a la Moto xt-1032) for my GT-i9195L.

Intall the latest snapshot! Its based on 5.1.1 and its pretty stable. The link is for the international LTE model "serranoltexx". You didn't specified which s4 mini model your girlfriend have, so i assumed is the LTE. I was running that snapshot in the past (now i moved on cm13) and was stable enough to be my daily driver! :good:

Thanks for your reply I don't no yet, either. but I assume it's the LTE version, but I'll verify that.
It will take some time until I take action, but I will report my success here

I know the question is about LP ROM, and indeed on LP I found exodus better than CM12.1. But I am now on CM13 (latest nightly) and works even better, no issues at all, so I would recommend it as daily ROM (I have not tried AICP or other CM13 based ROMs)

I came from stock (i9195 LTE) and flashed many CM12 nightlies over the last year (only had a few reboots). Now I'm currently on the latest CM12.1 snapshot (YOG7) it is very stable and has never crashed (installed it shortly after release). However several apps kept crashing in the first few weeks, notably Google Play Services, I put this down to me having done a dirty flash. I cleared cache on affected apps then tried cache & data if still crashing. It fixed a couple but not Play Services & a couple of other apps. After a couple of weeks I was just about to reflash a clean install of a nightly build when it seemed to fix itself. I haven't had any issues in over two months. Only thing I can think of was Play Services updated and fixed it.
I recently installed CM11 on my wifes old NOTE as she'd finally had enough of it's slowness (it has a dodgy emmc chip that does not trim so gets slower and slower) and the fact I had to update apps as it was always out of memory and she couldn't do it. She is a complete technophobe, she was very happy with the sudden improvment in speed but grumbled a bit about the different interface however within a couple of days she was up to speed & loving CM!
---------- Post added at 11:36 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:34 PM ----------
PS. Also flashed the latest COL2 baseband (modem)

You might even want to use this ROM as it's got newer security fixes & many updates (so should???might be more stable) since the last snapshot

Updating as promised.
I bit the bullet, took my chance, and installed CM 12.1 yog7 on my 3 year old Samsung Galaxy S4 mini (gt-i9195L) and I finally and thankfully have lollipop 5.1 on it.
Losses or cons?
Minimal:
- No panoramic photos w/stock camera
- Google clock crashes every few hours, though the analog clock widget does work.
- Some sensors don't work anymore

they did previously.
- Cannot disable or remove the file manager or camera in favor of aftermarket solution, have to make do with two (stock CM and aftermaket coexisting).
- I miss the cool piano sound when powering up my phone, when the Samsung logo swirled in [emoji1]
- I don't currently care for it, but I see a yellow lettered message upon booting:
Warranty Bit: kernel; but since my phone is three years old, I don't care [emoji55] .
In all, with the small cons, I am glad to have changed factory TouchWiz for CM 12.1 and I appreciate the tip given by Charlie, the cons don't weight anything compared to all I have gained by switching.
CM 12.1 is my daily driver.

Is someone planning a KitKat ROM for Desire Z?

Hello,
Im wondering if any active developers are left that will be working on a KitKat ROM for the Desire Z. Not looking for a ETA or anything, just asking if someone is interested.
Android 4.3 isn't even ready for public testing so perhaps we have to wait for KitKat a long time.
Anyway - is it true that Android 4.4 provides better support for older devices?

Support no. It just says APIs for low end RAM devices such as smartwatches and smartwear in general.
Would love this
Im hoping/waiting for this too. I feel like the Desire Z or G2 as it was called in the UK is still the best designed phone out there with a real keyboard and a lot of people like myself are still using it for this reason. When i heard about KitKat providing for low end devices, a light bulb went off for me. Still no word yet tho

i really hope there is some developer with htc desire Z and working on porting kitkat 4.4 . i would love to try it

CM10.2 and 11 progress. CM10.2 isn't that bad to use, there's still some quirks here and there. The kitkat rom is nowhere near stable for a daily driver, I wouldn't even recommend using it for more than like a few hours just to mess around on, but it's at least been somewhat ported showing promise.

Honestly I'd recommend for a daily driver sticking with cm10.1 for the time being if you want a stock android experience, there's still things that need to be worked out for both of the roms

I upgraded from (I think) Flinny's CM 10.1 to CyanKat, and it works well on first boot, but any subsequent reboots either bootloop or freeze at the loading animation (and the screen slowly fades...?). I'm going to try it again once there's another release.
Hopefully KitKat will run smoothly once they sort out the major bugs.
based on how the nexus s overreact on android 4.3.x i dont think the g2 is stable past 4.0 ics based on battery and how smooth it was. htc g2 downfall began at 4.1 os and continue when it come fully smooth os.

[ROM][03-12-13] Andromadus - CM10.2 & CM11.0 - Vision

I guess you've been waiting for this for quite a long time.
So I felt I should upload at least something and stop keeping these builds secret.
Before we start...
This is unstable. VERY unstable, compared to my latest CM10.1 build.
By the way, I had to remove CM10.1 build environment because I have no space left on SSD. No more CM10.1 builds from me, sorry
On a positive note, this build has (compared to CM10.1):
Camera button options (wake/unlock/peek/playback control) — I put this feature upstream. Try it, it's cool
Flash sync is fine
KSM works again (it just magically fixed itself)
DSPManager doesn't suddenly get unloaded from memory and break your listening experience
Persian language for hardware keyboard. The whole hardware keyboard support has been reworked.
Newer Trebuchet, with live folders, icon pack support and other stuff
RAM is about 150 MBytes free with Theme Chooser enabled

How to install?
The usual process, nothing different here.
1: backup
2: wipe
3: install the ROM
4: install Google Apps. I prefer PA GApps "Mini Modular Packages".
How do I report bugs?
Now that's important.
I've set up an issue tracker to prevent cluttering this thread.
Keep in mind that a bug report without a logcat/dmesg or at least a precise description of a bug wouldn't help anyone.
If you stumble upon anything strange — try to reproduce it (and save a logcat, just in case).
Pro-tip: use "adb logcat -C" to colorize the output and make it easier to read! (not sure if this works on Windows, though)
Unfortunately, there are bugs that are caused by CM devs or Google (GApps are buggy, too). I'll close these bug reports, because I just can't fix that. I'm not a magician
Issues we already aware of:
EGL: flashy CRT animation (disable it) and buggy hwcomposer (icons/widgets suddenly blacked out is also caused by it). This was the major show-stopper.
Switching SELinux to Enforcing mode will instantly make the phone freeze. Don't do this!
Trackpad wake/unlock doesn't work, and there's no way to enable it. I use "pure" CM frameworks_base that doesn't have these features baked in.
Camcorder FCs when you try to un-pause video recording.
[Fixed] AOSP Keyboard FCs if you don't install GApps — install them
[Fixed] Mobile data is unstable — edit build.prop to fix the issue.
Issue you should be aware of: (non ROM-related)
Don't buy Samsung laptops, they have display hinges made of a sh*tty plastic.

Please don't make additional mirrors. Instead, ask me to mirror the file myself.
Why? I need to keep control of builds, and remove/replace them if something goes really wrong.
Kitkat?
While I still prepare my build environment for Kitkat and applying some patches to make it compile, you can have a build provided by guest1.
Initially, it was built purely for ringtone bug testing (factoid: every other htc msm7x30 device has ringtone shutting off randomly. I don't know why), but I think that'll do it for giving you an overview of what does CM11 look like at the moment.
This is even more unstable!
4.4 is also slower for some reason (probably because of different qcom_display repo used for it).
I did almost no tests with it, so there's probably a lot more to fix.
Google Drive link for 4.4: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B5ahny5WGurFS1Z3N3N6V0xsSVk/edit?usp=sharing

Once this gets a tad more stable I am going to for sure try this out. I just flashed a fresh rom today and I'm trying to limit the fact I flash a rom at least 7-15 times a week (it's addicting, what can I say).

BUT I'm a still faithful user and BIG THANKS for this great piece of rom and great work from devs! Thank you!
great news!!!! thanks hitted
Let's not clamor for Kitkat yet. The Galaxy S4 got a stable-ish build of Kitkat just a few days ago, and it'll take a while for unstable builds to come out from the official CM tree. When that happens, development will trickle down here.
I mean, I would like to maintain my always-faithful-if-slow backup phone. It's gotten me through some times when my other primary phones went dead on me.
I get server connection errors in the Google Play store with this ROM and the linked GApps. Is anyone else having this problem?
I can actually connect to the store fine, it's the downloading or updating of apps that it errors out on.

Go to settings --> Storage --> And I think there should be a cache storage size for the sd card+internal rom, clear those, sign out of your google account then sign back in! At least I think those are the steps, I can't fully recall
That did it! Thanks! In all the years I've had an android phone I've never had to do that after flashing a rom.

Yeah, from my research a few days ago on that problem it seems to be common in 4.3 roms for some unknown reason. I'm glad I could help!
I made an issue tracker.
That'd be easier to track bugs and get feedback without constantly quoting each other on forum pages. (because forums are linear)
I also decided to try to adapt some Sony/Samsung MSM7x30 changes. Maybe they've been more successful than we were?
If I were you, I would give up developing Android 4.3 and focus on preparing 4.4. But I am not a developer and I possibly don't know something so...
Anyway, thanks for making Android 4.3 happen on our Desire Z and good luck!
I will wait for 4.4 though.

Valid point.
The thing is, 4.4/CM11 is in early stage yet, and it will still need the same work I'm doing for 4.3 (plus, camera is broken on other MSM7x30 devices).

How to check for updates?
Hi,
I have sgh-i317m and CM12 as my rom. Everytime I check for updates in the about phone section and click refresh under CyanogenMod updates, it says no updates available. The version I have on my note 2 is 12-20150110-unofficial-t0lteatt. Would anyone be able to tell me if I can flash anything with more updates and a better version and also how I should keep checking for updates?
Thanks!
I can't get any keyboard to work. Android keyboard won't pop up, and after downloading the Google Keyboard apk and installing it (and of course setting it as active), it still won't pop up. Any ideas? This is the first time I've tried putting Lollipop onto this phone.
Edit: Got it working by either enabling or disabling the hardware keyboard option (I don't remember which it was). All is perfectly stable for me so far. Snapchat videos cut short by about 30% but that's always been a problem for me on all non-Touchwiz ROMs.
Does anyone know why I always get this error message when I attach photos to messages in most apps? In guessing it has something to do with reading from SD card (all of my media is there), but I haven't been able to track down the issue or a fix. It pops up each time an image preview is attempting to load it seems, so I have to quickly chose a gallery app to use to navigate to the picture to send in between the error popups. Thanks for any help.
-Edit- Fixed by reformatting SD card to ExFat.

I haven't ever come across that issue. Try clearing app data from all relevant apps (i.e. Media Storage, Gallery, etc.).
GPS no longer works for me And I've seen a return of the "Can't connect to camera" issue! Maybe it's just time for me to get a newer phone . . .
Well the Exfat formatting turned out to just accidentally work for a little while. It has something to do with reading from the external. I have all of my media on it (non on internal) and I figured out a quick work around. I just took about 10 screenshots and left them in my internal storage. Now I am running smoothly.

To install OmniROM please follow these instructions:
Do a factory reset / full wipe
Flash the OmniROM zip file, the BeansGapps ZIP file.
Reboot the tablet and enjoy OmniROM
Downloads for Omni 7.1
Below are the files you need for flashing OmniROM:
Download OmniROM http://dl.omnirom.org/manta/
Download TWRP https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=961840155545587690
Beans GApps https://www.androidfilehost.com/?w=files&flid=171927
SuperSU from Chainfire: http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu
There are some things that you need to know
before using Omni 7.1:
Official TWRP causes some problems with SELinux on a first flash with GApps. Please use the TWRP version provided in the download section above.
If you are on a HOMEBUILD version and want to go to a WEEKLY build, you will have to do a factory reset first.
You can flash GApps only ONCE. If you flash a new build, you do not need to flash GApps again. Just let the backup script do its work. If you do "dirty" flash GApps, you might get crashes. The only thing to do then is to fully wipe your data partition.
If you reflash GApps without doing a factory reset first, you will have problems
Enjoy OmniROM

Thanks. I installed this a couple days ago and it's running smoother than stock was. Less lag, and certain apps were bogging down and freezing on me after 5-10 minutes, no more (Flipboard for one). Which is curious, unless this has some performance improvements. Omni has always run smoother on my manta than any of the other custom roms.
Glad to see this topic
Installed the first versions you published in your 4.4 topic, going to upgrade to this new version
Great job and thanks for your hard work!

Flashed this on top of Lollipopalooza (dirty flash) and so far everything seems to work just fine. Feels a little bit snappier than before (which Antutu seemed to confirm).
I have uploaded a new version. This includes a renewed power menu and volume popup.
Nice rom. Extended power menu and transculent status + nav bar makes my wife happy )
Hmmm my last build has some audio problems (audio not playing). This weekend i will make another build that solves it.
I will flash anyway as I don't use audio on it
My N10 is now integrated into my living room table to control my future house and my Home Theater

I'm getting some serious battery drain. Checked battery and it looks like Miscellaneous is the cause. Anyone else having this issue or know a fix?

You should install a better battery monitor. I can recommend gsam and the gsam root companion app. Let the nexus charge fully and do a full power cycle. After that check gsam for more in depth info for what is causing your wakelocks.
upped from Omni nightly
thanks for the effort, looking good so far!
New version uploaded
New version uploaded. I did not have time to test this, as there are no GApps for this available yet and i need my tablet for work.[emoji6]

Thanks Scanno, thats a quick turnaround to release a 5.1 ROM. Will test it later today.
FYI: Xposed isn't compatible yet with 5.1, which is kind of a shame if any user hasn't heard yet.

The difference between 5.0 and 5.1 is not that big so they could be merged rather quickly compared to the jump from 4.4 to 5.0.
Seems like my 5.1 build is working [emoji6]
Pa Gapps has a beta gapps version for 5.1
looks like banks gapps have also been updated to 5.1, from a nexus 6 base: http://fitsnugly.euroskank.com/?rom=banks&device=gapps
will test asap
EDIT: all seems well, impressive battery life in deep sleep now, was not so good on 4.4 Omni, thanks again for the hard work m8
Really nice work, it's running smoothly and by far better than the old 4.4 rom. Only thing I'm missing at the moment is Xposed, but time will come

Disclaimer
I'm not responsible for any damages on your device.
The focus is to optimize the ROM in many areas and compiled it with custom toolchain Uber for more performance and smoothness.
SlimRoms was choosen as a base because it is a lightweight and not a bloated ROM, but it still has rich features. Combined with some of CM features, I bake a ROM that has more useful features but still lightweight.
The ROM and the kernel are tested by me first before I make it available online. I could have overseen something during testing, please be understanding.
Installation instructions
Coming from stock or another ROM:
Full wipe: system, data, cache, dalvik cache.
Flash the SlimSaber build.
Flash gapps from here
Flash latest SuperSU from here
Coming from previous SlimSaber build:
Flash the SlimSaber build.
No need to wipe dalvik-cache. The system will do it anyway if it needs to.
No need to re-flash gapps. Gapps will be restored back automatically by backup tool during flashing.
Known Issues
"Prevent accidental wake up" display option causes black screen when incoming call comes in
Disable it for the time being, until the bug is fixed

I will become a really happy camper if this becomes a fully supported ROM. Still using your RR 5.1 and very hesitant to change.

I was thinking about seeing about maybe being official. Considering this ROM is slightly modified the slimlp dev team might not let me. Either way, I think this is a pretty solid ROM. It doesn't have a lot of customizations, but its pretty darn close to aosp code.

Very excited for this. Thank you and hope all works well.
I see you keeping busy with the D851 love and I appreciate your efforts. I'll be trying this one very soon.

I had just downloaded (but not flashed) the 0.8 build from the Slim site before seeing this. No question which one I'm going to flash now. ?

Thanks for making this available. I clean flashed this last night, and it's very smooth but the camera app doesn't start, anyone else?

I'll retry a clean flash later, back on Bliss for now - but obviously I must have done something wrong there
I can dig how it users nebula kernel right off the bat, very cool addition to the d851 lineup
I did a clean flash of
Slim-d851-5.1.1.beta.0.8-UNOFFICIAL-20151002-1502
+ Slim_mini_gapps.BETA.5.1.build.0.x-20150922
almost everything worked ok but Clock, when tried to setup or edit an alarm just crashed, tried twice, clean flashes wiping all except internal & external.

I might need some guys to try a test build. I added some stuff in that's Bluetooth related. I don't use Bluetooth, so if you do pm me and I'll send you a link to the test build when its done.

I'm willing to test. Any idea if Bluetooth LE is supported in this ROM?

No problem - I've been wanting to find a ROM that supports Bluetooth LE (apart from the stock ROM) so if it works here, that'd be really amazing! I have a bluetooth LE device so I can test it out and see if it does work.
Thanks for releasing this rom @aclegg2011. I've been testing it for a few days now and it's my daily driver. Everything available works. Except rro layers but thats less important. 39c idle temp when I was always running at 50c before and the battery lasted 24hrs of normal usage the first day I installed it.
*edit*
I'm using open gapps pico. I also have still not gotten voice recognition working but I'm pretty sure other people have.
Everything working perfect with opengapps. I tried slimgapps but had clock fcs.
Feature Request for Contacts app:
- There is not Groups tab on Contacts so cannot make any group operation like send a message to a group.
- Custom Fields, would be very good to be able to add custom fields.
Very good job done with this rom, actually more than a very good job, but to be perfect should have my feature request made real:laugh:
