screen brightness does not go "full" brightness right away. - Xperia Z5 Premium Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I Just want to ask why does my Z5 P takes about a few seconds ( 8-10 seconds ) to achieve full brightness after turning on the screen from sleep. For example, after activating the screen from sleep and going directly to instagram, I noticed that my phone isn't on full brightness but instead a bit dim( lets say approx 70-90% bright if basing on the brightness slider in settings). As I scroll at the pictures, I can see it slowly going to full brightness after 8-10 seconds right before my very eyes. Is it supposed to really act this way? I find this very annoying and bothersome as this happen not only in instagram but in fb and browser as well.
By the way, I always set my phone on full brightness and the adaptive brightness disabled. Smart Backlight Control also disabled. So what gives????
Thanks.

I do not have such issues... Min to max it changes immediately.

Hi. Thanks for the reply. I'm not talking about the moment while youre moving the slider min to max or vice versa. What Im saying is that my brightness has always been placed at max with adaptive brightness turned off and yet when I activate the screen (for example to browse instgram or google chrome) , it doesnt go full brightness right away but instead takes approx 10 seconds to achieve the max brightnes (you can actually see the screen change it brightness right before you). I find this behavior weird. Can somebody do me a favor and try browsing instagram in a very dark room and observe if the event is also happening to your unit.
Thanks.

You are right if I set the screen brightness to minimum and turn on adaptive brightness it stays at minimum brightness... Must be a software glitch...

anyone else experiencing this. Still happening on my phone.

I just tried to do the following to see if I can repeat this issue as well.
Turn off adaptive brightness --> turn brightness to max --> load up a page on google chrome --> turn off display --> turn display back on
The screen was on max brightness every time I did this. Although I don't have access to a really dark room right now (in the office) but I can try again when I get home and see if this reproduces the issue.

Auto brightness is useless!

In a 100% dark area (movie theater, etc.), when I flick my wrist to turn on the watch, it turned on with full brightness on. It stay there indefinitely... sometimes it'll go away by itself, other time I have to do something, like swiping cards before the screen will go dim.
In a semi (50% dark), the screen will not turn on to its full brightness, but at... dim. WTH?!
Stick watch face?
I've noticed this as well (when driving at night). Since it turns on all the time (I steer with the same hand I wear my watch on), I've noticed lots of strange behavior. Sometimes it turns on very bright, and then goes back to sleep. Sometimes it turns on bright and then dims to the minimal brightness that it should be. Sometimes it turns on with the appropriate, minimum brightness. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. I'm running a stock watch face, and have very few apps installed.
As someone offered up 'muting' the watch while driving in another thread as a possible solution, it doesn't help me. Whether or not the watch is muted, it still wakes up all the time, and varying brightness levels.

Auto brightness works well for me with ambient mode ON, I think I remember it being buggy with ambient mode OFF, what is yours set to?

I have ambient mode OFF to save battery. Will turning it on fix the issue? I use Sleep as Android for sleep tracking and turn Ambient off and it lights up here and there at night.

^^This...well probably not locked
I did a little thread cleaning to remove the off topic arguments about using a device (phone or watch) in a movie theatre. There were a lot of people who quoted these posts, and unfortunately I had to remove these posts as well...sorry for that.
Here is the thing, this thread is about the buggy behavior of the watch waking up at full brightness. It doesn't matter if it is in a theatre, whilst driving the car, or you just woke up in the middle of the night and want to check the time. More that one person has reported the issue and there has been a proposed fix...please keep the thread focused on finding the root causes, fixes, work arounds, etc. No matter what, please knock off the name calling, that will only get you into trouble!
Thanks!:good:

Try turning ambient mode ON during the day,
I just tested and with it off the screen does occasionally come on at full brightness even in the dark. With ambient on it only comes on bright the first time, quickly dims, and stays dim until taken into daylight :good:

Interesting. So with ambient ON, it still turn on at full brightness but momentarily. I'll test this and will report back.
Well, I'm having the opposite problem following the last update.
it frequently (at work right now, for example) comes up EXTREMELY dim, I'd guess maybe 5x dimmer than brightness setting '1'.
I'm setting it to '1' as a workaround for now.

Wait for the next 5.0 update. .there's options like theater mode. ..and other brightness modes coming to wear

Smart Brightness for Moto 360
Try the application "smart brightness for moto 360" from the Google play. With this application you can set a minimum brightness and better view in low light environments.
With the minimum set to 20% and auto brightness on you will get better battery life and better experience in dark situation.

The application really works. If you want see how works, do the followings steps:
1. open Smart Brightness App
2. Turn on the application
3. Set the minimum brightness to 20%
4. Turn on the auto brightness.
5. Go to a dark room and wait until Moto360 to turn off the screen.
6. Touch the screen to wakeup the screen. (This is necessary because the Smart Brightness application start when the screen is on and stop when the screen is off).
You will see a clear image after this steps. Now go to the smart brightness app and turn it off (Using the on/off switch located at the top of the screen). Repeat the steps 5 and 6. Now the screen will look dark, because it is the factory auto brightness.
I recommend to use the 7 days trial. After 7 days after using it you will notice the difference.
I'm using this app over a month and works fine. Please let me know any other concern about the application.
For me its not the low light the problem as this works, is outside doens't go bright enough in direct sunlight

Max screen brightness?

Max is not max on this phone and it drives me nuts (I like my screen bright). Is there a way to get max brightness instead of auto brightness even when it is supposed to be turned off?

It seems there is a bug on this phone. I talked to Samsung and ATT, and they said I should change the phone.
It is very annoying when you take a picture in sunny day. You cannot see the screen because of the max brightness is not max.
And also sometime, the screen go to real max without any smooth change and immediately dim back. so disappointed.
I dont know how to fix it, but I will go to change the phone accordingly.
I will keep you update.

Does everyone's screen auto dim?

I have auto dimness unchecked, and whenever the brightness is set to over 55%, after unlocking the phone it always auto dims byitself.
Is this normal? no other phone does this. Can this be bypassed somehow? It's jarring when you unlock and see a bright vibrant screen and all of a sudden it dims like 10% or so after 5 seconds.
Phone auto dims when it starts to heat up regardless of your settings.
Otherwise it shouldn't as long as it's not set to auto brightness.

Ok, but when the phone hasn't been used in 30 minutes, and not "hot" at all, this still happens. This also happened with the G3 as well.
Is there a way to turn this off? This post has over 100 views, can everyone please comment if their screen does the same thing? Are there any solutions?
What carrier/model do you have?
I just tried this on mine, Verizon, 611A software.
With Auto Brightness disabled, set to 40%, I powered off, turned it on, then unlocked. The brightness did not change. Then set it to 100% brightness (Auto still disabled), and did the same thing. Again, the brightness did not change.
I have, however, seen the screen brightness reduced when I'm using Auto Brightness. If I turned it off in a bright area, then unlock it in a dim area, the screen will be bright for a moment, then will turn itself down, presumably based on evaluating the current ambient brightness.

auto brightness is always off. It's the AT&T non rooted stock version. I just tuned brightness to 70%, powered off, powered on, and after unlocking and opening chrome it auto dimmed within 5 seconds.
Does it do it if you don't open Chrome?
I've seen apps make their own brightness adjustments (like a camera app that maxes out the screen brightness when it starts up). I want to say that Chrome (on my last phone) is one of them. Alternately, turn it on, unlock, wait 15 seconds, THEN start Chrome. If it still happens right after Chrome loads, then it's a Chrome phenomenon, not a just-turned-on phenomenon., and at least you can isolate what to chase down.

Yes it dims even if I don't use chrome. No matter whats on the screen it dims a little after 5 seconds.

Download LUX (couple of bucks) set it to manual, 100% brightness on all LUX setting areas and it will bypass LG's lame attempt to hide the fact that they can't make a phone that doesn't suffer severe battery drain and overheating.
Your problem is called High Tempurate Thermal Mitigation (throttling). I depise it but with LUX, I tell the phone what is acceptable to me, not the other way around.
If I wanted to be dictated to like a submissive I'd just get an iphone.
I don't doubt that excess temps can cause the phone to adjust its behavior. But that quickly after turning the screen on? That seems really fast for something to go over-temperature, and for a sensor to also detect it that quickly. You may be 100% right, it's just not something I'd expect to happen that quickly.
This is a serious suggestion, despite how it may sound What if you put the phone in the fridge for 15 minutes or so, then do the same test? Does the screen still dim after 5 seconds? Depending on the humidity level, the phone could start to condense after coming out of a cold environment, so use your best judgement.
For a "safer" test, hold it in front of an air conditioner for a few minutes, with the screen off. Then, still at the A/C, turn the screen on, and see if it immediately dims.
If it suddenly runs for a while before dimming, then I'd agree it's likely temperature-related. If it still behaves the same way, then perhaps it's a different cause.
Either way, Lux sounds like a nice addition to these phones, from everything I've read. I've just been too cheap to try it yet But the rather coarse auto-brightness from LG has me curious.

Have you tried the cool-down suggestions (fridge, A/C,) ?
Try installing ThermoCF to monitor the battery temperature. I find that when used for GPS (mounted on windshield) the screen will dim with direct sunlight. The temperature is in excess of 120 °F when this happens.
I just left the G4 screen on 50% brightness for about 5 minutes and the temperature remained 98 °F (this is on a wireless charger, next to a warm laptop fan exhaust). I switched to 100% brightness and the battery temperature increased to 100 °F over the next five minutes but no dimming has occurred. After a few more minutes the temperature dropped to 99 °F with the screen remaining at 100% brightness.
Different from your problem but: I turned on the developer options and set the screen to "always-on when charging" and have noticed that the screen dims after some amount of time (I haven't timed, maybe 15 minutes or so). I ended up here because I was looking for a way to change that time and may download the LUX app to do it.
Nice to know I am not the only one having this problem. I use my phone to play Ingress and sucks the battery dry faster than anything. The screen kept going dim as I was charging.
I also have this same issue on my G5. I've tried the Lux, free version, and it still dimmed on its own. I wonder if the paid version will help out my situation?

I like the auto-dim, and my phone seems to accept manual "guidance" as to how I prefer the auto-dim to work.
What I mean is that I can manually bump up the brightness slider (while auto-dim is checked/enabled), and the phone will auto-dim using the brighter setting. Or, I can bump the brightness slider down, and auto-dim will remember that and adjust the brightness.
So it's like you can control the baseline setting for auto-dim by using the brightness slider with auto-dim enabled, and then the phone will auto adjust from that baseline. I play ingress and during the day I bump up the slider, but during the night play I'll decrease the slider and still enjoy auto dim both ways, and preserve the most battery that way.
Aint looked to see if g4 has got it. I know g3 you go into hidden menu. And turn the thermal mitigations on and it stopped the throttle down. Lg has an insanley low throttle down temp.

On the g3 and g4 its under main hiden menu. I use shortcutmaster to get to them all. But the g4 the options not there. Im not sure i dont know anything about the g5. Im not interested in it at all. I am selling my g4. So i can get another g3.
Now i know theres an app 3ctoolbox. And in cpu settings you can modify the unclock temps i dont know if it does the screen.
So, the hidden menu in Marshmallow, here it is folks. Where would I be able to find the option to turn off screen dim do to thermal mitigation? Anyone have any ideas?
Sent from my LG-H830 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Mine also started to auto dim with auto brightness off. I have the H812 from Bell . I'm sure that on mine it's the proximity light sensor that is faulty or in the software. Because when i turn on the phone while blocking completely the proximity sensor it doesn't dim anymore. (knock knock doesn't work while sensor is blocked) but problem comes back if i wake up the phone without blocking the sensor. I have tried it many times and it's the same thing over and over.
Calibration in the hidden menu doesn't fix it, Lux and many other brightness apps iv'e tried don't fix the problem lol
I also use lux with cf.lumen
Lux will manage the auto brightness as per your preferences because i found the stock LG screen was about 15% lower than id like in all environments.
Cf.lumen actually changes the colour of the display rather than applying a dumb screen filter on top for night viewing.
The only thing Lux does for me is dim the screen twice since the phone already dims by itself 3-4 seconds after the screen is turned on. I can guaranty it's not an overheating problem, even after 30 minutes in the fridge it does it. I'm tempted to have the proximity sensor changed but will most likely wait for LG to release 6.0.1 to see if it will fix it.
Nougat 7.0 is days away and still no 6.0.1 MM for the G4. Pardon my language but LG really sucks . This is my first and last LG phone

auto brightness too low

hey guys,
im having trouble with adaptive brightness since some time and i am pretty sure sth has changed there.
my screen is just to dark for the most time.
some time ago i could just increase the brightness value and the adaptive brightness would work with that (higher) value, like an anchor value.
now, by doing that, i just change the overall brightness and it will jump back after some time.
is this the same for you guys? it gets obviously when being in a dark room and ramping up the brightness (with adaptive brightness enabled) to 100 percent. now when i disable adaptive brightness, exactly nothing changes in terms of brightness, however former times, there would be still an increase in brightness since 100 percent with adaptive brightness does not equal 100 percent on manual brightness (at least in a dark place). now it does.
is this the same for you? was this an update or sth?

nothing set in settings.
also just tried another one, kikasura or how it is callled. same thing.
just that we are on the same page here: you still can increase the anchor value in brightness settings. or will it, too, just increase your overall brightness for a short time and as soon as lights change or you lock the screen it will be back to previous values?
I stop using auto brightness because some times he is crazy.
I prefer manual mod, like this I have the hand on it and i consum lot less battery (It's my feeling)
Adaptive Brightness is still working fine for me. The way I like to "calibrate" it is when in pitch dark, I set it all the way down to 0. From there it'll always go maximum when in sunlight and indoors it's somewhere in between and does fine. If that's not enough, try resetting adaptive brightness:

It is happening the same to me on very low light scenarios, auto brightness will go to the lower value, setting the screen without almost no bright, besides I put it manually higher. Maybe this happened after a update I dont know.

Question Auto brightness bugged

Is anyone having issues with auto brightness, jumping up and down every few seconds? Im currently sat in a dimly lit room with the TV on and my screen keeps changing brightness levels every few seconds, if I pull down the notification area I can see the slider jumping about. I'm guessing the phone is reacting to the TV changing brightness levels as the picture changes but it seems way too sensitive.
Yeah known issue afaik. I'm hoping it gets resolved on an update

One of the fixes in the November update was "Improvements for auto-brightness response in certain lighting conditions.".
I think auto brightness has always been an issue with Pixels. Its a feature I always turn off at this point

Yeah it is up and down like a brides nighty when the light it low on mine, it isn't smooth like it was on my Pixel 5. It feels a bit like the sample rate needs a longer delay because just an increase in brightness on my TV can send my Pro brightness shooting up, the adaptive display needs to wait a few seconds before acting.

Yeah my pixel 5 and 4a 5G never had this issue (same room and lighting conditions) its crap we have to pay to be beta testers nowadays, guess we will have to wait for another "fix" in next update.

Should we really have to turn things off, considering the cost of this phone? Throw in a case and charger and your over £900 in for this phone, everything should work out of the box without having to turn off features.
It's horrible. When I sit at night in a dark room watching TV, it seems to react to the TV and jump all over the place. Never had this on a phone before. Why can't Google get auto brightness right? It's ridiculous.
Personally, I've always preferred Pixel's handling of auto-brightness to that of my recent Note 10+. I thought Samsung's auto-brightness didn't adapt very well (besides the dimmest not being as dim as the Pixel when using in the dark).
