Auto Brightness working for you?

Hi Guys,
So I finally got the desire after being with an iPhone for the past 18 months. Lovely phone so far, even if it feels a little 'work in progress' in some depts.
Anyways!
Have any of you with the phone enabled auto brightness? Does it work? When I jump into the settings to enable it it seems to kick in (once i tick the auto brightness checkbox) but once I actually hit OK to save the changes the screen brightness shoots up again and then doesnt seem to react to ambient light.

I don't think I've seen it adjust by itself at all...

It works for me and I have seen it adjust.

im not sure really if it works because it always seems the same? i have changed it to 30% now which is just acceptable and we ll see if it gives any battery boost

That's the idea, auto brightness adjusts so that the screen looks the same brightness to your eye at any light level. When it's dark the brightness decreases and when it's light the brightness increases thus you see it as thee same due to the way your eye is already adjusted.

yeah Lol exactly, thats the whole point of auto screen adjustment. if you are indoors all (or most of) the time like me than keep it manual to 30-50%. otherwise leave it auto

Mine works a treat the only thing i do is when i go out the house i turn the brightness to manual and put it on full, as this is the only bad side to this phone the led does suffer in direct sun so full brightness is required.

I haven't seen any change in my screen brightness, whether in full sunlight or middle of the night in a dark room!
Is a bit annoying, would like to know if it can be fixed or we're waiting for the next firmware...

Where's the sensor ? With the Hero, placing a finger over the top part of the phone tricked the sensor but it doesn't seem to on the Desire. Interestingly though, there must be something there, the way the screen flashes up when you remove the phone from your ear

Works fine here

It seems that on my Desire the only time the automatic brightness actually tests the light is when I unlock my screen.
I can actually see the brightness change then, but if I switch lights on/off while it's already unlocked it doesn't automaticly adapt to the light.

I only checked it through the Android SDK using Dalvik Debug Monitor and the phone certainly did continuously check and correct screen brightness according to it. Visually, it was too difficult to discern what was happening and when due to my own visual limitations when the amount of light changed.

Auto brightness is useless!

In a 100% dark area (movie theater, etc.), when I flick my wrist to turn on the watch, it turned on with full brightness on. It stay there indefinitely... sometimes it'll go away by itself, other time I have to do something, like swiping cards before the screen will go dim.
In a semi (50% dark), the screen will not turn on to its full brightness, but at... dim. WTH?!

Stick watch face?

I've noticed this as well (when driving at night). Since it turns on all the time (I steer with the same hand I wear my watch on), I've noticed lots of strange behavior. Sometimes it turns on very bright, and then goes back to sleep. Sometimes it turns on bright and then dims to the minimal brightness that it should be. Sometimes it turns on with the appropriate, minimum brightness. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. I'm running a stock watch face, and have very few apps installed.
As someone offered up 'muting' the watch while driving in another thread as a possible solution, it doesn't help me. Whether or not the watch is muted, it still wakes up all the time, and varying brightness levels.

Emm...you mean stock watch face? If yes, I am using the classic one.

Auto brightness works well for me with ambient mode ON, I think I remember it being buggy with ambient mode OFF, what is yours set to?

I have ambient mode OFF to save battery. Will turning it on fix the issue? I use Sleep as Android for sleep tracking and turn Ambient off and it lights up here and there at night.

I did a little thread cleaning to remove the off topic arguments about using a device (phone or watch) in a movie theatre. There were a lot of people who quoted these posts, and unfortunately I had to remove these posts as well...sorry for that.
Here is the thing, this thread is about the buggy behavior of the watch waking up at full brightness. It doesn't matter if it is in a theatre, whilst driving the car, or you just woke up in the middle of the night and want to check the time. More that one person has reported the issue and there has been a proposed fix...please keep the thread focused on finding the root causes, fixes, work arounds, etc. No matter what, please knock off the name calling, that will only get you into trouble!

Try turning ambient mode ON during the day,
I just tested and with it off the screen does occasionally come on at full brightness even in the dark. With ambient on it only comes on bright the first time, quickly dims, and stays dim until taken into daylight :good:

Interesting. So with ambient ON, it still turn on at full brightness but momentarily. I'll test this and will report back.

Well, I'm having the opposite problem following the last update.
it frequently (at work right now, for example) comes up EXTREMELY dim, I'd guess maybe 5x dimmer than brightness setting '1'.
I'm setting it to '1' as a workaround for now.

Try the application "smart brightness for moto 360" from the Google play. With this application you can set a minimum brightness and better view in low light environments.
With the minimum set to 20% and auto brightness on you will get better battery life and better experience in dark situation.

Sadly, the auto brightness doesn't seem to work...yeah, just realized that after using it for a week.

The application really works. If you want see how works, do the followings steps:
1. open Smart Brightness App
2. Turn on the application
3. Set the minimum brightness to 20%
4. Turn on the auto brightness.
5. Go to a dark room and wait until Moto360 to turn off the screen.
6. Touch the screen to wakeup the screen. (This is necessary because the Smart Brightness application start when the screen is on and stop when the screen is off).
You will see a clear image after this steps. Now go to the smart brightness app and turn it off (Using the on/off switch located at the top of the screen). Repeat the steps 5 and 6. Now the screen will look dark, because it is the factory auto brightness.
I recommend to use the 7 days trial. After 7 days after using it you will notice the difference.
I'm using this app over a month and works fine. Please let me know any other concern about the application.

For me its not the low light the problem as this works, is outside doens't go bright enough in direct sunlight

Adaptive brightness too dramatic?

I've seen a couple posts about delays with adaptive brightness, but this is a different item. I'm seeing that the adaptive brightness alters the brightness a little too dramatically. In a somewhat dark room (not pitch black) the brightness will be at absolute minimum even when the brightness is about 1/3 up on the slider. In a moderately bright room that same brightness setting will be near maximum.
Does anyone else notice this as an issue? I'm just wondering if it's normal (ie, software calibration issue) or if the brightness sensor might not be seated correctly.

It's normal. Or at least it sounds like it is working the same way mine is. And yes, IMO it is a little too sensitive. The Lux app works beautifully if you want an alternative. Also, the goog is known for tweaking this feature over time with updates.

I've noticed this too. The biggest thing for me is walking down the street at dusk (so not dark out yet) I can't read the screen as it turns it all the way down, then, when I walk under a street light, it turns it all the way up to full! It's one extreme or the other, there seems to be no middle ground.

In other words "adaptive brightness has mind of its own!"

This is why I have always kept this setting off. The brightness just changing on its own always annoyed me.

When it works properly (and it should) for ones uses, it's great, it's automatic, what's not to like? It's a pita to always have to change brightness manually just to see a phone display depending on ambient lighting which varies immensely for many users.

I agree. I have it set to maybe around 15-20% (centered over the WiFi symbol below it) and I never need to touch it. Gets dark enough for night driving and bright enough to read outside. Never found it stuck on one or the other when it shouldn't be.

If you buy the app Lux you can customize how it adapts your brightness. The free version is good to but you have to use mostly default settings. By default it only adapts brightness when the screen turns on.

Adaptive Brightness Issues

With adaptive brightness on my screen frequently (every 20 seconds or so) changes brightness slightly even when the ambient light isn't changing. It's very annoying when reading and most noticeable with light backgrounds.
Is this a common issue or does it sound like I have a defective sensor?

Same here.
So annoying I had to turn adaptive off.
Seems to be when I move, probably changing sensor and it's too sensitive. My head mush change/reflect light on sensor
Anyway it's so distracting that I can't use adaptive brightness, except when pitch dark I can set to 0% adaptive to have lowest light output

No issues here. I actually think the brightness swing is much better than the OG Pixel XL. I can just leave the setting at 50%. On the OG XL I'd have to turn the brightness down in the living room with lighting from 1 lamp and a tv because it'd be burning my retinas.

I installed Lux Dash and disabled "adaptive brightness" and let Lux handle it. You can go into the profile editor for Lux and setup different presets for different levels of light, you can also adjust the min and max allowed brightness and even setup how you want it to adjust brightness (fade, only set on unlock, dynamic, etc)
It has really made this screen amazing and even helps with battery because most the day my screen doesn't go above 15-20%

I've been fine here with the Adaptive Brightness too. Doesn't change too often at all for me.

I installed Lux also and that did the trick. I assume the sensor is fine since Lux uses it with no problem. It's odd that some of us are having problems and others aren't but it doesn't seem to be a sensor issue.

Having this same issue any solution?

I'm curious but how exactly is it reacting for you? Are you just sitting in bed with the lights on and it's still adjusting up and down the brightness? Cause that's what I'm doing right now and it hasn't fluctuated at all. If I put it on the bedside table it'll brighten up and when I pick it up it dims but that's it.

Yeah that's too much fluctuations don't you think I mean on my iPhone x or any other iPhone that I have have used so far I never could tell that the adaptive brightness was on but this device does it in an obvious way and way too frequently that im not sure anymore if this is what it's supposed to do I chatted with a Google agent and they forced quit ambient service thing from system apps and I think that still didn't resolve the issue. I will pop up in a vz store tomorrow and check out if their display devices are doing the same

I'm curious to hear what the tell you. Lux has helped me a lot bit I still notice it. To be fair I think I only notice in a dim or dark room with the TV on but this is the first phone I've used where it's noticeable to me. I'm also wondering if this is how it's supposed to work or if there's something wrong with my phone.

What I described was too much? Sounds appropriate to me. If there's extra light on the phone, I want it to get brighter. If that light goes away, I want it to get dimmer. Now if it was happening with no light changing then I would be annoyed. I keep it at 29% with Adaptive Brightness on and it's not too dark in outside light and not too bright in pitch dark.

I'm having the same issue. I'm on my second Pixel 2 XL so I don't think it's a sensor problem. I only notice it in lower lighting but it's really annoying when it happens. Haven't seen this issue on any other phone. Im trying out Lux now and set it to only adjust when waking up. There were similar issues when Lux was set to Dynamic.

Ever since Google thought they knew better than everyone else and got rid of auto brightness for adaptive brightness, it's been trash for me. I CONSTANTLY have to raise it in dark rooms and lower it in bright rooms. AKA, I might as well turn it off because I'm manually adjusting it every time anyway.
All in all, it's terrible.

You know Adaptive Brightness is a mix of manual and auto brightness right? I remember auto brightness actually having the issues you're describing because there was no way to adjust it if it was set. If you have Adaptive Brightness on high enough, it should be bright enough in dark and bright situations. I believe people's issues are that it adjusts too often or the opposite, it's too dark in light rooms and too bright in dark rooms.

Yeah I know it's supposed to be a mix somewhat. It's supposed to match the setting you set to whatever the surrounding brightness is relative to your brightness setting.
That's exactly WHY it's trash in my opinion though. It's a flawed methodology. I don't want it matching my setting relative to anything. I want it low in the dark and bright in bright rooms or the sun to be legible and not more. It tries to do some meet-you-in-the-middle garbage and it just doesn't work well.

I found the threshold for the lowest brightness in pitch dark with Adaptive Brightness on to be 29%. That should be dark enough in dark rooms and outdoors it's readable to me. What percentages have you been trying?

I used a sensor app to see what light was reporting, and it was stable. I can only assume it's a bug.
For those who aren't sure - if the screen is on, and not moving, without any changes to ambient or direct light, every 20 or so seconds the screen will dim to a warmer colour, and then 20 seconds later will brighten to a whiter colour.

Yeah I had a feeling that's what people might be experiencing.

To add on to this thread, this is also occuring on my gen 1 Pixel.
Ever since I upgraded to 8.1 the adaptive display will brighten/darken while the phone is sitting still in a constantly lit room.
I also appear to have lost much of the granularity in the brightness selecting bar. The first 25% or so is as dim as it goes, and only after that does it begin to alter the brightness. Previously it would begin around 10% on the bar.
Additionally, the logic behind adaptive brightness seems to have gotten worse. I previously left my brightness setting always in the same place, and no matter where I was it was either dim enough (at night) or bright enough (during the day).
Real unhappy with this update.

Adaptive brightness - Darker than without the settings on?!

So yesterday I met a good friend of mine who apprently also has Google Pixel 2 XL and we compared to each other. The first panic I got is that somehow his camera was alot better than mine, but after a restart it was the same quailty and yeah...
but then we found out that our screens aren't the same, he had adaptive screen on and I didn't.
Somehow his adaptive screen was reacting alittle bit better than mine while mine changed like every angel I change which is abit annoying so I turned it off.
What we found out is that:
When you have adaptive screen on and on darkest brightness = You will get alot darker than without adaptive brightness on (Which also is on lowest) - Has anyone found that out?
Also the quesiton about the adaptive brightness, how has it been working for you? Does it react for the smallest change or.... Tell me your thoughts..

Adaptive brightness does make the screen brightness lower than when its toggled off, I noticed that on my nexus 6 too, and mine behaves normally, just like your friend's phone.

But whenever the brightness changes, does it tone up to the right brightness or it just "flashes" up to that brightness that is needed? Etc. Iphone tones up the brightness in that area you are in etc.

I'm not sure what you mean by tones up. It changes the brightness depending on the area. Just like any other phone..

As you can see the brightness, it slowly goes down dependning on the light in the room, as you can see it goes slowly down from etc 100 to 0. While pixel 2 goes straight to 100 to 0 without going down slowly... if you know what I mean now?

Got you..
There is a subtle transition on my pixel, the brightness change does not happen suddenly... It takes like half a second. Certainly not as slow as that of the Iphone though.

Oh yeah, Well I think im just not used to it like it was in Iphone basically. Could be that.

Your not alone, mine seems to be a quick brightness change...
