Really "expected standard"? What smartphones on the market today sport 10-finger multi touch and 1024x640 display?

Have to agree with not very impressed. Good luck using all 10 of your fingers at once. Some things are overkill to me...

The G2 will be out for the holidays, why not an EVO2
A 5mp camera??? I don't believe this one bit!
10 fingers.... lol. That almost seems like BS to me. It's pointless. Seems like manufacturers are trying to squeeze any inane feature into their phone to make it seems like it's the "next" big thing.
Do we really need a higher resolution with the same screen sizes? Everything we have now looks great at the current resolution. Maybe someone can explain the benefits of increasing the resolution?
what requires you to use 10 fingers? i cant find a single app that runs 3 point multitouch.. ... good luck with that..

I would love to see a higher resolution screen. However, I wouldn't go so far as to put 1080p on a smartphone. 1280x800 seems like a practical limit. For starters, the web browsing experience would be just like a desktop web browsing experience. And you could play 720p video. And hopefully, with Gingerbread, we could fit more widgets onto our home screens.
I have a net book that's 1024x600 and even that is limiting in its use.

I use more than 3-points using Nesoid to play NES games for several games. 10-point is overkill, though, IMO.
If you scroll down the article to the latest update, it reads:
"Last update : Jack Wong has just unveiled that he will abort the old screen resolution of 780×480 and replaced it with the a new 3,5-inch screen offering a iPhone 4 like resolution of 960×640 which will be called Meizu M9. Moreover the Meizu M9II will be equipped with a 4-inch screen with a resolution of 1024×640."
The real questions are how good is the GPU and is it a real HDMI out. Processor speed and RAM is the same as the Evo. At this point, the Evo's 4.3" screen is bigger than the M9II at 4", and the Evo has a better camera, a front-facing camera, the kick-stand (which I use plenty with my SlingBox), and a lot more accessories and development. I wouldn't buy this over an Evo just for the resolution.
Well whatever the summer 2011 Sprint/Android phone is, I do believe that it'll have a higher res screen. The Adreno 220 (which comes with the dual core 1.2 GHz 45nm Snapdragons due in the first half of 2011) supports up to 1280x800 but I doubt that we'll see that in anything but tablets. On phones we'll probably see the dual core CPU down clocked to 800 MHz - 1 GHz (which would still make it a lot faster than anything on the market now) and the same 1024x640 display as on that phone. Why 1024x640? All apps would scale pretty perfectly (same ratio as 800x480).

I disagree with a few things. Let's start with the web experience. Sure, having a desktop resolution means that you could see more of a web page... but with a 4-4.3" screen, you can't read text that small. Besides, you can just zoom out to see more. So I'm not too convinced there.
As for widgets, you can load as many as your launcher allows. HTC would fit more widgets if they were smaller. Same size as they would be if you increased the resolution but kept the same screen size. I think the limit we have now is fine simply because anything more would be really cluttered.
The Galaxy S phones can play 720p movies, but of course they are downscaled. But you still get the same level of detail. It's insane watching a 720p movie on my Epic. Can't imagine anything being sharper than that.
I mean... the iPhone 4 has a larger resolution than the iPhone 3GS... but the desktop experience is unchanged. Icons are the same size. Still need to zoom in to read small text. Etc etc...

I disagree here. It's not really about seeing more, it's about the clarity of small text (which gets easier to read at higher DPI's.
The iPhone 4's display is relatively small compared to the EVO's 4.3" but even at that size the extra DPI makes smaller text more readable on the iPhone 4 than on the EVO. I should know since I own both and have perfect vision.
4.3" w/ a 1024x640 resolution would be KILLER for web browsing and e-reading.

What's so funny about that? 1024x640 is the widescreen version of the iPhone 4's 960x640, and it's worth it from my use.
I would hope it would be a 720p screen not some off the wall resolution like that.

Surely this didn't need you to create a post, a simple Google for "vga resolutions" would bring you to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_Graphics_Array, if you don't know know the pixel resolution of the HTC One X to look the type up, then check it's spectifications.

Some SoCs and displays do not work well with downscaling, but seems worth a shot to take some of the load off the G3's GPU and should result in better battery life and a lot less heat, throttling of chipset and display. Local video playback barely leverages the GPU, so if folks are using that to measure battery life, that only works if that is the main use for the device. Apps (games in particular) and web content will leverage the GPU.
Catch would be how well the G3 display scales to 1080p. Will it look like a native 1080p display, or something funky?
I find 1080p on a 27" monitor to look good and the Note 3 5.7" display to look amazing. Seems IF the G3 can be used at a 1080p "native' res, performance should jump up big time- and STILL look great.
that's exactly what i thought and i posted same question on other theard, i hope it can be done so the batterylife be at least near g2/s5/z2/m8
All depends on the 801 and the display. IF the 801 treats the display as native 1080p and the display simply looks like a native 1080p (no image issues), it should be a huge improvement for anything that leverages the GPU. The display still is lighting all the pixels, but the GPU would have a big load removed- IF again the 801 "sees" the display as 1080p after setting to 1080p.
Looking forward to tests, or I will test myself- if the Verizon version can be rooted easily.
so anyone who got the phone please test this !
How would you go about doing that?

There are several apps in Play market that allow setting rooted devices to different display resolutions. it might work great with the 801 and the display and it might not. Most of the apps will first test the res and then let you cancel if not correct.

I have tried to change the resolution to 1080p with the app NOMone resolution changer but the UI is not shown well. It seems the G3 UI is designed to works in QHD resolution and the icons, widgets, etc are not shown correctly in a lower resolution. I attach an example.
From my understanding this does not change the native display which is shown on the screen but merely scales everything to a lower dpi. You are still pushing the same number of pixels.

Changing the DPI is not the same as changing the resolution. You're merely assigning a different number of pixels per UI element.

Interesting.. I never knew resolution could be changed. Besides changing the resolution, did you change the DPI? It needs to be changed proportionally in order for everything to be in place.
