Hi,
I plan to buy a Fire TV 2 to replace my current Android box.
I've seen posts about possible patched that have blocked root access/side loading.
Any truth in this yet? If I go get one today, is it likely to be rootable?
Thanks.
The latest version 5.0.3.1 is still rootable. We don't know yet if the next release, which has no indication of if or when it will be released, will block it.
No it's not been patched in England, successfully got root this afternoon
Make sure you order the proper USB cable ahead of time if you don't have it yet.
Good to know. Have 5 incoming from the states, hopefully I can update to 5.0.3.1 and root before it gets blocked.

You don't need to update, that's the current shipped firmware.
Excellent, I thought they were shipping with 5.0.3.0.

I am in the UK and pre-ordered a Fire TV box last year, which was then shipped early September (as soon as they were released here). However, in between pre-ordering it and receiving it, the issue of unrootable newer firmwares became apparent and for that reason, I haven't opened it yet.
What I am wanting to know is:
a) Will this UK unit have been shipped with an unrootable firmware version? I would normally open the packaging and plug it in to find out, but I want to keep it sealed in case it is preloaded with unrootable firmware so that I can sell it on eBay.
b) If the unit is unrootable and I decide to sell it on eBay, does it contain my Amazon account details or any other personal info? Obviously, I don't want this available to whoever buys it.
Thanks in advance for any relevant information.

a.) No FireTV ever reaching the European market (UK/Germany etc) is rootable by software at the moment.
There is the eMMC hardware method which can root it.
In case you go for this, make sure you block updates anyway, as the updates will blow a softfuse, which will prevent downgrading and setting up stuff like CWM, partially unlocked bootloader etc.
b.) Yes it will be per-registered to your Amazon account. Not sure if you have to enter your password.
isn't only firmware 51.1.4 with efuse not 51.1.3.0?
mine from germany (saturn) came with 51.1.3.0 but messed up with blocking ip in my router. so sold it.
if so might be emmc su hack be possible with 51.1.3.0 and start downgrade to 51.1.0 and gain prerooted update?

Yes,
I was on 51.1.4.0_user_514006420 and could still downgrade to 5.1.1x after doing the eMMC root.
The eFuse will be blown if your fireTV ever ran stock version 51.1.4.1_user_514013920 or later.
Thanks for the response. I lack the technical expertise to do a hardware mod so I guess I'm out of luck. What I was ultimately hoping to achieve was being able to flash a possible future ROM which supported different refresh rates (i.e. something based on Android 5 or Linux).

Hi,
i'm currently on firmware 51.1.3.0 and i got my FT just lying around here and want to use it.
So my question is, should i upgrade to the latest firmware and just use it or be patient until a root for my version is released because of the efuse stuff?
Is anyone working on a new root method atm?

I doubt anyone is working on rooting newer firmware, cause they already have their firmware rooted so I doubt they have interest in rooting the newer firmware. Not trying to speak for any devs that have worked on these devices, but that seems to be the way it goes, they have already accomplished their goal of rooting the device so if newer unrootable firmware gets released its not really a problem for them. I am predicting right now that unless a new firmware with major updates gets released that requires you to have stock firmware to update then no newer firmwares will ever get root. I could be wrong, but I doubt it so its really up to you.

I have no doubt somebody is working on it. These are self-challenged, self-motivated people. And Amazon threw down the gauntlet.
As to Raptor's first question, you have it. Why not use it?
cant block updates on my router and dont want to update past the fuse update... -.-
Has anyone updated to the new firmware for firetv does kodi still work on this new firmware

The latest just came out yesterday and changes haven't been posted (that I can see)
Why do you ask? If you're unrooted you have no choice but to take it and if you're rooted you don't have it to install...
I doubt any future updates will break kodi. Even though I always get it from the org, Im pretty sure amazon has it in the app store now (not specifically for aftv) but I still doubt after embracing on other devices they'll kill it for one. I could be dead wrong but like I said up top--what choice do you have?
Early days... but some users on AFTnews are reporting it to be working ok
Code:
aftvnews.com/amazon-fire-tv-update-51-1-5-0-and-fire-tv-stick-update-54-1-1-0-have-been-released/
You don't have to take the updates though. You can block them via your router. Actually thats a good idea until you can be sure everything is okay.
I have them blocked but i will unblock the updates just to get this update as it says ul be able to use usb in this udate hopefully they dont block sideloading as i really like kodi on my firetv so just wondering has anyone updated there firetvs
Hi, hoping I could get some help.
I just got a huawei watch and cannot get it to update. It is on version 1.3xxxx. When I try to update it, it says it's already the latest version. Hopefully I'm just overlooking something very obvious as right now I feel stuck in the mud. Thanks for your help in advance!
Same issue here! Own the watch from 4 days now.
Same for me
An idea ?
Ok, i updated my watch with success. I believe that the OTA don't work because my watch is a refurbished one and the OTA system think that my watch is already up to date.
Here's how to update, it's easy:
You have to do an adb sideload of the OTA files:
Tutorial here:
http://phandroid.com/2016/03/02/huawei-watch-marshmallow/
You have to flash this file first if you are stuck in LCB43B:
http://android.googleapis.com/packa...866b47.signed-sturgeon-MEC23L-from-LCB43B.zip
After the reboot, continue with:
https://android.googleapis.com/pack.../6bae896422cb963c01b479eea9838f1b1b0d705e.zip
After that update the OTA worked normally.
Hope this help.
Thanks for starting this thread! I think all the people stuck on older firmware are Canadians with refurbs from newegg (incl me)? However, I am not sure how being refurb has anything to do with it.
My watch did update once from the version it came with, but kept on saying its up-to-date after that. I guess flashing stock image is the only way to go.

The issue with flashing the stock image is that you have to unlock the bootloader, and after that it seems that you loose the warranty.
Better flashing OTA if you want to stay stock. I bought my refurb from newegg.ca too.

Same problem.
Then I took your advice and it worked out great, and without changing the bootloader, thank you so much ndompierre :good::victory:
I got my newegg refurb yesterday and could not force the OTA despite resetting and checking multiple times. This afternoon it updated to marshmallow.
Each time time it reboots, I check for updates. I am currently receiving my fourth update of the day.
I guess each security patch has to be downloaded separately. I'm up to August so far..
I am a bit confused by all the posts about this subject
I would like to unlock my phone, for future rooting, when everything is more stable, meanwhile I want to get OTA updates on the phone "automaticaly", is that possible
You can definitely unlock the bootloader and still receive OTA.
And for your first point, rooting is plenty stable already, so no need to wait for that. Though if you aren't well versed in fastboot or root upgrade processes, you should definitely read all the most recent guides on it to make your transition smoother.
Thank you :good:
I did my share of rooting with Samsung S1, S3 and S5
Then bougth an LG V10, had to buy a "IMAGE" from a Chinese guy, using Alibaba "paypal" in chinese, to be able to activate LTE 20
Have been quiet for a couple of years, and didnt really have the need to root to have the V10 doing what I wanted, but want to be able to root if I have too much free time

You will probably find this less confusing than Odin. But you need to read up on using latest SDK, adb, fastboot, etc.
We're now using Magisk to root and be able to use Paypal.

Thanks, I work with IT, and already used adb to enable LTE frequencies on my LG V10. And of course I have been reading about Magisk, but will wait for more stable versions

There's issues with Magisk and some other phones, but topjohnwu has a Pixel 2 I believe, so he tests on that.
Magisk for our phones is perfectly stable, the only issue is people don't like the dtbo image being edited to remove AVB 2.0/dm-verity.
My bootloader is unlocked on my XL 2 and I am on Verizon. I have yet to get the January OTA. I haven't gotten an OTA since I got the phone in October

Strange, there was at least an update in January
Nov, Dec and January .....I have had to flash the full image if all 3. No OTA has ever come to this device

You only unlocked the bootloader? Maybe because it is Verizon, the bootloader is supposed to to be locked!
I can't see that being the reason as I bought the phone from the Google store

Sounds strange, maybe you updated before OTA was available for Verizon...
In 2 weeks I get mine, going to unlock before any update, it was bought December, so it has at least one update missing...

You can buy the locked Verizon phone from the Google Store, but apparently you ordered the correct one (unlocked, carrier free). Devices on the Verizon network (both locked and unlocked) receive regular OTAs, so don't worry- the status of the bootloader has nothing to do with why your device hasn't received the update yet. The difference is having the unlocked variant, you don't have to use Verizon specific images, and you can change carriers at any time, including internationally. Usually with just a SIM card change.
The OTA updates are staged randomly and roll out over a couple of weeks. Your OTA will eventually come by itself. Sometimes people wait a month (or even longer). If you don't want to wait, then just download the OTA and sideload it. Every month, the new OTAs (and full images) are posted by Google. You are free to download and flash them. Instructions on how to do this are provided by Google at the top of the download page. You don't even need to be bootloader unlocked to sideload OTAs.

Thanks I know how to sideload or flash the full image but just was hoping I wouldn't have to again and again
Are your phones enrolled on the Android Beta Program ? My P2 was and I never got the Jan. Update till I Unenrolled from the beta program. Immediately afterwards I checked and Jan update was available.
