You won't be able to flash stock OTA's unless you unroot through your SuperSU app and reinstall your stock recovery and relock your bootloader, unless your phone is S off , if your currently on a custom recovery.
Have you done any other modifications other than root? Like Xposed framework or the system write protection mod for Kit Kat?
---------- Post added at 05:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 05:20 AM ----------
And yes , you'll lose root but you can quickly gain it again after you update by flashing a custom recovery again and reflashing SuperSU from your custom recovery and "boom" your rooted again. I've rerooted mine several times and it only takes a few minutes.

Unroot using voodo before install of new OS

Does anyone know if I use voodoo OTA rootkeeper to temp unroot my verizon galaxy nexus (toro) and install the new OS jellybean will I loose the root.
If I can do this will it save all my data and stuff and just update my present operating system without having to do a factory reset.
Are you on stock or a custom ROM? If you're going to flash a custom ROM to get to Jelly Bean, you're going to lose everything. It's a clean install of the OS, and custom ROMs are pre-rooted.
Temp unrooting and then wiping the OS to install a new one makes no difference
I am stock rom.
I won't loose what is on my SD card right?
I just flashed stock jellybean ota update using cwm an was on ICS with root an still didn't lose anything, you don't have to unroot to update, I just reinstalled super su after ota update an my root came back an I didn't even need voodoo, you will only lose all your apps when you flash the full jellybean image, ota updates are fine an you keep everything from before.

If you've already unlocked the bootloader to root, then no you won't lose your SDcard. Custom recoveries used to flash ROMs don't wipe the /sdcard/ path.

Well his situation will be different with a CDMA model because he has to flash a custom ROM to do it, meaning he's wiping the entire OS.

Updating(OTA) to 4.3 with root?

I have looked around and can't seem to get a straight answer about this. I have a stock rooted gn2, if i update over the air will it brick it? At the moment i have the att updater frozen with titanium backup. Any insight would be greatly appreciated, happy holiday!
where have you been searching? This has been covered dozens of times...
sorry
could you possibly provide a link sir?
generally speaking you can NOT take/install any OTA update when you are rooted...most OTA updates wont install if a custom recovery is detected.
99% of the time it wont work, .09% of the time it might install but you will have all sorts of issues, and .01% of the time it will work..
I think that pretty much covers it; you should probably just be patient and wait until the dev's incorporate it into a custom rom, and then you wont have to unroot to "enjoy" what ever the wonderful features are that ATT was so kind to include in their update..
And the install checks for stock system
You can install if you have stock rom. Root doesn't matter. My phone was rooted with stock room and twrp recovery. I just flashed stock recovery back. I had my superuser integrated in system partition. After Ota, i upgraded superuser apk. It then disabled Knox and download latest su binary.
So successful update with root preserved. Pm me of you need help

WARNING :
If you take the official OTA to 4.3 while root is present...you WILL trip the KNOX counter in your boot loader.
And if you root after an official 4.3 update you WILL trip KNOX anyway..
My .02....DO NOT UPDATE....
Stay rooted on the old bootloader and flash a custom 4.3 rom.....g
Wife is getting a new AT&T note 2 on the 24th (it already shipped). I would assume it doesn't have the OTA on it yet. Can you just reject the OTA when it arrives? Or will it try to install automatically on the new phone. Any way to prevent that until I can get my hands on it (have time tio mess with it).
Anyone try flashing a rom After ota update?
Did you thank your Developer today?

I too have a stock rooted 4.1.2. OTA fails as root present, got that. All I need is a stock 4.3 root. I have read several posts and still unclear as to what to do. I have either missed it or just not found the answer.
Do I need to unroot via SuperSU? then OTA? Odin flash a stock ROM?
Please don't bash as I am only seeking an answer. And any help is greatly appreciated!

I had stock rooted 4.1.2 with cwm as my recovery. I did the ota update. After the update, cwm wanted to fix root but couldn't. Essentially I lost root. Next, I re-rooted with CF-Auto-Root. I then installed SuperSU from play store which disabled Knox. Using GooManager I flashed TWRP. The last issue was wifi wasn't working. I used Odin to flash this file: http://d-h.st/OYC (unzip and use the tar in Odin). Wifi restored. Overall I like this update. It's faster and smoother.
Having said all this, I do not recommend anyone use this method. It's much cleaner to unroot then update. Or better yet, as suggested before, use one of the custom 4.3 roms.

I noticed the OTA did not work on my nine as I got the "unable to update" after the OTA downloaded. I initially rooted via the CF-Auto flash.
Just curious as to next step.

So you had no trouble flashing TWRP? I went back to 4.1.1 from Skynote, OTA'd 4.1.2 and was going to flash another ROM but my wife got my phone the next morning to play slots and she accepted the 4.3 official update before I woke up. I did root with CF Auto and disabled Knox, but was wondering if Goomanager would work.
The next question is can we flash some ROMS with the rooted OTA 4.3?
Geeve
Is there a pre-rooted stock 4.3 for the i317 AT&T available?

Goomanager worked fine. No problems with twrp either.
As far as flashing on from ota 4.3, I'm not brave enough yet.

Nope, pretty much as stock as you can get plus root. OTA failed but I assume reason being the root... but I'm a newbie on this stuff.

Then the next question I have is if you are using the stock recovery? I was using cwm on stock rooted 4.1.2. When I did the ota, the phone rebooted into cwm. Cwm asked if I wanted to do the update. I selected yes. When it completed, the Samsung installer gave a failed to install message, but cwm showed that it completed and wanted to fix root. It couldn't fix since I was unrooted at this point. I rebooted into 4.3 non-rooted. Re-rooted...etc.
I want to say again that I don't recommend anyone follow this procedure. I'm just trying to describe how I solved my own mess and hopefully answer any questions.

[Q] Can you install a custom ROM without being S-OFF?

I've recently unlocked my bootloader and rooted my HTC One M8, and I noticed that you have to pay in order to S-OFF your device. I wanted to know if you can install a custom ROM without being S-OFF?
You can but as far as I'm aware it's only up to 4.4.3. I'm using Sinless Rom 4.4.3 but really want to go 4.4.4. I did install a couple but had no WiFi connection on them I'm going to s-off with Sunshine soon when I've got the money. Hopefully a dev will prove me wrong and say you can install 4.4.4 without being s-on. It could be that my firmware is really outdated so in which case I'd have to go back to stock and update it. Anyway hope my gibberish helped in some way

I'm trying to understand what you are saying here. What is only up to 4.4.3? Stock M8's have been updated not only to 4.4.4, but to 5.0 (Lollipop).
If you are on a 4.4.3 ROM, and going to 4.4.4 breaks WiFi, you in fact have outdated firmware.
Return to stock ROM and stock recovery and install official OTAs up to current (5.0 Lollipop) to run the current custom ROMs, without having to s-off.

Yes and No.
You can flash any custom ROMs meant for the M8, meaning they will flash. But some things might be broken (extreme long boot times, broken WiFi) if you "firmware" is not up to date.
Reason for that is that when going between major updates (Android builds 4.4.2 to 4.4.2, etc.) HTC has been updating a collection of modules (aside from the ROM itself) commonly called "firmware" that includes hboot, radio, WiFi, and other stuff. Many of these partitions are write protected. Theefore, they can only be updated either by official means (such as OTA updates) or otherwise you need s-off to "manually" update them.
One easy question, is your phone already running stock Lollipop? If so, you can just flash any custom ROM meant for the M8.

Thanks for clearing that up for me, I only said 4.4.3 as I came from 4.4.2 originally. I did suspect my firmware had something to do with it hence why I said hopefully someone could prove me wrong and so they have?

No need to return to stock recovery and OTA, then. Your firmware is up to date.
Just flash the custom ROM of your choice. S-off not required.

SGH T999 custom rom installation

I'm running stock android 4.3 on my galaxy s3 tmobile, factory unlocked, rooted. As my firmware is T999UVUEOH1, there is a damn knox bootloader which trips when I try to flash something. Please tell me that
1.can I revert my bootloader to a previouse version?
2.can I revert my android to a previouse version?
3.is it possible to install a custom firmware in this bootloader?
4.if 3 is "yes", what is the best method to install cyanogenmod on my phone?
Please answer.thanks a lot in advance.

But yeah before I edited I said if you're running stock 4.3 rooted, to follow the instructions in this thread
But then I finished full reading instead of skimming. I've never had a problem with Knox as SU disabled it.
1 and 2 can be achieved by flashing the latest stock ROM from sammobile.com with odin.
Yes, you can install a custom ROM with the current bootloader but you need to flash a custom recovery before installing a custom ROM as all custom ROMs can only be installed with a custom recovery.
Easiest way to install Cyanogen would be to flash TWRP via Odin. Once TWRP has been flashed and is operational, copy a custom ROM and Gapps to the phone's internal memory or micro SD card. Boot into TWRP, wipe data, cache, system, flash the custom ROM, flash Gapps, reboot.

Help downgrading from 5.1.1 to 4.4.4

A few days ago I bought a note 4 with 5.1.1 installed. I followed the guide and unlocked the bootloader and rooted. I have been reading for the past few days since I got the phone and could not find a definite answer. What I really want is 4.4.4 with stock kernel and root.

Go to sammobile and download the firmware you're looking for. Flash in ODIN.
I'm not sure the unlocked bootloader will survive the downgrade and I don't think there's an unlock path for KitKat.
I don't care about having the bootloader unlocked I can always upgrade back to 5.1.1 and unlock it again.
I know when Samsung released the 5.1.1 upgrade that it broke the 4.4.4 downgrade path. I don't want to get stuck bricked on 4.4.4
4.4.4 flash odin did not work
i attempted to load 4.4.4 in odin and I got sw rev check fail aboot fused 2 binary 1 is there any other way to install stock 4.4.4 firmware
Just curious, why would you want to go back to 4.4.4?
4.4.4 downgrade
I really just prefer 4.4.4 xposed works perfectly and it runs so smooth. Hotspot is also easy to get working.
You can't downgrade. Tried that many times, but always failed.

If your bootloader is unlocked and your on 5.1.1 bpa1 then this is what i did i love kitkat and i use it as my base rom just figuered out how to get it yesterday been sesrching for a week now. Download the nj5 modem for flashing with odin. Get two roms, google is your friend you can find it
Definitive rom 1.9 and
Omega 1.2
Flashing Omega and back up the boot partition containg the kernel.
Then flashing the Definitive rom and restore the boot partition and boom wifi and fata working perfect. Camera working perfect. I havent found any bugs. Super easy. Ill make a thread If i can. :fingers-crossed:
