Hello XDA Community,
I got my first smartphone in middle school. It was my first phone. The T-Mobile Shadow (Windows Mobile). I was 13 then. Now I'm 18, and in College. I spent my free time in doing the easy mods the community created. I got the MyTouch 3g as soon as it came out and started flashing roms. Then, the Nexus One came out and I immediately came up with a scheme to convince my sister to take my old phone so I could get the Nexus One. Anyways, I got it in 10th grade and life was sweet. I was happy. I became a "crack flasher". So I had the phone for a while and decided then to get the Galaxy S3.
As for the Galaxy S3...
I don't know about this phone. I've had it for less then a year. Obviously, I became an HTC fanboy growing up with HTC phones. My friends all got HTC phones. We all flashed roms and enjoyed ourselves. But when this phone came out, I had to make a hard decision. The removable battery, expandable storage (and T-Mobile availability) made it a good choice. It was unlike the HTC One X in those regards. (My friend got that phone) The HTC One just came out. I want it now.
Why?
Well I suppose I'm not that happy with the S3. I got a 64gb micro sd for it. I thought I could replace my ipod. I was so wrong. I hate all of the music players on Android. I regard music too highly to be happy with the Android music experience. Anyways, that's not going to change with any new Android phone. I've learned to live with that. The screen is nice, but it doesn't compare to other displays I've seen. I guess it's because I keep the DPI kind of low and expect crispness? The LG Nexus 4 has an amazing screen also and works very well. The biggest thing though, that I really dislike about this phone, is the build quality. I hate the plastic feeling. I hate the gloss and fingerprints. It feels so cheap. And, the UI isn't even liquid smooth. I've flashed a lot. I guess I'm comparing it to the Nexus 4 now, as I've played with that a bit. I've got very close to really quick, but I'm not satisfied. I paid a lot of money and invested my hopes in this technology but I'm not pleased.
I've found that throughout the time I've owned this phone, I've thought a lot of different things. I've considered Windows Phone, Blackberry, and even iPhone, just because I want something sexy that works well. But I'm an Android man.
I don't know if this is because deep down, I'm an HTC fanboy. Or if it's because I'm a Google fanboy and love Nexus phones (or a combination?). i hate these second thoughts I'm getting after such a long time of having the phone. It's not long enough to justify an upgrade. Am I cursed with being unimpressed forever growing up with so many innovations around me?
Do share your thoughts for me on this. I just wanted to share,

We all have our wish lists for that single, perfect phone. I know I certainly do. Whether it's the IPhone's/HTC's/Sony's great hardware/build quality, or the pure Android experience offered with Nexus, or Samsung's wide array of software features/apps, the "perfect" one.
I love technology and I love my smartphone. I love rooting, flashing, trying out a thousand different things on my phone. But why should I care about it (the smartphone) so much? Of course I have invested lots of money into my smartphone, but it's not healthy to be consumed so much by smartphone. I know I'm going a bit off-topic, but really I'm just trying to tell you, just get a phone for what it really was for, to call, to text. I know apps are so convenient nowadays because we have everything in a device, but sometimes it's not bad to do it old-fashioned.
Get a phone that you will use now and a while. Get a phone that can serve its purpose. While a phone may have many features or many apps, I highly doubt a student or a professional will find use for it every single hour of the day. Most of us I assume probably aren't developers, and even as hobbies, it shouldn't consume much time.

Back when you were content with your phone(s), things were growing much slower than they are now. At the current rate that phones are being released, it's guaranteed that there will be a new and better phone that you will want within the first year. Companies don't want you to be content with a phone for too long. I bet Samsung has better features right now that could have been added to the s4, but they want to save those for the s5.

I agree on almost all of your points. I've had my share of android phones (G1, Moto Charm, G2x, and now Galaxy S3) and I'm beginning to become disappointed with the experience of this phone compared to that of a newer android device or even an iPhone and it's been only 8 months since I've purchased it. I don't quite agree with you on the music issue as I'm a music junkie myself with a 7 gig library but poweramp has transformed my android music listening experience into a great one.
Back to the S3, I've found that the battery life and build quality have been very sub par for me. Plus the pentile display is nothing to rave about either. Being only a sophomore in high school and tied to my family's family plan on T-Mobile, I really don't have an option to switch. I desperately want a Note 2 or Nexus 4 but financially I'm screwed. Even with the Nexus 4's low price I'd have to wait for the rumored 32gb version for storage reasons but that'd set me back $400 for shipping and tax. The S3 isn't even worth that anymore used.
All in all, I feel as if I should've waited for the Note 2 or Nexus 4 before getting the S3. Don't get me wrong, it's an awesome device that's suits all of my needs fine but there are definitely better choices out there from the perspective of a critical tech junkie such as myself.

You can see the phones I've had in my signature, all 3 Nokias were indestructible...the old flip phone, I threw it at a wall and it exploded into a million pieces, put it back together and the thing still works...man they really knew how to build phones...
The Nexus One was a great phone. I had to drop it and break the internal screen (oddly enough the outer glass didn't crack at all.). But it felt great in my hand, it was very solid and built well.
The Nexus S was kind of disappointing I have to say...Almost completely the same specs and I felt it wasn't built as well. I sold it for my GS-II
That stupid thing was the retarded stepchild of the S-II fleet...the poor developers were stuck with GB while T-Mobile picked its ass holding back all the updates. ****ty screen for sure, visible display flaws, poor PPI, cheap feeling...I never wanted to get a Samsung again. But I did...
The S-III was a huge improvement to say the least...I'm very satisfied with it. It does feel cheaper than say my old N1, but I think it feels a lot better than the NS or t989. Honestly with a screen protector and an otterbox commuter case, it's just fine. And as long as I have my Cyanogenmod, I don't care what software the thing comes with . Barring anything crazy coming out anytime soon, I don't see myself getting another phone until this falls apart.
In my eyes, as cliche as it may be, since my most important factors are Cyanogenmod and otterbox (or equivalent) case availability, all I care about are the specs. I sure hope screens stop ****in growing though...this one is almost too big as it is...
BTW: I sold my t989 on eBay for $350, all I had to do was unlock the thing, instantly increases it's value by a good $150. Always unlock your phone before you sell it, it will sell for much more.

Referring to the music, my library exceeds 30 gigs and I've just found it irritating to sync and manage. Not a huge issue though. I think we're on the same page though. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks that way about the device. The thing is that I can get the HTC One spending all of my current savings, but then of course that means no new phone in the coming months. And Later this year there are just too many rumors about this "X Phone" and the new nexus... Idk.

I see where you're coming from. I got a huge Seido case for my S3, and then took it off after about a month. I dropped it afterwards (about 9 feet onto my subwoofer, long story) and nothing happened luckily. I like it better without a case. I guess looks would be a smaller factor then. Maybe, I should just snap that huge case back on and try to hold out until the holiday season... Idk lol. Thanks for the reply. :good:

Companies are getting us used to crave new things within very short periods of time, an example of this is the fact that new phones, tablets or any kind of electronics pop every 4 to 6 months, which is done to satisfy our non-basic needs of always having the latest gadgets, and to create more profits or economic growth for the typical capitalist corporations. We've been spoiled to have new tech very fast, which is in a way bad as this craving (or addiction?) can easily go out control and we can be left bored with very new gadgets in our hands or even go into debt t o satisfy this craving for more. This spoiling behavior makes us feel the need to want more or not to be satisfied with what we have and we can quickly become slaves of technology if we dive too deep into it, hence what you are feeling when you say that you are growing unimpressed with so many innovations or not satisfied or please with the current technology. Perhaps I'm going a bit of topic, but is worth to be aware where we stand as consumers and the invisible ways corporations play with our "addictions" or "needs" for the latest.
I love the looks of both the Nexus 4 and the HTC one better than my Galaxy S3, but no removeable battery and no expandable memory? Get serious? I can deal with a plasic back, the price I paid tells me it's not cheap! Anyways, I don't agree with anything else you said. This phone was awesomly fast out of the box and now I have a custom ROM that even improved on that. Plus, I prefer Samoleds although I admit Samsung could do better. A 1080p screen with Super Amoled + with a different pentile arrangement would be nice. My next phone is most likely to be the Note 3, Samsung is just at the edge of innovation right now, too much so for me not to buy. Can't wait!

I would say my dream phone would be:
-1080p 4.75in (no bigger, no smaller) super-fancy spaceage whatever screen that can actually get its brightness as low as possible at night, and stays clear and readable in direct sunlight...
-1.5ghz+ ultra-energy efficient 4+ core processor.
-2GB+ RAM
-Micro SD card
-16+ GB internal storage
-Removable back cover and battery
-NFC, Barometer, compass, so many sensors I can start a weatherstation lol.
-Vibration with adjustable intensity from barely felt to earthquake magnitude.
-Latest Cyanogenmod stock, with options to auto-update to stable, M, or nightly releases (a guy can dream...)
-A rear camera that can shoot 1080P video and instant-shutter, no noise high quality pictures, and a front camera capable of doing an HD Skype call.
-2 front-firing speakers (one on bottom, one on top that doubles as earpiece); a rear-facing mic for the camera, and a bottom-facing mic for phone calls
-Capacative buttons underneath screen (menu, home, back in that order)

I would pay a good $450 for that phone.
Can't forget the holographic keyboard.
Scores over 10,000 on quadrant, I saw a stock HTC one today score 9133 on quadrant running stock 4.1.2. That was impressive.

The power of a desktop computer, specifically i7 3770k, gtx 580 sli x3, 24gb ram, 256gb sd, all in a sexy Nokia n9 form, running windows 8.
Thats my dream phone. Seems realistic enough.

Get a cerulean n9. Though the s3 hardware is very much superior to the n9, the n9 just wins hands down IMHO.
I have both phone and u would pick the n9 over the s3 any day of I didn't water damage the power switch on my n9.. Grrr Seattle rain..

Those specs would definitely be amazing haha. But yeah, I did end up getting the HTC one, and I think I'm happier. I havent even rooted yet and I'm still content. It just works so well. Everything is so clean and sexy.

Hey guys, so I'm going Tablet hunting and have come down with 2 leading candidates, the Pipo M7 Pro, a Chinese Tablet. or the Nexus 7 (2013).
The only thing that worries me is the development. As a Flashaholic I'd like a tablet with decent dev support, and I haven't seen any dev support for the Pipo M7 Pro.
Now, the Nexus 7 Multi touch and GPS/random reboot issues have me here at bay, making the debate a bit more intense.
I'll probably use my tablet for reading, school related work or gaming/listening to music (rarely though, I'll probably have my Galaxy Nexus for that which works fine really(or a Nexus 5 by the time it comes out ))
Any recommendations/Opinions/Point of views will be appreciated.

Nexus 7, most of not all the "issues"with it are a very vocal minority, overflowing a small problem, of it were half as big an issue as they try to make ir to bbr, ir would be all the blogs

Very real, though. And, to some degree, acknowledged by the powers that be at Google...

It's the luck of the draw. It may only effect a few percent, but over the multi thousands sold, it's a percentage that needs to be taken seriously.
If you purchase one, be sure that it's from a seller offering a good return/exchange policy.

Been thru quite a few "shows" ... the TF101, the 2012 Nexus 7 & now the 2013 Nexus 7...
I still don't hesitate a bit to buy one. Heck, I even wish there is a refurbished sales right now.

Chinese stuff is just not up to par as brand name stuff yet. Their specs look great, benchmarks are great, but in reality they are far far apart when you use both side by side.
I have a Ifive X2 with a RK3188 and it lags like hell, battery is good, screen is nice, but real world performance is just awful. Since I got my Note 8 from repair, I dont use the X2 at all anymore.
For the small price difference it just makes no sense to consider Chinese stuff vs a Nexus 7.

This Pipo M7 Pro isn't a fastest tablet in the world and after a bit of customizations is in real world usable. The screen is impressive, good battery, very good Wi-Fi and the firmware is stable. I don't regret my (old ) Nexus 7
M7 is great for browsing internet, reading books and multimedia but not too suited for video games.
I am satisfied but not enthusiastic.

Pipo is a pretty good Chinese company, we're not just talking about those ripoff chinese companies you find on Ebay, and I have used Rockchip based devices and can vouch for them, they're not as bad as you say.
So your "no sense to consider Chinese stuff vs a Nexus 7" is kind of stereotypical and not really reliable

If you aren't in a hurry to buy a tablet, I'd wait to see what the TegraTab and the LG G Pad 8.3 end up being like. That's what I'm going to do when I return/exchange my N7 flo for the 3rd time. I'm on my 2nd one now, so hopefully the 3rd try will be the the charm! I expect both those options to be more expensive, but if either of them is within 100 of the 32gb N7 flo (as long as it's 32gb or 16gb with a microsd), then I'll probably give it a shot.

If you absolutely want a tablet right now, I can't recommend the N7 in good conscience. Having had two with the same exact issue(multitouch), I would say the odds are pretty good that you'd get one with the same issue. That said, if the N7 is what you like and you don't mind potentially returning/exchanging it, get one. Just be sure to buy from somewhere with a good return/exchange program. I've had pretty good luck with Best Buy so far, as well as Amazon. I'd choose Best Buy if there's one near you for ease of returning/exchanging, i.e. no wait time.

I have one of the latest and greatest Chinese tabs as I write in my post.
Yes they are better then what they used to be but they still lack in some aspects. These tabs using the RK3188 chip in real life are just not want the benchmarks want you to believe. The Chinese keep cutting corners where they shouldn't and it shows. So yeah it looks like you get a lot for 200$ but when you use it you understand why its cheaper.
It's no surprise that all the high end Chinese tabs and phones end up using Qualcomm and Samsung CPUs and cost almost the same as brand name stuff.

They are not, but fans of Chinese stuff like to go crazy about them and use them to compare with brand name products. If I see two products with similar scores I would expect similar function but clearly it's not the case.

I had Asus Infinity TF700T before, but I was very disappointed about the build quality and the lagging of the device. I hated that tab every moment. I didn't install custom rom because it required unlocking the device and loosing the warranty. So I sold it and bought Pipo M7pro.
I like the screen and size of the tablet and this is much faster and smoother than Asus TF700. Also the build quality is better than on Asus, which had loose screen even repaired three times for warranty.
Multi window feature is pretty cool! Check the video from youtube.

So after reading some of your messages and doing some more research on my own. I've decided to wait until October, if the Nexus 7 multitouch problems have been resolved (they're addressing the problem at their warehouses/manufacturers or fixed it on an update) I'll buy it, if not, then Pipo M7 Pro will have to be my choice.
Really like the N7 but what use is there buying it when chances are that I'll get a broken Tablet, no, I can wait, I trust Google that they'll resolve this soon, it isn't the first time they've encountered a problem with manufacturers, like the N4 for example, with the infamous exploding back(I did think it was spontaneous and comical so I did have a laugh about it, hopefully the owners got a replacement though)

I think the Chinese phones and tablets may have some issues but then again so do other phones. In my opinion it is best to wait for a very comprehensive review before you buy. And only buy from a near-by supplier that is willing to take it back if it is faulty, do not buy direct from China because it is unlikely to get your money back, plus the shipping costs and customs would make it uneconomical to return items.
For example, a year ago I bought a Chinese phone, with superb specifications. It seems to have two faults (at least). First, it is very fussy with the SD card, many applications do not work with it and especially GPS Navigation applications that store huge maps on the SD card. Secondly the GPS receiver is either broken or simply very, very bad. My dedicated Garmin GPS, my wife's iPhone4, my son's Samsung S3 : they all lock on to the GPS almost instantly. The Chinese phone needs to be absolutely stand still for like 5-10 minutes before it can lock on. Completely useless in the car for example, I have to stop the car, and then wait 5-10 minutes so it can lock.
Someone said above that high-end Chinese phones and tabs use Qualcomm and Samsung parts and not their own. Well, no **** Sherlock! That qualifies as one of the most idiotic statements I have read. Every single electronic device in the world uses parts made by various/hundreds of other manufacturers. This has always been the case. I would not expect the Pipo M7 Pro to have components made by Pipo - and it does not matter anyway. My Sony VAIO laptop does not use a "SONY" CPU, or chipset, or GPU, or memory, or capacitors, or resistors, actually I doubt that a single component inside my laptop is actually made by Sony, except perhaps the badge!!!

The only issue I have at all with the 2013 is a delayed wake when using a magnetic cover. That's obviously a software issue, as leaving Bluetooth on fixes the problem.
Oh and Zilliman, your Chinese phone sounds like my old Samsung Captivate. That thing had the worst GPS I've ever seen. Developers worked hard to fix it but it was never very good. Completely useless even when walking, let alone driving.

Here's a problem for those with N7 Pro : the speakers crackle at high volume.

OK I guess finally I may have something to help after getting so many helps from this nice forum.
I live in China and I'd say I'm quite familiar with Chinese tablets and nexus devices. (proud owner of both types) I've yet to find a Chinese native brand tablet that marches either Nexus 7's build quality or OS stability. (always search for teardown pics before decision) Usually they have small problems here or there, but you don't have a bug list and workaround thread in a good forum simply because they don't have enough users.
There are worth buying Chinese tablets though. They are usually much cheaper than Nexus 7, don't have fatal problems, have good user base and forums to post workarounds of those small issues, and recently they start to come in so many varieties of screen size. (there used to be a time when they are mainly 7" widescreen, before the mighty Nexus 7's arrival.)
IMHO if you prefer 7" tablet, just grab the new Nexus 7. If not, don't buy M7 Pro for the following reasons:
1 Rockchip is not as friendly to devs as its rival SoC company Allwinner. I can find unofficial CM10.2 on AllWinner platform but I find almost nothing on Rockchip;
2 RK3188 seems strong, but in practice it's not a good chip for HD "Retina" display due to poor design choice of a single channel 32bit memory controller, which results a memory bandwidth that nearly kills GPU performance. BTW that's just a fraction of bandwidth compared to the new Nexus 7. I heard the GPU performance is so poor that even stock launcher can't go butterly smooth.
However RK3188 + a 1024*768 display is fine.
Summary: don't buy RK3188+HD display like the M7 Pro; strongly recommend new Nexus 7
correction: No Chinese SoC performs well on 1080p display. I'd guess 720p is the limit.

I am in the market of purchasing my first Nexus device and have been looking at the Nexus 7 (2013) model but have concerns. After doing a lot of research about the various problems with the Nexus 7 the ones in particular that caught my attention are the touch screen issues, random reboots (this one is my biggest concern) and gps issues. How widespread are these issues? What is the likelihood I'll get unlucky and get a "bad" Nexus 7 tablet? I've read in various places people getting 2-4 replacements and still having the same problems. Is this isolated to a minority of people or do most Nexus 7 (2013) tablets have these issues? Is it a rare event to find a 100% functional Nexus 7? Should I wait until after the holiday season when new batches are made and hopefully have been fixed? Should I buy it all?
I have been itching to get a Nexus device for awhile. I currently own a Galaxy sIII on Verizons network and hate the fact Verizon delays android updates so I am looking to jump ship to a pre-paid plan in the future and more than likely going with a Nexus phone but want to experience a Nexus device (Nexus 7) before doing so. My contract is not up until July of 2014. I am at a point where either its Nexus or Apple. I like to be current on updates. Any help/insight would be greatly appreciated.

I can't speak for others, but my Nexus tablet had no major problems. The only problem I experienced was that I could't install the second update, but I was going to root it anyway so I just flashed a stock version and have had no problems since. Even for those who had problems, there have been updates that fixed the GPS, multi-touch etc. I say that there is probably a 80% chance of getting a perfect tablet with no problems. I am pretty sure ( don't really know ) that Google has fixed most of the problems that some people have experienced. I am positive that our tablets will get the 4.4 KitKat update so you will have the latest technology. If you want a bigger tablet, I would get the Nexus 10 that is rumored to come out with the Nexus 5. Personally, I'm saying that this tablet is pretty amazing and that you should get it while you can.
I've bought my Nexus 7 LTE 2 weeks ago and don't have those problems. But I also seem to be relatively lucky when it comes to electronics. My advice would be to either buy one at a later date when more users report success with regards to the issues. Or to buy it from a reputable place where you can easily get it replaced or a refund.
Also, keep in mind that people having issues with electronics are far more likely to make threads and posts about these issues and be vocal about them than people who are content with their device.
My touch screen is still kinda meh. It register as if I hold the screen when I just tap sometimes (like 1/25 time ish?). Also when I scroll like 1mm, it doesn't start to respond until I scroll a little bit more. Kinda annoying when I just want to scroll a very tiny bit. Not too big of a deal but it does get slightly annoying. Other than that, nothing was bad right out of the box. I think it's worth a shot.

Hi OP, I understand your concerns and I would love to share my experiences with you!
I had a Galaxy Nexus with Verizon, and jumped ship because Verizon only had their 3G network at the time and it was painfully slow, it made AT&T look really good.
The Nexus 7 2013 I got, the first one was pretty bad. It would freeze occasionally (also random reboots) and had a cluster of dead pixels and another dead pixel off some random place. After I got that unit swapped, this N7 works almost flawlessly- there is still some of the random phantom taps but not as much. It's enough so I can live with it.
If memory serves me right, the best way to buy it would be through Best Buy. I am a little leery of support through the Google play store and I know with best buy I can be there to get it swapped out on the same day if need be. You will not save on sales tax from the play store so I would opt for better sales support and buy it from Best Buy, or any other retailer carrying the device.
Other than that I think you will be very happy with it. I would avoid AT&T like the plague- I had their service for 3 days (cancelled today) and they charged me an ETF for cancelling- I had to call 4 different people and chat with a rep before I could get it resolved. Your best bet would be through T-Mobile. Their CS support has been a lot better than AT&T. But remember, T-Mobile service only works well in the cities. If you're out on the highway you will be stuck with EDGE or domestic roaming. AT&T has far better speeds on major highways but their CS experience really cheesed me and turned me away from their service. They even scratched my SIM card tray! But I'll step off my soap box for that.
I think these issues are waning, it might just be early production kinks. We've seen it in iPhone 4s when they came out with the incomplete gluing of the screen causing yellowing for example. I can say production wise, the 2 tablets I had were perfectly fine.
Coming from a Note 2, it's refreshing to be with stock android. Touchwiz just eats up RAM like it's nothing.
I'd say go for it. It's nice to have a tablet with cellular access.

I agree with others on the touch screen. It's has so much lag and just not that responsive. I got the LTE version and I'm very disappointed.

Hi, I got mine yesterday. The 32gb version. Unlocked, flashed custom recovery and rooted in less than 3 minutes. Coming from HTC this is refreshing. I was tired of going MacGyver on HTC devices for the sake of unlocking them.
After 24h of use, no touchscreen issues. Far as I remember I had one reboot but I think it was on purpose due device update (didn't notice the reboot warning maybe). I'm very happy with it, fast, sleek, all functional for now and I hope it stays that way.
A friend of mine also ordered his recently and had 0 issues as well. I think these latest batches are coming out much better.

I disagree completely on this point. My experience with Best Buy customer support has been awful. They will give you a hard time about any issues that are not readily apparent (for example, with the touch screen issue, they would use the device and say "Well, the touch screen is working fine for me" even if you tell them it's an intermittent issue). Google has been fantastic about customer service. I went through four or five Nexus 7 2012's due to the screen lift issue and they never gave me a hard time. Additionally, they offer the full support for a full year. For example, my Nexus 4 (that I bought on launch day) was having a new issue recently and they replaced the device without needing to go through LG support.
Mine was free so it's kind of hard to complain (sister won it, has and ipad and didn't want the nexus too), but I'll give it a shot:
It's a nice light device, looks slick, works well, seems fast (for my use at least), fantastic screen, and battery life seems to be really good.
Great for reading books, great for playing games and it's small enough to slip into any pack.
Live wallpaper is cooler than stink (at least I think so). Graphics are great all around.
The micro USB is a nice bonus over anything apple puts on theirs and the ability to add storage though it is brilliant. I wish I had more than 16 GB (more like 11 after os usage) but I didn't pay anything for it so; Meh....16 gb will do fine. I can always add an app and a usb stick if I want to carry lots of movies, music or documents with me.
People complain about the sound from the speakers sometimes, but what do you want from a "micro thin" 7" tablet? They're better than my iPhone and better than my wife's iPad. I'll get Bluetooth speakers if I want more than they offer. They work fine for most use for me or I use earbuds. It's a tablet, not a stereo...
It works fine for skype and Wifi video calls as is. Sound is fine when I'm talking to my little girl from the hotel. I even find myself turning it down sometimes.
The only problems I've had with it was a slightly "wonky" touchscreen. Very infrequently it would miss a touch or skip on a drag. More prevalent when I wasn't holding it (ie; sitting on the table, etc). Games like Angry Birds were painful to play because of skipping drags. Damned birds flinging everywhere! (lol)
Rooted it and installed sfhub's TS-10 driver and now it's perfect. Little bit of lag on a drag, but nothing serious. Might matter if you're a big tablet "gamer" and need speed in shooter games or similar.
Sometimes I do find myself wishing for a bigger screen, but not very often. It's fine for what it is. A bigger screen would add size and weight and that would ruin the concept of it being light and easily portable anyways. Pick your poison.....
It does feel a little cheap. Or maybe that's not the right word, fragile might be better. But that's likely because it is so light and thin. It probably only feels that way because it is light and thin. That usually means it's probably cheap or low quality to someone of my generation. We like a good, heavy solid feel which says quality to us. It might be very well be quite robust, I just don't want to be the first to find out by dropping it.
It needs a stand too. IMHO, any tablet does. It's light enough that you can hold it fine, but if you watch a movie or read for hours on end it would be nice to put it down. Lots of cases incorporate that option.
So, worth it?
Yeah, I'd say so. It's a nice little tab and it comes in pretty affordable compared to crapple products.
Go try one out is my best advice. Either use a friend's or go try a demo one at the store.

I do have another question pertaining to Nexus devices in general. Do nexus devices "lag" over the course of time? I hate to mention the competition (aka Apple) but I know that over time their operating system doesn't lag very often as compared to Android devices (or at least that's what I've seen from friends etc who own Apple devices). My Galaxy SIII has been laggy to an extent and was wondering if this would be significantly less on a Nexus device. Devices in particular would be the Nexus 7 2013 model, Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 (I know its not out yet but one can speculate).

Depends on how it lacs. The s3 is a dual core so it may lag when you throw a bunch of things at it. I have the note 2 with a 4core exynos and it still runs fine. The nexus 7 doesn't use a top of the line 4 core but it still packs a punch. I actually got the old nexus 7 because it was a bargain but I couldn't deal with it stuttering so bad. It had issues with the memory controller and the poor design of the tegra 3. I think Asus learned from their mistakes with this second release.

I think about buying N7 2013 but I read here that it has many hardware issues, that prevents me from getting it..whats the chance I get faulty device?

Honestly, I've seen plenty of lag with Apple devices as well. My fiancee has an iPhone 4 and my mom has a 4S, and both run noticeably slower since the most recent update. Android systems tend to get laggy due to too much stuff installed/running on them and it can easily be fixed with a factory reset. Apple devices tend to get bogged down just due to system updates.
I'm wondering if my experience with my sIII has simply made me more apprehensive about purchasing another android device in fear of it being "laggy" over the course of time. Technology has come along way since the sIII in terms of speed and from what I know stock android is pretty fast and not bogged down with bloatware that both Samsung and Verizon think we want. Also to be fair when I talk about "laggy" I'm not saying I'm unable to do things it's just noticeable on certain things but overall runs pretty smooth.

The data just isn't there to give you a percentage of defective units. Plenty of people receive units without issues but plenty of people receive a unit with an issue.

Based on that poll 15/18 people receive a unit without a defect. Keep in mind that one of the people in the thread said he exchanged it multiple times due to backlight bleed, which is (unfortunately) normal for an IPS LCD depending on the severity. Some of the people who answered "No issue" may have received a tablet with backlight bleed but compared it to other tablets and realized it's "normal."
Just buy it from somewhere with a good return/exchange policy and go from there.
Hi guys, I am looking to purchase a new tablet (7" to below 10") and I am torn between getting the Nexus 7 (2013), an iPad Mini (probably my first Apple device) and the LG G Pad 8.3... this was brought about when I accompanied my wife and bought her a new cellphone the LG G2 hehe.
I am a little bit leaning towards the G Pad... if not for issues that I'm not sure are real... such as no App2SD option? And the lack of casing and accessories.
Any advise will be greatly appreciated.

That's great to hear! Thanks for the post. I'm a bit hesitant to jump in due to the SD concern... Hmm, does the OS upgrade available off the box? or depends on area / location? Hmm, I used to root my devices... but since I'm busier now-a-days... don't have time doing roots. I was my self just a couple of days ago trying to decide which tablet to go with. Can´t help you with Apple products because i will kill or destroy any objects in my house that is made by thiefs like Apple. Countless of hours went in to researching which one that would give me the most bang for the buck. I had my eyes on the Nexus 7 (2nd gen) since i do not want a 10.1 inch tablet. A 7" would do fine but i was naggin me that i was "only" 7". But when i got to the store to pick the nexus up i saw the LG G PAD 8.3. It had everything i was looking for! a screen that was a bigger than 7" and smaller than the 10".
The problem in the store was that i knew nothing about the LG G pad so i went home again to researh it! (CRAP!!). I found lots of tests both international and 2-3 here in sweden. They all stated the same thing which was that the LG G Pad 8.3 i very impressive.
I went back the same night and picked one up and i have now used it for 14 days. I am loving it. The Pad feels really comfortable and it feels "exclusive" with the aluminium backside. The cameras perform well both front and back.
Pros:
Fantastic screen
Fast and no lag (and i have not rooted it yet but i will to make it go even smoother)
Awesome size but i can still use one hand
Expandable memory
LG apps with for ex. Qpair
Cons:
Speakers on the backside sounds bad (although i can use headphones instead)
Cant find any accessories here in sweden for it and i had to import from ebay - 4 weeks shipping
I don´t know if its my battery that is optimized yet but the batterytime could use another hour or so.
On its own the nexus 7 is a great device, great screen, great software, great price. Place the G Pad next to it and the greatness starts to dissipate quite fast.
Ignoring the specs for one moment the G Pad looks and feels so much better, there is an air of quality not too dissimilar to the IPad. Of course the look is subjective but i love the white version and silver back.
The extra screen really makes a difference, everbody talks about 8" being the sweet spot, and for me they are right. The nexus 7 feels tiny now and i always feel short changed using it.
The nexus 7 screen does look a little sharper and brighter when web browsing but it is very close.
Generally the chips are not too disimilar, the Nexus 7 performs slighty better likely due to running a pure OS compared to LG, and battery life is much better on the Nexus 7, very likely due to the OS again. The LG will get better battery performance over time, either through dev support or software updates.
Add in expandable memory which should be a must on all devices and you have a winner. There is a very good guide on these pages for root. Its a 5 minute job and then you can move apps to sd in a flash.
The LG Pad population is growing quickly, it was slow to start, very little advertising and it was not pushed hard but word has certainly got round now.
Go for it, you know you want to.

I love my G Pad. The 8.3" is just the right size. Both for Notes taking and watching movies. Sadly I had to exchange it 2 times because of damaged display (not my fault), but the 3rd one is perfekt so far. My 4,7" LG 4X HD is so small when I worked with the G Pad for a while. It's really comfortable reading emails, browsing the web, reading articles, chatting. Playing games. And still mobile everywhere I go. I caried a A5 Notebook all the time with me, so I just swapped it for this nice device The big benefit is the Full HD Diplay, everything is so crystal clear.
Apple is just too expensive and I don't want an apple device anymore. There is only one button (I missed my "return" and "settings" button) and really a limit to what you can do with it.
Nexus 7 is too small and has these large brezzels.
G Pad is better than I pad because G comes before I in alphabets lol?
You mentioned that you didn't have time to root the phone. A developer who frequents this forum has developed a root method that will take about 5 minutes or less.
If you have enough time to load up the phone with so many apps that you're worried about app2sd, then you certainly have time to root the phone.
It does take some time to find a good case, but there are some out there. A few people have reported problems with their device and some have had to replace it, but it sounds like more people have had problems with the Nexus 7.
If you can find it at a good price, give it a try.
I just bought both last week and got my G Pad in yesterday. I will write up a longer comparison review when I can, but suffice it to say I'm writing this on my G Pad and the Nexus 7 is getting returned...

I picked one up yesterday and REALLY like it. I've had 7" tablets (Nook Color), 10" tablets (iPad 3), and 9" tablets (Nook HD+), so this pretty much completes the collection with an ~8" tablet that effectively splits the difference between those. The thin bezel makes it feel much smaller than, say, the Nook HD+, but the screen is really only 0.6" smaller diagonally, so it's a similar experience with less heft. The hardware is outstanding with a beautiful display, silk-smooth performance, and even though many reviews say that LG has really modified Android, I'm finding it's closer to AOSP than, say, Samsung by a long shot. It's mostly reskinned rather than completely reorganized.
To me this is the closest thing to an Android equivalent to the iPad Mini Retina. Yes, it's slightly larger vertically and the pixel density is slightly lower, but when you get close to 300 DPI (this one is 273 DPI, I think), it's imperceptible to the human eye anyway.
I've rooted it, primarily to use Titanium Backup to restore from a backup I made on the Nook HD+, but also to use some apps like fullscreen+ to make certain apps like games and book/magazine readers run 100% full screen without the status or nav bars. I do hope LG releases and official upgrade to 4.3 or even 4.4, but this device is so smooth I'm not sure that's really necessary.
I have a 32GB microSD card that I'd been using in the HD+ that I'll put into this device to hold media and such, but even with every app I had on the HD+ installed, the internal storage is only 1/3 full or so. The stock ROM is way less bloated than, say, my Samsung Galaxy S4 where it's half gone before you ever put your own first app on it!
The main thing that's missing in my opinion is peripherals such as cases and covers. I'm accustomed to having dozens from which to choose on the other devices I've owned (except for the Touchpad), and I'm only seeing a very small number of cases/covers, none of which really do much for me. I'd love to see Poetic release a Slimline smart cover for this device! I love the one I have for the HD+.
Anyway, I give this device exceptionally high marks as hitting an almost perfect sweet spot in the Android tablet market in terms of size, performance, features, and price!
I have the Nexus 7 gen2, and my LG G pad V 500 is on its way Tuesday. But I've already played with one and I can tell you the 8.3 is the way to go. The form factor is infinitely easier to use in every regard. There's nothing negative I can say about the Nexus 7 2013. I absolutely love it but I simply don't need it now as it would be redundant. So I'm selling it to a friend for exactly what I paid for it and keeping the LG 8 inch. I also have a Nexus 10 for watching movies Nexus 4 for daily use. ... and Neptune pine on order through Kickstarter for what it's worth

Thanks for that advice! To those who don't want to root the device but still want to get maximum screen real-estate you can simply do what I do and download Go Launcher from the App Store for free. I use it on all my devices and I love it because you can take away all notification bars. Plus it's freaking awesome to use and does not slow down the device. Add pie control and you're all set.

What kind of results are you guys getting on benchmarks? I'm really interested on getting this device. I have a Nexus 10 that I've enjoyed for about a year now. Wondering how much more of an improvement the LG G pad is compared tonit. In performance. I'll be using this tablet if I get it for gaming mostly. Thanks.

I've owned all the major tablets out there.. and I love this one. I've had every gen iPad 9.7", first gen ipad mini, both Nexus 7's, and the g Pad. So far, I'm extremely pleased with this one. Build quality feels better than the Nexus 7's, and portability is excellent. The case availability stinks right now (I do want the slim one, but they are not readily available, unless you want to spend a ton on ebay).

I rooted my Lenovo A2109 tablet but still could not move my biggest apps to my sdcard. Then I found out about the mount bind trick, where you redirect the system to a new directory. I moved my Google Newsstand, with 8gb of data, to my sdcard this way. Each time my tablet boots, it runs this command:

Basically, you run the mount command, with the bind option, followed by the destination directory and source directory. You will need root, but this will move even those pesky apps that the app2sd applications can't. Me so happy

I highly recommend the G Pad. Honestly, I have had a few Android devices (and the iPad mini and iPhones before that) and although I love the functionality of Android, I always felt that the iOS is superior in terms of user experience. Well after getting the G Pad, I no longer feel this way. Seriously, if all Android devices are at least as good as this in the future, I can think of absolutely no reason to go with an iPad or iPhone anymore.
PROS:
-Great screen: I've shown it to a few people and they have all commented on how nice it looks. The PPI may not be as high as the Nexus 7 2013 or iPad mini 2013 but unless you have a magnifying glass (i tried ), you won't notice the difference. As far as I can tell, the screen is very accurate and doesn't look yellowish or greyish as reported by some people. It's definitely better than a lot of the AMOLED screens on some Samsung devices which can look blueish or greenish.
-Tiny bezel: People complain that it makes it hard to hold but I've found several positions that make it quite comfortable. It also makes everything on the display pop out. It makes devices like the Nexus 7 look primitive by comparison (like an old television set compared to a flat screen).
-Performance: The main reason why I think it's on par with any iOS device. The interface feels buttery smooth and games and apps run without any stutters. People might say that most of the latest devices that run Jelly Bean are like this but I am really picky when it comes to this and unfortunately, most devices just don't feel up to the standard of iOS. With the G Pad however, I'd say it's 99% there. I've noticed one or two stutters sometimes when going back to the Homescreen but it's so minuscule that it doesn't bother me.
-Well placed speakers: IMO, the speakers are in a great place. Sure, when it's in portrait mode, they're both bunched up to the left but chances are, it doesn't really matter where the sound is coming from when you're in portrait mode. It's in landscape where it matters for stuff like gaming and movies. In terms of placement, you can't satisfy every position unless you stick 4 speakers in there like the Sony Xperia Tablet Z so I think LG's solution is quite good, especially since they're in a place that can't be blocked easily by your hands.
-Optimus UI: This depends on your taste. I really like the look and functionality of what's being offered by LG. I believe they have struck a perfect balance between style and functionality as opposed to just functionality (Stock) or just style (Samsung).
-Build Quality: This thing feels like a luxury device. It's tiny (without sacrificing screen real estate), has an aluminium back panel and the plastic they use on the other parts of the device feels as nice and solid as the metal parts.
-MicroSD support: Pretty much explains itself.
CONS:
-Battery life: It's not terrible, but definitely below average. I'm a pretty heavy user and most of the time, I have around 10% left after spending 12 hours out of the house. Your mileage may be different but I can say that this is the first tablet I've owned where I ran out of battery before I was able to plug it in after coming home. This only happened once but i'll definitely be bringing my charger from now on. Also, I noticed that even when plugged into my computer, the battery still goes down if I'm using it (although rather slowly). This also has not happened with any of my other devices which suggests that it uses quite a lot of power as opposed to having a weak battery (but I guess then they should've put in a bigger battery which would of course made the device bigger and heavier).
-Auto-Brightness: Unlike many people, I don't think the screen is potentially too dim. At maximum, it's as good as I could ever need on a sunny day. The only problem is that the auto-brightness is not very reliable because it tends to adjust to the dimmer side. It's not unusable but I would certainly prefer it if it was a touch brighter a lot of the time.
-Snapdragon 600: As I mentioned earlier, this thing is fast. But knowing that it doesn't come with the latest and greatest is a little annoying as far as pride is concerned and also for future proofing. But the competition isn't that great either (with the real exception being the iPad mini). The Kindle HDX has a Snapdragon 800 but unless you want to be locked out of the Play Store, I don't see that as a viable option at all. The Nexus 7 has an even older processor (although it seems to be able to punch above it's weight). At this price and size range, the only other option are some of the Tegra 4 devices like the Tegra Note but then you have yourself a tiny screen with a much lower resolution as well as a huge bezel.
Anyways, that's my take. Wrote a bit more than I was planning to but what can I say, I just can't stop talking about this device

Mostly I see people using Nova Launcher but if you recommend Go Launcher instead of stock UI, I'll give it a try but how does one eliminate all the notification bars? And what is pie control?
I'm not a rooter, maybe I can get a friend to do it if it is easy and a 5 minute process but I feel many don't do it and we would all be interested in getting as much as we can from a device as possible without doing so. Whatever other recommendations you can make would be great! Thanks!
I hope more people try the G Pad. I cannot put it down and wouldn't have to except I rather have it charge while idle but then again that only adds to the anticipation of using this great device again ASAP.
As far as the Kindle Fire HDX? I'll take the G Pad anyday and I also cannot stop talking about this device either. So glad I tried one on for size!

So, I was thinking about buying an Android tablet, so, as I am a Nexus 5 owner, my first thought was the Nexus 9, but the thing is just too expensive for me, I want something on the cheap side.
So after thinking for a bit I remembered the N7, it's got great hardware, it runs Lollipop and its freaking cheap. But it's from 2013, which I know its not necessarily a bad thing, so I want your opinion as you actually have the tablet.
Is it still worth buying? Amazon is selling it for $197.
I bought my Nexus 7 eleven months ago. I'm very satisfied with it. If you're planning to root it and unlock the bootloader, you'll be able to update with custom ROMs for quite awhile. If you're planning to run it stock unrooted, you may want to consider a newer tablet.
Yes, I think so. There's one 1 other tablet that can compete in terms of price, support, and price: the LG G Pad 8.4 GPE. Good luck finding one though. I didn't buy my Nexus 7 until this summer and I couldn't be happier.
Updates for the rest of this year, at a minimum. My only issue is with deb updates, which get held up due to LTE. Save yourself some more money by buying a refurb unit.
This may sway you... Check your local Staples store - they're having an unpublished clearance on 2013 Nexus 7. $98 for 16GB or $128 for 32GB. Many stores no longer have stock, but of you can find one it's a great deal.

I just bought mine like 2 weeks ago.... It was a decent price (before the groupon deal)
and it does exactly what I need it to... which is work dual purpose as a home/car tablet.
Honestly I would have rather had a Nexus 10, just because I am a bit of an HTC fanboy,
But in just home use it's still faster than my HTC One M7. actually.... a lot faster.
Has decent dev support, not so much in the way of car roms/mods but still a good overall tablet.

I was really excited for the Nexus 9 but I think it'll be too big and the price point is too high. I have repurchased my Nexus 7 a few times due to dropping and theft. The touchscreen on the Nexus 7 2013 is flaky when using a case or 1-handed operation because of a grounding issue with the device. Using the device 2 handed like normal you will rarely see any issues.
Gaming on the other hand is retarded on the Nexus 7 2013.
I try to play Terraria and it is just a frustrating mess. The dual thumbpad touchscreen controls get confused occasionally and causes me to either shoots or run off in the wrong direction. You have to take both thumbs off to reset it temporarily. Just FYI. This is normal across all Nexus 7 units as far as I have known. Some are more noticeable than others but they all have it. There are some flashable fixes that update the touchscreen firmware to have various degrees of sensitivity to help fix this but nothing is ever fixed completely. The fixes have helped make my tablet more enjoyable to use day-to-day but gaming will never be 100%.
I have purchased a Asus MeMoPad 7 for $20 for my son. A little lackluster tablet but plays games better then my Nexus 7.
Personally I was looking at the Nvidia Shield Tablet with a digitizer pen enabled screen. It seems to have issues of its own. The LG G Tabs, as mentioned above, are really solid tablets. I know you can pick up an LG version (with LG software) for pretty cheap. There isn't much development on that tablet though, unfortunately.
The Nexus 7 2013 is a steal at $128 if you can find one. Very solid unit. If my Nexus 7 2013 broke today, I would look else where.

I have had my Nexus 7 2013 for well over a year and I wouldn't replace it for anything. I did break last month when I slipped it into my back pocket like an idiot I sat on it and it broke the screen. Although Asus lost my Nexus for almost a month, it was still covered by its warranty..and they repaired it for free.. I Now use a Galaxy Tab 4 8.0, but its no Nexus.. I like the bigger screen, its the Nexus is still better in every way except there is no Micro SD slot.. I need a device I can carry with me that has a Micro SD.. Hence the use for the Galaxy tab.. But if you'd ask me to choose between the 2.. I'd take the Nexus any day..
If the price is right I don't think you can go far wrong. Internally, it's pretty much a Nexus 4 with a Full HD screen and a much better battery. :highfive:
I've had the LG Gad 8.3 for a day and whilst its a nice piece of kit, the aluminium back is slippery and being that touch bigger, you can't get your hand around it like the Nexus 7. There is also a ton of bloat.
Whilst I'm not convinced by Lollipop on my phone, it runs great on the Nexus 7. :victory:
