What does Lollipop by me over KitKat ? - Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) Q&A, Help & Troubl

The stock 5.1.1 is now available OTA for my P600. My question is: What is better in 5.1.1 than on my current KitKat version?

Since upgrading, I have noticed much better performance on my note 10.1 2014. The apps open and close a little quicker for me. The biggest thing has been the improved battery life and quicker charge time. I have not had to worry about my device having a full day's worth of charge.

I'll second that... I was quite happy with kitkat.... but 5.1.1 runs like a dream on my SM-P600

Been using it for the second day now and absolutely love it. Concur with the other posters - snapper feel overall and improved battery life.
For instance, I see noticeable improvements in browser responsiveness in both Chrome and the Samsung browsers (especially scrolling).
Apps open and close faster. Can I quantify it? No....but in real world performance, it feels snappier in nearly all aspects.

And the million dollar question, does the screen still jump/jitter up and down when scrolling and you pause while keeping your finger stationary on the screen? Battery life is a moot point, as I average 8ish hours of SOT with my 5.1.1 aosp build and 3~4 days with mild use between charges. Its all how you use your tablet. Also, is the settings/pulldown menu themed with that easterly multi colored circle BS like on the note/s series phones?

[Q] Laggy phone?

Anyone else feel the phone is rather laggy? Pretty surprising considering the specs. Part of me is hoping it is just the rom?
I have tried the hidden menu tricks to no luck. I also rooted and installed seeder and that doesn't seem to help as well. I feel it is most obvious on the keyboard.

yeah it is kinda sluggish
I agree
Yes, it's kind of laggy and stuttery in comparison to my previous G2...
This is my biggest concern with this phone, deciding if I will send it back within the next 2 weeks.
This post is laggy
There are a few stutters here and there but generally snappy for me.
Switch to ART. No more lag.
No lag for me. I'm using SwiftKey keyboard and Nova launcher, lag is gone
(+ some kernel tweaks using Trickster mod)
Personally I found that switching to ART didn't make a difference. Final version of ART in Android L will be great, but this is not the one we're having in KitKat.
My previous phone was a S4 GPE.
Questions go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/help
There's already thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2752303 where everyone may discuss absence or existence of lags and ways to alleviate them
This phone isn't laggy nor it is super quick... it's adequate. If you want a quick phone go buy a Nexus 5.

Ic, still a long time, but it is coming and it will aid in a better / faster LG G3? Just so i know if i should root mij phone and tweak here nd there. Or if i should just wait for the updates from LG itself to make the phone faster.
The galaxy s5 lags about 2x as much with half the resolution. Every phone lags.
I had a laggy phone when I first bought my LG G3. I took my phone back to the store and was going to return it. the salesman told me to do a factory reset first. I did the factory reset and now my phone is a super phone. No more lag. Faster than my Note III or my Wife's HTC One M8 hands down.
Keep in mind that some of the frame dropping is intentional... It's part of the power management.
I honestly can't wait until some kernel devs get some custom kernels out. Stock kernels tend to be really conservative. On my nexus 5, I'd see better performance and more efficient power management with custom kennels.
So it's a waiting game at this point.

[Q] lollipop 5.0.2 on Nexus 7 (2013) WiFi

Hello everyone
I own a nexus 7 2013 (WiFi) that is currently running cyanogen mod 11. I would like to try the lollipop's official release, but before doing it I have two questions:
1) does it run smoothly? (If the answer is "no" you can ignore the other question)
2) what is the best way to backup the applications? I don't want to lose my progress in asphalt and all the other applications.
Thank you
Hi, for backup i'm sure Titanium Backup is the best. And i'm asking question 1 too. Lollipop 5.0 was very laggy and unstable. Is 5.0.2 better?
I'm not a fan of Lollipop but it runs very consistently on the Nexus 7. Its not the fastest in the world but doesn't feel that slow either.
Whilst I'd advise anyone to give Lollipop a go on there tablet, I wouldn't say the same for the phone. For me, Google have made too many bad decisions in Lollipop......Lock screen, volumes, keyboard functionality, etc. I'll be sticking with the, "XP," OS for my phone which is KK.

It's slower on my Nexus 7. Kit kat is certainly the benchmark.
I think I will stay with cyanogen mod 11 , then. Thank you for sharing your experience
You should try it yourself. Do a clean install. Lollipop is WAY better than kk. Faster, smoother, better battery.
Why the hell would anyone stay on kk.

Wow, I also did a clean install and it was not my experience. Maybe I am unlucky
Its funny that I found the developer preview of L to be better in some ways than the finished article. Battery was amazing and the keyboard worked as good as KK but looked like L. Performance was very inconsistent though.
Does anyone know if the memory leak bug has been addressed in 5.0.2

Uh, because some people don't like bugs? And others don't like the look of it. I belong in both camps. Plus, I need to have my Xposed. KK is still the best version of Android, no question.

Best ROM for battery life?

What's the most stable and battery-friendly Lollipop custom ROM and kernel combination for the Z1C at the moment?
I've lost track after months of not upgrading my phone and would appreciate some pointers. Thanks!
I would recommend to not use LP if you are out for battery life.
KitKat, especially this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/sony-xperia-z1-compact/development/rom-d550314-4-0-108latest-t2862578/page59 has the best battery life. I downgraded a while ago after it sucked down my battery every day and doesnt provide any advantages...
Greetz
I agree with doenen.
Updated to 5.0.2 OTA (coming from 1 day old 4.3) and had a poor battery life. LP drained my battery from 100% to 30% in one day (12h) of occasional whatsapp, facebook and browsing.
I downgraded to Kitkat 4.4.4 (14.4.A.0.157_R2C, see here) and now I got from 100% to 20% in 3! days with the same activity (WLAN on, occasionally mobile data on, whatsapp, facebook and some chrome, airplane mode at night).
Kitkat is currently my favorite as battery life is one of my top priorities.

I generally agree but I'm currently using prerooted stock 5.0.2 and can easilly reach 2 days od battery life with the right use of Greenify and Amplify combination as well as stamina mode. I recommend you to have a look at those threads:

Thanks for your advice, but since I just purchased my Z1C I wanted to stay as close to stock as possible (also in case I need to make use of the warranty - though I am aware that my downgrading may already have voided that, but I decided to take that risk).
Thanks for the advice, guys! I'd rather be using a CM based ROM, rather than stock, cos I don't like the Sony interface too much. Are KK/LP ROMs that are based on CM that considerably worse at battery life than the stock versions?

I was using CM 12.1 nightlies for about 3 months and I can tell you it requires a lot of tweaking to make it battery friendly (I mean A LOT) and it still wasn't even close to KitKat or even stock Lollipop I'm using now. If you consider staying on KitKat I highly recommend this ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2743177. It's not updated for some time but it worked for me for almost a year and battery life was great.

+1 for KitSlim_AMG, if you enable conservative governor and disable a few things in play services, you should get three day battery easily.
Problem with LP is wakelocks. If you have a messenger installed, it will keep the mobile radio active all the time.
Just flash a ROM with built in wakelock blocker (eg AICP) and you're good. My battery life improved on LP since it uses ART.
Miui works great too!! Two days and more are really well for me

I've actually been using the old version of the MobileActiveRadioFix for a while now, with success I might say. Good to hear it's getting updated.
Two months since I switched to LP and I first tried stock ROM, then on AOSP.
Thanks to the stamina sony feature, I hardly noticed any faster battery drain between KK and LP stock ROM.
But with AOSP rom the story is quite different !
I've found this really interesting post ([GUIDE]Extreme Battery Life Thread(Greenify+Amplify+Power Nap))
But battery life is still not at stock ROM's level
the best ROM for battery life has to be stock. I'm on stock 5.1.1, with moderate usage 30% battery life gets used up per day
I'm on Xposed but didn't need to use greenify or amplify either. just use the stock STAMINA mode, activate to always-on, whitelist the apps that you want to continue to receive messages when screen is off

Where are all the ROMS?

I currently have a nexus 5 and I'm looking to upgrade. The G4 looks like a great option as it have more RAM better processor, better screen and mainly an SD SLOT!!!! I currently am getting by with 16GB which is then around 10GB usuable. My question is is this phone worth getting considering I would like a custom ROM. I'd be happy with CM12 but there doesn't look like much support, I can get this phone pretty cheap but I'm not sure as the support just doesn't seem to be here. Anyone with this phone got any advice? Look elsewhere or buy it?

I recently switched to the G4 (H811) from the S6 Edge back in October. I would consider it a good upgrade. The official CM updates are already rolled out and I've been using it as a daily driver even through the buggy (not complaining) Alpha and Beta stages. As a lot of other users have already stated, most of us considered the stock ROM good enough, especially with Marshmallow rolling out pretty soon. The only reason I switched to CM 12.1 was for the near stock look and the lag in the stock ROM. I've heard good things about the CTT MOD, eliminating lag involving thermal throttling. I used MicroMod777's debloated stock ROM. It ran smoother than stock in my experience. I'll be happy to answer anymore questions you have, given my experience with the device.

Thanks a lot. I really like this phone however I don't like stock. I am happy with CM12 though as it has all the features I use. How stable is CM? Are the bugs ironed out now? How is battery life and heat issues? What type of lag is it? Scrolling lag or gaming? I saw the mod but didn't read too much into it, also is over clocking an option via kernels?
Thank again for answering my questions, it will save me a lot of time searching the forums

CM is pretty stable so far, good enough for a daily driver. Trebuchet crashes every now and then and I've noticed some issues with the camera (besides the actual camera app, that's just AOSP camera in general). I'm not complaining, nor rushing the devs, but it's easily usable as a daily driver. To sum it up, bugs are present, but not bad. Battery life is iffy, I can get through an entire day with 2 batteries and sometimes a charge. I'd say it's around 3 hours SOT. Heat issues are way worse on the stock ROM, nothing too bad so far on CM. Lag on CM is little things like scrolling or keyboard animations, and apps crashing now and then. I haven't tried much gaming. Over clocking is possible.
if you guys use CM custom rom, which app use for camera? is the CM camera apps as good as stock to use all features of the G4 camera? or you don't care about photos, you just need other features covered by CM rom?

I think the issue is because of the bootloader and the fact that there are only 2 variants which is can be unlocked on.
I know CandySix is coming to the G4 though :good:

The other features are worth losing the camera. It's still great for regular pictures but don't expect a DSLR replacement. They're still working on getting the G4 Camera ported to the ROM.

you can use other 3rd party camera apps but you lose some features like night shot which is used by front camera as well.
also shutter time will not be more than 0.5s, stock goes up to 30s.
Its not clear to me how CM will make use of the colour sensor and laser AF. Are shots as quick to take, are they as clear.
Low light on auto ? this is buggy right now from the few samples i saw.
Whether unlocking bootloader automatically disables these features is not clear. Because if it does then its a one way process. You lose it forever.

You get 3h sot on cm or stock ?
regardless you should be getting more, on stock.
3-4h on data, 4-5h on wifi. If your brightness is 25% you can add an extra hour in there. This is normal with stock and greenify.
If you can't get that then you need a reset.
I've seen very little to no benefits accruing to battery life by rooting, roms or exposed. if you must go down that route its about features.

Looks like a ghost town to me. Compare that forum to the equivalent G3 forum, even at the current date in 2014, and it was way more lively.
With every passing day it looks more and more like the G4 has been abandoned. I guess you can't blame the devs, LG are being pricks about the bootloader.

Pretty clear there is not much to choose from and even then they seem to have bugs. This was a genuine question no need to be cocky although I'm sure it makes you feel superior.
Thanks a lot guys, it was basically a choice between the G4 or a Sony Z5 both have little support, obviously the Z5 has only just been released so it's to be expected. I'm just a little disappointed as the G4 seemed so perfect for me hardware wise vs price, plus the fact the G4 uses the 808 as opposed to the 810 which has overheating problems. The Moto X pure is looking like a possibility for this reason now. I tend to keep my phones fairly long so I need something quite stable. I think I will hold off for now until support for the phones I'm interested in grows, unless I see something really cheap in the black Friday sales
Thank you for your help everyone, I appreciate it!!

I'm in the exact same boat man, G4 looks like the perfect phone in terms of hardware but the software situation is just depressing. We'll see how things pan out once Marshmallow has made it to all G4s, but if thing don't pick up I'll have to look elsewhere.

if you can't get those figures in stock then Cm can't do more.
debloated if you have a carrier rom, its not necessary otherwise.
How long you had the device ?
People that can't get beyond 3h sot need a reset. something is running more than it needs to. a reset fixes it. dont just do a plain restore after, install apps in small batches and monitor.

Heavy usage. I got better in CM than stock. I've had the T-Mobile G4 since around late September. And yes, I need the debloated ROM because my stock H811 ROM is the carrier one. I've also noticed less lag on it with animations, particularly the keyboard pop-up ones.

Ah, then 3-4hrs of sot is normal.
was testing with youtube and speakers on max. 1 hr of youtube eats up around 27%. 3hrs of youtube like that and its recharge time.
With bluetooth it drops to 20%. Must be some more savings with wired speakers.
with screen off and just podcasts its 10%/hour.
So far the heaviest usage is recoding with 4k. Do that for 90 minutes and the battery is flat.

I'm actually not sure, I'm almost always using it. It drains around 10% over night (about 7 hours) if I forget to plug it in. That's on the CM ROM.
Bootloader is still annyoing to unlock for most models/ not possible, also this phone has so many different models.
On top of that we got from Lolipop to MM quite fast which may also be a reason for the lack of roms.
If I'd be a Dev I'd rather not put too much effort in Lolipop roms for the G4 if MM is right around the corner.
Dunno maybe it will get better now

P-600 on Official 5.1.1 Review anyone?

Are there any reviews of Note 10.1 2014 Wi-Fi on the new Lollipop? Wanted to know how well it performs ect...
Any pros and cons. Have lag issues been addressed?
Regards,
Mike

5.1.1 runs great on my 10.1. Much smoother than KitKat. I have seen an improvement in battery life. Lag is not as noticeable, but still there (Gallery app is still a mess). S-note still syncs files across multiple devices.
Overall, I would recommend it. I have only really seen improvements, not problems.

If you play any games your battery will drain WAY fast. Ever since 5.1.1 my battery sucks when I play games, yet Netflix and other entertainment apps work fine.

I don't game. I do, however, use my tablet heavily as a comic reader. I have seen a big improvement in battery there. Also, streaming movies has gotten better, too.

I have seen some official releases. My baseband is UBUCNH2 so I'm still waiting for a 5.1.1 relase for this model unless someone lets me know if I can use any other p-600 Lollipop official release without having any issues by doing that...when I find out I will gladly give my review

I been using the Panama release without issues on my 600. You can go here http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-P600/ and look for updates. Also look for samfirm program to download the firmware you want to try. Then use Odin to flash the file. There are instructions in the general section.

Just one comment on responsiveness. 5.1.1 faster to me too. At first it was weird because in all my AOSP devices Lollipop is slower and then I remembered that Samsung's version of Android is heavily modified, so I went one and heavily debloated both Lollipop and Kitkat Roms and lo and behold! The KitKat Samsung rom was now notably faster of the two (slower still than AOSP). The gains are in fact even more tractable if you run Linux on top of Android. Linux on Kitkat Roms is about 3 times faster in fact, I can't quite put my finger why is that so.
So -yeah- Stock Samsung is faster if you run 5.1.1 (but still slow by my standards), but in fact KitKat is the least demanding OS...
