Hello kind folks at xda,
I really hate my galaxy nexus the past few months. It's just so incredibly slow and the battery life is terrible. I just don't wanna buy a new phone yet. I'm waiting for the new Nexus device or maybe even the X-Phone by Motorola.
But till then, I need my nexus to be smooth again. I already given up the hope for a battery life. It just doesn't get any better. I've been not very active on xda for a long time so I need to get a bit freshed up.
What is for you the most smootest/fastest rom/kernel?
Im now using a battery savers Xylon rom from 2 months ago.
Thanks a lot!
Since 4.2 it all got a bit f*d up for our Gnex'es unfortunately.. I have the same feeling like you, I like the phone still generally but I hate when it lags so much, whereas before 4.2 it seemed super smooth. Yet it would be stupid to have a Nexus and run an "older" android version, right ?
I can advise Rasbeanjelly with trinity kernel. Runs smoother than stock, and it has the fasted lockscreen unlock I've ever seen! Battery life is doable too, comparable with stock rom. But anyways it's no newsflash that the Gnex battery sucks, it always has if you are a heavy user..
before you flash a new rom and kernel, have you considered what exactly is the real issue here? is it really the rom or yourself?
because quite frankly, a lot of roms are in fact not as smooth/stable as the stock rom.
are you running ****load of widgets? or have the background apps constantly updating stuff like facebook/twitter/rss feed etc?
when you say terrible battery life, what exactly is terrible to you? like how much standby + on screen?
We need more specifics to help, you cant just say tell me the best rom and kernel to flash.
TL;DR - CM + AK kernel is my personal favourite.

You're so right about that. Gonna try what you said. Hope I see some improvement and that the nexus wil actually feel like the flagship phone it once was.
also wtr_dhd, what rom are you running? I have had 4.2.2 stock rom for a few months before switching to CM, it was very smooth, smoother than ics or 4.1 even. Only those stupid hiccups android has when swithcing apps/within apps/chrome. other than that, all the ui transiation are very smooth, like ios level smooth.
People seem to like all these...

Like I said I'm on Rasbeanjelly rom. And yeah I used stock 4.2.2 for months too, and those hiccups are indeed annoying, and sometimes switching between homescreens lagged too, or app drawer.
I wouldn't say it was iOS'ish smooth at all, I'd say for android you need a decent high-end quad core phone to have such smoothness. A Note 2 for example even with crappy Touchwiz on it is SOO smooth, it destroys the Gnex in terms of smoothness and speed.. But ok, that's an unfair comparison

I'll disagree. Its better than my GS3 was stock. I am getting 18+ hours with 2+ hours of screen time on the stock battery, and have the official extended battery on the way. In order to get more than 10-12 hours on the GS3 I needed to root and put an aftermarket ROM and/or kernel, and it CERTAINLY beats the hell out of my buddy's HTC One.
@ jsgrpahicart
very funny.
@ hwong
I don't have a lot of widgets; only dashclock and a weather widgets which refreshes every 4 hours.
What I hate is that sometimes it's just so daaaaaaaaaaaamn slow. I'm just like whatsapping and the keyboard ( swiftkey ) just doesn't open. I'm listening to music through poweramp and I get a message, I open it and the moment whatsapp opens, poweramp closes. It's so goddamn annoying. It makes me wanna smash my phone ( figure of speach ofcourse )

try the ak kernel then, and try using westwood/sio/interactive, with 180000min/1200000max, the real battery saver is both the min and min screen off, just set it to 180000 and you will have fairly good battery. I normally get 22hours ish if i just let my phone idle on table, and about 4-5 hours normal use.

Well its true. No two people are going to come in here and tell you the same combo of ROM and kernel. You are going to get a bunch of different answers. The best thing for you to do is to just start trying them out. We all had to do it before we found what worked for us. What works for us may not work for you.

Thank you, will try. Is it also just butter smooth? That is now my biggest concern. I accept that the battery s*cks and that it doesn't get any better.

unfortunately, buttery smooth for android is only buttery smooth when you compare to previous versions of android, there will be hiccups no matter what devices you are on, probably due to the os mechanic, i dont know **** about the coding so I really cant say anything about it. but AFAIK, android wont be as smooth as ios in ui for a while, not until they overhaul the entire system like they did in ics and jb. =/ at least thats what everyone is telling me.....
TL;DR - buttery smooth vs 4.1/4.0.

Just yesterday I made an iPhone user jealous at how buttery smooth scrolling is on my GNex running 4.2.2 (showed him the text app with a long list of texts and pictures). He couldn't believe how much smoother it was than his iPhone 4.
AOKP M1/Franco kernel
well, i have both ip5 and gnex, my brother has a nexus 4 too, when i tried to compare ip5 with n4, the ui is smooth on both devices, however android will hiccup randomly while ios generally stay smooth, i am not saying iphone never lags, they do as well, but its only under heavy work load, unlike android where they can just lag out of no where, both devices lag under heavy work load, i get that, but somehow android still lag randomly, thats the only thing i am not happt with android, other than that, it is the perfect os comparing to ios.
I preordered my at&t lg g3 about a month ago with extremely high hopes, and coming from a jailbroken iPhone 5. Compared to it the UI functionality, battery life, screen resolution, openness of android, subpar camera quality, and many other features made me absolutely swoon over how amazing it was compared to that iPhone garbage. I have one really big problem with it though. Straight out of the box when I revived my lg, I have noticed major ui and app lag. Even after a month, the lag has remained persistent, even after many pointless factory reset and screwing around online to try to find a fix for the lag. I did root this phone, but I know good as well that rooting it did not do anything too the device to affect performance. I just installed some xposed modules such as removing the d delay between taking screenshots, the g3 tweaksbox from the play store (which I highly recommend paying 1.50 for three full version, it's Amazing), and getting rid of ads. The funny thing is, I expected my g3 to perform on par with smartphones with identical specifications, (snapdragon 801, krait 400, 3gb ram, 32gb memory). My brother has a galaxy s5, and I've run many tests between my phone and his, like app performance in games, opening/closing apps, antutu benchmarks, overall ui performance, and his phone basically destroys all off those tests against my phone. WHY?? I do realise that yes, the qhd screen does require more raw performance compared to fhd (I think I read somewhere it was 15%?), but most apps aren't optimised for qhd and put themselves to fhd, so why would a game like fruit ninja run at like 20 fps at fhd on my g3, and 60 fps on the s5, which is also rooted with the same amount of modules? And it's not just arcade fruit ninja either, games like temple run 2 lag when you get to a higher score, apps like tinberman open faster on my jailbroke iPhone 5 then my g3, and sometimes simple arcade games like don't touch the spikes have an occasiaonal stutter when you hit a spike, or just playing in general. I have also seen youtube videos of the g3 vs the s5 with opening apps and app performance, and they perform THE SAME! Plus the Ui didn't lag on YouTube either, my Ui scrolling between app pages (that's the Ui I'm mostly talking about, sometimes I also get lag in the stock browser and messaging app, but that's a different story) dips far below 30 fps, I would be able to tell if it was on YouTube because of the frame rate cap. I'm just fed up with it. I truly do love it though, in my opinion in has the best take on 4.4 kitkat I've seen, and coming from ios I still consider this ROM clean. Now for you, the xda forum what do you think I should do about my problem? I do not want any other phone but the g3. Should I unroot and flash stock Rom back onto my device and take it to at&t? I got this phone through the at&t next plan, so I'm not sure how they deal with warranties. Maybe they would give me a new device if I showed them the problems with it? I am running kitkat 4.4.2 if that helps.
Do what I did where.
Install the leaked 10j, remove the stock launcher and use nova. Also I you want it to fly do the high temp pro and thermal daemon mitigation mod. Be happy.
Like tntgdh I also put nova launcher and there is a little trick I use sony z2 live wallpaper from wssabi and set it to 60FPS. Phone is extra smooth. Under transittion effect od home screen i choose none or you can say generic google.

You should notice smaller app load times, faster boot ups, and better battery if you switch to ART. However, Xposed currently doesn't support it, so you would have to disable it until Android L came along.

Although there are many people out there who swear switching to ART does very little in terms of performance, I think it helps ALOT. Once i switched to ART i noticed the little stutters and little lags go away. My phone feels buttery smooth now. I also use nova launcher which is my launcher of choice, and it also performs buttery. I am very satisfied with its performance. Some may say I am just experiencing a placebo effect, but I think not.

Oh yeah it makes a difference for me too. I Decided to try Xposed after I changed to arp, so it reverted to dalvik. What a difference! I instantly noticed. So I ditched Xposed for now until it had support for arp.
One major thing was to install the 10j.
If you want something that will help a lot.. Install the 10j and use arp... Then if you wanna go further install nova and do the thermal mods.

I'm using the s5 now and while it has a beautiful screen and camera, I'm not to impressed with how battery life and ui fluidity. My friends offering me his g3, is it worth switching out based on those metrics? Has the g3 improved in usability with every update or is it just a hopeless mess?

Try it for yourself. The lag to me is not really an issue. There ARE slip ups here and there but generally, it performs completely fine and fluidly. It also depends on what is important to you. The G3 is only slightly larger than the S5 but the screen is .4" larger and also sharper (though in most day to day operations, it's not noticeable). The G3 also looks nicer and the software is not nearly as bloated as the S5.
Battery life on the S5 will be better but the G3 can definitely last me a day with no issues. For some people, it will even last two days. If you have access to a charger at work/home, then it's really not an issue at all. I've never been in a situation where I've run out of battery and didn't have access to a charger, not even once.
Not sure about the s5 but I had the 3 and 4 and liked my HTC m8 way more. And the g3 even more than that. I'm actually impressed with the stock launcher.

Haha. It's a sweet phone. I gave it to my 8 yr old. He's running cynogen 11 and it's perfect. I always buy phones on impulse. Without bootloader being unlocked it's kinda a Bummer but I'm playing with my new arduino and that keeps my flashing rom addiction under control.
The only reason why I didn't get the m8 is because of the poor after sales service and qc of htc. I had two m7s prior and they both had issues.
The s5 is a great phone but I'm not too happy about its fluidity. It always feels it's one step behind your actions. Like a home button press or an app switch would have one second delay. How would you rate the g3 vs the m8 based on fluidity? Almost at 80 percent?
Speed wise the phones are about the same. I used the backup I had from the m8 and using Nova launcher. So the setup looks about the same as the m8 and it acts just as well. Just bigger screen and way better camera. And I did the volume hack. This thing is way louder than my m8. Not the the quality is that great but it's a phone. If you want good sound use headphones or a stereo.
I've never favored Samsung or Apple, always HTC but going from the DNA to the M8 wasn't a worthwhile upgrade to me. HTC has bogged down the Android experience a little too much for me in the last couple years. I went for the G3 because of its sexiness and big screen and what I thought was going to be performance but have experienced a tremendous amount of grief on that front. I won't trade up my G3 just yet but I'm getting to the point where its a viable option and I may consider clone phones like a galaxy. I want fast and fluid and the G3 is just not as responsive as it should be.

I'd be happy with CM12 but there doesn't look like much support, I can get this phone pretty cheap but I'm not sure as the support just doesn't seem to be here. Anyone with this phone got any advice? I recently switched to the G4 (H811) from the S6 Edge back in October. I would consider it a good upgrade. The official CM updates are already rolled out and I've been using it as a daily driver even through the buggy (not complaining) Alpha and Beta stages. As a lot of other users have already stated, most of us considered the stock ROM good enough, especially with Marshmallow rolling out pretty soon. The only reason I switched to CM 12.1 was for the near stock look and the lag in the stock ROM. I've heard good things about the CTT MOD, eliminating lag involving thermal throttling. I used MicroMod777's debloated stock ROM. It ran smoother than stock in my experience. I'll be happy to answer anymore questions you have, given my experience with the device.

Thanks a lot. I really like this phone however I don't like stock. I am happy with CM12 though as it has all the features I use. How stable is CM? Are the bugs ironed out now? How is battery life and heat issues? What type of lag is it? Scrolling lag or gaming? I saw the mod but didn't read too much into it, also is over clocking an option via kernels?
Thank again for answering my questions, it will save me a lot of time searching the forums

CM is pretty stable so far, good enough for a daily driver. Trebuchet crashes every now and then and I've noticed some issues with the camera (besides the actual camera app, that's just AOSP camera in general). I'm not complaining, nor rushing the devs, but it's easily usable as a daily driver. To sum it up, bugs are present, but not bad. Battery life is iffy, I can get through an entire day with 2 batteries and sometimes a charge. I'd say it's around 3 hours SOT. Heat issues are way worse on the stock ROM, nothing too bad so far on CM. Lag on CM is little things like scrolling or keyboard animations, and apps crashing now and then. I haven't tried much gaming. Over clocking is possible.
if you guys use CM custom rom, which app use for camera? is the CM camera apps as good as stock to use all features of the G4 camera? or you don't care about photos, you just need other features covered by CM rom?

I think the issue is because of the bootloader and the fact that there are only 2 variants which is can be unlocked on.

The other features are worth losing the camera. It's still great for regular pictures but don't expect a DSLR replacement. They're still working on getting the G4 Camera ported to the ROM.

you can use other 3rd party camera apps but you lose some features like night shot which is used by front camera as well.
also shutter time will not be more than 0.5s, stock goes up to 30s.
Its not clear to me how CM will make use of the colour sensor and laser AF. Are shots as quick to take, are they as clear.
Low light on auto ? this is buggy right now from the few samples i saw.
Whether unlocking bootloader automatically disables these features is not clear. Because if it does then its a one way process. You lose it forever.
or you don't care about photos, you just need other features covered by CM rom?

exactly
So much easier to just get a nexus isn't it.

You get 3h sot on cm or stock ?
regardless you should be getting more, on stock.
3-4h on data, 4-5h on wifi. If your brightness is 25% you can add an extra hour in there. This is normal with stock and greenify.
If you can't get that then you need a reset.
I've seen very little to no benefits accruing to battery life by rooting, roms or exposed. if you must go down that route its about features.

3h SOT on CM, less on stock. That's with greenify and screen at around 30% brightness. I'm not going to complain to CM development for those numbers, but I'll try one of the debloated stock ROMs and report back after a few days. Thanks for the advice.
the ROMS are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/development
next time use search or better thread title.

Looks like a ghost town to me. Compare that forum to the equivalent G3 forum, even at the current date in 2014, and it was way more lively.
With every passing day it looks more and more like the G4 has been abandoned. I guess you can't blame the devs, LG are being pricks about the bootloader.

Pretty clear there is not much to choose from and even then they seem to have bugs. This was a genuine question no need to be cocky although I'm sure it makes you feel superior.
Thanks a lot guys, it was basically a choice between the G4 or a Sony Z5 both have little support, obviously the Z5 has only just been released so it's to be expected. I'm just a little disappointed as the G4 seemed so perfect for me hardware wise vs price, plus the fact the G4 uses the 808 as opposed to the 810 which has overheating problems. The Moto X pure is looking like a possibility for this reason now. I tend to keep my phones fairly long so I need something quite stable. I think I will hold off for now until support for the phones I'm interested in grows, unless I see something really cheap in the black Friday sales
Thank you for your help everyone, I appreciate it!!

I'm in the exact same boat man, G4 looks like the perfect phone in terms of hardware but the software situation is just depressing. We'll see how things pan out once Marshmallow has made it to all G4s, but if thing don't pick up I'll have to look elsewhere.

The Moto X pure has very similar hardware to the G4, if it's within your budget I'd suggest looking there once the phone has been out awhile and gained support.

if you can't get those figures in stock then Cm can't do more.
debloated if you have a carrier rom, its not necessary otherwise.
How long you had the device ?
People that can't get beyond 3h sot need a reset. something is running more than it needs to. a reset fixes it. dont just do a plain restore after, install apps in small batches and monitor.

Heavy usage. I got better in CM than stock. I've had the T-Mobile G4 since around late September. And yes, I need the debloated ROM because my stock H811 ROM is the carrier one. I've also noticed less lag on it with animations, particularly the keyboard pop-up ones.

Ah, then 3-4hrs of sot is normal.
was testing with youtube and speakers on max. 1 hr of youtube eats up around 27%. 3hrs of youtube like that and its recharge time.
With bluetooth it drops to 20%. Must be some more savings with wired speakers.
with screen off and just podcasts its 10%/hour.
So far the heaviest usage is recoding with 4k. Do that for 90 minutes and the battery is flat.

I'm actually not sure, I'm almost always using it. It drains around 10% over night (about 7 hours) if I forget to plug it in. That's on the CM ROM.
Bootloader is still annyoing to unlock for most models/ not possible, also this phone has so many different models.
On top of that we got from Lolipop to MM quite fast which may also be a reason for the lack of roms.
If I'd be a Dev I'd rather not put too much effort in Lolipop roms for the G4 if MM is right around the corner.
Dunno maybe it will get better now
Hello all !
I recently buy an samsung galaxy s9, I love it because of his size, today all manufacturers are racing for the biggest screen diagonal, but forget about the people who like compact phones.
the only thing I don't like is that the battery doesn't really last. I use some social networks like instagram or whatsapp to chat and the battery is not consistent enough for me, I think. (I uninstalled the bloatware app and made a maximum of optimization).
So I'm thinking about the solution of installing a custom rom. I'm doing some research and I like the pixel experience or the lineageOS.
The reason of my post is to ask you, you who know much better than me, is it really going to increase the duration of use?
Do you have any advice on this ? I read that you have to calibrate the battery after installing a rom but maybe you have other advice, a rom in particular, settings to do ?
For rooting i find this thread in this forum > https://www.thecustomdroid.com/samsung-galaxy-s9-plus-root/
but i got a SM-G960U1 that is not supported..
Thanks you a lot for all ur answer and information good to know XDA members !
Well I have a galaxy S9(5.8" size) and it's running NezukoOS with android 11. Pretty fluid and with light use I can get it to last me all day long, however I turn it off during night. If you really want more battery life, you should considerer using a custom kernel, as that is what is really going to improve battery life. The custom ROM will bring new features and make your phone feel different, but it usually doesn't improves battery life(at least the ones I tried out didn't help battery at all).
Hope this is useful!

Very helpful, thanks
Can you recommend a kernel for better battery life?
And another question to NezukoOS or general AOSP roms.. can you unlock the device by pressing the 'invisible' home button on the screen? Is this option still available in these roms?
Best

I used Nezuko Os and Yes the invisible home button was working for me.. But i switch now from nezuko back to the stock ffirmware cause i love the one ui design etc..
sorry for my bad english Greetings From Germany!!
Well I never used a custom kernel as I didn't had any problems with battery life, but I do know a ROM which comes with a modded kernel. It's call Noble ROM, and brings ONE UI 3 with android 11 to the galaxy S9. I tried it out and it works pretty good, and when you install it you have a modded kernel that will ask you if you want to improve performance or battery life, here is the link if you are interested on it https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...-03-2021-sm-n960f-fd-n-sm-g96xf-fd-n.4244747/ However if you prefer the stock Android I can't really help you, but for sure there are a lot of kernels on XDA forums, you just need to search one.
With the 'invisible' button, on all ROMs I tried(EvolutionX, Pixel Experience, HavacOS...) when the screen is off and you press it, the phone turns on, but once the screen is on it dones't work anymore. I didn't miss it actually, because I use navigation gestures, so the only moment I used was to turn it on. I don't know if that answers your question... Also I didn't find any options to modify pressure sensitivity on settings.
If you still have any questions feel free to ask me!

I also tried noble Rome, but every time it was very laggy and the interior assistant almost always crashed. I had to restart my device very often. My phone had also overheated and I uninstalled it again. no matter how often I did a reflash it was always laggy as described above

Oh yeah that's bad. My phone also overheated when I tried it however I thought it could be because I overclock it's CPU. My main problem was the camera didn't work almost all times and I needed to restart the phone continuously, so I went back to NezukoOS.
I also liked ONE UI however I don't know if that happened to you but my phone was very slow on ONE UI and animations almost all times were very laggy. That's why I start using AOSP, and also because I really like the new features.

I don't bo back because of various reasons. First and more important, it's starting to be obsolete and Android 12 is going to be released in August I think, which makes android 10 be 2 years old. Also this customs ROMs give a lot of features that I don't find on the original ONE UI, like caffeine. Finally, performance. My phone was slow and laggy on stock firmware but now its super fast, as if it was brand new. Hope this help you decide.

Wow very nice posts of all of you guys thanks a lot.
What do you think about arrow os? I am undetermined which one i should give a try. I prefer a very clean and hardly debloated os.
Some experiences?
I dont like the Samsung stuff so i'd like to try aosp. I think i can live without volte and wifi call
No problem! Glad to know that this is useful.
I tried Arrow OS however I used it only for 2 days. The ROM was good and seem to be stable however it didn't have a function which for me was crucial, smart charging (charges your phone only to 80% to slow down its degradation) so I went back to NezukoOS. Arrow OS and AOSP are in general don't have bloatware and useless applications preinstalled however if you don't want a lot of features PixelExpirience(not the plus version) is going to be good for you. It's simple, very smooth and almost identical to a Google Pixel experience. LineageOS and ArrowOS however have more features built-in.
Hope this helps you choose!
