Earpiece speaker crackle / distortion. Warranty with unlocked bootloader - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, i've had my G4 for a month and already the earpiece speaker seems to be faulty.
It crackles really badly during a call, and I haven't hardly used it for calls yet!
Thing is, my bootloader is unlocked so I hope they don't kick up a fuss regarding the repair!
I've done a bit of research and the earpiece speaker only seems to be about £3-4 on eBay, so if they do i'll probably just repair it myself.
Has anyone else had to use warranty with an unlocked bootloader?

Depends on where you live. In Germany they'll use an unlocked bootloader as an excuse for literally any sort of damage (namely W-Support and Dat Repair a subsidiary of Ingram Micro Services).

Try gently blowing air into the ear speaker with the phone face down. You may get lucky and the crackling may be due to a particle in the speaker.
It's an easy phone to repair. Check out the online videos.

Yeah i tried that, presumed it was dirt but it hasn't helped :/

Sooooo..... My phone has come back.
They have refused to repair it because of the unlocked bootloader.
They didn't even bother to ring me asking if I wanted to pay.
For reference this is in the UK.

I just bit the bullet and took the thing apart.
Turns out the earpiece isn't a very good fit! I think the fact it's a loose fit means it's vibrating against the chassis.
I wedged in a bit of PAPER!!! and voila its fine now LOL.

where can i purchase a replacement speaker?

looks like my speaker on my evo is pretty much dead (it's my fault i was dremeling some steel for a good 2-3 hours with my phone next to me listening to music so i could drown out the sound).
Are there any places that carry JUST the speaker at this point?
Huh, didn't realize that you could burn out a speaker by doing that.
At this point, you can try taking it into a Sprint store that has a repair facility and see if they can either sell you the part or replace it. I don't think they have many, if any, parts available yet though. I tried to get just a replacement battery cover and I was out of luck.
Maybe it's a warranty issue instead?
I would ***** and say warranty.

Hi this is an easy fix all you need is a really strong magnet (large rare earth) and place on outside of speaker. Move it around and tap on it a bit. Do it to the front and back speaker. I am am a mechanic and carry my phone everywhere. The magnet pulls the metal off of the weaker speaker magnet pretty easy. Works perfect for me and I have to do it twice a weak. I use a 3/4 x 1 cylinder magnet.

i've done this already, when i took the speaker out, the speaker was no longer smooth. It had a LOT of marks on it (dented looking) which looks out of place. the speaker sounds very off..
ok i called a local sprint repair facility and they are ordering me a new one (out of my 30 day warranty but they looked it up and said it should be ok still). Unfortunately i have a white evo, but we'll see. I don't mind the black one that much.
Looks like this is a common issue on some phones according to the guy, he didn't even ask me anything other than does the speaker sound distorted/blown out.

The same thing happened to a friend of mine, and I told him to deal with it for now or risk getting a phone with 2.2 on it and losing root. He decided his speaker was more important and ended up getting a phone with 2.2 and now is crying about root every day. If your phone is rooted, keep this in mind.
I am rooted but at this point the speaker phone is more important. honestly I do not use much of anything other than titanium. I will likely miss tether though but since I only use it once in a blue moon it will be fine.

The 30 day period is only for a replacement because of a defect or return because you're unsatisfied with the phone for any reason. It was nice of Sprint to still honor it however and get you the part.
The EVO still has a 1 year warranty from HTC; this blown speaker would likely be considered a manufacturers defect, in which case even after 30 days you could go through HTC to get a repair.
Anyone ever find anywhere to buy a replacement speaker? Not the back one, but the earpiece one....?
Mine has "52c10137db" assuming thats a part number. I need a new one mines crackly and I'd rather just fix it myself.

Weird vibrating sound from phone

well ive noticed since ive gotten my galaxy nexus and ive just ignored it however im not beginning to think i shouldn't and was wondering how common this is.
basically when the motor clicks in to vibrate the phone it sounds like something is loose in side causing a rattling sound with every vibration does anyone else have this ?, not sure if i should send it back to handtec or just try and get it repaired via samsung australia somehow cause they sell the galaxy nexus here now to.
I have the same thing, I think it's just a loud vibrate.

ive noticed tho if you squeeze the sides of the phone near the bottom then make the vibrate happen the noise isnt there, i also noticed under the battery cover there are some philips head screws i might try to tighten them maybe its a little loose however if this ends up being really common ill just live with it
I tried to tighten the screws...those little bastards are TIGHT! I contemplated taking her apart and checking the motor out. It does annoy me but I suppose I can live with it instead of voiding a $700 warranty.

There is no void sticker on the casing. Unless you tell them, the warranty is not void. I'm not responsible if it does though

how much does it cost to fix a water dmg nexus ?

So I messed up when I apply my wet screen protector on my Gnex. and now I cant hear anything out of my headphone.... when calling someone, they can hear me fine and I cant hear them unless I turn on speaker. So I guess I have to send the phone back to fix it.
How do I do it right? call google and ask to ship it back to repair without mentioning the water dmg?
If they found out about the water dmg, what will they do? just ship back unfixed? or call me and charge me a price to replace the damaged part? If so, usually how much?
PS: I remember when I first turn the phone on after applying the screen protector. there was one sec that the earpiece work then it stop working.....does that mean....it burned out?....?
Take out your battery, put it in a bag of rice for a few days.

I have had this happen to me and I ended up just waiting for a few hours and the sound from the earpiece came back.
Also had this happen to me, just did the rice thing and it worked out just fine.
Rice can solve most water problems.
Unfortunately if that doesn't work, it can be very hard to diagnose precisely which part(s) are affected by the water (although if its just the headphone you have a better chance) and it'll likely be more expensive (or impossible) to fix it than to buy a new one.

Rattling noise near speaker?

Hey everyone.
I bear sad news that my Nexus 5X which I got 2 days ago appears to have a rattle inside.
Its near the top but holding the buttons, the camera glass, fingerprint, speaker grills, and anything else I could think of still doesn't fix it so it seems to be internal.
I've not had a chance to speak to Google or LG about it yet and Carphone Warehouse (UK retailer) weren't any help online. Speaking to them in store tomorrow so fingers crossed they just replace it.
Does anyone else have this issue?
SOLVED! - I spoke to Google support and they said that the rattling noise comes from the sim tray.
There is a tiny lever which you push with the sim pin to remove the sim tray, and that lever is what rattles against the frame. Providing that your 5X works as it should, that's the rattle.
Thanks guys

Most likely the camera optics which are loose when unpowered. Launch the camera app to energise the camera, does it still rattle? If no or needs more shaking then its normal.

No luck still rattles when the camera is on and needs the same amount of shaking
I have this too. I wonder what it is... should I be worried?
Why are u shaking your phone, and why does it bother you.
So I never noticed this but since you said something I shook mine and I have the same thing.
Meh.. Barely noticeable even when trying to make it happen

I noticed there was a rattling sound when the vibration motor goes off, so I shook it a little to see if anything was lose and now I can't stop hearing it with every notification.
It's not usually something that would bother me but now I know its internal it will

Mine rattles too if I shake it, so have other phones, it's common, first search gave me this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2713803
It depends on how the optics are driven for focusing so the rattle could remain, it could be the vibration motor which is a circular motor by the looks of the teardown, so it might free spin when the phone is shaken.
Every smartphone I have ever owned, when I've visited the forums here there are people complaining about rattles when they shake the phone. There are lose parts in these phones as often things need to move freely, i.e. buttons, camera optics, and vibration motors, everything else is so tightly packed in it can not rattle. The only other rattle you might get is a broken off component, and the chances the phone still works with a detached resistor or chip is unlikely, plus you'd hear that moving around.
Honestly it is nothing to worry about. Google "phone rattles" and be assured it's normal.

Phil

So did they offer to exchange it or no? It's very annoying tbh once you notice it.

Internal ear speaker volume adjustment

I'm not sure exactly what caused my speaker to get to the point where I can barley hear anyone or anything through it. I have to resort to using the speaker phone to have any sort of conversation. Back a few years ago I always had an issue with the ear speakers on multiple phones attracting tiny metal dust or chips due to my line of work in manufacturing, causing it to become muffled and weak. This always resulted in claiming warranty or an insurance claim. But as phones got more resistant to dust, water etc. I haven't really had an issue. I am not sure if this is what caused my pixels speaker to malfunction but it's becoming unbearable to use on a daily basis. Now I could just go ahead and unroot and lock it back up and try to claim manufacturers warranty or worst case an insurance claim. Instead I figured I'd turn to the community and see about the possibility of increasing the volume via build prop to be able to effectively have a conversation, to help avoid going through the replacement process a little longer. Any ideas to overcome this issue are welcome.
Thanks.

All I can say is that I have to move the phone around until the volume increases, the sweet spot for that speaker is pretty small

Same for me. I have a notable hearing deficit and I am constantly positioning the phone for loudness.
