I have a question. What is the actual clock speed of the G4 CPU, specifically the Verizon VS986 as I remember reading the specs and they all say 1.8Ghz but it seems it's 1.4Ghz from looking at the phone and using SetCPU.
The two A57 cores are clocked at 1.8, while the 4 A53 cores are clocked at 1.4.
I think because setcpu is probably not updated to deal with the LITTLE.big architecture.

I like the look of the SetCPU widget as it has the speed and temps... Hmm, so basically the G4 CPU has 6 cores but only 33% of it runs at 1.8Ghz while the rest runs at 1.4Ghz, I always thought multiple cores usually has the same frequency for all cores.

The g4 has 2 different processors...a quad core capable of around 1.7- 1.8 ghz but locked to max 1.4 by stock kernel and a dual core capable of around 2.1 ghz but locked to 1.8 max...welcome to big.LITTLE systems...setcpu is outdated and has no understanding of our processors...also i don't like the clutter of widgets so i have no clue

That would explain it. I thought the G4 ran on a Snapdragon 808 processor which was hexa core.

Forgot all about the specs:
https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon/processors/808
CPU
Up to 2 GHz hexa-core
(2x ARM® Cortex™ A57, 4x ARM® Cortex™ A53)
So 808 comes in different clock speeds?

Yes it is underclocked by lg more than likely to prevent overheating...the g2 and g3 had major heat issues...if we can get a custom kernel that supports it we can probably crank out some real power with overclock
Speaking about the G3, doesn't that one use a quad core 4x2.5Ghz Snapdragon 801 CPU? Wouldn't that actually be faster than the G4? I have a G3 and the heating seems normal compared to the G4.

I've had Verizon Wireless since 1996 and had been using them since 1988, tried the other carriers too for the 14 day-30 day return policy. I've always been Motorola until Motorola stopped no longer offered MicroSD cards which was when I got the G3 and later the G4 that I'm currently using. T-Mobile is good in customer service but the network quality sucks in San Francisco as prior to AT&T Wireless buying Cingular Wireless, they didn't even have a network in CA/NV and only used Cingular's towers, Cingular uses T-Mobile in New York state. I have unlimited data 4G that is not throttled so hard to make me switch, besides I have a loyalty pricing.

Im deciding between getting the Galaxy Nexus for Verizon or a quad core phone. I was originally 100% going to get the Nexus but now that it is only 16 gigs and no expandable storage, I dont feel so safe getting it.
I like the whole concept of the cloud but what about when your on a plane or out of the country and do not have service or wifi. Other things that are causing me to stray from this device are the screen is RGGB (Pentile) and not RGB (Regular one), the top and bottom bezels are huge, its an OMAP processor (not the faster Exynos), and the processor is slower than the one in the Samsung Galaxy S2 (even though its overclocked). Things I like about this phone are that its going to get updates quickly, its stock vanilla android (no manufacturer skins), it has an ENORMOUS battery, and it has 4G LTE. When quad core phones come out, they will lose the bottom android buttons, have longer battery life, most likely better screens, 4G LTE, and also will be just as thin. If the quad core phone is made by samsung, than i plan on buying it immediately because TouchWiz is the least intrusive manufacturer skin, they are usually on the thin side, and have AmoLED screens.
I have an upgrade right now which i can give to my mom and i have another one in March. What should i do. I also want a quad core phone that has an unlocked boot-loader just incase i want to run a stock vanilla android rom (Verizon usually doesn't do this, just the nexus has an unlocked boot-loader). Please help
P.S. Im not buying anything thats not 4G LTE and im not buying anything off contract.
Wait for dual quad core phone better
Obvious answer is obvious.
Dual Core Padfone.
If you have an upgrade now and in March, why not get the Galaxy Nexus now and then upgrade to quad core next year (and give the GN to your mum)? Do you really need quad core? Are you really going to use a first gen quad core or might it be more sensible to wait until the issues are ironed out (such as battery life, app compatibility and who knows what else).
You can always for the next gen gadget .... but then you will never have any at all!
1.) Do you really need more than 16 GB?
2.) If you read a lot of the reviews and asked people on XDA, a lot of them said they don't notice any pixels and the screen looks great
3.)With the hardware acceleration and the optimization between hardware-software, many people are saying it is considerably faster than the Samsung Galaxy S 2
4.) As far as my knowledge goes, it isn't overclocked but its actually underclocked from its original 1.5GHz
5.) Good luck getting more than 4 hours of juice with a quad core phone with standard battery technology unless battery technology is SERIOUSLY revamped
6.) You seriously would compromise having Ice Cream Sandwich first AND vanilla android for a faster phone with the touchwiz launcher?
7.) As far as I'm concerned, dual core technology is good enough for a phone. I don't need a quad core proccesor in my phone as I have a desktop and a laptop at home. (Also, what do you really need that uses quad core technology?)
8.) The bootloader might not be unlocked with some of these other phones, the developer base will not be huge, and it'll take a long time for the software to be obsoleted on this phone, as it is a phone in the "Nexus" line by Google and as mentioned earlier, there is a huge developer base so custom roms would be built fast and I would say probably be one of the most functional
Note: This is biased as I already pre-ordered my Galaxy Nexus so some points may be exaggerated
Note 2: I feel that a dual core phone would suffice as right now as I have a Motorola Milestone (International version of the Droid), so also keep that in mind when reading my points
What are you talking about? It's already been confirmed that the Verizon LTE model comes with 32GB...
Besides, it'll be late-2012 before the quad-core phones start coming out.
If Kal'el does what Nvidia states just having that processor alone would increase battery life. Most of the work would be done on the companion core unless you need more power. We won't know exactly how well it works until we see it running in the real world.
I have to add the Nexus is UNDERCLOCKED for battery life.

nothings confirmed at all....their website actually changed to 16GB
The website has been updated a second time...
http://www.google.com/nexus/#/tech-specs
says 32GB and not 16GB
I hear Verizon's version will be 32gb LTE with bigger battery for $299. Sounds perfect.
My PC is only a dualcore Intel, kinda weird with a quad core phone. Aside from gaming, not much will use all that power. Plus quads wont be start hitting until more summerish... with US carriers getting them starting Christmas. I don't think there is a need for quads ATM.
Plus I'd rather buy a quad tablet vs a phone.... that's where I do most of my gaming and core work.
Pick up the Nexus and the Quadcore Tegra3 Asus Transformer Prime. Perfect combination. Asus puts out updates as fast as Google does. Easily hand them my money in the future.

Transformer - 3.2 Revolver OC/UV

Sweet! Can't wait to run [email protected] on all my idle cores.
I've said this numerous times and will probably continue to say it several more times throughout the rest of this year and all of next year but whatever...
I respect the whole bigger better faster processor thing but seriously what game or application is out there that is seriously compelling enough to actually use all that power? Sure you can get a quad core Tegra 3 summer next year but I'd put any amount of money on it that summer 2013 people will be wanting Tegra 4's with higher clock speeds or additional cores and for what? There are a few games out there that will benefit from the added power but being that they'll have a high development cost and those developers want to sell as many of their games as they can every last one of them will be able to run at satisfactory levels on this phone which begs the question: are you really going to spend hours upon hours upon hours of your life playing whatever cell phone games make use of that awesome processor or do you just want it so you can show people your benchmark results?
You do really think a quad core processor is being made in the phones to just play games? Maybe you should do some more research on the actual benefits of a quad core phone. So many people are mis informed it's not even funny.
First, the quad core processors are MADE for more effecient battery life. The Tegra 3 actually has 5 cores, one companion core which runs at a very low clock rate and the numbers of cores being used changes due to the demand of the user.
Second, the 28nm gpu's will also be a lot more effecient on battery life. Still gotta read up on that. And the next generation LTE chipsets, for all you verizon folks, is going to be a lot more effecient as well.
I'm sick of people thinking that quad core processors are going to destory battery life without actually researching them.

Exactly. Quads will have there place but is it reasonable to skip the Nexus now and wait... my answer is no.
Unless you have a late model phone already, the SGN seems a good buy right now.
G2x - 2.3.7 CM7
Transformer - 3.2 Revolver OC/UV
This is something where one could say that "if you could wait then wait until the 16 core phone comes out" ... obviously quad core phones are not available at this moment ... if you want to wait then there is always something better in the works.
With no quadcore phones available or announced yet ... I would say that go with GN LTE even though I would still wait to read some reviews and check developer base support because in the end LTE and battery are not friends and verizon is known to mess things up with the handsets. Like preloading bloat on a Nexus device. If custom ROMs is your thing (which I hope it is as you are here on XDA ) then wait for the reviews to come out.
Please do us all a favor and wait for the Quad-Core phone to come out, and then once the Quad-Core phone comes out in about 6 months, please come back to tell us that you're debating wether you should wait for Hexa-Core!
More Nexi available for us!
Edit: eh, way too sarcastic and nonsensical. I'm in a better mood now anyway. 4g is a good idea, that's majorly expanding next year. Quad cores will take a little time to impliment. Who *really* needs one anyway? Hell, I just got my first dualcore and ICS will be the only android thus far even able to begin utilizing it. Honestly, ill go out on a limb and say that the mobile phone market is the fastest developing consumer electronics sector on the planet. If you wait, something new will be just behind it. Play with the phones in the store, find one you really like and buy it. I like my rezound-defects aside-but I risk the possibility of no s off. if that's important get a phone that works within your constraints.

this had been bugging me and now when i decide to look into it, all of the google searches are raped by news of the s4 and not answering my question. so with that said, why do all of the U.S. samsung devices get the qualcomm chips instead of the exynos processors from samsung? it just doesn't make sense to me as to why they would switch them up. o.0 and it bugs me more that the qualcomm chips (while still fast as a bat out of hell) are slower than the exynos chips that are in the international phones..
It was one of two options:
Go with the exynos, then have an external radio for the LTE resulting in worse battery life or...
Go with the dual core snapdragon that had the capabilities all on one chip.
It was tested and the actual real world performance was very similar between the two, so the option they chose gave us the best performance with the best battery while maintaining access to LTE.
A similar situation appears to be occurring on the S4. The Note II came with a quad core chip with LTE.... so our S4's will most likely be the same to get LTE. The Octo exynos is not ready for the LTE inclusion YET. By the time the "Note 3" is out, it might be ready for prime time.

Most customers don't buy their phone because of benchmarks or boasting rights about how many cores it has. I don't care what processor it has as long as it has good battery life and isn't laggy.

That's true. I there's a [floating] statistic that like only 12% of people root/jail break their phones anyway; so on that statistic, the other 88% is just based on surface features and shinyness. I bet if you asked most people they couldn't tell you what kind of processor is in the phone.

Dont be confused by the cores on a phone.
The galaxy S3 by T-mobile only has a Dual Core CPU. International version has Quad Core. Every review i saw comparing the two said that the T-Mobile variant was faster and smoother in general use. I personally love my S3 from T-Mobile and notice no difference in speed when compared to my Tablet which has a Quad Core in it.
The biggest benefit of the international S3 was the support and development for it. But i would be more than happy with the M919. If you dont like it i'll glady take it off your hands xD

The performance is not marginal as the other user suggested. It appears that samsung set some limits on the octacore and gpu to make the US variants "look" equal. Once the new linaro is updated the octacore will be running all 8 cores and the beast will be unleashed. I will do a side by side video tomorrow. I have an i9500 and just bought my dad a M919.

Once the new linoaro is updated the octacore will be running all 8 cores and the beast will be unleashed. I will do a side by side video tomorrow. I have an i9500 and just bought my dad a M919.

the I9500 runs two quad cpus. a lower power A9 [email protected] for daily tasks then switches to an A15 @1.6ghz for performance. this allows the power hungry A15 to go to sleep to conserve battery. switching between the two quads only takes a few milliseconds.
if you put apples to apples.. s600 snap [email protected] against [email protected] the A15 would be the clear winner. snap Dragon s600 @1.9ghz and A15 @1.9ghz the A15 still runs supreme. instead of the s600's 6 operations per clock cycle the A15 does 8 operations per clock cycle.
one more thing. I believe the power vr gfx544mp3 gpu offers a much smoother frame rate compared to the adrino320. Khan!!!!!!!!!!!!:victory:
too bad the I9500 can't pick up t mobile bands or lte.

I posted a previous thread along the lines of the same question you have ([Q] Got the SGH-M919 (T-Mo S4): Worth changing?).
To summarize: I had bought the M919 in a hurry since I needed a replacement phone, and was wondering if it's worth returning for the "octo-core" version (it's not really 8 cores, google it). Basic consensus is that, while it does have a little bit more power, you'd give up T-Mobile LTE support, so in reality it'd be a slower experience overall if you're counting data usage.
I did a bunch of research on my own, and the basic result is that the I9500 is faster and has a longer battery life, but not by much (probably even less of a gap than the HTC-One versus the M919, better optimized Sense UI aside). So it's probably better to just get the M919.
Also keep in mind the M919 just dropped in price by $50 if you get it from T-Mobile.

Canada GSM is now advertising a Penta Band Octa core S4 Model M 919.
I thought the M 919 was quad core exclusive to Tmobile and Metro PCS.
Is there a International M 919 Octacore and if Pentaband would it cover LTE 1700 AND LTE 2100 on Metro and Tmobile ?
I wonder why the G3 doesn't score better in comparison in these tests? Even the G2 did better in some.
http://appleinsider.com/articles/14...ess-outperform-competing-phones-in-benchmarks
Because of screen resolution.
Not entirely, its more about optimisation. iOS devices have always done well in Sunspider because OS and browser optimisation is by far the most important factor. The fact is the differences you see here are probably not even noticeable to the user anyway.
Also remember that the article was on Apple insider, the benchmarks are cherry picked to make the iPhone look good. Its also been reported that Safari is somewhat 'designed' to win at this benchmark.. if you get my meaning.
For what its worth my G3 did Sunspider in 726ms, not the 875 quoted in the article..
to be quite honest I was sad when I saw poor marks in an tu tu and geekbench, initially. but later I thought f*ck that. it gives me what I want- a gorgeous screen with smooth performance in heavy game like asphalt 8 and playing videos in 2k and 4k resolution with ac3 and dts sound with 21/22 hours battery on a single charge. so no worries about how much the synths performance goes in the south
slower RAM, throthling
G3 has slower RAM than G2. Looks like Lg sadly wanted to save some money.
And now G3 is crapping out in RAM extensive benchmarks!
I hear also G3 can overheat and throthle in benchmarks thus worse scores than G2.
Maybe some devels can bump up clocks on RAM, but I don't know about the heat. In my opinion G3 realy needs all aluminum case at those speeds to dispatch heat better. The heat is becoming a BIG PROBLEM in so fast smartphones.

Display causing it. Adreno 330 is not a powerful GPU for QHD displays. Yes there was some overheat problems but it solved, at least its %90 of overheating problem solved. RAM management is not a problem. RAM is good and works really nice it doesn't makes any lag or freezing crashing etc. Got 41K on benchmark at most. When i first benchmarked it was 31K and it was biggest disappointment of the year.
Its NOT the display resolution!!!! This has been covered over and over. The G3 under performs even in pure CPU benchmarks that dont even involve the display, its because of excessive thermal control. Tweak the CPU governor, disable as much of the thermal control as possible and it becomes much quicker.
For example my G3 out benches the N5 and G2 in Basemark X GPU tests if I force it to scale up. This murders battery life because the only way we have to force the issue is to force it. We need a custom kernel so we can set better CPU limits and get rid of LGs junk thermal control.
This is how my F460 (Prime) did with Sunspider. Higher end SOC & Adreno.
Once we get custom kernels and roms (if we ever), the scores, and even battery life will improve. LG G3 stock rom is so heavy compared to pure AOSP or even CM. We need some AOSP love. This device will fly...

To be fair, the numbers you're getting on the G3 720p 3dmark test mentioned in the report are higher than that of the ipad air or the ipad retina according to 3dmark's own records.

So your devices are outperforming Apple's best tablets despite them not being optimized for benchmarks due to throttling (thermal).

Yes. Thermal protecting is nice addition. But when device overheats it makes barely unusable. Cannot make calls due to heat on the top. And i think same Adreno 330 will perform really good performance on up to 1080P devices. But 1440 is overwhelming for it. They should wait and put Adreno 420+S805 APQ8084 which clocks 2.7 GHz (2675 actual). Maybe 420 will perform better on QHD displays.
I also had some issues with LG back in time. But honestly i didn't had any problem with phone except overheating. UI is ultra-smooth comparing to TouchWiz. As a 6 year user of Samsung Android phones it made me feel better. I had some worries before buying to phone due to old fails from LG. But my choice was giving it a try. Now i see how much i did good with buying it. Best phone ever for me. If the overheating stuff is going to solve one day i'd be love my phone more.

Other than LTE CAT 6 version, all of G3 versions have S801+A420. If i'm not wrong its same on T-Mobile, AT&T and International model (D855). I think yours is CAT 6 version whichone released after some months. In performance may a bit better with S805 but in GPU i cannot say such a verified info. Just thought maybe A420 can handle QHD screen. If even it cannot handle, that means devices aren't ready for QHD screens. It's like for example trying to make Watch Dogs work with GT740M. Full of freezing, overheating on card and even burning it. It's another reason for waiting AOSP based ROM. Honestly i want to taste Android L with its pure edition like on Nexus 5. But LG's original ROM's doesn't has that much bloatware and it made me happy and that's why i can wait for it. But sadly no one seems to successful on unlocking bootloader. In my prev. phone SGN3 i had to delete at least 100 apps whichones are useless. In LG i just deleted 3 apps from operators and providers.

Hope so too but it's looking to be unlikely.
This is the first phone I haven't rooted and flashed with a custom rom/kernel and I've owned many (listed below).
HTC Dream
Nexus 1
Galaxy S2
HTC One X
Xperia Z1
HTC Butterfly S
Nexus 5
That's because the stock rom is decent. Of course rooting is always on the cards because I can flash mods or even test mods that I make via CWM/TWRP and make nandroid backups.
Android L will make this device better!
ART runtime with 60 FPS UI and Project Volta can only make this far better. Regardless of whether it's a D855/F400 or F460S.
Problem with LG is timely updates. Imo, the least they could do is to let is unlock the bootloader to compensate.

Android L is one of exciting stuff that i want to see with ART runtime. Same problem on Samsung. In Turkey samsung devices never get any attention and softwares mostly buggy. I reported one of bugs and they banned me on their facebook page for reporting a critical system bug. Samsung is really loving its customers. Hope LG is not going to ungenerous on updates and send our updates on time. Honestly i have no hopes that we can see Android L before late 2015.

At the moment I'm not sure.
Historically the exynos has been behind in the GPU department.
But the trade off has been the SD chips have been bootloader locked.
The exynos I've heard can still be unlocked, so if the GPU / CPU has caught up at all then it would be the preferred device in my opinion.
But too tell the truth it's really down to you.
I read somewhere that this year the Exynos build isn't very good. They said it lagged behind SD in most measurements but I don't remember where I read this.

Since Galaxy S8, Snapdragon is ahead of the number game in benchmarks. The last good performing Exynos is from the Galaxy S7. In normal day to day usage, you won't notice the performance difference though, they're mostly identical in speed except for the battery efficiency, Exynos drains battery faster.

Tbh there are plenty of nice looking girls out there that I would root before my phone. I don't root my android phones, so for me I'd rather reap the performance advantage than the mod-ability..
As with the S10+, the SD855 had way better camera processing power too. No doubts this trend will continue with the SD865 :good:

Performance?
Ok so my OnePlus 5, rooted and with a custom ROM managed a 14 hour and 47 minutes screen on time in a single charge, I have proof on the OnePlus 5 thread.
My P20 Pro managed 17 hours, also rooted with a custom ROM..
So your theory is broken pal, also to do with performance, removing swap storage actually speeds up the device, definitely for gaming.
Not to mention truly being able to debloat.
Just because I root. Don't think for a moment that it isn't stable or things are broken lol, if you've got a bad device or a novice dev then yea sh** will be broken but for the most part on most devices it's perfectly fine.
Not to mention the additional features which you obtain by having root access.
For me it's an absolute no brainer, as for the previous galaxy's I can't comment, but let's see what happens after the 13th and perhaps a day one patch.

You are reading way too fast into the other guy's post.
Yes, with root you can modify things to make performance better, but you're still limited by hardware.
Honestly, with or workout for, exynos or snapdragon you're going to get 99% the same phone.
Early bench marks already show the Exynos 990 is a pile of turd. While I'll reserve judgement until the direct comparisons have been done the initial results are similar to last year's. 99% of phone users won't root either. So that should not even be a consideration Pal

Mmmm I dunno I didn't mention the girls sentence?
Plus if the exynos is as some have said, then it won't be 99% the same phone.
Supposedly and I can't say for sure until I use it.
Exynos is meant to be weaker in terms of GPU (I expected that)
Exynos is meant to drain faster than the 865 (I didn't expect that)
Updates against the exynos and it's Mali GPU are going to be few and far between and seeing as s.korea is now using the SD, that can be expected to be worse than previous years, which isn't good news at all..
Best case scenario is that the Mali is on par with the 855 or 855+
Can be rooted
Gets updates to fix drain
Gets updates to fix camera
Lastly, the limits of hardware are fine, if you can test them, on stock you can't.

The GPU is worse only because it is a 'stock' ARM GPU where as Qualcomm builds a custom, GPU. The differences, on average, are minor in everyday use, at least historically.
The battery issues I can't talk about much. Last phone I had as a Exynos was the S9+ and it was within a few percentage points of my S9+ SD. And battery is very much a personal thing, people use their phones very differently and the battery drain is very different based on things as obscure as signal type and strength.
I highly doubt the international version will be worse off than before, but only time will tell.
On stock you can test the hardware. You can't push it the extra 1% to get that tiny additional boost. Thing is, not everyone wants to or can root. Root brings its own problems especially with security. But I don't really want to argue if any one person should root or not, that's up to the person.

Nah mate I wholeheartedly disagree, I had the OnePlus 5 which I think had an 850 and compared to any exynos at the time or the one after the oneplus outperformed it on the dolphin emulator, all games from the play store and benchmarks.
The GPU has always been the exynos' weak spot, I just hope this year they may have caught up a little.
Single core CPU performance and multi had been close, which is why using the device appeared fine, but the GPU is a different matter
