My 5x comes in on Friday and am wondering what people have been doing to get their microsim activated for their line? Did you just walk into the store with phone in hand or did you have to haggle them to do it for you and not tell them what device you're putting it in?
You may want to just go ahead and get a new nanoSIM to replace your microSIM. I actually had to get a new SIM for mine because my cut-down and sanded-down microSIM was giving me intermittent "no SIM installed" errors on the phone. I did it via Verizon customer service chat and just told them that I got a "different" phone (not "new" phone) and needed a nanoSIM to replace my old microSIM. They sent me a new SIM without asking what phone it was for, everything works fine now.
I had them mail me a sim. When I called to activate he asked was it for my htc one m7, I said yes and they proceeded to activate. When it was activated he saw it was a different phone, but I just said I bought a nexus, thanked him, and hung up.
It's worth going into an official Verizon store and asking them to activate it. I had no problem when they looked up my IMEI.
Same . no problem going into store and handing them the nexus and having them activate it

Just throw the sim in the phone. Done.

Question for you guys:
Since the Galaxy Nexus (and other LTE devices) use SIM cards with Verizon, is it no longer the case that they can have bad esn/meid/imei numbers?
I know activation happens automatically when you pop the sim in, I have a Thunderbolt now that I purchased used and just used my Jetpack SIM to activate it. I switch it back and forth all the time, after you swap the SIM your device changes in the MyVerizon site, along with available plans and options. I used my Thunderbolt for a long time just on a hotspot plan that way, very convenient.
I'm curious because I see "bad esn" Galaxy Nexus phones on eBay, so I just don't get why they would be bad if all the activation info is related to the SIM card and not the device itself.
Hopefully someone can educate me on this.
I know this has been asked before, but there are no good answers from my searches. Most threads end up simply saying "ask Verizon".
I know what Verizon thinks: "buy from us so we get your money"
The phones still use CDMA so they can still have bad ESNs.

Yeah, but isn't all the activation info tied to the SIM card, not the device? When Verizon activates a SIM, they don't need a device to activate it.
Does the activation process read the esn from the device and send it when trying to activate with a SIM card? (this must be how MyVerizon knows what device you're using? Maybe?) If this is the case, there must be some software somewhere doing the work?
What's the point of a SIM if it's getting a unique device id from the device? Is this just because LTE and CDMA are still kind of separate?
going off my personal experience you should be fine if you buy one. Heres my readons. I purchased a used gnex off this chick but didn't realize it used a micro sim instead of regular. I thought eh I'll be fine I doubt this chick is trying to rip me off. I go to the store and tell them I need a micro sim to activate my phone. They do their thing then ask where I got the phone from. I said this damn thing is reported stolen isn't it? Yup. Fml! $400 gone. Well I end up meeting up with another guy and buy a brand new one from him. We call Verizon to get it all set up before I pay the dude but he says DO NOT give them the last digit of the imei off the phone. I'm thinking ohhh k. And I give it to them anyways. (I was always told I was a good listener in school) they say this phone is stolen or hasn't been activated on an account so if that's the case they need to activate it. So I call back this time and leave the last digit of the imei out. And like magic it was activated and Mr Verizon rep was happy to help. So then I ask this guy if he thinks it'll work on my other gnex, he says give it a try or pop the sim in first and see if it works. And to my surprise just putting the sim in actually worked! Now instead of me being pissed and having 1 bad nexus my gf and I are enjoying our ice cream sandwiches. Hope this helps you.

So by giving the Verizon Representative my IMEI # minus the last number....which seems to be what the MEID number is basically when looking in the settings of the phone; but anyways by doing that will allow it to activate? So in that process do I tell the person buying my phone to purchase a MicroSIM from VZW then activate over the phone?
Yes. Or they can do it in store but don't give it to the rep since they "know everything" and will want to put it in.

Heh, thanks for the input. I know I'm late responding...
I did buy a Nexus, all I did was take my regular sized SIM and cut it down with one of those cutters. Everything activated normally.
I had a feeling it would, just wanted to throw it out there and see if I was absolutely wrong or something. I had previously swapped my SIM between my phone and mifi without issues, so I figured I wouldn't have any issues even if there was a problem.
Thanks.
I have a galaxy note 4 i got through verizon then had some unfortunate events lead to being unemployed for a while which led to me defaulting on my verizon contract and later picking up a cheap amazon fire phone and signed up for ting. which works fine but i have this note 4 here which i tried to give back to verizon but they wouldnt take it so now ill spend awhile paying for it and i cant currently use it so i was wondering if there was a way to use it through ting, or at the very least unlock it to sell so i can rocoupe some of what i gotta pay verizon for it, any help is really appreciated.
The Verizon phone is already unlocked. Did you default on the account? If so it may have been blacklisted.
You will get GSM on ting. It is probably missing most of the LTE bands. You can just put your sim into it and see what works. You will need an adapter. The fire phone is nano and the Note is a micro sim.

thanks for the reply, if it has been blacklisted does that mean nothing can be done with it? should i try to get a ting sim for it?. i went into the settings to add a mobile netowrk and verizon is the only one it shows and the + sign is greyed out. is that because there is only a verizon sim in it or because its blacklisted?
When a phone is blacklisted, the EMI number will not allow the phone to activate with any chip. The way it was explained to me they do the same thing for stolen phones, so I don't think it can ever be revived again.

Anyone have the IMEI, ESN, or MEID number for the Nexus 5X(or 6P)?
verizonwireless (dot) com /b2c/nso/enterDeviceId.do
Looking to enter it in there to check if its "officially" compatible, I know it has CDMA compatibility but want to be sure.
I don't, but FWIW I called them today and they indicated (i) they aren't selling it but (ii) it will work on their network.

Not very good imo. I would think that cutting your current Verizon sim would work the best.

A simple way to get a nano SIM would be simply say you bought your buddies old iPhone 6 or Nexus 6 (Since both use nano SIM) and ask for one in store or if you're doing it over the phone ask for a new one to be shipped after telling that story. If you just come out and say it's for the 5x they might not give you one since it's not directly a Verizon device. If you do need to cut the SIM card down this works well http://www.amazon.com/Noosy-generation-Cutter-iPhone-Phones/dp/B009QTVG4K?tag=androidcentralb-20&m1k=d_ac
If you have any other questions feel free to ask !
Thanks, if I call Verizon and mention the nexus 6, will I be required to provide any specific numbers from the phone?

I went into a corporate store last week, told them I was an existing customer and needed a nano sim for a phone that I bought through a private transaction.
They asked me if I had the phone with me, I said no. They asked me for my phone number, and if it was an android or apple phone (?), I gave them my number and told them android, and a few moments later I was leaving the store with a new nano sim. No hassle at all.

No shouldn't need to, as mentioned below just tell them you don't have the device with you and you need a new nano SIM give your Verizon number if they ask for it and you should be good to go!
Same thing here, I'm a VZW employee and plan to use the nano sim from my iphone (ugh, I know) and slot it right into the 5x
Finally called Verizon and they are going to mail the sim, but I need to call and provide the device info to activate. Guessing that will not work.
Or you can activate a nano sim using a adaptor off amazon. They are cheap, other option is to cut your current sim down to size.

That's exactly what I did. I always get the smallest card available and use an adapter. Saves me the trouble going between sim sizes and activating.

Pretty sure its no big deal. As long as your a customer just walk in say you need a new sim and they will give you one..Im not even sure if they charge you for it.
The problem is activating the sim, they input details on the phone and it needs to be a Verizon approved device.

The usual work around from what I've seen in YouTube videos is they need to take a SIM from an device at the store that's already activated. Some stores know this and others don't.

When I sold my Nexus 6 to a guy on swappa he used the imei from a display device to activate his sim card on verizon I think. I can't believe that works but apparently it does. I wish it was that easy to bring a phone to sprint. On Sprint the imei numbers have to actually be white listed in the system which always seems to lead to problems on launch day. Due to these phones being compatible with project fi I am hoping all of those numbers are already in the system since they need to be able to work on sprint's network for project fi I assume.
Day 1 - Verizon won't "Activate"
Hey guys,
Got my 5X yesterday and ran into a few problems. Still using the old phone for now, but I'm optimistic.
Nano SIM required:
Went to the Verizon store since my S5 uses a Micro SIM. They gave me a Nano but couldn't "Activate" it (see IMEI issue). They postulated if you pulled a Nano SIM from an already activated device (S6, iPhone 6, etc) on your account it may just plug and play, but this wasn't available to me. None the less they gave me the nano SIM and I proceeded to call the tech guys on the phone.
IMEI not in Verizon's Database:
After 3 transfers I finally got to a guy with his head on straight and he confirmed the IMEI isn't in Verizon's database (Deja vu anyone?). We spent a bit of time reviewing the 5X specs (bands) and he confirmed there is no reason why it shouldn't be allowed. Something tells me Big Red intentionally didn't import the device into their database in advance out of spite of the good ole Nexus history. Tech Support was very positive though and placed a request with the big wigs to add the device to the database and allow me to activate as a "new device". Hoping to get a response in the next 24-72 hours. Looks like my 18 years of loyal (Verizon) service is getting more pushing power than I did with the Nexus 5...
I'll keep you guys posted.

Hi man. Dude just find a phone that uses the nano sim. Activate your new sim and put it in the 5X.
I have Verizon and Had the Sony Z3V which uses a Nano sim. I simply pulled the sim out of my Z3v and put it in my 5X. Been using it since Tuesday perfectly. Love the phone on The best COVERAGE network
Pulled the nano Sim from my iPhone and plugged it into the Nexus with no issues. VZW seems to recognize it On my Verizon as an LG device as well
I'm a VZW customer and when the device arrived I called CS. They said the device is on their whitelist and he could send me a SIM. I said that I would drive over to the store and get one. I showed up at a corporate store and 5 minutes after being helped my phone has been on VZW without any issues.
Did anyone else have trouble activating their device on At&t? I gave them the IMEI and the representative said that it is not recognized as a smart phone in their system. Some BS.
Just popped the sim card out of my moto X, and into the 5x. Worked without any hassle. Didn't have to call them or anything.

I used a sim that I cut to micro sim, then to a nano sim when I got the phone but I didn't get LTE since its an old sim. Went to the store and got a nano sim, activated it over the phone and gave them the imei worked fine. This was the first weekend when phones were shipping.

I had an issue... I use it as my work phone, so I asked them to activate it. However, they came back a couple of hours later noting that they were unable to do it and that our AT&T rep suggested taking it into a corporate store. I did and they were able to activate it over the phone (stores can't mess with corporate accounts directly). Didn't hear why they were unable to do it through the usual channels. Good luck.

I got it resolved. When i went in the store, the rep told me that my unlimited data plan had been taken off. He put it back on and everything was working. At&t is on some bullsh*t! Must be mad, Google is selling it unlocked
I had no problems when I walked in to the AT&T store (not authorized retailer, actual AT&T owned).
I told the rep that I needed to switch phones. Handed him my new Nexus 5X, commented it needed a nano sim, he grabbed one, scanned the barcode on the back of the phone, waited for his system to update, popped in new sim and within a few seconds the "LTE" came up and he said when it finished (initial) booting I would be good to go, I could hang out until then or leave if I needed to. He was correct. When I look online at my AT&T account my phone shows as an unknown device. - wait, just logged in to double check the terminology, it now is back to showing my old Galaxy S4.... that's strange. I clicked "manage my device" and it comes up with no phone image and just says "DEVICE". Either way, just go get a new SIM, they will scan the code and it will be golden.
I searched this answer and did not find a clear one....Has anyone taken their SIM card from their Nexus 5 and used it in a Nexus 5X on Sprint?
If so how did it go?
Won't work.
5x uses nano sim 5 uses micro sim.
Get a new sim from verizon (nano)
I found this out the hard way.
Found this out myself when the 5x arrived. The local phone shop cut my sim to size for £1.
As others have said the SIM cards are different( Nexus 5 uses a MicroSIM. Nexus 5X uses a NanoSIM). Also, despite having a SIM card, Sprint is still a CDMA network and with a CDMA network the phone's ESN has to be added to Sprint's system. You could get a Nexus 5 with the ESN already in Sprint's system because Sprint sold the Nexus 5 directly. However, Sprint does't currently sell the Nexus 5X directly so in addition to getting a NanoSIM(or just cutting your MicroSIM) you'd also have to get Sprint to add the ESN of your Nexus 5X to their system and I've heard that can be a huge pain in the ass. It certainly is on Verizon.
Hey you might want to check this out it should help you http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/1...when-activating-an-unlocked-device-on-sprint/
Tried to activate my 5X on launch day at a Sprint store. They didn't have the correct nano SIM on-hand so they shipped one to my house for free. Online activation wouldn't work so I did a chat with support and they had me up and running in about 10 min
Same here. Had Sprint sent out a micro SIM but only after they sent out a nano SIM by mistake, even after I confirmed that is was for a 5x.
Online activation didn't work. A call to Sprint had things running pretty quickly.
Side note: for some reason the *28 code didn't work to let me get Google Voice to work. Looked online, and saw this site that gave a fix. After wasting a lot of time with the first rep, I got transferred to someone else who knew what she was doing and got Google Voice running. *28 still doesn't seem to work on my end, but she manually got the no answer/declined call/busy calls forwarded to Google Voice.
