can a verizon galaxy nexus be sim unlocked?

the verizon version of the galaxy nexus has a sim slot could the be unlock? i see them selling the same verizon phone on ebay and it says unlock

The Verizon gnex will only work on Verizon. No exceptions.

I think i need it sim unlocked so i can use it over wifi, because i moved to alaska and i use my google voice number. I need it sim unlocked because when i try to make a call it wont let me because it cant reach the verizon network at the same time as it trys to reach the wifi network.

Does Verizon not have service in your area of Alaska? Either way, a SIM unlock won't help, because as noted earlier here, the Verizon GNex won't work on another network.
You need a cell network to make calls on Google Voice though, unless you want to use a 3rd party app to bridge the cap and make VOIP calls over WiFi. By default, GV will not make calls over WiFi.

I was in Alaska last month and used my Verizon Nexus several times while on Wi-Fi using Groove IP. Verizon coverage in Alaska is pretty bad though.

Switch to airplane mode, then turn on WiFi.

Just like I said before... Google Voice is not a VOIP service!!! By default, Google Voice is simply a call forwarding service. It just places calls via the normal cell network and routes them to make it look like they're coming from your GV #. It uses minutes and can't be used directly over data on the phone.
If you want to make calls on your GV # on just data, you need to use a computer (via Google Talk) or use a VOIP application that uses the Google Talk protocol to make calls on your phone. Simple popular apps for this are GrooVe IP and Talkatone. Chances are if you need to make lots of calls these won't work well enough for you to rely on them.

Like i said I agree with all,
I am however glad i can use the wifi with airplane mode I thank you for the ViOp it made a bunch of sense seeing as how i've had to set that up before. I might do it i might not I can text i never talk so it's really cool!

I love internet lore! No, they do not have to let you out of your contact. They may still do it as a courtesy in some exceptional cases, but it is not the norm and they are under absolutely no obligation to do so.

Texting over wifi

I have international texting plan and I'm going to be traveling overseas. I know if I use wifi calling feature and call back to US it's not going to overcharge me. I called T-Mobile and asked them if same applies to texting but no one seems to know the answer for sure. Would it charge me extra if I have wifi calling enable and I'm texting an international number from overseas, since I've international texting plan?

Yes but google voice only works in U.S. As soon as you cross the border to canada or a different county google voice, hulu and bunch of other stuff doesn't work. Even some of my amazon apps won't work if I am in a different county.

This is just a shot in the dark. I need to update my sim card to use wifi calling, and i cant remember if your phone will allow a call in airplane mode (to turn your radio off) with wifi on. if it does maybe you can test the same for texts.
Upon further review it seems data must be on even for wifi calling....maybe theres an app out there that can help you out

Google voice doesn't work in Canada. I guess my question is if we have wifi calling feature on, the phone is not using its own data but the text msgs is routed thru wifi, so I shouldn't be charged for those text since I have unlimited international texting. Am I correct?

I just came back from canada 2 weeks ago and was using google voice perfectly fine. I was using it for calls though, not texts.

I am currently in the Dominican Republic, and google voice works just fine here. I am not able to setup a new account here but as long as the account was made in the U.S. first, then it can be used when going over sees.

there are plenty of alternatives, but to answer the original question, yes, it will charge you extra. Wifi calling does not support sms.

Actually Im in Canada right now and wifi calling works awesome. I have been calling and texting from the airports, coffee shops and hotels using their wifi. As of right now, I checked my account on TMobile.com and there is no additional charges.
If I am correct, after registering on tmobile network, wifi calling routes ur calling thru wifi instead of using a cell tower. During the wifi calling feature enables, ur cell tower is disabled so ur texting should be routed thru wifi also.
Please correct me if I m wrong.

That is how it works and sms messages are routed through wifi too but it wouldnt be the first time a carrier found a way to charge for services not rendered, remember att and charging people for using data over wifi. I think you should be able to swing a credit if they do try to charge you. In the future you could use a vpn to your home in the us and use gv or whatever free.

To be honest tmobile has been very good to me so far. I switched to tmobile from AT&T cuz of their really bad customer service. Google voice works good too but I hate to explain to people why I'm calling/texting from a different number. Aspecially when I travel without informing my boss lol.

Tmo has been good to me too but I dont want to forget what carriers are capable of, dont want to get blindsided.

I have tmo and another simple mobile phone that I use for international calling. Some girls I work with already think that I'm a drug dealer cuz I carry 2 phones...I can't imagine how would I explain google voice number to them. They are not very tech savvy and I don't think they would understand how a virtual google voice number would work. Do you guys ever struggle sometimes explaining tech stuff to friends or coworkers?

I just told them dont bother sending mms email the pic to me or google+ messneger which should be the native google voice app. Still wondering why google just doesnt fuse talk ,messenger and voice or at least have google+ voice integration

[Q] SMS/Phone support on LTE version?

I've heard the original 3G Nexus 7 could send/recieve texts so I was thinking about replacing my nexus 4 with my 6 because I don't make many phone calls these days - just need a device for texting, browsing, and reading.
Could someone with the LTE version try installing the sms/dialer app and see if they work?

ive read that 4g only transmits internet, and no texts or calls can be made on it

WELL. If you wana get fancy, you can use a voip app if you wana make calls. Google voice will let you send text over wifi/data. It just doesn't do mms messages.

I can text on my wifi model now using this app called tablet talk u can even dial a number or call somebody and itll start ringing on your phone its a neat app

kinda wanted to skip the also-own-a-phone part

So, my plan is to purchase the lte version of this tablet on Verizon. Then use Google Voice to make calls and receive texts(replacing my SGN2 on occasion). Does anybody have any idea how much monthly data I should purchase(I will also be streaming music, browsing the web and social networks regularly).
And if anyone knows the rough amount of data used to make a voice call(to another phone) using Google Voice, I would love to know!

So more than just 4G. Although I'm not sure where the no texts/calls on 4G comes from. If you could provide source I'd love to see it.
Unless you meant the Nexus 7 4G is Internet only and no text/calls:
If the cell chips are the same as the Nexus 4/Optimus G I'd love to see someone enable the calling features on the N7 2013. Although as We've seen with the N7 2012 that might be a difficult task.

You know - it's really frustrating when someone answers a question with what I'm sure to the person writing it seems to be a relevant and helpful comment - but has completely missed the point of the original question.
For example: the question here is essentially: The old Nexus could send texts/SMS - could someone install the dialer/message app on the new model with LTE and test this. A related question is 'can you use the cell model to do voice calls?'
In both cases, it should be clear that a part of the question is implied: 'in the same way you can do with a regular cellphone'. In fact, the guy actually SAYS this.
The actual correct answer is: no one has a Nexus 7 2013 LTE yet, so we just don't know.
"You can use application X to do VoiP" isn't actually a valid unless you start with "no - you can't do voice calls using the 3G or LTE radios, but..." because the question isn't 'is there ANY way to make a regular phone call on a tablet that doesn't support voice calls'.
Similarly "You can use application Y to do something kind of like texting/SMS" isn't a valid answer unless it can actually text or SMS to a phone that doesn't run a special app, or receive a text/SMS from a phone that's not running that app.
Or.. "Can you attach a USB Stick to the Nexus 7 2013 using an OTA USB cable?" It's safe to assume the user means 'without completely rearranging, rooting or flashing the Nexus'. So the actual answer is "no, no you can't." You could THEN follow up with "But if you're willing to..." Not everyone wants to put custom roms on their system or root it... so that's not an 'obvious' answer and it's really annoying when someone says 'yes! you can!' and then moves onto a page of instructions on how to modify your stock device to install all sorts of unknown and potentially dangerous software to get this one feature to work.
Oh and before someone says it - because someone will - yes, XDA is targeted to developers and experimenters - but XDA has become a trusted place for people to come and look for help even when they're not developers and experimenters. You can generally tell who these people are because they ask questions like 'can you use your Nexus 7 2013 LTE as a phone?' The regulars here already know that you can't use the 2012 model for that - and that the odds are low that the 2013 will let you do it either and so wouldn't be asking that question.
So at least try to make the answers match the audience or perhaps hold off answering until it makes more sense?

Picked up my LTE nexus 7 today in Australia.
Inserted my SIM card.
Installed Go SMS Pro.
Can send & receive standard SMS text messages via my mobile number.

I called my phone number from my friend's iPhone and my mobile number was ringing when listening to the iPhone ... but nothing was happening on the nexus 7 LTE.
I tried to do this to get a dialler "install QuickShortcutMaker and make a shortcut to it. Search "phone" in the app. It should be the first result, under contacts."
But cannot find a dialler

I'm thinking of selling my n4 and buy a N7.
If that works I'm in
If not I'm gonna buy a Wi-Fi N7 either..

I tried again using quickshortcutmaker ... the following shortcuts are possible when searching for 'dial':
Heading = Mobile Data .com.android.phone
Mobile Data - Emergency Dialer .com.android.phone/com.android.phone.EmergencyDialer
Mobile Data = Fixed Dialing Numbers .com.android.phone/com/android.phone.FdnSetting
Mobile Data = EcmExitDialog .com etc etc
Emergency Dialer - did permit me to try a local call
Fixed Dialing Numbers - had a few options = disable FDN, change PIN2, FDN list

4g LTE phone calls experience need opinion

I would like no know this too as I just got the 4G LTE and text messaging works flawlessly, except phone calls as it gives me busy signal on all calls that are made. Don't know what's wrong. The sim card is activated and everything works as it should. Except phone calls..

There's really not a lot to talk about. The SM-P601/5 are just giant phones. Anything a N3 can do, they can do. Dialers and MMS/SMS are pretty much the same on every phone and the SM-P601/5 are no exception.
Here's a screen shot...
P.S. - In order to use the voice and messaging features the SM-P601/5 have to be provisioned by your carrier as "phones." Tablet-specific data plans don't support calls or MMS even though the device is capable.

I was waiting for a response and didn't get anyone to chime in so I finally got my note 10.1 p605 so here goes yes you need to get a sim with voice and data plan it will work. I'm currently using it as my phone at the moment and it rocks!

I have the SM-P605 4G LTE and I couldn't figure out how to make phone calls on this device. Can you help?

Is your SM-P605 from a carrier or Samsung? The U.S. carriers and possibly some others disable voice and MMS and always have in the tablets they offer. If you don't see the Dialer and Messaging apps when you look in the app drawer I'm guessing they've been disabled in whatever version of SM-P605 you have. If you see them and can't use them that means the SIM you're using probably doesn't support voice and MMS. They're either there out-of-the-box or they aren't. If they aren't there's not a lot you can do about it.

I got mine from the Verizon store. I downloaded a Dialer app from Google Play and tried to make a call, but still no go. The app brought up a Dialer, but when I punch in a telephone number, and press Send, it just beeps and does nothing. The Sim card was from my 4G LTE phone. I swapped it over.
I was, however, able to make calls using Google Voice & Groove IP. But man, I would just love to be able to make calls just like a phone.

No Data While on Calls

When on 4G or 3G when in voice calls I cant use or get data and get a message that pops up saying I need to use WIFI for data while on calls. Please tell me there is a work around.

Have you actived your advanced calling feature?

No is it required now? Never had to do this on M8 or any other verizon device.

For simultaneously data yes. Just got to settings an hit advance calling an follow prompts.

Am on business account cant just enable it on phone. Had to use web portal to enable it. Annoying. However its working now thanks.

Not really sure why this is but I have a suspicion. M8 was supposedly VoLTE compliant, but the settings lacks the "Advanced Calling" section that the M9 ROM has (carriers mess with this all the time; for instance, I was looking at an AT&T M9 yesterday and for the life of me could not find the "power" settings section).
I also have a business account and had to have an agent turn on advanced calling to get the M9 to work this way.
I suspect that Verizon wants to have the option to *charge* for the "feature." That's the only reason I can think they'd break it out separately.

Verizon has no reason to charge for HD calling. While the voice portion is unlimited for most accounts, if you use the video calling it is not. It counts towards the data allowance unless it's used over WiFi. Verizon wind with increased data plans or overage charges.
I personally love the feature, I mostly talk with my LG Tones, and the HD calling is amazingly loud and crystal clear. Good stuff. As has been noted, if you lose LTE/WiFi during an HD call, it will drop. That goes for either side, as both parties have to be capable for it to work at all anyway.

Under the tech bulletin here at work, it states the M9 has a single radio unlike the M8 which has a dual radio which allowed for simultaneously calls and data on 3g or 4g (SVDO).
SU1 releasing in June 2015 will fix this and show 1x during a phone call and not the 4g lte symbol as it currently shows on the M9.
So without advanced calling you cannot do this. This is a bummer as I loved this feature.
Disadvantages of advanced calling is if you lose your 4g while going into a building your call drops. unlike traditional calling is handled on the 1x network.
