[How To] Install OTA and root.

I've seen and answered this question quite a few times so I thought I'd just write down the procedure once so everyone can find it.
So you want the latest OTA and want it rooted but you have no idea how to get there? I can help.
Prior to yesterday I was running rooted stock with TWRP recovery. The OTA failed of course.
In order to install it and root I did the following.
1) install rooted stock image via odin (found at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426) This re-nstalled stock recovery.
2) install and run voodoo ota root keeper from the play store to preserve root.
3) took OTA download and let it install
4) ran voodoo OTA rootkeeper to restore root again
5) Install goo manager from play store
6) install twrp via goo manager
7) made a rooted stock nandroid backup.
The above procedure didn't wipe any of my data or settings because I came from rooted stock to begin with. I just used odin to restore the recovery and missing bloatware..

I didn't use ADB. I used twrp for my recovery, but you can install rom manager and cwm recovery with it instead of goo manager and twrp.

I lost my root when i did the update...
can you give step by step on how to root again after the update and install the google universal search?

If you've disabled or uninstalled stock at&t and Sammy apps (like Flipboard, clocks, etc.) the update will fail. You need to enable/reinstall stock apps.

Hi, I used Voodoo Root Keeper to regain root. However, in my device status it is now saying modified instead of normal. How can I fix that?

You can't. Don't worry about it.

It looked like reflashing the rooted stock rom did reinstall the bloat I removed.

Reboot
Done deal
It does work. I tested earlier today from G1 stock unrooted. Pulled and installed the update, flashed CWM. Flashed the attached file, busybox download and profit. Then used gooomanager to change to TWRP

Yes, it does work. Get a custom recovery back (CWM) and flash the file I attached in my earlier post. Saves the time from flashing a stock rooted ROM and going from there as a starting point.

Root Method #1:
The first thing you should try is CF-Autoroot since this has worked for many users.
If you successfully root with this method, you can simply install Goo Manager or ROM Manager and install recovery.
This method failed for me after many attempts.

Root Method #2:
1) Reboot in to download mode
2) Flash TWRP with Odin via PDA
3) Reboot to recovery then flash SuperSu and the Knox Remover
4) Reboot
5) Download SuperSu from the Play Store
6) Open SuperSu and update the binary when prompted
7) Reboot
8) Enjoy rooted 4.3/4/4

Noob here, first off I unrooted a while ago, then took the ota 4.3, is the bootloader locked? Cause according to the cf auto root site if your bootloader is locked you'll probably brick your phone if you flash the auto root? Also do these steps have to be in order? I tried rooting by other means and installing supersu first, wouldn't work so I removed knox with the script, and then updated supersu in the play store and still nothing, can I try to flash cf auto root now and then update supersu in the play store? Thanks a million, need this thing rooted

Well, I'm not bricked, so I think that answers your question about the bootloader.
Do you have a custom recovery installed? I assume so since you say you flashed the Knox remover script. If you do have a custom recovery installed, just flash the SuperSu zip, then update in the Play Store.

Ah it is so nice to have root again... Thank you so much for putting up with a noob.
Crazy events of a noob that lead me to root
Installed ota 4.3
Tried to root and install superuser by odin and then custom recovery to flash
Root didn't happen because of knox
Could only get to CWM custom recovery if it was right after odin and battery pull?...
Flashed the script to remove knox, which did remove knox
Tried the same root method as above and no root access
Tried supersu and then updating in play with no success
Changed security update settings etc nothing
Reset delvik, cache, permissions, etc nothing
Different root method and files for odin, and custom recovery stuck
Used files from this thread, went into custom recovery and flashed supersu
Installed supersu from play store...
Updated the binary using custom recovery
Rebooted...
ROOT access, all root applications work fine and root sticks even after reboots
I never messed with cf auto root method

Hi, I'm a little nervous with this root but I need the root as the phone is useless without it.
I have the [email protected] galaxy s3 I747 will all these files work with it im just double checking.
Also do you flash the knox remover the same way as you flash other things with the pda button?
Will I still be able to do factory restores?
Also I saw that knox remover removes a lot of apps, Can you install these deleted apps from the market if you need too?

Dunno where you guys got your 4.3 update from and how you got it working but I did the OTA and Root just does not want to stick. I used knox remover and Cf auto root but it loses root after a restart. SuperSu never opens and crashes as soon as you open it. I have a feeling Cf auto root is just not compatible for the ota 4.3 i747??

The second method worked great. I believe (and the way that worked for me) that you use your custom recovery to flash the knox script, not using Odin and pda. I don't think it removed anything other than knox, there is a different script for removing knox and att bloatware. Should still be able to factory reset... But can't guarantee that.

Root & Knox
When you go to Settings/More tab/Security/Device Administrators, You have KNOX and Android Device Manage. Both are unchecked on mine. So does that mean Knox is not working if unchecked and safe to try to Root?????

Those settings are just for granting device administrator privileges. If unchecked, Knox is still doing it's thing, just not at an administrative level.
Yes, it is safe to try and root.
I have Android Device Manager as admin. That way if I ever lose my device I can just log in to the Play Store and locate and / or wipe the device.

To do this just flash the recovery.img file using odin and clicking the pda button correct?

Is there a way to freeze Knox instead of deleting it in the event I would want to go back to full stock?

After you are rooted, use an app like Titanium Backup(pro) or My Backup pro. Both will freeze it.

I tried method 1 and failed.
Then tried method 2, but using a CMW tar that was posted yesterday.
I seem to be rooted!
So far no issues.. Just need to get everything setup as I had it in the leak.

Thanks indymx, may get the nerve up to try it on my AT&T S3. Let me know if you run into any problems. Guess Rom Manager and other programs that require Root are working Ok and you have rebooted few times to be sure it keeps Root?? Have Happy Thanksgiving.

Hello, I've tried to root my phone by various method available but in vain..
After I did it with CF root and Odin, I got security message on the phone when trying to open superSU (unrespond close).
Also, when verify the root access through rood checker, it says wasn't root properly..
Please help..anyone able to do it?
I've already increase my binary count to 2 and knox to 1. :/

As far as it goes I think after rooting it with CFroot you should update the SuperSU from the Playstore.

Hello, I was trying to update my note 2 with DN3 kitkat rom today.. But didn't work! :/
I rooted the phone. I got correct root access.
Then followed the instruction to flash the ROM.
After reboot, I could hear the welcome sound(new) and saw the samsung animated logo..then it stuck there. I waited for some 15mins, but nothing happened, only the animated samsung logo.
I saw an issue in TWRP.. saying there was a problem with permission. I don't know what was it. I tried to fix permission, but it failed.
After nothing worked, now I am in the process of recovery from kies.
Perhaps I didn't have the right step by step guide; from rooting the phone to flashing it. :/
If someone could please help, would be great!.. I really want to flash my phone for the DN3 custom rom.

Why do you need to root when flashing custom rom? It is already prerooted. You only need recovery.

As per rooting instruction, it is mentioned that the device must be rooted before flashing a custom rom from stock rom.
While installing the recovery the device is rooted or another way that I tried was to root by CFroot first, which was successfully done then I got the super user access to install a recovery like TWRP,,

As far as i know for latest 4.4.2 stock roms,
Try to flash philz advance recovery(md5.tar) through odin & then flash su.zip from recovery.

I am looking to install ClockworkMod (CWM) recovery version 6.0.3.2 on to my T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S4 (SGH-M919) as described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2264637. I tried to install the CWM recovery via the Rom Manager app linked in the thread mentioned, and I got a notification indicating root was required.
So, that is my question - Is root required to install ClockworkMod recovery on to my SGH-M919? Isn't it possible to install the CWM recovery on to my SGH-M919 without having to root my phone by flashing it directly through Odin?
For reference, I have listed the details of my phone below:

No, as in root IS required in order to install ClockworkMod recovery on to my SGH-M919?

Rooting is the lesser of the two evils.
A custom recovery maybe semi functional without root, especially if installing a custom rom that requires changes to files, permissions or build prop edits in order for it to work properly.
Root on the other hand gives you a broad spectrum of functionality allowing you total control of your phone, operating system and access to customize your rom of choice the way you want it.
In this world, you root then you have the option of custom or stock recovery.
And yes, typically you need root to flash CWM recovery.

You only need root if you are wanting to flash CWM via ROM Manager, if you're just wanting to flash CWM (in order to flash a new ROM), this is the guide I used: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_jflte#Recovery_Installation

It sounds complicated for a novice flasher that doesn't understand "root" .
And beware of rom manager.
Google it.

Let me ask this, another user mentioned that if you were to flash ClockwordMod recovery in Odin with no root than CWM recovery would not function as needed since it would need some permissions only available if the phone was rooted - is this true? The reason I ask is because it is not mentioned anywhere on the ClockworkMod site that root is required.

You wouldn't be able to use apps like ROM Manager, Flashify, etc. to send commands from within Android to CWM without root, as those apps require root; but CWM will work fine if you boot into recovery and run your commands there.
What is it you are looking to do? In all honesty, I don't see the point in installing a custom recovery if you are not also going to root your device.

Not true, it should function as it should

Root allows all apps that require root to function! Apps that will allow immediate power down, sms/mms backups, timed reboots, having a simple way to manage (AND NAME BACKUPS) With text that will show date created rather than what the application (like CWM) uses. The date will look odd if you just boot to recovery and ,let CWM assign the filename of the recovery. Rooting affords MANY possibilities that would not be possible without root. It will also, allow you whether knowingly, or unintentionally wiping out the os to become non functional. Root gives you TOTAL controlability. You can make almost any change you want, but wrong moves could render the decice un-usable without first recovering a previous backup, or restoring a completely new factory install. If you're not backed up, be very carefull what you change. Also rogue apps can put you out of business as well since the system will allow any changes to occurr. Rooting removes the rules of anything that controlls the device's operation. It sorta kills all the cops of your phone's system, and makes you God. LOL
In my case, if I were not able to root my decice, I'd most likely go iPhone as 99% of their apps work , like the author says it will. Apple screens and tests each offered app whereas, android is a crapshoot! Hope I answewed your question without scaring you off !!!!!?

Lost Root Privilege and recovery set to default.

Good morning...
I've had my S6 with 6.0.1 "CDP2" "rooted and with twrp 3 for about one week.
However late last nite I noticed I lost root. "There is no SU binary installed and Supersu cannot install it".
Recovery was updated and default was installed..
I tried to root again, successfully "stated by ODIN" re-boots and goes through the phase as establishing TWRP, then default recovery is re-installed...
Any ideas ?

I have run into the exact same issue. Lost root with latest security update yesterday and can't seem to get it back

I was able to regain root. My mistake was trying to flash an older SuperSU. When I flashed the 2.71 version everything went fine. I did loose root after the OTA just needed to flash the right SuperSU to regain it.

I also need to flash new Super SU. But my recovery is not TWRP. It's Android recovery and has 3 options for Install update : Through ADB, External storage or Cashe. Which option to choose?

Flash the latest CF-Auto root, then flash TWRP. CF-AUTO root will knock out the kernels protections and allow you to flash TWRP.

Same thing happened to me. I had an OTA security update, lost root, but reflashed 2.71 SuperSu using TWRP to regain root.
