Complete noob thinks he may have softbricked his phone - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Hi guys. Brand new to this whole rooting thing. Long story short, I rooted my device (Galaxy S3 sgh-t999) a while back and was just living off stock touchwiz just with all the bloatware deleted. I had the most recent version of TWRP installed and my recovery was based on that. I then downgraded TWRP to 2.3.3.0. It asked me to reboot and I did so. Now I'm stuck at the Samsung logo screen but it doesn't get past that. The device seems to boots up, but the moment the little Samsung jingle starts to play (you know the swirly blue mist that encompasses the Samsung logo), it stops in the middle of the jingle and the phone won't get passed it.
I tried rebooting back into TWRP via up, home, power and was able to get into TWRP recovery good enough, I can access everything in the menu and tried wiping dalvik, cache, factory reset and system and restored from my backup, but upon trying to restore from my custom backup, it just stalls on the Samsung logo screen. Any ideas if this is fixable? Sorry if this is in the wrong forum guys.
Also, I should make mention that whenever I try to hard power off my phone by holding down the power button, it turns off for a moment then boots back on again. I actually have to remove the battery in order for the phone to turn off. Don't know if that helps.

That's normal when you hold the power button down. It's a hard reset so it's supposed to boot back up.
As for your other issues, why did you downgrade twrp? If your backup was made with another version I suggest using the same to restore it.
Most of the time a factory reset will fix this type of problem, but it sounds like we are beyond that now. If the restore and another reset don't work, go to my firmware thread (sticky in development) and download the same or newer firmware as what you had before. Flash via Odin and factory reset from the stock recovery. ( This will wipe the internal sd)
That should get you going again.
For the future, please do not ever manually wipe /system. You could end up with no O/S to boot into and a hell of a headache! There is simply no benefit to doing so. Only risk.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
Good luck!

I downgraded TWRP because I was having issues flashing a new ROM. Every ROM I tried flashing came up with an error and people said they were most successful with 2.3.3.0 so I tried it out. I suspected it might have screwed something up but stupid me always has to be sure. I would try and re-use an upgraded TWRP version if possible but I don't think I can access that from the TWRP menu itself and that's just about the only function my phone has at this point. Just booting into TWRP and playing around with the menu.
Do you have a link to your thread? Thanks for the time by the way.

The link should be in my sig. But it's stickied at the top of the development section. Can't miss it.
If you go to twrp's Web page you can download a newer one in .zip format and flash from your current version.
Or get the .tar.md5 one and flash from Odin.
In the newer versions you can actually flash the .img file itself. After choosing install and are browsing for the file, look for a button to use the .img.
I don't believe this is available in the older ones though.

Yup! It was really a simple matter of updating TWRP via Odin. I don't know why it never crossed my mind to use it. Maybe I'll have more luck using different ROMs through Odin instead of TWRP as well.

Odin is really only just for flashing full firmware for updates and returning to stock, and for flashing recovery. Pretty much everything else (all custom roms, for example) is meant to be flashed in a custom recovery like twrp. If you're ever unsure, reread the op of whatever you're flashing, and if your answer isn't there feel free to ask about it.
In a nutshell: Odin only flashes .tar and .tar.md5 files. Recovery flashes .zip.
I do highly recommend an app called Mobile Odin by chainfire. Search xda for his thread and make sure you read all the info if you're interested. It can make flashing super easy!

I am having a similar issue. I have never modified any of the original specs and this is a new issue as of 48 hours ago. In short, my device was on, auto shutdown and then froze on the Galaxy S3 load screen. Attempts to boot in recovery, safe, and soft/hard reset have not worked. I can access Odin mode. After reading the above thread I went to the link you suggested and went directly to the firmware my SGH-T999 started with(T999UVDLJA) and worked my way up the list to see if any of them would take. Unfortunately none achieved a 'PASS' via Odin. So, my question is, what do you do when all the steps have been followed and the firmware doesn't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What error are you getting in Odin?
Do you see anything about warranty bit on the download screen? If you are, the flash is probably failing because you are trying to flash old firmware over new firmware. I suggest flashing the latest firmware for your T999 from here: http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SGH-T999/

please help - clockworkmod backup rom problem

ok so, i just rooted my phone and that went fine. did it with the stock rom, but after I did that I installed clockwork mod. well, i tried to do a back up of the current rom and when it rebooted it crashed. now it comes up to the android system recovery screen but it won't let me select anything...... can anyone help?!?!?
i am freaking out here... did i brick my phone?!?!?! anyone????
I don't know why you're having a problem or what caused it but you certainly didn't brick your phone. You can always flash a new ROM in clockwork or use odin to flash the stock .tar.
edit: missed the part about not being able to select anything in recovery. All is not lost, just flash the stock EG31 .tar with odin and you'll be fine. You're gonna have to reroot and set everything back up again (I've done it twice today) but at least you will still have a phone. Try just flashing the kernel first, maybe you can get it to boot without losing anything.
everytime i reboot the phone it just comes back to this android system recovery screen. it's blule, at the bottom is says manual mode. and something sucsessfull but, it won't let me selelect any of the options and it keeps booting to this screen... where can i download odin? i keep seeing stuff about that, i guess i need to flash to a rom or something....
edit: cool, yeah.. can you show me where to download what your talking about??
thank you!!
get odin here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274337
stock tar here- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351761
Read the guides if you aren't familiar with using odin. Good luck.

[Q] please help. Think I bricked y phone

I was running Hyperdrive and ota update came out so i downloaded it to the phone and installed it. it updated ok but it wiped everything off the phone. I had allot of valuable info especially my passwords and usernames and bank info in the app M Secure. So....I did tell it to back up my info before starting the update. so I went into recovery ( TWRP) to go back to the old version. when the process was done it said it was successful and I hit the reboot button. It never rebooted, just turned off and now it wont come back on. not even into recovery, Any Ideas would be appreciated.Thanks.

I'd start with a clean slate. If you have a custom recovery then take that, wipe everything and then re-flash last known stable version. If the recovery is gone then start with Odin flash of the recovery in download mode.

Thanks. It seems my recovery is gone so im going to try start over with Odin,
After running hyperdrive, it may not boot without a factory reset once you Odin flash the Stock firmware.
Alternatively, you can first try to flash CWM or TWRP with odin, then try again to get into it. If that doesn't help, then go with the stock firmware.

Dude i had the same problem the first time i flashed hyper drive my fix was i had to load a stock firmware for our phone non rooted and reformat using the pit file for our phones i dont know why it happened but it got probresivly worse and its wierd becasue mine would stay on in download mode if i kept pressing the power button. Befor some says that was my issue bs because as soon as i reset my phone with the stock tar and pit file the probl disapeared.
First off, i want to thank those of you who have helped me out. I am going to go back to stock with odin but its been a while since i used Odin, I have 3.7 on my lap top now. I cant seem to find a food reference with the correct links to get the things i need to go back to stock or even to try to put in a new recovery. I also have both CWM folders and TWRP on the computer also. If anyone can point me in the right direction for a good guide on using Odin I would be grateful.I have looked and looked but everything I find is instructions for those who have a recovery, Thanks again
There's plenty of them here on xda. On this forum search for root66 , a thread by Mr Robinson. It has a good guide.

Rooted a Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 lite 7 SM t110" Thank You

I just rooted my new Tab today thanks to the helpful and complete instruction from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2674649
(3/10/2014) and it works beautifully and is very easy, The step by step instructions and detailed videos made this the easiest root I"ve ever done (which would make all of 2 now). It took all of about 10 min, excluding the hour or so I spent carefully rereading the procedure and watching the videos.
Thank you so much! I have root again!!!
Regarding a boot loop problem mentioned in another thread (I am not able to post in development threads yet so hopefully the author will see this)
I had the same thing happen to mine after installing cwm and rooting then attempting to create backups. I think it was the way I tried to boot into cwm, didn't wait long enough perhaps.
Anyway, I wound up flashing the stock firmware again, using Odin, then redoing the cwm install and rooting again. It worked like a charm for me.

I just had to do the whole process over again because my tab would keep dropping wifi (a common Samsung issue) I did a factory reset, forgetting the stock recovery was not on it any longer. It went right into the cwm bootloop again. I reflashed the stock firmware that I got from honai of androids blog in a link, using Odin.
Then reflashed the cwm, and rerooted. All is working again.
i will retry cm and root, glad to hear i wasnt aalone though i am not wishing anyone bad
Booting straight into recovery
I'm having the same issue as some on this forum. I have searched and searched but cannot find stock firmware. The" honai of androids" lead was a dead end. Link appears to be broken. Can someone point me in the right direction? Samsung Galaxy tab3 7.0 lite.

I thought I'd posted the link to the stock firmware,
oops I cant post links yet, just google honai of android blogspot how to date galaxy tab 3 lite
It is a very slow d/l hosted by one of those "pay for fast download" sites. But the free d/l link works fine and it is the proper firmware, samsung sees it as official.
CAUTION: When rerooting, (Notice I didn't say if, I'm assuming anyone would naturally want to have root), when you boot into CWM, it takes a long time. I didn't wait long enough the first time I did it, and I think that may have something to do with the bootloop issue. I am going to install quickboot and try that.
Follow along with the detailed information and videos that were so well done by xda members. Ive done the whole process about 4 times now (when you do that first boot after flashing CWM, be sure and boot into recovery (again follow the video if you have any questions. The one on youtube posted by root junky, ots excellent.
What if the bootloop does not even allow me to get into recovery or download mode?
Any solutions?

I posted the files that you need to root and reset the custom binary counter.
1. Flash the Stock ROM
2. Install the OTA Updates. (NOTE= Don't install it later, it will bootloop in CWM.)
3. Flash CWM in Odin and then flash the SuperSU ZIP.
4. Flash Stock RECOVERY. (IMPORTANT)
5. Download Rashr and flash CWM image file.
6. Done!
Also don't press to boot in recovery mode. It will bootloop, duh.
All of the files are here: bit.ly/sm-t110-root

[Q] TWRP & No Os On my Samsung Galaxy S3 HELP!

I have Samsung At&T Galaxy S3. I bought it used and it worked fine for days until I dropped it and cracked the screen, However it still worked fine until it died. I plugged it in and went to turn it on and it took me to the Team Win recovery. When I try to go to recovery and then reboot it tells me there is no os installed and asks me if I want to install Super SU. If I go to install it takes me to the Odin downloading mode but that is it. Phone is Bricked and stays at the S III screen. HELP is there any hope for me!? I also tried to follow a forum that instructed the rooting of the phone using ODIN. I tried to use the link but couldn't and then I tried Chain fires way but still after 4 hours NO luck, could be me but I am as "Noob" as they come with this apparently. Can someone please help me!?
What ROM was the phone running before it was dropped? You could copy a custom ROM to a micro SD card and try flashing it from recovery.
Don't worry, your phone is not bricked.
Well, if it happened out of the blue like that, there is a possibility of a hardware problem.
Do as audit13 said and flash a ROM via recovery, preferably the same as what was on it before.

I was running I believe the Jelly Bean 4.3...SO I bought the phone from a person. They did not mention it having TWRP or anything else. It I think had something called Super SU too...not sure what that is. I have tried to flash in ODIN. nothing. I have also tried to flash a rom using an SD card it was the kit kat 4.4.4 but it says failed each time. I don't know what to do...

So I bought the phone from another person who failed to mention anything not stock about the phone! It came with I believe the jellybean 4.3 and something like super su. What is super SU? I have tried to flash the kit kat 4.4.4 to the phone with an sd card but it always says failed...I don't understand! I have been going out of my mind and reading and trying a but nothing is working!
SuperSU is part of your root access. Its an app that helps to manage root access from your other apps.
When the flash fails does it give you an error message? Try flashing again, but after it fails do not reboot. Go back to the Advanced menu and choose copy log to SD. Then attach the recovery.log here.

Yes I get an error message. Ok so I suppose I am still trying to grasp at the entire concept of all of this! So let me start here: I bought the phone as I said and it seemed fine. It didn't however have all the normal Google apps etc. and I wasn't sure why. 2 days later after purchase I dropped the phone. Screen cracked but for the rest of the day it worked fine. It died, I plugged it in at home and when I tried to turn it on it went straight to TWRP. I messed with the phone in recovery NOT understanding what I was doing and I think I may have wiped/deleted the Super SU off my phone, I don't know if it is rooted or anything anymore if it was rooted in the first place. I believe it was running Jellybean before this mess and since then I have tried to do multiple things to it including installing a ROM on an SD with gapps and flashing in TWRP but always get an error message. I did just try installing UPDATE-SuperSu back onto the flashing using an Sd and that installed but still couldn't flash a rom. I still cannot get past the Samsung S III screen and still the phone says no OS. So I suppose is there a way to start from scratch so...someone that can walk me through this. I am dying and DON'T want to spend the money the Phone stores want to fix my phone! I don't have a carrier like Sprint etc. I was using the phone with a sim card for straight talk. Please if I can try this I will! Thanks again for all your help...
Try flashing the MJB firmware via Odin on your computer. That should restore your device to fully working stock, provided there isnt a hardware problem.
Factory reset in recovery, then reboot download mode. Plug into your computer and run Odin v3.09. Click the AP button and select the firmware you downloaded. Should be a .tar.md5 file. Then click start.
You can get odin from my sig if needed.

So, I tried to do what you said but when I extract the files there is no tar md5 file, if I don't extract I can't see any of the MJB firmware. I don't know what I doing wrong...
Highlight/select all of the files at once. Then right click and extract. It should combine them all into the one.
If you're still having trouble with it, I'll try to do it for you. Been meaning to do this anyway to make things a little easier for folks. But it'll probably be at least Sunday night or Monday before I can do anything. (Funeral/family stuff has me tied up all weekend).

So I have tried SO many things now I can't even remember. I have tried flashing roms via SD card, I have tried to re-root the phone by flashing Super SU from an SD card no luck...I have tried to factory reset using the instructions you posted but upon extracting there is no tar md5 file. lots of others but not that one. My download screen says:
ODIN MODE
PRODUCT NAME: SGH I747
CUSTOM BINARY DOWLOAD: YES (2 COUNTS)
CURRENT BINARY: CUSTOM
SYSTEM STATUS: CUSTOM
QUAULCOM SECUREBOOT: ENABLE
WARRANTY BIT: 1
BOOTLOADER RP SWREV: 2
When I try to reboot my phone in TWRP it says, "NO OS" installed are you sure you wish to continue.
I will slide the deal towards yes/reboot and then it will say, "Your phone is not rooted do you wish to install Super SU" I will slide to install and it will go to download mode and look like the above. That's it. No successful flashing via SD or Odin...I am pooped. By the way I appreciate your time, and I am so sorry for your loss.
Still No Luck

I don't know what happened but I thought I had responded to this, I know its late but please accept my deepest condolences.
As for my phone I have tried EVERTHING I can think of, everything you have suggested as well and nothing is working. I Can download ODIN, I can download files and Md5. tar files but it always says failed...I don't know what to do or anything. I have been working on this for almost 2 months now. I need help, there is no cell phone repair here that can flash software except ONE company and they have a bad reputation...I want to start from scratch here because I am So turned around. I have tried so much I am just confused...If you can help me at all, step by step perhaps then I could get you the answers you need to help me. Really thank you for the time you have already given me.
I suggest using CWM to flash anything. I had issues with TWRP and Philz Touch worked perfectly. I have recommended it to other that had no OS on their phone and they were able to get their phone up and running on a custom ROM.

I apologize for not responding before. Been hard to keep up with everything lately.
Try as audit13 suggested and flash cwm or philz recovery with Odin. Then reboot recovery and flash a rom. Hopefully one of those will work where twrp failed.

Help...semibrick or not?

Hi,
All was good in the SM-T705 world rocking 5.0.2 Rooted Stock.
But one day, decided to take the plonge and update to the 5.1.1 Unnoficial CM12.1 to try things out.
Well, all was good, but kinda lost the 4G connectivity (even after flashing the radio file provided on the thread)
So i decided to try again something, and start from Stock again.
Got myself the latest 5.0.2 image from kies and "odin it away".
Everything ok with the flash, but the device remains on the boot screen ....meaning bootloop.
Never seen a bootloop on a stock flash.
When bootlooping, i can only access download mode/recovery. Nothing else works.
Any hints?
Thanks guys.
Bootloader maybe?

Idk ask a prof
Maybe flash the whole frimware via odin again
I advice you to download a stock firmware (or at least a TW based one) from here in the forum, instead of Kies.
You can try also first with a manual EXT4 reformat of System, Data and Cache though Recovery. Do NOT touch other partitions.
Then reinstall with Odin, NO tick on repartition.
It must work
Thank you guys for all your replies.
Thing is, i cant seem to be able to flash twrp. I do it through Odin and goea fine, but when it reboots it is overriding to the stock recovery again (since it can't complete the stock flash boot process)
That would be the desired scenario, since I even have a twrp backup that I'm wishing to restore.
Any other ideas?
You need to boot to twrp immediately after flashing or recovery will be overwritten with stock.
Second, once in recovery wipe data and you should be good to go.
