Backup for fingerprint unlock? - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The fingerprint sensor is one reason I might update my N5 to a 5x and I was wondering what unlock methods are provided if you can't get a good fingerprint read, such as when wearing gloves (gets cold in this part of the country!).

You can always fall back to the standard unlock methods (i.e. PIN, pattern, etc.)

When you setup the fingerprint scanner, you also set up a backup unlock method. This allows you to use fingerprint or the secondary method at any time.

Using the fingerprint when dry hands on mi5s

Hello everyone I have a question on your device Xiaomi 5s. When wet hands fingerprint function very well. But when your hands are dry, fingerprint function very slowly. Everyone has encountered a similar case?
Yes, most people has this issue. It's the scanners issue I believe

these solutions do not fix this problem?
I have very dry skin and when having failed reads I just lick my finger and it unlocks immediately.

Issue with fingerprint scanner

Hi,
I am using fingerprint to lock my device. The device was on the desk when my palm accidentally brushed the sensor and the device unlocked. I thought this was a one time issue but I am able to recreate the scenario with any finger or palm. I even asked my friend to test it out and it unlocked. All it required was just tapping the sensor and lifting immediately.
This is really concerning. Is anyone else having the same issue?
I am on stock ROM and unlocked bootloader.

i just tested mine .. its working good.. ! maybe try registering Fingerprints again !!
Registering the fingerprints again did not work. But a factory reset sure did. Hoping to not face this again.

How much pressure is required to trigger the fingerprint reader?

I purchased a Pixel 2 XL from my carrier a few weeks ago. I'm finding that the fingerprint reader needs pressure in order to read my fingerprint. And that the notification swipe using my fingerprint requires a little more pressure than required to unlock my phone. From what I've seen, the mere act of putting my finger on the reader should unlock my phone.
I plan on RMA'ing the phone to Google this week, but I'm worried they won't replace it.
Is this normal?

Definitely not normal. I don't put any pressure on my finger print scanner and it reads it fine. I would do a factory reset and see if that helps. If not I think it's RMA time.

It takes just enough pressure to read the majority of my finger it is really hardly any pressure and swipe works super light so either I'm use to putting good amount of pressure on it or your sensor is bad. But would still try a factory reset first.

No pressure needed here. I can barely touch it and it unlocks. Same for swiping down and up the notification menu. How about redoing your fingerprint with a softer touch before doing a factory reset?

Yep, I just 'touch' it...

Finger Print Sensor Problems Anyone?

Hello, fellow Nokia fans,
I have been using the Nokia 6.1 as my daily phone for the past 2 months, and it has all been a great phone except for the fact that the fingerprint sensor on this phone sucks a lot. Every time I try to unlock my phone using my index fingers it says something like partial fingerprint detected, try again.
It gets really frustrating at this point, the phone that I used prior to this was a Galaxy S6 which had a front facing fingerprint sensor, that made things much easier. Am I doing something wrong? Is the same issue bothering anyone else? Kindly help me in mitigating this problem.
TIA, Peace.
You can calibrate the same finger twice for more information for the sensor so it registers it more accurately.
I registered my fingerprint like I would register my fingerprint by habit. Now it works perfectly, and I have no complaints whatsoever.
Those in the US using fingerprints to unlock your phone (any device) be aware federal courts have ruled you CAN be compelled to unlock your phone with your fingerprint. You CANNOT be compelled to give up a password. The difference is something you are vs. something you know. Sure it is a pain to use a password/PIN, but think of all the personal information you carry with you in your phone.

you also have problem with fingerprint before you do register again? mine is only working when putting fingertip at center, unlike other phones like xiaomi that unlock fast and easy with any part of finger touching the sensor, I don't know if its the sensor smaller or it require more accurate scanning than other phones, it works but sometime hard to unlock when in rush or when finger is sweaty
In fact, this is the worst fingerprint sensor i have tried.
I have Nexus 6P, Huawei Mate 10 Pro and P10 with me
Nokia 6.1 fingerprint sensor keep showing partial detected when hand sweat, dirty or even normal case

Yeah, buddy even I fell the same thing, but someone suggested, registering the same fingerprint sensor slightly helps with the issue.

Yup, this does help out slightly
I did register 3 type of single finger, but still unrecognized in some case
Even the slightest amout of sweat and the fingerprint sensor fails. Thus I had to set up trusted face to make the unlocking process less painful. Unlocking this phone using the fingerprint is pain in the ass. I think the sensor area is too small that it fails to detect the parts of our fingerprints or it's not calibrated well.
I don' t mean to sound overly negative but the fingerprint sensor is next to useless unless you hands are completely dry and not sweaty whatsoever. The success rate is so low for me that I don't use fingerprint sensor on the 6.1 and went back to using a password - which is at least works consistently
i am using nokia 6.1 plus from past 1 year. the fingerprint sensor also works properly but the option of adding fingerprint suddenly gone right after updating the security update.. how to get it back? please help...

Unpredictable Fingerprint Sensor

Hi, I'm owner of Redmi Note 8 Pro from almost 2 years now. Its a very elegant device. But I'm annoyed of its fingerprint sensor specially in summer. With mildest of sweat on my fingers, it's fingerprint sensor doesn't recognise the finger to unlock phone. Multiple attempts I have to make. How many of you are suffering from this annoyance?
Of course a sweaty sensor and a sweaty hands won't team up together. It's not just your device.
I have been using fingerprint phones from last 5 years. Huawei phones didn't cause this much annoyance with sweaty finger as this phone is causing. Finger is slightest sweaty and it won't work, I'll have to wipe the sensor with cloth and then it unlocks.

I know that Tecno phones can unlock with a very small part of the fingerprint. My friend had one. Doesn't that feel a bit not totally secure?
I'm using a phone with an in-display fingerprint, it won't unlock unless the sensor is completely covered.
I remember Galaxy S Duos used to unlock using a picture for face unlock. It wasn't perfect.
Phones enhance security every year. Apologies, I don't see your post a reason to reduce security level of FP scanners.
I wasn't talking about any other person's finger for unlocking the phone. That would be totally unsecured. I'm talking about my own finger not being recognised by the fingerprint sensor even being slightest sweaty.
