I bought a really nice set of in-ear headphones to work with my N5.
However they don't appear to work with the N5x.
Have they decided to change the spec to an "Apple" standard rather than the normal "Android" standard?
If so, this may well be the most annoying/expensive decision ever!

What brand and model of in-ears are you trying to use?
Sent from my Sprint Galaxy S5.
can't remember the model, but degauss labs android ones.
Unfortunately this might be the case! I just received my 5X. It works great with standard headphones (HiFiMan RE-0, no mic), but I get no sound when plugging in the headset that I had used with my Nexus 5 (Xiaomi Piston). Neither the mic nor the headphones work. Instead, audio is diverted to the phone's speakers.
I'll run some more tests when I have time.
Looks like these people are reporting the same issue that I'm experiencing

This is the response I got from Project Fi Customer Service on this issue:
Thank you for contacting Project Fi Support. I am so sorry this process is taking longer than expected, but you are in the right place to get your answers. Unfortunately, because the Nexus 5X is such a new device there have not been many choices when it comes to accessories including headsets. There has been no update either on where and when you can go to find compatible accessories. What I can do is suggest that you try Bluetooth. Bluetooth is compatible with all Nexus devices that are running on Android 5.0 and higher. Below you will see a link that will walk you through the steps to connect to Bluetooth.
Not looking good! I tried the workaround posted in the androidcentral thread. If you hold down the play/pause button on the inline controls while you plugin the headset, then at least you'll get sound. Mic and controls still won't work, but you have at least some functionality. Annoying, but it worked for my Xiaomi Pistons.
Anyone tried pushing it in very hard? Sounds dumb, but I've read about other people needing to push in hard to get it working right - This was to do with complaints about poor volume/quality, though.
Found this on reddit, too: https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus/comments/3qf2kw/nexus_5x_headphone_jack_not_working/
Can anyone confirm?

I just tested my Xiaomi Piston v3s and they work as intended. Volume buttons work, play/pause works, and audio via the earbuds. I did a cursory search and it seems the v3s have CTIA wiring. Most previous Android devices were OMTP (except the Nexus4/5, and my previous G2; maybe it's an LG thing?), which the Piston v2s are.

Thanks! Mine are Piston V2s (supposedly also CTIA?) and they worked for my Nexus 5, so I'm still a little unclear on why the V2 doesn't work for them, but I'll order the V3 and give it a try.

You're right. I did a bit more searching and it seems the v2s are also CTIA. I have a pair of them as well, so I'll give the a go and see if my results are the same.
EDIT: Same behavior that you're seeing with the v2s. They must be wired OMTP, as iPhone users reported issues using them.

Just to confirm, my headphones are pushed in all the way. It takes a little bit of force, there's a noticeable "click," and there's no gap between the gap and the plug.

Thanks for double-checking your V2s, that makes me feel better.
I tested my wife's iPhone headphones. The headphones and mic work, they don't have controls so there was nothing to test there.
I guess you're right, it's as simple as OMTP/CTIA. Some people in the other thread reported that their buttons weren't working when using iPhone-compatible headsets on the 5X, which made me think this was a more complicated issue.
Piston V3s are back-ordered on Amazon currently, but I'm looking forward to them!
Does anyone get this problem: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/help/how-to-off-listening-plugging-headphones-t3234344
This is just with a normal 2-band headphone jack
Rang google support and they say there arent any other reported cases of this so maybe I/we have defective units?
Thanks for checking, @cthip.
Since I don't have the phone yet, could someone help me figure out compatibility here, please? I hope I'm reading this right, but I'm not sure.
If a headset with inline controls works with the N4, it should work with the N5X. Yay or nay?
Cheers!

In theory, it should work just fine, as the Nexus 4 and 5 also used CTIA. I found an old post stating the different wiring schemes could be denoted by the color of the rings; gray for CTIA, and black for OMTP.

I have to ask... why wouldn't they? It's a standard, after all.
Or do you have some other definition of "work"?
there's a ton of stuff out there that's better and cheaper than the iPhone buds. But I guess if you have nothing else to use...
i dont like htc issued headsets. theyre too long and too big for my ears. i never liked em.
I'm pretty sure they would, maybe not the volume buttons but the single press for pause double for skip and triple for previous has worked on a few blackberries I've had. So I don't see why not

If the OP was asking about the ones with the integrated volume controls... those are proprietary to Apple. There's no reason they would work on an Android phone.
I dont see why they wouldnt work, They do in my other android device. I personally like mine because I sleep streaming music and they are comfortable in my ear when I roll my head. (the mic works too)

I doubt the volume control on any of the headphones meant for an iPhone is gonna work on an Android device... But if you just want a good quality pair of headphones with great SQ and a mic, there's plenty of choices out there. I just bought the MEElectronics M9P straight from their site for $23 w/S&H (coupon code "SHIPPING_COUPON" knocked a few bucks off shipping). They should be a nice upgrade from my Sennheiser CX300 which are 4 years old and still kicking, but I wanted something w/a mic.
I've got a pair of JVC HA-FX34 which I use to exercise (less cord noise than the CX300) and by most accounts the MEElec's should be an upgrade over that as well... Just throwing it out there since I know they're fairly common headphones at retail, might be a point of reference. Head-Fi.org is a great resource for this kinda stuff. Other popular choices are the NuForce NE-7M, Maximo iP-HS5, Apple's own dual driver IEMs, etc. Most of those are $40-50 tho and the M9P seemed like a great value judging by the many comparisons between them and some of the pricier competition.
Newegg's selling the M9P as well btw, FWIW (as is Amazon).
Meelectronics makes some great stuff. I have their M6's, which are straight earbuds, fantastic SQ for the money spent. The M9s are supposed to be an amazing bang for the buck if you need a mic.
i saw these bad boys on sale earlier:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B001DERZK0/
i think it's what i'm going to go with
I'm really hoping the mic works with the iPhone earbuds cause I know that they didnt work on the HTC Hero which was disappointing... it recognized it as a headset but no audio in worked.

I have a pair of V-Moda (Faze) earphones / mic and use them on my Hero (and Pre) all the time... I'd say u should be good to go with those. SN: They sound great, BTW (but one of my earphones stopped working :-( .. but I'm sending them in for a warranty replacement )
http://www.v-moda.com/headphones/faze.aspx
**The Play/Stop button works too BTW
From what I've experienced (on the Hero at least), is that the iPhone headphones work for your music and its recognized as a headset but the microphone is not functional. I guess the jack isnt touching the right connectors or something. From the display model of the EVO, it looks a little more promising... I hope they work. I have Shure headphones meant for the iPhone but I wanna use them on my EVO!
The apple earphones don't work on Nokias too. The mic ring is positioned differently compared to standrad earphones with mic.
Has anyone tried using the mic?
I was looking at this today, and even though it didn't specifically say the captivate is supported, I went ahead and bought it. It looked like it used the same basic plug most microphone equipped headphones use, but I can't get the button or microphone to work. It does work with an iphone, so I know (the button at least) does work. Does anyone have any ideas on this, or experience with this product?
Thanks

This is the actual products website:
griffintechnology.com/products/hands-free-microphone
These websites list it and list many more supported device, including the captivate (I know this doesn't change the manufacturer's supported devices):

The compatibility page lists only a few android phones and leaves many older and newer ones that you expect to work - it lists the Cliq, but not the Droid or any other Moto phone - nothing recent either.
So I would say it just won't work - I can't tell you why - the factory headphones that come with the captivate have a similar design - 4 conductors, mic and button, but maybe the headset jacks are looking for a different impedance.
whatever the reason, I don't think you will find an easy solution.
Thanks for the response, I had pretty much decided to return it already. I did actually pull out a multimeter to check the rings, and found out something I hadn't realized before. That the button isn't a direct on/off switch, which goes along with what your thoughts were about the impedance.
I've had an idea for this exact product (more or less) for a little while now, and thought it was great to see it in store. Maybe I can cannibalize a pair of earbuds and attach a male end to the other side.
A couple of days ago I didn't know what Apt-X was, but now I know, and... finally understand why bluetooth streaming was so horrible with my HTC Desire!
So since the S3 has this codec, and since I am going to get the S3, I would like to know which is the best bluetooth stereo headset out there that supports this?
HS3000 looks good, and might be the thing for me but it's more than a year old AFAIK. Any other suggestions? Can be any brand.
EDIT: Sound quality is priority.

What's the issue with the HS3000 being a year old? I have one and use it with my One X (also Apt-X capable), great piece of kit and cheap too. Besides that Apt-X headsets are fairly scarce at present, I know Sennheiser have several, but the prices are rather prohibitive...
If you want a real capable headphone, Sennheiser MM-550x/450x seems like a true winner in that regard
I'm looking for a new Bluetooth headset for music too... i'm currently using a Sony Ericsson MW600 which is pretty good but I'm keen to get something with apt-x support.
The HS3000 looks ok but ideally i'd like a display so i can see the number of people who call and also track information... does anyone know of a bluetooth headset with apt-x support which also has a display?
Well i'm gonna throw my MW-600 on it. It has superb sound and served me well in both my HTC Wildfire and Huawei U8800... Although if the in-ear buds that samsung provides, sound good i wont bother replacing them

Don't really think they're worth it. For that price you could have the HS3000 and buy a set of $200 IEMs and a set of $200 cans which you can use with anything with a 3.5mm output, or even use the HS3000 as an input for anything with a 3.5mm input. For most people that'll be a much higher value proposition.

Another vote for HS3000, it supports Apt-X. Using it with my HOX with some £170 iems and sounds fine for wireless playback. Small and compact.

Sony is supposed to be releasing the Smart Wireless Headset Pro which appears to have all features of the MW600 with the addition of a micro-SD card slot (2GB card included) and Bluetooth 3.0. It looks like a nice upgrade from the MW600, but it appears that it does not support apt-X as this feature is not listed under the specs tab. It's also a bit expensive, but the street price might be somewhere south of the MSRP of $149.
EDIT: Some features are shown in this video

Anyone know a cable converter that will work for the Galaxy S3 (like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/3-5mm-iPhon...e-Samsung-HTC-LG-/140574981373#ht_3686wt_1163)
I have Klipsch S4i headphones that have volume control for the iPhone only. I want to use these headphones with FUNCTIONAL volume control with the Galaxy S3.
If you find one, let me know. This is one of my major gripes with Samsung. I managed to get headphones working with my Samsung Galaxy S using a Nokia headphone remote control, but this doesn't work on the SIII.
Why can't they just use the same standard as everyone else.
Or possibly sell an adaptor, and educate their store staff - went to the popup Samsung store in Spitalfields Market (London) today and they had no idea what I was talking about. The sales assistant finally admitted that his headphones don't work with his S2 either. But was clueless as to how to help.

Yeah the S4i also has a working center button but no functioning volume control (which is what I mostly use...don't really care about a mic)

Yeah, I wont mind paying $30 to get my Pro's working properly with my sweet phone..
Hmm...the ones that come with the S3 have volume control. I hope some headphone manufacturers can reverse-engineer it. I think it has to do with how the parts of the jack are arranged. Because I know on the iPhone the ground part is switched.
Klipsch S4i Reference w/ Mic
I just tried using my Klipsch S4i Reference w/ Mic headphones and the center button + ear buds work but the volume and microphone do not work. I'd appreciate it if anyone discovers an adapter that converts iPhone headphones to work with the Samsung Galaxy S III. Anybody know why it is this way? I've compared the Samsung headphone jack to the Kilpsch ones and I don't see much of a difference...

well, I can change tracks in power amp with that button click option, not in the normal player. In that, the centre button plays/pauses the track.
How did you manage to change the volume on the s3?
10.00 adapter
For 10.00 you can buy the Meelec ADPTR-TRRS-35. I would post the link, but I cant because I'm a new user. If you just type it in to Google, it'll show up. Also, if you're good with soldering, you can buy the tips and solder them yourself. I bought gold plated and its lasted me years with my original galaxy.

Why does it say on the site ``This adapter will not enable the mic/volume buttons of a 3-button Apple compatible headset to work with non-Apple devices``?
I am toying with taking the buds off my iphone headphones ( i like the buds not the in ear stuff) and soldering them to the samsung cable... i know it might be sacrlidge to do so with more expensive headphones but... dangerous times... drastic measures and such.....
I have a rogers s3 rooted running CM 10 and the headphones NOW work. Function keys all working correctly So this was clearly a software limitation.

While I was in Samsung country last month (Seoul), I went to a few headphone/audio retail shops which let you test out almost ANY brand of headphones you'd like--and apparent this has been a big issue for Samsung users (since most volume control + mic headphones out there are built to work for and certified for use with Apple). One method they taught me (aside from rooting and hacking ROMs), was to download this app called "JAYS". This app will somehow allow the microphones to work on many brands (I use Sennheisers personally) whereas it would not work before due to the different in impedance. The app also creates shortcuts using the working center button, allowing short/long keypresses to do quite a lot (i.e. short press + long press will lower volume, double short press will skip tracks, etc) by turning the center button (which works on MOST headphoens) into a morse code-like button.
I have yet to find a ROM out there that allows my Sennheisers (MM80i, MM70i) to work with the volume buttons, but I've been happy with the JAYS app.
Can you suggest a wired headphone (NO bluetooth) with mic & volume buttons that works with OnePlus One? I am in US.
A little background
I am coming from Galaxy S4. I used Bose wired headphone with three buttons & mic. On Galaxy S4 the mic, pause/play buttons worked. The volume up and down buttons did not work.
On OnePlus One, the pause/play button works. However, the mic does not work. I can hear the other party but they cannot hear me. I was not expecting the volume buttons to work and they do not - which is fine.
Thanks in advance.

I don't know if you ever ordered something from dealextreme? I have these BIDENUO G800. http://www.dx.com/p/bidenuo-g800-universal-3-5mm-jack-wired-in-ear-headset-w-microphone-for-cellphone-black-red-259235#.U-zkH3F_vIk.
Mic and volume buttons work just fine on my oneplus.
Great earphones and very cheap!
Only downside is you have to wait like around 3 weeks for your order to arrive.
Thanks. I will take a look at it. I was hoping to find something local or on Amazon
I have the Xiaomi Piston V2 and the buttons work fine (haven't tested the mic yet, but it worked on my Nexus 5).

Thanks. However, the mic that worked on my S4 is not working on OnePlus. Hence the question. Can you check if the mic works on your OnePlus and let me know please?

This is true, just tested it this morning. The volume (according to the other end) is a little low though.

Theres been a lot of audio patches being made lately, could possibly fix your problem but then you get the annoying headset detection bug.
