Mine does this about 10 times a day. I pull it from my pocket after not using it for a while and find that it is powered down. I then have to power it on by holding the power button. I have no idea what could be causing this. I know two other people that have the nexus and haven't had a single random power down or reboot. I have factory reset it three times in hopes of fixing the issue. Do I maybe have a defective device?
I had a few of these when on the stock Rom. After rooting and switching to rootzboat Rom I've had no more random reboots.
No issues at all and im happy about that. When got my droid incredible at launch it would reboot ask the time due to having issues connecting to cell towers.

I'm using the stock rom and I would be thrilled if that was the reason because it would mean my device isn't defective.

I'd say your device is fine. If you're gonna stay stock just wait for a fix maybe with an upcoming update, or just root now and take care of the issue. Once I rooted my phone performs 100 times better in every way, plus no more reboots. Look around they have some great Roms out already. I'm running a 4.0.3 and its fantastic!

Cool, I'll hold off til the next update from Google and if it hasn't resolved the issue I'll flash a custom rom.
Or is it possible to have a bad flash of the stock rom? I wonder if it would help to reflash it.
I definately think this is a problem. My nexus has been completely fine for a week and just starting yesterday it freezes and restarts constantly. It seems like it does it everytime there is more than one thing happening at the same time.
Like a text message rolling in at the same time Im trying to play a youtube video. Or hitting the volume rocker when I get a text...
It is absolutely crazy tbh - like I said phone has been completely fine.. and now its getting worse by the hour.
I am completely stock - no way im waiting for an update because there is no way my unit is not defective.

Yeah, so I think my issue is different than OP's.
I have no idea what could have happened to make it this bad.
I decided to try a factory reset and now I cant even get through the activation without it freezing and rebooting... lol - so the phone at this point is completely useless - cant use it at all.
i have a gsm galaxy nexus which has been playing up since the last 2 days . random reboots and now its gone into a bootloop . the phone wont go beyond the google splash screen.
I think it randomly shut off when you're multitasking? I had it happen twice but can't quite figure out the cause.
I think I may have figured out whats going on with mine. It looks like the battery is a little loose inside the cover and if it moves too much it loses contact and the phone powers off. I tested this by dropping the phone from one hand into the other. I kind of threw it down at my other hand and when it hit it powered off. It doesn't power off every time but it powered down maybe 3 out of 20 tries. That makes me think that may be the issue.
Anyone that wants to try it out let me know your results. I may just have a defective device.
Ok here is my question - Two times i have installed CM11 roms, the newest nightlies, after wiping data / cache, using CWM for recovery, and rumrunner to achieve s-off / unlock. The first time my phone functioned fine for a few days, then began over heating and the top speaker quit working, started issuing static after certain apps turned on, or when the phone booted up. Also - battery was draining faster than i could charge it. Would jump multiple % points at a time.
I "BELIEVE" that my charger has gone bad, and that is the culprit for destroying the phone. Even after flashing back to stock, removing s-off and relocking the bootloader, it drained the battery(even when powered off battery continued to drain and phone was hot to touch).
After this happened to my first htc one, i returned it to stock, and got a replacement under warranty. Then i proceeded to root / s-off / unlock my new htc one, and drop CM11 m7vzw onto it. It functioned fine.......until i plugged it into the charger that i think is the culprit. After hitting 100% power, the phone started to heat up and the top speaker quit functioning. I instantly upon noticing this, used CWM to restore a backup of the stock software. Which did nothing to fix the problem, phone continued to over heat and drain the battery, only one speaker worked. I managed to flash it back to the stock oem RUU software and relock the bootloader, attain s-on before it died completely(so i could turn it in for warranty with no issues AGAIN).
My question - is this a bad charger you think, that is killing my phones? Or could it possibly be something inside of CM11 and PA gapps(4.4) killing my phones? I do not have a meter on hand to test my charger, so i am going on logic that it must be the charger. Since i can't imagine that cm11 is killing every m7vzw it is installed one, and it seemed to function fine until i plugged into that charger.
I love custom roms, and seriously hate all the bloatware that comes attached to verizon phones, so looking for some advice from people mor familiar with this subject then i am. I have only recently started customizing my phone. My back ground is in computers not phones, but seeing as how i am not tweaking the cpu or gpu at all, i am thinking it MUST be this charger. Please let me know what you think, if you have experience with this on a m7vzw. I get another phone tomorrow, and do not plan on using the same charger again, but i am somewhat wary as to upgrading the rom after all this crap ive been through. ANY advice is appreciated. Much thanks!

Are you using the stock charger?
Try a different charger on the next phone. Many people have flashed CM11 and don't have those issues so it appears to be your charger that's killing the phones.
Don't think it's the charger. I am seeing more and more threads of people running cm11 a d getting this overheat issues then phone dying. I think it's best that people leaves cm11 alone until it can be fixed. As I have never seen any other Rom act like this.

The only thing i can think of, after resting on it, is that i turned on the DSP manager EQ shortly before it happened each time. Not going to customize the one I am getting today. Just thankful I know enough that I managed to get them both back to s-on / locked / stock RUU before sending them back.....so my warranty will cover them.
And yes, i was using the stock HTC charger that came with the device. Wish i had a meter.
This is odd. I have been using CM 11 for close to a week now, and haven't experienced any issues like this yet, and hopefully won't. The battery life isn't great (and I will probably return to using BoneStock from @andybones ), but no overheating or speaker issues. I don't normally listen to a lot of music, and I have not messed with DSP manager much, but I have used it, and music/videos seem to work fine. I would recommend trying a different charger to rule that out. Also, if you are getting a warranty replacement, try leaving the phone s-on and stock for a few days and see how it acts with your charger - that will help narrow down the real cause.

Both phones are dead. Will not charge, will not turn on. They only worked for a few hours after the over heating issue started. Battery continued to drain even after being turned off, and after it was drained it would not charge at all. It was lucky i could even get them back to s-on / locked / stock. And the issue continued after going back to stock. Hardware damaged for sure. So no more testing on those. lol
On the next one, wait a week before installing a ROM, and see if the phone functions fine. If not, then its the charger or something else you've been doing with it. If it is fine, try installing cm11 again and see if it returns. If it returns at THAT point, then it might be the ROM, though I doubt that's the issue. You'll never know if its cm11 or something else causing the issue if you immediately flash it after getting it.

That is my plan, and i have other chargers. I don't plan on using the HTC one. Going to use a stock samsung charger until i get my replacement charger in the mail. I am hoping it was the charger. It just seemed odd that the issue happened both times after turning on DSP, then using the phone to either watch netflix, or listen to music on the speakers. Also, I figure if no one on these forums has the same issue.....then it must be the charger. In the meantime - I am just going to root / s-off and use stock software till next week or so.
I'm just getting paranoid as to how many times verizon will let me get a warranty replacement, even though i am sending them back in full stock format. lmao

They'll let you send as many as you want as long as its under warranty haha. I remember I had to send in the droid bionic 4 times and the droid RAZR twice, both times without any hassle from them. I just had awful luck with those phones, mostly screen-lifting.
Haha. Good to hear. Because I have 10 months of warranty left, and I am a computer modder at heart.....and that has turned me into a custom rom loving phone crazy person.
Yeah you've got nothing to worry about there. Just make sure its back to stock. They honestly probably wouldn't say anything if it weren't, but we don't want to give them even more reasons to lock us down more.
I'm having the same issues. I'm on my 4th phone now.
This happened to me on several ROMs. SlimBean 4.3, SlimKat 4.4 now.. and I flashed back to stock while I had a phone that wasn't dead yet.. but it's still happening.
I'm not sure what the deal is. Just happens without rhyme or reason out of the blue one day.
Can anyone recommend flashing anything that might help?
What's responsible for the battery management even if there's no ROM installed? HBoot? Should I re-flash an HBoot to attempt to fix? It's not the ROM, I don't think. If it is, it's something that permanently screws up the phone. I've completely wiped my phone and went to stock. Same issue.
I got my new phone, and s-off'ed / unlocked / flashed cwm recovery, then updated it to 4.3 ota, no issues so far. Scared to put any custom rom after what happened to the last two. But having no issues yet with it, with only a custom recovery and s-off. Have rom manager loaded also, and made a back up since it seems to be running fine now. If anyone isolates this problem and can get a fix going, would make me very happy.
I've noticed that trickster and some of the other CPU performance apps are locking the min CPU speed at the max speed so the phone always stays at top speed. If it stays like that for an extended period of time it will damage the phone. The heat can cause the battery to drain really fast and damage the CPU. If you are on any ROM with a custom kernel I would be on the lookout for this.

I was running CM11 on my nexus Galaxy and I thought my battery was bad. My phone would die after a few hours. I got a new battery and it did the same. I installed slim ROM and now I am getting 10+ hours no problem. Also my phone does not feel like it is going to melt.
I currently have NB4.
What's new in NF4? I know it has the VoLTE but that's not in my area so nothing for me(yet).
Are there any improvements?
I guess what I'm trying to ask is. What are the pros and con's of upgrading from NB4 to NF4?
I also run w03 slimkat. Is it compatible? It shows its compatible with 4.4 BL. Just not sure if that's updated to include NF4 BL.
thanks and sorry for being a noob.

I have no idea as to what exactly is "new" in NF4 but take it from me,
if there wasn't any improvements then why would Samsung waste their
time, money and effort with the NF4 or any other future updates?
There are no "cons" to upgrading NF4 or any future official updates.

Of course there can be cons. Thats a laughable statement. Until it's reported the update is fine, you can have broken root, locked down bootloader (not as likely on T-Mobile) a bad build that causes bad battery drain. You must be new to the phone rooting and roming world to say "There are no "cons" to upgrading NF4 or any future official updates"
I don't want any fights started. Please keep it casual.
With that being said. Yes there can be some pros and con's.
Like I said before I know that it includes VoLTE. That's the main feature. However That is not available in my area.
What I would like to know. Is there better internet connectivity? How's battery life. My biggest problem with T-Mobile in my area is it keeps dropping from H+ to 3G. 3G and below are like being in airplane mode. I end up having to disconnect and reconnect to get H+ back. Does NF4 fix this? If not Is there any tricks/mods to help with this issue. Or is it just ****ty network in my area?
and again I will continue to use W03 SlimKat. currently running V23 waiting on V25.
I'm looking for people who have personally updated there phone to NF4 and can give me details on how well its running.
Thanks

For me, battery performance increased noticeably and it seems like connectivity is better. At my house it used to always switch from 4glte to 4g and since the update it holds the lte connection better. Sunday morning there was a quake in the bay area and since then data has been weird. ..but up to that things where just buzzing along. I came from NB4 and like i said i noticed worthy improvements.
***BTW i did a full wipe in recovery, powered down, pulled battery, booted into download mode and odin'd the full firmware file, everything except External SD.

Thanks, Based on this information I have decided to go ahead and update to NF4. Running W03 SlimKat V24 sofar so good. Once Google gets done restoring my apps I will turn off WiFi and update this thread with my findings.
I know many people claim better battery life after updating to 4.4, but I don't see it. I just updated about a week ago from 4.3 (MI7) to 4.4 (NF4) and battery life is similar at best, but mostly worse. Not only that, but charging also takes much longer. Normally my battery would fully charge in about 2.5 hours, but couple nights ago it took 5 hours to go from 10% to 82%. I went back to sleep and finally was fully charged after additional 3 hours, but then as soon as I turn it on, went down to 97%. I never seen that before. I run 0228 code and discharged to 0 and then back to 100%, so hopefully that will calibrate battery better, but still just last night phone was at 100% before sleep and in the morning down to 80%. Normally on 4.3 I would loose 3% to 4% overnight. I just hope it's temporary and will improve after settling down, otherwise i will need to run some serious diagnostics and fix it. Antutu also seem slower, last time I run it on 4.3 I got 37083, under 4.4 I barely got 35000.

Not my experience at all. Battery drops maybe 2-3% overnight. Stays at 100% longer than it had and charges plenty fast from 1% to 100% way under 5 hrs, but i never really timed it yet i can say it was under 3 hrs and i remember being surprised at how quickly it got to 80' something percent. Every month or so I run my phone down to 1% just to help the battery cause I'm usually on a charger and rarely get below 50%. Maybe a good wiping might tune things up for you.

I believe you, you're not the first person claiming better battery. I don't want to wipe, too much headache to restore and settings and games in progress, also my kids are on my account, so either no automatic reinstall (BTW how do I stop it), or a lot of deleting kiddie games, already went with this process once before, not fun. Probably something simple, since I'm stock rooted and always been on my Note3.

yup, its a coin toss.....once I saw the stability that comes with full wiping I can't not do it, stopped me from being a flashaholic. Titanium Backup can backup/restore your apps but settings/shortcuts/widgets etc have to all be set back up....I take screen shots of all my home screens to aid the process of getting back to normalcy....gotta weigh the pros and cons

it shows battery info, also there is a button on bottom, if pressed it changes battery charge level, so it was speculated it does some quick recalibration, but as with all other codes no one knows for sure. Sure this is in some secret code lists, but i don't think there is a list that have them all, otherwise they wouldn't be secret anymore. LOL
There were few threads about this code in past, but i don't remember where now.
Well sofar everything is great. Network still gets stuck in 3G and I have to airplane mode to get H+ again. However it seems like its not doing this as often.
Better life is the same which is good because battery life was awesome before the update.
I will update if anything changes.

That is exactly why I froze my updater and stayed on jb4.3.
Now that KK has been out for a while and should have bugs fixed, what are the pros for updating from jb to kk?
I didn't update for long time mostly because of SD card issues, which could be fixed, but needed root, but again, root would trip knox. Now that we can root without breaking knox, I finally updated. Personally didn't see much: people claimed better battery, for me is little worse, many claimed faster snappier response, I don't see that either, on the other hand, so far haven't seen any SD card issues neither, so didn't even need the fix yet. One advantage, I already made my first VOLTE, so it works and it's on in my area and you need KitKat for that.
Add to this probably few security fixes and some tweaks under the hood and probably that's it. IMO, the update did not fix any issues for me, except wifi calling that broke recently, but I didn't have any other issues as well, but at the same time the update didn't break anything major either, so it's pretty much wash, unless you need VOLTE.
Note 4 comes out in few weeks, so that was my backup plan in case update was messed up, but as it is Note4 needs to win my heart on it's own merits.
Hi guys
Recently I converted my HTC One M8 to Google Play Edition, after achieving S-Off. I really liked it, but there was one major issue every time my battery would die, after switching the phone back on, some of the apps (mainly stock) and settings would reset to default. Also battery indication became really bad, most of the time it dies indicating 20-25%. So after trying factory resets couple of times without any improvement, I decided to go back to stock Sense. I did it successfully, updated to marshmallow... but the issue with app and settings reset after battery dies still persist, as well as poor battery indication. Just wanted to ask if any of you had similar issue? is there any way to fix it? would be good to know, cause I really love this phone, especially since they keep updating it, would be a shame to sell it as faulty and get some ****ty mid-ranger as I don't have enough money for a flagship beast atm. Thank you in advance, guys.

Hey there
Have you tried doing a full cache clear / wipe / stock RUU installation? This sounds like the battery is no longer holding charge, and is actually precisely what my old Blackberry did once the battery was in its dying throes. Hopefully this is not the case with yours, and simply some funky issue lurking in the depths of your device

Figured, thought it might be one of those "oh duh" moments
Good luck man, I have no clue what the issue could be if it is software related at this point

Sorry for the double post-- It looks like, on some searching on my own, that the batterystats files can have something to do with your phone displaying the wrong % / being async with actual battery life. There are multiple ways to rebuild / wipe this file, though I cannot walk you through it currently as I haven't had to do it myself yet. Give this a look, maybe it'll help

thanks, man. I tried to re-calibrate my battery by discharging and recharging to 100% without switching it on, repeated couple of times, no help. but i can live with faulty battery indication, the real problem is setting up all those apps and settings that reset every time battery dies... it's very uncomfortable, I even stopped setting stuff up, just keep it on default for now....
Okay, so I have no idea what is wrong with my att note 4.This thing has always been kept in an otterrbox. It has been kept in perfect condition until an ota forced its self upon the phone. After that it started acting weird. Reboots, freezes, black screens, and sometimes something would get corrupted and the phone wouldn't boot at all. Sometimes the phone would make a constant buzzer or it would go straight to recovery but say sbl1 partition doesn't exist. Flashing stock worked for a while, but the problems would come back shortly and have gotten much worse.I just bought a brand new battery fully charged it and flashed stock 5.0, 5.1, 6.0. It doesn't matter i have tried it with the pit, without the pit same things happen. I have tried both batteries, fresh wipes, different firmware's, and now I can't even get it to boot at all no matter what I Try.
What do you guys think my problem could be i have no idea what it could be
I WOULD APPRECIATE ANY HELP
Same Issue
Hello,
After the marshmallow update I am facing the same. but i kept it running by downloading wakelock app from playstore . It somehow helps I am not sure the reason. Please select PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK option once you download.
Try to not to shut down the phone because of any reason.
I hope this helps! and do let me know if it does.
my phone has been doing this for the past year after the update to 5, I purchased it on ATT Next in december 2014 so I think i have 1 more next payment. thing is it was the BEST phone prior to the update to 5 then it has been hell. i've purchased 5 batteries which someitmes helped for a short period but currently i can't even use any of my tricks to get it to boot.
I have came so close to crushing the phone so many times. thank goodness ii'm older and wiser or else it would be long gone

I have read many sources available online. These updates sometime is not compatible with our phones. In case of note 4, certain model's CPU faces shutdown trouble due to update the moment we lock the screen or in standby mode. To keep them running there are apps like wakelock. Download that and select option Partial_wake_lock. This will help a bit hopefully. Worked for me. But this isn't a permanent solution.
Apologies in advance if my terminologies aren't correct or the solution doesn't work.
