NFC Does Not Work with case on - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got a Spigen Slim case for my plastic back LG G4 right when they began shipping here in the States. Its more like a half case since it only attaches to two sides of the phones body. It's also very thin.
I also attached a car mount to the back of the case, which is magnetic. At the time, no stores in my area were accepting Android Pay (Apple had not yet invented it).
A couple of months ago, at least one store began accepting it. It works fine, except I noticed I have to remove my case in order for the store reader to pick up the signal. Now, the case has an area on the inside that appears to me to be where one might attach one of those wireless charging stickers.
So my question: is it likely the case that's preventing the NFC signal from reaching the reader, or the magnet?
If it's the case, is there something I can get to make this work through the case like one of those charging stickers?

No responses means either this has been asked dozens of times or nobody knows. I'm guessing it's the magnetic car holder. Guess I'll have to pry it off and test my theory.

I have the Spiegen Slim Case on my Verizon G4 and NFC and Wireless Charging both work fine with the case on.

My bet would be the magnetic car holder as well.
NFC works for me with both my Diztronic TPU case and my Seidio Dilex Pro case.

Thanks. I'll remove it and follow up next week. Hate to lose the holder though. Probably the easiest and best one I've ever used.

Xoom case manufacturing error?

I'm beginning to believe that Verizon's case manufacturer made a pretty big screw-up...
Has anyone purchased the dock and the case? Due to the cost of these accessories, it's unlikely that many people buy the dock AND the case that sits it upright... For those that did: If you notice, the dock has a second insert for use if you also bought the case. Now, if you actually do swap out the dock inserts, in order to dock the device with the case; you have to unfold the flap as if you were standing it up anyways...
If you do this, and use the insert for the case--- there is lots of room if you dock it in this fashion. There's virtually no way to bend the case 'enough' to make it fit with the case on, so why send the secondary insert?
Now, if you do this... (silly I know) install the case on your Xoom upside down!
Wait for it...
That's right... it fits PERFECTLY on the dock with the additional insert when loaded in this fashion.
Now... we've read so many complaints about not being able to charge the device while in the case and having the device closed... If you install it "upside down" you'll notice both the usb connector, the 2x media contacts, and the power port is exposed and usable while closed.
OK, so what's the catch? The volume buttons are covered up. (/facepalm)
Quite clearly there was at least one manufacturing 'oops' here... Clearly the design of the case that went into production was somehow mirrored the 'opening' to the wrong side...
So... My point...
The dock insert is useless...???
I believe the insert is for use when you have the silicone case on the xoom and maybe some future cases. I just take my xoom out of the case when I use the dock at night. Will be looking at the silicone cases this week to see how it looks and feels on the xoom.
Dock insert is for gel case. Works perfect with the gel case and insert.

Wow--- I completely forgot those existed. Makes sense now, although you have to admit it is as if the cad design on the folder case must have gotten flipped or something, lol. Poor design all around.
Looks like I'm returning the Xoom anyways, with Sprint announcing their release of a 4G ready Xoom next month, and what seems to be Verizon is blocking PPTP traffic... I'm wavering...
For those of you removing the Xoom from the folio case, does it seem to cause any undue wear and tare on the tabs that lock the Xoom in? I have the dock and case but am still waiting on delivery of the Xoom.

I have no wear at all. The case is flexable enough to loosen one side out at a time, do not snap or pop the Xoom in and out and you have nothing to worry about. I was worried about this as well after reading the post, which I now see were exagerated, and legit damage was likely operator error.

I agree, I haven't noticed any wear and I take the case off every night to put the xoom on the dock.

Some people were complaining about lags and loss of performance when the Xoom is operated in upside-down orientation... I charged upside-down (no dock though) and of course it works

Cases that allow use of the three prongs?

Do they exist? I have the incipio case Verizon sells and I loved it until I found out about the prongs. Now it seems like a pain.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
TPU case has hole for prongs.
I'm not too sure if it's a good idea, even if these case have cut outs for the pogo pin, will these stands or connectors allow you to have the case on whiles connected up, cases are available in all sizes, to have a stand to accept the case, thats going to be a problem, and if someone decides to use the stand without a case, it will be loose.

Any way to make Google Case autowake?

So I bought the expensive official Google folio case without doing my research. It doesn't auto wake/sleep which is pretty annoying, I take it there is just a magnet somewhere that does this. Anyone heard of anyone modifying it or putting a magnet in? Anyone know where the magnet is located so I can experiment?
are you sure you have the Folio case? because the Folio case is the 1 that has the wake/sleep function, which on mine works fine...

I'm sorry, I don't have the folio case. I have the regular case that looks like a book. Its really not worth the hefty price tag.
Fixed the title.
Just get some magnets and experiment, the sensor is on the bottom near the usb port. You could glue a few magnets on the outside of the case. Most folio's have 3 to 4 magnets...Get some nice chrome magnets at harbor freight tools or micheals or joann etc. Just avoid the neodymium, I hear those are too strong. theres also the plastic strip type magnets, but I haven't tested those. But it should be as easy as walking over to your frig and trying it out...

When held in portrait orientation, the sensor is on the left bezel near the bottom. I added a magnet to one of my Verso cases and it works perfectly.
what brand case? or is this official nexus 7 case?
Agreed - not worth $49.99
I bought one at Best Buy. It is Google Branded and stamped and says Nexus 7 2013 on the box.
I'm returning mine because once you fold it to watch the screen, it no longer lays flat and there is no way to close it. Plus, you can get what appear to be much better ones on Amazon for under $20. :fingers-crossed:

Magnetic Car Mount

I was wondering if anyone had thoughts or has even tried these types of car mounts.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nexcon-Magn...lde-/221655676812?hash=item339bb5378c&vxp=mtr
Its magnetic so I was wondering if people thought our Nexus 5 would work with it without the metal plate they supply. Seeing as the Nexus 5 has magnets in it's back I would think the only question is if the magnets used are attracted to the ones in the Nexus 5 and the placement of the magnets. I may get one to try out but I wanted to see people's thoughts anyway.
Well as far as I am informed and seen, inside your nexus 5 are metal discs not magnets, the magnets comes in the original nexus 5 wireless charger. Hope this make it more clear, and I think they made it a bit vague so you would get it then they would simply tells you to get their magmatic cover !!!

I wasn't sure if inside the Nexus 5 are magnets or, as you say, metal disks. I know my old Palm Pre had magnets in the back of the phone for it's TouchStone charger. I actually have two of those. And the Nexus 5 actually connects with that really well. Almost like it was made for it. If these docks are similar to what the TouchStone charger is as far as magnet placement, it should work really well without that metal plate they give you. But the plate does come with it to use with a phone case just in case. So I may just put down the 10 bucks or so and see how it goes.
Cool let me know what turns out, I may kick one too off ebay
I have this one in my car http://www.amazon.com/InfiniApps-Smartphones-Cradle-less-Quick-snap-technology/dp/B00DPMNNUO/ref=sr_1_38?ie=UTF8&qid=1427845784&sr=8-38&keywords=magnetic+car+mount
It works very well, and the phone stays locked in place. It attaches to the 4 metal plates in the back cover of the Nexus 5 meant for the official Qi charger. You can't use a case though, or the magnets won't be strong enough to hold. If you do use a case (thin TPU or thin hard case only) then you will need the metal plate insert for it to work. But even still, the phone sticks way better without a case. It sticks best in vertical position, if you do landscape it needs to be centered perfectly or it will start to twist back to vertical over big bumps, it won't come off, but it will turn.
I use an nGroove Snap (http://www.amazon.com/Mountek-nGroove-Magnetic-Smartphones-Tablets/dp/B00HMDYH2U) and it works just fine even without the metal plate.

Good to know that these do in fact work without those metal plates. I thought they'd might but thanks for confirming it. I don't use a case so it should be perfect for me. I'll definitely be getting one now.
Made my own car charger. Too bad my Spigen case is too thick, so can't use it. Or I just have to risk breaking my phone by not using the case..... Dilemma...
I use kenu airframe + google Nexus qi charger = perfect solution.
I ended up buying this one and it works perfectly.

Do you need to use the included magnetic stickers? Or will it lock to the magnets inside the phone?

Nope. It works as is. And it works nicely too. If the next Nexus doesn't have magnets, I'm going to be sad.
I have another mount, I believe it's called "iMagnet" which is almost identical. After using it for the past year with my nexus 5, I have some gripes about it. It's not an incredibly solid grip, which means every bump is going to make your phone start rotating one way or the other. I like to place my phone in landscape mode but since it's in landscape mode, the phone will twist on the mount until it's touching the dash. I'll periodically move the phone back to the center of the mount while I'm driving which probably isn't safe. Ive used my phone with cases, without cases, with dbrand skins, without. The official Google "bumper" and my spigen neo hybrid are both too thick for the mount to have a good hold, so it really slides all over the place. Using a skin, doesn't affect it too much though. If I were to get another car mount I wouldn't get one of these. It's not horrible, but it just gets annoying.

I think you'll be happy with it
I have one, and I love it. I've got one of the slim Spigen cases and I put one of the metal plates between the phone and the case. I had to play with the position to make sure I could still use NFC, Qi charging, and GPS worked fine.
Now I feel super confident in my purchase. Thanks guys!
I've been happy with this one from amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V54LQO4?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00 only $10.99.

$120 !!! https://www.mous.co/products/wireless-charger-for-car?variant=31852886687802
Sticker shock has me running for the hills but I can't find any other reputable options for magnetic mounting/charging.
Anyone other magnetic mount Qi chargers out there? Cheers.
This one works wonders for me. It's not magnetic but the self actuating arms are smooth and silent.

I have the limitless case for my Pixel 5. It's okay. I paid $34 for it on sale and even that feels overpriced. It's fairly large and bulky but protects the phone well. The buttons are sub-par and the fingerprint sensor is very recessed. I haven't tried any of their magnetic accessories so can't comment on that. If you do decide to pick one up, definitely wait for a sale.

Amazon would be your best bet. I got a case called the Dbrand Grip. You get to choose a skin to put on the back of the case and it's wireless charging compatible.

It has metal plate built in for magnetic mount.
I can wireless charge it without removing case.

I have both as well as the card holder.
I originally purchased the Aramid Fiber case, but that material proved to be a fingerprint/oil magnet. I then ordered the Speckled Fabric case and am quite pleased with it. It has a soft touch feel, doesn't attract dust or dirt, and cleans up very easily with a damp cloth. The case itself is not the slimmest, but it is also not what I would consider bulky, being just slightly smaller than the Spigen Tough Armor. The top and bottom edges have a slight lip to keep the screen from sitting flush when placed face down, with a screen level dip on the sides to facilitate edge swiping. Though it seems some may disagree, I feel that the edges are perfectly contoured, the buttons feel just right, and it has plenty of grip. Overall, in my opinion, it is a great case assuming you plan to take advantage of the Limitless 3.0 accessories.
The wireless charger mount is nearly perfect with one significant caveat: The vent clip is terrible. However, since the ball joint cup/tightening ring is on the mount and not the clip, if you already have another mount that has a 17mm ball joint, such as an iOttie dashboard or disc drive mount, you can easily swap in the Mous mount and it will fit and tighten easily and securely. As for the magnetic hold, it is very secure and does not have any alignment or slide/drift issues like most of the stick-on metal plate magnetic systems I've tried previously.
As for the card wallet, it too is nearly perfect, assuming you only need to carry a maximum of 3 cards and a couple of double or triple folded bills. It's a little stiff at first, but the leather-like material seems to have a little stretch to it, and will also return to form assuming you don't cram it too full. It also attaches securely and detaches easily.
At this point I've been using them for about a month, and I would say it's probably the closest thing to a MagSafe-like setup you can find for a very select range of Android phones.
All of the pieces also seem to be well constructed and are likely to last quite a while assuming you don't regularly put your phone through a lot of abuse.
My final piece of advice would be this:
Since their products are a bit pricey, buy the case first, try it for a few days to see if you like it. If you do, go back and use the 20% off code they give you with your first purchase to purchase the other accessories you want to add. If you don't, return it and you're only out the cost of return shipping.
bit of a late reply but yeah i have the limitless 3.0 case myself, i saw some people review it and they seemed quite positive about it so i bought it and i am happy with it, it still charges wirelessly just fine and NFC still works as well even tho its quite a chunky case which i rather have then a case which gives like no protection
