Xoom case manufacturing error? - Xoom Accessories

I'm beginning to believe that Verizon's case manufacturer made a pretty big screw-up...
Has anyone purchased the dock and the case? Due to the cost of these accessories, it's unlikely that many people buy the dock AND the case that sits it upright... For those that did: If you notice, the dock has a second insert for use if you also bought the case. Now, if you actually do swap out the dock inserts, in order to dock the device with the case; you have to unfold the flap as if you were standing it up anyways...
If you do this, and use the insert for the case--- there is lots of room if you dock it in this fashion. There's virtually no way to bend the case 'enough' to make it fit with the case on, so why send the secondary insert?
Now, if you do this... (silly I know) install the case on your Xoom upside down!
Wait for it...
That's right... it fits PERFECTLY on the dock with the additional insert when loaded in this fashion.
Now... we've read so many complaints about not being able to charge the device while in the case and having the device closed... If you install it "upside down" you'll notice both the usb connector, the 2x media contacts, and the power port is exposed and usable while closed.
OK, so what's the catch? The volume buttons are covered up. (/facepalm)
Quite clearly there was at least one manufacturing 'oops' here... Clearly the design of the case that went into production was somehow mirrored the 'opening' to the wrong side...
So... My point...
The dock insert is useless...???

I believe the insert is for use when you have the silicone case on the xoom and maybe some future cases. I just take my xoom out of the case when I use the dock at night. Will be looking at the silicone cases this week to see how it looks and feels on the xoom.

Dock insert is for gel case. Works perfect with the gel case and insert.

Wow--- I completely forgot those existed. Makes sense now, although you have to admit it is as if the cad design on the folder case must have gotten flipped or something, lol. Poor design all around.
Looks like I'm returning the Xoom anyways, with Sprint announcing their release of a 4G ready Xoom next month, and what seems to be Verizon is blocking PPTP traffic... I'm wavering...

For those of you removing the Xoom from the folio case, does it seem to cause any undue wear and tare on the tabs that lock the Xoom in? I have the dock and case but am still waiting on delivery of the Xoom.

I have no wear at all. The case is flexable enough to loosen one side out at a time, do not snap or pop the Xoom in and out and you have nothing to worry about. I was worried about this as well after reading the post, which I now see were exagerated, and legit damage was likely operator error.

I agree, I haven't noticed any wear and I take the case off every night to put the xoom on the dock.

Some people were complaining about lags and loss of performance when the Xoom is operated in upside-down orientation... I charged upside-down (no dock though) and of course it works

[Q] Motorola Xoom Portfolio Case

I have seen the new accessories released from Motorola, but I think that the Portfolio Case just looks hideous. Has anyone seen a portfolio case similar to the official Apple iPad case (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Apple®+-+iPad™+Case/1271742.p?id=1218246670763&skuId=1271742)?
Thanks in advance.
EDIT: While doing my research on the portfolio case and reading your comments, I have been thoroughly convinced to wait on the case soon to be released by zoogue in March of 2011. There is a youtube video on it. It looks pretty good. It is made of leather and allows you to view at nearly any angle due to the use of velcro.

The one that my friends have on their ipads don't tilt and have the viewing angles. That feature is a necessity to me
Sent from my Evo using Tapatalk
Ok, just purchased my Xoom and Moto Portfolio case. Have to say I'm disappointed with the case. Seems like Moto didnt fully think this one out. The build quality is very good and does what it says. Issues are:
1. You cannot charge the Xoom and have it in one of the viewing setups like monitor. In other words you cannot charge and work with a BT keyboard.
2. You cannot charge the device while the portfolio is closed. It has to be opened to access any of the ports
3. Folding the case back covers the on/off button.
4. Edges are hard plastic and seem like they'll leave wear marks on your Xoom after a while.
I got it too, and it's pretty lame. As mentioned above, you can't charge the device while it's propped up. That's the biggest WTF.
I see it as a very temporary solution. I want the tablet in some sort of protective gear, but as soon as something better comes along, I'm sending it to ebay.
you guys are being polite, the portfolio case blows.
the bottom corners have these nubs that jut out and are supposed to 'grip' the bottom, but they don't, and it generally just feels like they didn't actually have the full dimensions of the product before this was manufactured.
I even got out a xacto and cut these nubs off, hoping it would fit better, but it still pretty much sucks. Going to take it back, nubs gone or not. It's a shame because I want a fold back cover just in case I drop this, but this is NOT what I had in mind.
its kinda ok for me (for now) till hopefully otterbox comes out with a case for it. as atoy74 said, it sucks coz it has no opening or something for charging and syncing while closed.
The case really is a piece of crap. I'm constantly worried about the little nubs permanently scratching the Xoom's body and it doesn't close comfortably either. Getting the Xoom out of the case is a pain in the ass too because you're again worried about the body being scratched. It's also a lot heavier than I expected and adds a noticeable amount of weight. Also, not being able to charge while tilting is ridiculously stupid. I was looking forward to using this because of the nice tilting options, one of the few things Motorola got right with this case, but using it has me on the lookout for better alternatives.
i wish i read this before buying it. The case sucks squid ballzzzz
I really like the case. The charging issues you guys mentioned exist because this is a tablet, and is meant to be docked.
My issue is that when I close it.. I feel like I'm going to break a nail opening it. It should have a tab to open it up. Though the price is perhaps a little high for what it is.
never mind I love this case its perfect
This cases is indeed bad. They used way to much plastic. I'll be keeping my eye out for a nice third party case.

What the hell are you talking about? I have owned an Ipad, Galaxy Tab and now the Xoom. I've never had this problem before and I've always used portfolio style cases. Access to the unit's ports should always be accessible and I shouldnt have to buy a $50 dock to do that.

Protective Case Terrible design
Hello All , I have to agree on all point the case is not planed out right . What the HELL I can't charge and close the unit . The unit is awesome, but until someone finds a third party case protector what else can we do or does anyone have another idea or approach to protect their investment.
when you lay the xoom in the case flipped it directs the speaker sound towards you. Most flip cases make it hard to use the device with all of its accessories. The case gives excellent protection and makes watching movies awesome.

I'm not saying the case doesn't have its strong points. But, the negatives are huge. This morning I already noticed wear marks on my Xoom where the plastic tabs rub. COME ON, it's only been 24 hours. There's no justification for a $40 device to reduce the value of a $800 one.
I can't wait for third party cases to start arriving. I've had wonderful experiences with Encase, Scosche, Seidio and Macally. Hopefully they'll have something soon-ish.
I think the case the OP was talking about is the OEM ipad case. I do like it and wish there was one like for the xoom.

The Xoom Slides into the top part of the case. I used a file to rub down the plastice that pokes out on the bottom half.

Just decided to hop in as I am working with some third party people to either 'get' or develop some accesories for the Xoom. I've been working with them for several months now on accessories for the gTab and it seems to have truned into a pretty solid relationship.
Im hoping to be able to get a few things for the Xoom owners. As SOON as I have get any word I'll keep you posted as well as list something in the 'marketplace' (have to be potically correct )

Do any cases work with the docks?

I am planning to get a car dock and possibly a standard dock for my phone, but I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any cases that will work with the dock. I don't really want to have to take the case off every time I dock it.
I'm using the incipio feather case with the car dock. It works fine as long as you dont put the insert in the dock itself. You do have to press it down firmly when you put it in the dock to get the car home app to pop up. But it works just fine. I just got the dock yesterday and I LOVE IT. First car dock I've ever owned. Pretty sweet
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
That's good news about the Feather. I didn't order a car dock yet, but I'm considering one. I'm hoping to see more feedback on cases that work with the docks.
I wonder if anyone has tried a dock with the Body Glove Mirage?
I just picked up the Speck case. I may not keep it, depending on if it works with the car and/or the regular charge dock. Doesn't seem to work too well with the MM dock. The opening for the USB/HDMI ports doesn't seem to be quite big enough for them to seat properly. If the tolerances are as close with the other docks, I may shave off about a 1/2 mm so that I can get it to seat. Looks great, tho :/ I think what I'm looking for is something between the feather and the speck.
I picked up both the standard dock, the car dock and the body glove case. I love the case and it works great with the car dock if you take out the removable insert that I think they designed just for this purpose. The problem I'm having is the phone will not dock tightly enough with the standard dock. I may try the suggestion of shaving some of because I think that may fix it.
I'll post back with my shaving results.
Would love to know if someone found an easy to remove case that works with the standard dock
Body glove case works perfectly with the car dock. No issues here. Feels good on the phone and in hand. Highly recommended.

Also using the Bodyglove case. The latch on the car-dock will not completely close. I've put calls into Motorola and ATT. No one seems to be able to point me in the direction of a case that would not interefere with the car-dock's latch.
One concern is that undue stress is put on the micro USB receptacle on the phone because the phone is not completely secured in the dock. Bumps in the road, acceleration / deceleration causes imperceptible back and fourth motion that would ultimately mess something up.
Motorola certainly made the doc for using cases on the phone, else they'd not have included the base "to use if your phone does not have a case".
One workaround, is to glue a horizontal pin (2-3 mm diameter) parallel to where the latch makes contact.
Does the Incipio Feather case work with the Lapdock? Thx.

I have both laptop dock, HD dock. Just purchased the 2 silicone cases from here in Canada from futureshop. its the only cases in stock before the phone was released today. when i got home I was praying that the laptop dock would work with the phone while the silicone case was on (taking it on and off is a pain) cannot post pics SORRY. confirming laptop dock works with silicone case on with a very easy removal of plastic part.
For the HD Dock it was a NO GO had to remove case.
EDIT: hd dock does have removeable clip aswell. Dont know how i didnt see that. Gel silicone case works with hd dock. Confirmed! !
hope this helps you guys that like the silicone cases like I do.
I've debated the LapDock myself. Even the HD Dock just for using my wireless USB Keyboard and Mouse. I have an Otterbox Defender though.
Far as the car dock and standard dock, I don't plan on getting those. I have shortcuts to use those apps without the docks. Have a hands free stand for the car that holds it perfectly with the case and modified my clip case for the Otterbox to use it as a stand as well and be able to plug the charging cable into it while it's in use.
In case anyone wonders what I had to mod the clip case, the Desk Dock clock does not rotate with the screen and to have it correct, the charging port on the phone is on the bottom of the case in the cradle. Otterbox does however include markings in the cradle to cut out for this though (very nice), just had to extend on side a tiny bit to accommodate the larger USB end so it fit snug without putting pressure on the port by pushing it sideways any.
I picked up a Lapdock today. I can confirm that the Lapdock does work with the Incipio Feather case (have to make sure that the two connectors are snugly fit into the Lapdock cradle (adapter/ fit plate removed). See here for details (PDF): Link.

VZW Xoom Folio Case Issue

I have this case and it seems the bottom left hand corner clip doesn't hold very well around the edge of the xoom. The right clip stays on very well even with some pressure applied, however the left clip will slip off the xoom at the slightest of pressure. Has anyone else experienced this? I just wanted to make sure it wasn't just me.
I took my Xoom to Verizon and we tried at least three different folio cases and the same exact thing happens. Even their demo Xoom did the same thing. The lady said that the folio case had a 12 month warranty so she ordered the new leather folio and had it shipped to my house via next day, and asked me to bring my old folio back in after i receive it.
I hope this leather one is better.
Are you talking about the original folio case or the leather one? I have no problems what so ever on mine. The bottom corners are supposed to let go so you can use the stand part?
Is this the official Motorola one? If so then yes I am having the same problem but I can fix it with a lot of pressure.

i am having the very opposite effect... mine hold very tight... i almost have to yank it loose... purchased mine on the very first day i wonder if you have a different version, or maybe i got lucky... i guess that is how you could look at it... i find it a pain, but i would find it a bigger pain if it was loose like you say yours is.
leather case here. it holds well enough, no complaints. not tight, not loose.
I have been through two of the original folio cases, they have the exact same problem. Going to get the leather one instead.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I've got the leather folio and the top clips are flawless, always the right fit with no issues.
The bottom left has gotten loose, whereas the right seems to be just right.
YMMV, I frequently "go naked" and the repeated in/out of the Xoom on this case may have causes it loosen up a bit.
My case is the exact same. But since some people have trouble getting their case to pop loose, I consider it a "feature."

No protection for the bottom part of the tablet. Closing the case does not ensure the screen is actually protected as the part the screen is covered with can slide off of it. Dumped it quickly.

I do agree with some of the comments above however it is my case of choice. I sold a quality noreve leather case and stuck with the original Samsung book cover case as my daily driver with a solution to full protection using another protective case along with it.

You compromise portability by using two of those together. Check the one that was made by Samsung for Galaxy Tab 10.1 with a flap over the bottom part of the device and see how you could avoid using two cases instead of one.

Yes indeed it was a compromise however the weight of the two together was roughly the same as the leather case I had so for me did not matter. This setup gives me reassuarnce that even after a hard drop, the tablet should be safe whilst transporting as it is whilst on the move, that I am more likely to drop it. Once it it is in the office or at home, it is kept on the desk or on my bed without much risk of dropping and then I have the lightest and practical cover for my specific needs.
I have also purchased another bag that has a secure slot for any 10" tablet with padding around it and is used when I need to carry more than just my tablet with me and similarly when I take the tablet out, it is usually at a desk, this also eliminates the need for me to carry the second housing.
At the time of me buying my case, the one with the securing flap was not available otherwise I probably would have purchased that one instead. Having said that, I still probably would have bought a secondary case for transporting as the Samsung ones are too thin for real protection but are the most practical in my opinion.
The moral here is, if you are considering buying one of these thin cases, it is advisable to consider a second protective case or buy a fully protective leather / pu case that is adequately padded with the downside of it making the tablet feel a lot heavier.

I currently have the White GALAXY Note 10.1, and I had a faux leather case (generic) from Amazon, and gave it about 2 months of use.
After that I decided to risk my money and bet on the official book cover (in white, as well).
I must say it is extremely durable and gorgeous. It has, somehow, a corporate look, it's extremely thin and the back is well protected.
The cover, on the insides, has a thin and soft veil-like texture, and it sort of acts as a screen cleaner, each time you lift up the front part of the cover. (only applies to naked screen).
All in all, it's durable, I have the white for 2 months now and it's still the same pristine white as it was when it came in the box.
It's resistant and the writing position just works (no Steve Jobs quote intended).
If you have doubts, well, I recommend it!
official Samsung case is good looking, nice design, ****y quality and protection - mine is getting bubless by time on margins - squeezing it does remove them but wtf?! I recommend looking for something else !
I have been using the case for abouta week. I also havea screen protector on the tablet.
pros:
Very light weight
Feels good
Offers several viewing angles, when it works. See cons
Cons:
Magnets are not very strong and don't always hold it in the more up upright position.
Does not positively close, so it can expose your screen in a bag or back pack..
That said, I've been trying other solutions and none seem quite right. I have a gel case thatI bought to bulk up the tab to fit in a cheap cardboard folio usb keyboard case I have left over from another tablet. Although not very elegant, I thinkI will use it for travel as I can use the keyboard on airplanes, it provides extra protection, andI can remove three tablet with the gel case for just walking around. Just need a sturdy OTG and this set up is still less expensive than the official Samsung cover, unless you snag one of the 34.00$ deals from Amazon.
I've also tried the BT keyboard cover. Someone just needs to make one, who had actually useda tablet. Put the same clips in both sides so you don't have one that interferes with the space bar, make the shift and cap keys smaller so the keys can geta bit bigger and fall under you fingers, providea deeper trough so the tab is steadier and the back rest can be redesigned to help with that. I'm sure ZAGG will figure it out.
Finally because of the cons of the Samsung, I am thinking of ordering one of the knock offs that has the flap that closes on the back like the one for the tab10. I think I've seen it where the while thing, flap included, rolls like the iPad cover.
Finally, Samsung needs to work out the magnet thing, offer a smart cover, which should at least be possible with the phone variants.
I guess the simple answer to you question is mixed feelings about the official cover.

I ordered two knockoffs for wife and I. When it gets in from China, official covers go back to Best Buy. They offer virtually no protection and are so not worth the $50 each I paid for two.
I have a question to book cover owners: is it possible to rest your wrist on the tablet while taking notes when book cover is in the position like on the attached screen shot? Or your hand is to heavy and you and the magnet will slip of the back?
I would say that that position is ideal for typing and not the best position for resting the palm on especially if you are heavy handed as it's not really designed for taking heavy loads.

I can confirm that yes when the case is folded the back camera is covered. In order to take a picture with back camera you would need to hold up the flap while pushing the on screen capture. Not as difficult as it sounds but you look stupid doing it. I mean if your taking pictures in public with your tablet you look like a tool already so it shouldn't bother you to much. Magnetic Car Mount

I was wondering if anyone had thoughts or has even tried these types of car mounts.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Nexcon-Magn...lde-/221655676812?hash=item339bb5378c&vxp=mtr
Its magnetic so I was wondering if people thought our Nexus 5 would work with it without the metal plate they supply. Seeing as the Nexus 5 has magnets in it's back I would think the only question is if the magnets used are attracted to the ones in the Nexus 5 and the placement of the magnets. I may get one to try out but I wanted to see people's thoughts anyway.
Well as far as I am informed and seen, inside your nexus 5 are metal discs not magnets, the magnets comes in the original nexus 5 wireless charger. Hope this make it more clear, and I think they made it a bit vague so you would get it then they would simply tells you to get their magmatic cover !!!

I wasn't sure if inside the Nexus 5 are magnets or, as you say, metal disks. I know my old Palm Pre had magnets in the back of the phone for it's TouchStone charger. I actually have two of those. And the Nexus 5 actually connects with that really well. Almost like it was made for it. If these docks are similar to what the TouchStone charger is as far as magnet placement, it should work really well without that metal plate they give you. But the plate does come with it to use with a phone case just in case. So I may just put down the 10 bucks or so and see how it goes.
Cool let me know what turns out, I may kick one too off ebay
I have this one in my car http://www.amazon.com/InfiniApps-Smartphones-Cradle-less-Quick-snap-technology/dp/B00DPMNNUO/ref=sr_1_38?ie=UTF8&qid=1427845784&sr=8-38&keywords=magnetic+car+mount
It works very well, and the phone stays locked in place. It attaches to the 4 metal plates in the back cover of the Nexus 5 meant for the official Qi charger. You can't use a case though, or the magnets won't be strong enough to hold. If you do use a case (thin TPU or thin hard case only) then you will need the metal plate insert for it to work. But even still, the phone sticks way better without a case. It sticks best in vertical position, if you do landscape it needs to be centered perfectly or it will start to twist back to vertical over big bumps, it won't come off, but it will turn.
I use an nGroove Snap (http://www.amazon.com/Mountek-nGroove-Magnetic-Smartphones-Tablets/dp/B00HMDYH2U) and it works just fine even without the metal plate.

Good to know that these do in fact work without those metal plates. I thought they'd might but thanks for confirming it. I don't use a case so it should be perfect for me. I'll definitely be getting one now.
Made my own car charger. Too bad my Spigen case is too thick, so can't use it. Or I just have to risk breaking my phone by not using the case..... Dilemma...
I use kenu airframe + google Nexus qi charger = perfect solution.
I ended up buying this one and it works perfectly.

Do you need to use the included magnetic stickers? Or will it lock to the magnets inside the phone?

Nope. It works as is. And it works nicely too. If the next Nexus doesn't have magnets, I'm going to be sad.
I have another mount, I believe it's called "iMagnet" which is almost identical. After using it for the past year with my nexus 5, I have some gripes about it. It's not an incredibly solid grip, which means every bump is going to make your phone start rotating one way or the other. I like to place my phone in landscape mode but since it's in landscape mode, the phone will twist on the mount until it's touching the dash. I'll periodically move the phone back to the center of the mount while I'm driving which probably isn't safe. Ive used my phone with cases, without cases, with dbrand skins, without. The official Google "bumper" and my spigen neo hybrid are both too thick for the mount to have a good hold, so it really slides all over the place. Using a skin, doesn't affect it too much though. If I were to get another car mount I wouldn't get one of these. It's not horrible, but it just gets annoying.

I think you'll be happy with it
I have one, and I love it. I've got one of the slim Spigen cases and I put one of the metal plates between the phone and the case. I had to play with the position to make sure I could still use NFC, Qi charging, and GPS worked fine.
Now I feel super confident in my purchase. Thanks guys!
I've been happy with this one from amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V54LQO4?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00 only $10.99.

I just received it in the mail, and the build quality seems pretty good. I just had neck surgery the other day, so I won't be able to use it for at least a few weeks. I can't wait to try it out!
