Hi,
I have just bought and fitted a Eonon GA2114 Android unit
I have one or two issues please, and would really appreciate some help
1. When I hold the power button to shut the unit down, it says 'shutdown' for a second and the screen goes dark. When I power it on again it comes on immediately as if the stereo is switched on all along, just with the screen dimmed. (It does not boot up Android) - I should mention it is fitted into a campervan running off a leisure battery. Shouldn't make any difference I'd have thought but it is a permanent battery connection (No ignition on/off) is this a clue? I wondered if it was to do with the ACC wire if so?
2. When I do 'wake up' the Car Unit it seems to take quite a few seconds or so to 'prepare the SD card' - this can only refer to my permanently connected USB drive full of music (Via the rear of the unit) - surely this should be ready to use immediately the car stereo is on? It means I can't just switch on, and play music. Any ideas please as it is very annoying?
3. A brief one, what is the best locally stored Android music player to use please? for car use that is?
Many thanks for your hep
I must admit I am a little surprised to have no replies so far? Anyone pls?
Hi, is there anyone that can help me with this please. many thanks?
Any suggestions please? thanks

Does the unit come with root, if it doe you could download a reboot app, most require root to function.
I don't believe these units actually shutdown, just go into standby mode, you cab check with the ENON techs.
No root as far as I am aware, a good idea otherwise thank you. I am still unable to fully power off (Or reboot) the unit. It seems to draw a lot of power and will drain the Leisure Battery for sure. I have emailed Eonon a few days ago, but not heard anything back. Not sure if they are active in any of the forums for a quicker response?
As for the USB Memory Stick with music on, I am still having the problem of 'unexpectedly removed' and 'preparing SD card' each and every time the unit is first used / turned on. Any ideas please as it's driving me bananas! thank you
I have the same unit and yeah it says powering off and it isn't powering off at all, it is even still connected to my phone via bluetooth when it has supposedly powered off!

Thanks for your reply, that is interesting. I have had two replies from Eonon so far. As I thought the ACC cable may be the culprit.
1. Unit can not shutting down completely
Please check whether you have connect the ACC wire always on BATT? If yes, this unit cannot turn off completely.
Please find the ACC control wire on the Fuse box location, then connect the ACC wire to the ACC control wire, the unit can turn on and off via key.
2. If you use the USB Memory Stick to play music? If so does yours have the delay issue as well? )Answer from Eonon copied below so far:
Yes, it will show message when you plug in or plug out SD/USB, this can not change.
But if it shows some error message that make the SD/USB would not work, would you please take a picture to show us?

I have the ACC wire connected correctly as when I turn the ignition off the stereo acknowledges this and turns off/powers down but that function is hard wired supposed to turning the unit off at the on/off/volume knob (while the ignition is on). Their answer is just avoiding the issue as the unit turns off fine with the ignition, it doesn't power down like it says it is when the ignition is on. I just turned my 'off' with the ignition on and could still connect to it via bluetooth....
I can't comment on point 2 as i've yet to rig my amps up and play any music!

Mmmmmm, thats not quite so good then. I was thinking that it might be the ACC as mine is running from a permanently 'on' Leisure Battery. I will probably pop the stereo out and have a look in the next week or so as I can't really change the battery situation (The idea is so that I don't run the starter battery down as it is a CamperVan)
I must say though that I am impressed with the sound (I have been testing PowerAmp, and PlayerPro and they both look and sound STUNNING, the standard player kept skipping for me at least)
I'm still looking into the other thing (Memory Stick) it works, but it's annoying really
I just got my unit yesterday and installed, so far very good device.
I noticed there is a setting in setup to delay shutdown for 30 seconds, and up... Maybe you are not waiting long enough for complete shutdown.
If you had the ACC wired to Battery, the unit screen would not shut off (i think).
ACC being connected to a permanent live compounds the problem as whenever ACC is live i.e ignition turned on, you can't power the unit down at all even though holding down the power button it clearly states "shutting down" when in reality it merely turns the screen off.
Thank you tiff_lee, I think that is exactly what happens in my case (Just the screen goes off)
It is draining my 12v battery rather quickly! If I was to disconnect the ACC cable will I still be able to power it on and use normally? (In my case the car stereo works from a campervan leisure battery. The idea being that you can have the radio on at any time without the ignition having to be on. Also it doesn't drain your starter battery at all)
Many thanks
ACC is accessory power. Accessory power is only powered when a key is on. If you don't have it wired to a ACC source then it won't properly shut off. Wire the ACC with the power wires and put a toggle switch between the battery and the power wires. I would think that would solve the problem.

If I understand your first post correctly you have the ACC connected all the time so yes the unit would effectively be on all the time hence the power drain. Leave the main power connected at all times as this also powers your memory, connect the ACC wire to a 12V+ supply via a toggle/selector switch and just turn it on (via toggle switch) when you want the unit on.
That aside though it doesn't change the fact that the unit does not power off when it says it is.
Hi
Been following this thread and having same issues I only have mine connected by the iso adapters and the unit doesn't seem to shut down fully, have had 1 flat battery so far after not using the van for several days on recharging battery and turning on it showed full start up screens.
Other issues are not being able to turn off the radio once turned on apart from in settings "force stop app"
No voice guidance in the Sygic GPS app.
Someone asked for a good music app,try N7 player, also Smart launcher is very good ,have it on all our Android stuff.

I have bought a Pumpkin KD-C0224 Android car unit and it's working great.
1. Have met the battery drained issue before and the Pumpkin seller suggested me exchange the "ACC" and the "B+" of the iso adapter.
They explained that the “ACC” and the “B+” of my car is opposite to the iso adapter, so I tried and it worked.
2. Maybe your USB Memory Stick is beyond the unit can support, or you can try other USB device with less than 32GB to check.
3. I have Spotify on my unit and its great, I think.
Hello,
someone did you solve this problem? I use the same multimedia Eonon GA2114 and have the same problem .In the moment extinguish my car out inscription 'unexpectedly removed SD card' Just to give contact and back contact without starting the engine again my written 'unexpectedly removed SD card'.
After starting my written 'preparing SD card' and starts from the first song. I'm tired just listening to the same song Please if anyone can help.
I have a very similar problem which has only started to happen recently on my Eonon head unit.
The problem is when you turn the unit off it shows a message saying "storage unexpectedly removed". When you turn on the head unit again it has to remount the USB drive and it starts playing music again from the beginning of the MP3. It never remembers the last play position of the MP3. This happens on various makes of freshly formatted USB sticks. Its very annoying....
I have done a full factory reset, disconnected the power and also re-connected all the cables from the back of the unit - but this did not resolve the problem.
Not really sure what to try next...any suggestions would be very much appreciated!

How is the drive powered?
I am hoping I can find some help in here with a couple problems I am running into on this system that would make it so much better to me.
The system is basically an Android box utilizing the touch screen and monitor of my Uconnect 8.4 head unit. The naming in the settings is rk3188 and is running on KitKat 4.4.4, so it is some variant of the Android TV boxes. If there are other specs or info that are needed to help in possibly fixing my issues please let me know.
Issue 1: although not major, there is no option to have OK Google from any screen. Having this option for a car system is obviously something helpful. In the settings of the Google App trying to access the menu for OK Google detection doesn't work, so I can't even get to the screen where that option lives. I have the most up to date version of Google App and Google Play Services. I have Google searched on ways to fix this but nothing has brought that ability up. I know Android version 4.4.4 was capable of this. There was another app that utilized Googles voice engine and allowed this function but Google made him stop using their servers and killed that as an option.
Issue 2: this is the biggest bother to me and I could not find anything even related to what's happening in my searches. The system comes loaded with some apps and using Launcher3 for its front end, it has big buttons but offers almost no ability to customize it. The bottom row has apps that you cannot switch out to anything else, and 3 of them I will never be using. The system works but is not as nice as it could look or function. The obvious answer is to use a different launcher which is where the problem arises. I have tried to use Nova and Apex so far with the same very frustrating outcome. After the install everything is great, I can set the screen up to look amazing and add icons and functionality that really make it a great experience. So everything is working lovely then I shut my truck off and go do whatever. The next time I come back I start the truck up everything loads fine, the new launcher and everything I did to it is working just as expected until about 5 minutes in the screen goes black for a second and then the system goes through a factory reset. Really? Are you kidding me? The first couple times I thought maybe I hit something because I hadn't fully put my truck back together but after playing with it more and having the system factory reset 5 other times I have concluded it is related to changing the launcher. I tried Nova first, then I tried Apex with the same outcome and same sequence of events. Obviously it's annoying everytime testing this because updating and reentering my info everytime just to try the launcher again is time consuming. The last test the only thing I did was a different launcher so that has to be it, but why and how can I fix it?
If anyone has any clue how using a different launcher would cause a factory reset to happen please help me out. Or if there is anything I can do to this system to prevent that. My last resort thought would be to root it but I read someone else who has this system that rooting it caused screen layout issues and made things go 90 degrees off? The loaded apps in the system have touch screen calibration and screen resizing which might be necessary for this to function with the monitor.
Thanks for any help.
I spoke with someone else that has the system and they are not having any issues with running a different launcher so something happen to my particular device. I contacted the company and they will be getting me the firmware to refresh it and hopefully that fixes the resetting issue.
i am looking to get this also. I am very curious how you like the device - it looks great though a bit out of date. Waze & email should work well. How much storage does it have? Can you add a sd card or something?

I'm getting a new unit sent out, it seems there are 2 versions and for whatever reason mine wouldn't let me customize the launcher.
But even though it's outdated, every app I tried worked just fine, they still install the latest versions. The system has 8gb of on board storage and a microSD card slot that is mainly for loading maps for offline navigation. I think you can still access it for other uses, but they have a better option for that. There is a USB input for flash drives or external drives. I tried my 2TB external drive on it and it accessed my movies fine from it.
How did you get it installed? Who?
got any pics?
Actually I would be interested in this too, I have an Alfa Romeo and the Uconnect 6.5 (european version) which isn't that great, it would be nice to attach a sort of box with ARM hardware running on Android and using the display and touch of the existing Uconnect. The question is, how this can be done?

I would check out this thread. It has two videos that walk you through the entire process - great info!
I also bought this latest Android system V4 2 weeks ago. Auto launcher pro app is very good working. At the moment there is a issue with the system time, which is not correctly synchronized with gps time. Carperformance Team is working on a fix for that. How can I get root Access for this Android 7 System?

glad to hear i'm not going crazy with the clock but there is an issue.
I just bought and installed a V4 a couple weeks back too.
i must have left a loose connection cause i keep having to recall the touchscreen for android. I half-arsed the install cause we were leaving for a 2k mile roadtrip the next day- need to take it apart and do it right. Luckily you can connect a usb mouse in to trigger the calibration app.
id also love root- at the moment im trying to figure out if the one usb port is safe to connect an A to A usb cable into to get ADB. apparently on some versions of nvida sheild, you can. If they provide a firmware update for the clock fix then maybe that gets us an image to futz with for root.
a keyboard also works in teh usb port and i've tried a handful of key combos during boot to get to recovery but haven't stumbled on it yet.
I'll post back if i find anything

Hi @michaelk
Good to hear that I am not alone here with this special system V4. Except for the issue with the system time and no root access, I am fully satisfied so far. I hope to fix it soon. If we had root access then we could solve this issue with the system time with some time apps ourselves.
Thank you for your experiences.

wiring harness investigation
so played around some today.
I've got an issue where I need to recalibrate the screen almost every time I boot. it seems the box (or card added to the radio?) forgets things and only works the bottom right corner and also seems to rotate 90 degrees at boot. The end result is unusable screen. I think carperformance is just a reseller because of their response. They're friendly and reply quickly but are really unable to help. The first answer was just randomly fiddle with screen and try to find calibrate setting and reboot- that proved impossible and on my own I discovered a 6 dollar USB mouse from the Walmart could be used to navigate to the calibrate app. When I inquired again when it got more frequent they basically said it's not normal and offered no help except to adjust a personalization setting to run calibrate on boot- that only works once that I can figure (might be related to weird time bug)- so I settled on having tasker run calibrate on each boot. I wonder if there is a battery in the box that needs changing but the warranty sticker keeps me out for not- might add an external battery to keep it alive for a longer time to minimize the rebooting
Anyway took everything apart today to double-check and can't find any connection issues. I traced the harness a bit to try and understand a little and basically, the skinny cables run the daughterboard to snag the screen output and the touchscreen input. But i wanted to figure out what is tapped from the radio harness to the large white plug on the box and see if anything going on their .
DISCLAIMER- I NEED TO CONFIRM (it was hot - laughing) but basically seems what is tapped in radio harness is:
1) power and ground also
2) L&R aux audio signal- interesting here is they tapped a single ground (physically next to the right signal) for common. Earlier i had the RAX hack and their harness used a ground for each L&R and their aux input worked all the time without the little plugin shunt thing to trick aux input. When i dug some more and found a pin diagram from mopar I found that the 'left' ground is actually labeled "aux audio device detect signal" I need to play some more to see what happens but my guess is if we put a switch on that to short it to ground then the aux would just work to avoid the hokey plug.
3) Here's the fun- holding the screen to flip inputs could be the daughterboard running things. BUT since it also reacts to the left steering wheel button pack and switches inputs itself when you need the reverse cam- i figured it reads the can bus. and sure enough, it looks like it taps CAN IHS (+) and CAN IHS (-). Very cool that it would get into the whole bus and read anything- BUT since there are other FCA vehicles that don't auto-switch inputs on revers and they have alternate connections it seems the real dev is not involved to update things to sniff for other reverse signals. Reading around here- seems that there is probably a custom serial port someplace in the box that reads this and there's probably no documentation for us to do anything ourselves. But one can hope...

So the spec for the chipset for the V4 says it can handle an OTG port and a couple (maybe 3?) other USB ports. Obviously, the box only has the one USB A port visible on the pigtail. I wish we could get in the box and look for a header for the OTG port to help rooting but.... the darn warranty sticker.
on the FCA/Dodge side of things- I have a Durango with a USB port and SD card reader in the dash (USB Media "Hub" Apparently, FCA uses USB Mini B connectors to interconnect all the ports and the radio. They use latching connectors that are keyed but if you undo them there's a standard USB mini B in there. They do some odd male/female things so you have to pay attention to where you undo cables, but bottom line you can undo the connector on the back of the dash's USB port and stuff a USB mini B female on it and connect it to whatever host device you want.
I first tried an old laptop in case there's anything weird going on. My Dash "Hub" actually has 2 mini-B connectors and a multipin auto harness. Without the harness when you connect it to windows it sees a USB Hub, but the USB port was still dead. So I assumed it needs power from the harness on the back of the dash hub and connected that. UP popped up a USB mass storage device which I believe is the SD card reader- didn't get around to confirming and then the USB port also comes to life. Knowing that it was safe at that point I connected it to the USB A Host port on the box and presto chango now I have the in-dash port connected to the android tv box without any exposed wiring.
Connected the "android auto dongle" through the cars USB port and that works perfectly. I ordered a used 2 USB dash hub from eBay (later model years have 2 and will see what that does. The pictures of that also show the 2 mini B ports- I'll play some more when I get that. I'm not sure what is in those dongles but from the other folks hacking android auto into older models (by using newer radios) apparently, one port works for android auto and the other doesn't. The scuttle is its a body module programming thing but I wonder if maybe there's something physical in there and so the dongle won't be necessary any longer with the new hub? My other thought is if the two USB min B jacks allow you to connect to 2 different hosts- I would try one on the original Uconnect (in case I ever need to update the software) and the other for the android TV box.
So apparently the android tv box handles hubs just fine. As I mentioned earlier it handles a mouse or USB keyboard fine. Also, I played around and connected my hotspot by USB instead of wifi so the device sees it as a modem and that works just fine- so I assume a USB modem works out of the box too. (again odd if that works that carperformance sells a hotspot and not USB modem- like they don't know what the box can do)
I disassembled my display 2 times until it worked. After the first start, I had a black screen. I thought that was it... After 3 times it finally worked. I also had a cable on the plug which has easily resolved. I think you will also have a loose contact somewhere. One time I also had the display calibration gone. Then I connected my old usb keyboard and could then start the display calibration. I reset the system before. So far, the system works without problems. I also have a passive 4-way usb hub to connect.
I have already connected cables for the frontcam but have not yet moved into the engine compartment.
In the video tutorial of Carperformance, you can see when you switch to drive, the display then changes to the frontcam or signal from the cam, but the display does not change to the Frontcam signal with me.
Do you have with you the signal on the display of the camera when switching to drive?
Adw2 = bad mix
Went back and forth many times in email and turns out my calibration issue was probably all ADW2 launcher, guess it conflicts with whatever app they use to communicate with the display.
in the process of troubleshooting I got the update zip for the current version but I don't think those have recovery partition in there and so can't help root? I need to read some more.
I've ripped everything apart like 12 times with the screen, so that my front cam is not connected right now. For the brief time I had it, it was connected to one of the smaller video in pin connectors and don't think it worked in drive by itself, but can't really say for certain. I think certain models can't get the canbus command to see reverse and if I understand they connect in to the video in on the main connector and then use a point on the car that is energized to trigger the switch on that connection. If your adventurous they seem to have to flip a dip also. I think it's the Cherokees or maybe grand Cherokee so maybe Google their thread's? This site gives connector pin outs
http://connectors.dcctools.com/home.htm
There might be a lead for the drive on your shifter if lucky. I think I read the reverse shoulder comes from a body control box in the passenger wheel well?
Also they're super friendly and never wrong when you email but they can be brief. So you could ask if there's a dipswitch to flip to enable auto switching one of the inputs. Hec maybe we should just ask for a table of where the dips do...
(Sorry for any typos... Will try to edit later)
Supposedly it is enough to connect the extra input cable for DVD or CMMB. That answered me Carperformance. Before, I had no external input cable connected. That's why no signal came. The OEM rearcam works flawlessly.

It's a cheaper fix but so no solution. Carperformance should offer a software update with root access. Then we would be satisfied. We should expect it for the money.
My frontcam is working now good.
You already tried Android auto? Which USB dongle do you use? Do you need a special app for this?
My China usb dongle does not want to connect properly with my oneplus 6T.
Edit:
Android auto is working with Pumpkin USB dongle and autoplaybox app. The noname China scrap goes back to shop.
The time fix is working until now also. Thanks for this info. The carperformance, they wrote or informed the affected people who ordered it. I did not get any info.

besides powering your camera and connecting the yellow RCA video signal did you have to do anything else?
something with the red signal wire maybe?
I cant consistently get a signal on my front cam and not sure if the camera is bad or my setup

few other notes for others-
FCA "aux audio device detect signal" harness line is actually normally closed (I think shorted to ground)- if you break the connection the oew radio flips right to aux in. make the connection again and it flips back to previous input.
the in dash usb port is infact a powered hub. I originally had a usb + SD card combo and replaced it with 2 usb port and works fine. FCA uses mini b connections to it- just use a usb a to mini b cable to connect it to the android auto box and your indash usb port(s) will work on android auto (And provide more watts to charge your stuff). oddly either dahs hub has a second usb mini b connector that i played around with a little but never could figure out what it does
more can bus fun! - i updated the dongle firmware on the android auto dongle sold direct from carperforance and now it has a beta feature to map buttons. somehow it seems to be sniffing the canbus through the android tv box. it has arrow keys, numbers, enter, etc and you use the app to select the input to assign then you press the same button on the car twice- it sniffs the signal and assignes it. I My durango has the button packs on the steering wheel and i was able to assign up, down, left, right and get it to have the android auto respond. Need to play more but i think it actually goes android wide. For example i think the down button on my steering wheel was sending page down to the chrome browser i had open on the box. Pretty cool stuff if they expand that.
Hi!
I am planning to repurpose my Galaxy Nexus (Maguro) running CM13 as a media player/rear view camera viewer for my car.
I want to use a USB OTG camera, so I cannot use the micro USB port to charge the phone at the same time (or can I), so I tried ironing the power wires of the USB cable directly to he pins of the battery and it worked
I use a charger which provides power to the phone when the car engine is on, but the problem is that I need to turn on the phone manually every time...
Is there a way to make the phone boot automatically when it gets power?
I saw some threads for other phones which wanted to boot the phone when the charger was connected (not sure if that would be helpful for me but anyway). They achieved that by modifying a file called lpm in system/bin. However my phone doesn't have such file...
Thanks in advance for your help!
I found a file called pm and editted that one but nothing changed...
Help please!!!
I just received my Nexus 7 Gen 2 from an Ebay seller. It came with LineageOS 14.1-20180913-NIGHTLY-Flo installed.

I have it running carplay pretty flawlessly with the carlinkit wireless carplay adapter (USB dongle).
Now, I have 2 really big issues I need to resolve:
1) I cannot charge the Nexus while the dongle is connected. When I hook a wireless charger to the Nexus, it will only charge when nothing is plugged into the micro USB slot.
2) The only way to wake the screen (after it goes to sleep with the set 5 minute timeout) is to press the top power button. That button is very hard to locate when driving. I need to activate touch to wake or swipe to wake or something.
For 1 and 2 above, what are my options? Is there a version upgrade of the LineageOS that I can get that will address those 2 issues? If not, what would you suggest? Thanks in advance. I'm sure this is going to be great but these 2 issues are a major buzzkill for my carplay joy.

Here are some pics of my N7 wireless carplay setup
FWIW, here are a few shots of my setup with the Nexus 7, the Carlinkit wireless carplay adapter, the 3 tail USB adapter cable (I purchased in the event wireless charging + OTG not possible and I have to connect a charger cable to the micro USB slot to make this work). I'm also using the analog audio output of the tablet to route the sound through my car audio.

Both issues can be resolved with ElementalX kernel, which features:
doubletap2wake
USB OTG + charge mode
If "USB OTG + charge mode" does not work, make no-battery mod which is preferred for car installations anyway.

Sweet! So, basically I can install that kernal over top of my existing 14.1 LOS or is there more to it than that? I haven't modded a device before, this one, luckily, already came with LOS pre-installed.
Reading through that opening post, it appears all those functions are "optional". I suppose I'll figure out how to opt-in soon enough, lol.
Also, it says "For fixed-install (Complete working OTG+charge mode) Use version 5.16", so I guess I should follow that?

Yes, for LOS14.1 just install ElementalX-N7-6.17. "Optional" means that you need to activate it during setup.
First try "OTG+charge mode" with your existing LOS. If it does not work AND you don't like the no-battery mod, then do:
install TWRP, backup your LOS and copy the backup to a PC
install stock 6.0.1 - RESTOCK simplifies the process
install ElementalX-N7-5.16 ("For fixed-install - Complete working OTG+charge mode")

OK, I don't think my existing LOS (14.1 as indicated in my opening post screenshot) has an OTG+charge mode option, so I expect what you mean by that is to install ElementalX. To be certain, which version are you referring to? ElementalX-N7-6.17 or ElementalX-N7-5.16-cm (I'm assuming "cm" stands for "charge mode") or something else?

After checking out the video, it looks pretty interesting but my concern is that the tablet will basically have to reboot with every time the car engine stop and starts? Unless there is something I'm missing?
The "no battery" option, the more I read about it, may just be the way to go. I just need to figure out where/how to tap a source of constant power to supply to the tablet. I've just purchased a "new" N7 battery from ebay to use as a backup in the event I screw mine up doing this mod. I thought I might be able to buy a ready made cable but no searches returned on ebay for that.
One thing I'm still not certain about is if the no battery option compromises in any way, my ability to connect an OTG device to the tablet. Because the carplay dongle adapter MUST be connected to tablet and its the heart of my carplay solution I'm doing all this for.
With that done, I suppose I'd just need the swipe/touch to wake functionality. Is there an easy way to get that added as a one-click install through the Google Play store over top of my existing LOS 14.1?

Let's clarify:
ElementalX-N7-6.17 - use with LOS14.1 or stock 6.0.1
ElementalX-N7-5.16 - use with stock 6.0.1
ElementalX-N7-5.16-cm - use with Cyanogenmod (obsolete version of LOS), don't consider it
cm = Cyanogenmod, not "charge mode"
no-battery mod power connection --> ACC/ACCESSORY ignition position or car-battery-direct (*)
doubletap2wake - no Play Store alternative
OTG - no conflict with the no-battery mod
The no-battery mod is really recommended as Li-po batteries do not last long in cars. However without the mod, make sure to activate "Battery life extender" in the kernel's setup.
(*) in direct connection, N7 will drain the car battery after ~2 months of parking (50mA @ screen off) if you don't turn it off.
Thanks for the help. So my task is to install ElementalX-N7-6.17 onto my N7.
I could not find ElementalX-N7-6.17 through a Play Store search, so I'm assuming maybe I will need to download the ROM to a PC/Mac (I have Macs, no PCs) and then connect the N7 to the PC and unzip/extract/copy the 6.17 files over to the N7, disconnect and then restart the N7 to finish the install.
Is that about right? I'm sure I'm oversimplifying. Or should I simply be able to direct install the EX 6.17 software onto my device through the Play Store?
Update: I found a video that seems to be on point for the level I'm at (total newbie to modding devices) and it appears I first need to install a "Custom Recovery" app onto my N7, Based on your suggestions above, I expect that's the TWRP app?

How? Do I need to use TWRP for this or should I just be able to do a Play Store search for "ElementalX-N7-6.17" and install it. I'm guessing not, because that search does not appear to return the result. In the response below, it appears to indicate if the above fails, THEN use TWRP, so I'm stuck at this point because after installing TWRP, the "TWRP Flash" option does not offer ElementalX-N7-6.17 as an option. It does offer several "device images" to choose from so I choose what appears to be the latest one at the top of the list "twrp-3.3.1-0-flo.img" which takes me to a download page. After downloading the img, opening it just appears to have downloaded a web page, not an img.

Kinda spinning in circles here, but after finding no mirrors available to download ElementalX-N7-6.17, I installed "Root Checker" and find that it says "Sorry! Root access is not properly installed on this device"
Maybe I need that for above stuff to work? I probably just need to walk away and come back later. Confused.
Update: I was finally able to get a mirror to download the ElementalX-N7-6.17.zip to my Nexus. Appreciate any help on what to do next. Since this is just a zip file and does not appear to contain an installer, I suppose I need one. Not sure which or how. Thanks in advance for clearing the path for me to get this installed.

I assume that the previous N7 owner had installed TWRP already to flash LOS, if so please do:
copy ElementalX-N7-6.17.zip to N7
boot TWRP
in TWRP "install" the zip and preset desired ElementalX options
boot system - all done
If the above does not work for some reason, here is the complete setup:
copy ElementalX-N7-6.17.zip to N7
setup fastboot on Mac
boot N7 in fastboot mode and connect it to your Mac
install TWRP
boot TWRP
in TWRP "install" the zip and preset desired ElementalX options
boot system - all done

If they did, they must have deleted it. I've installed it via the Play Store.

There is no "install" button per say, there are 3 options I see, they are:
TWRP Flash
Backup Existing Recovery
Network Statistics
Opening TWRP Flash it asks me to "Select Device". I choose "Asus Nexus 7 2013 WI-FI -- Flo
Next screen shows "Current Device: flo" then "Select a device image to download", there are several files labeled "twrp-x.x.x-0-flo.img".
Not sure what to do next, there is nowhere there to install the zip I downloaded. Perhaps it has to be placed in a certain directory.

You've got a lot to learn. Turn off your N7, Boot into Recovery(TWRP) by holding POWER an Volume Up buttons simultaneously. Install the elementalkernel.zip file from there. There are tutorials around the web with complete step by step instructions that you should check out.

Done and now I'm upgraded. I can't believe how simple it was once I understood exactly how to do it. They key was what "Boot" actually means and specifically "Boot into Recovery" and how to do it with POWER and VOLUME UP.
Can’t say enough how much I appreciate the help on this leading me through my first attempt at customizing an OS.
The tablet now wakes up when the screen is tapped. I can’t yet get swipe to wake or swipe to sleep working (I did enable those options during install) but most importantly the tablet now charges in my car while the car play adapter is connected to USB.
I have the screen sleep set at max 30 mins and it still steadily gains charge faster than I expected with CarPlay connected and audio output from the 3.5mm audio out. As a bonus, if the tablet is sleeping, it wakes as soon as I turn in the car due to fact it’s connected via the accessory power (cigarette lighter socket with 2.4amp USB adapter plugged in).
One interesting thing is that the OTG device (the CarPlay dongle) does not appear to get power from the battery. It only works when I plug a usb power source into the pigtail adjacent to the dongle. I suppose this is normal?
Some things I’d still like to do I’m not sure if possible via the elementalX options:
1) Force sleep when the power is cut.
2) get swipe to sleep to work
3)

OTG+Charge mode disables self-powered OTG, external power source required.
For sleep when power is cut look into apps like Tasker or MacroDroid.
Swipe to sleep, make sure you doing it right. I'm using ElementalX 7.0, it's a quick swipe LEFT on the NAV bar, not status/notification bar. Some other kernel i used long ago (might have been older elementalx) was a swipe right on notification bar. Try different swiping combinations.

Thanks. I'll check my gestures and location for swipe to sleep. On the self-powered OTG issue, I believe its confusing my "Carlinkit wireless carplay dongle" a bit - which the developer is actively updating to address issues so maybe its the dongle and not the new settings on the tablet or maybe its a combination. Its like the dongle is not getting power some of the time despite that its connected the exact same as a previous driving session where it worked as expected. This dongle connects via Wifi to the phone. And I'm using a 3 way splitter to allow the dongle and a power cable to be connected at the same time.
Between driving sessions, its hit or miss whether it connects or not. I had to reboot the tablet once to get the dongle to come alive. I'm going to have to troubleshoot what's going on. I haven't had the dongle long enough to know if the problem is with it or with the new settings on the table for OTG_Charge mode.
I suppose it could be one of a few things:
- The tablet
- The dongle
- The cable
- The Power source (a 2 port USB adapter connected to the 12 volt cigarette lighter socket)
FWIW, here's my new carplay setup and thanks to you guys help:
The tablet fits just about perfect in that location. I currently have the two left and right dashboard panel covers slightly ajar and the bottom tablet corners wedge fit behind them. The tablet hasn't budged all day while driving. I'm going to cut out recesses in those panels to allow the tablet to slide in there. In person, It actually appears close to a factory setup but for USB and audio cables coming off the tablet - those are routed behind those cover plates out of sight.
I spent some more time today working with the tablet after the ElementalX upgrade and I believe I understand what's happening now with the connected OTG device failing to come back online after power shut off.
So, since the OTG device is now getting its power from the same cable that's now responsible for charging the N7 (rather than from the battery), when I cut off my car engine, the accessory power source is shut off and the OTG device loses power abruptly. With battery power it would not have to deal with this every time the car engine/accessory power is stopped/started.
So, what appears to be happening is that the OTG device does not like losing power in that way and the only way I can get it to connect again once that happens, is to reboot the Nexus.
I suppose the "No Battery" hack would resolve the issue, since the OTG device would never be shut down and should remain in a ready state at all times.
Short of that, I guess I'll just have to keep rebooting the N7 whenever the dongle crashes. I've tried shutting down the "Autokit" application before shutting down the car engine, but the device is still crashing when power is lost.
Hello there !
I want to make a car installation with my galaxy S9, so I need it to shutdown at the same time of the car (solved with root and tasker) but despite of all my research an attemps, I can't figure out how to boot when usb charge on.
I tried lpm method, but no way, the lpm file comes back as new and as there is no fastboot, the so-called method don't work either.
As this phone will only stream music to my car with bubble upnp, I don't mind if I need another OS, but as I paid for rooting, if I could keep the actual one it would be nice.
Thanks for your help and take care !
