Home button stopped working... - Sprint Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I walked in the rain very briefly and have an Otterbox on it... What is the best way to determine that it is a hardware problem and what are my options? (I have the phone for nearly a year, I doubt warranty applies).
I am get pretty tired of using software home button. Note - button doesn't work in recovery mode either.

The warranty is for a year. If the Knox bit Is tripped it's said warranty is voided. I've seen many members who have had Hardware issues repaired even with it tripped after flashing back to unrooted stock. Call samsung support... Don't mention you are rooted if that's the case.

[Q] galaxy nexus power button problem

Ok so iv had my GN for four days now and its developed a problem with the power button.
Sometimes when i try to turn the screen on via the power button it wont respond, at first. It happend last night for the first time, i tried to unlock it and nothing happend, then after trying about 5_6 times it rebooted. Same thing happend this morning.
Has anyone else had this problem?
Does anyone think this could be software or hardware issue?
The phone is completely stock running 4.0.1 on tmoble uk.
Anyones help or opinion would be appreciated.
Try updating to 4.0.2 before you write it off as hardware problem.

Thought about that but it would mean rooting , my fear is that it becomes permenant , then my warrenty would be void , i did have it on face unlock when this was happening i have now changed to slide and as yet ive had no problem , i will post here if the problem is fixed for anyone who is interested
I thought the stock build is 4.0.2?
Have you tried pinging for an update in the settings menu?

Rooting is not permanent. You can remove it by delete the SuperUser apk and binary; that's what root is. Or if you're paranoid, flash a stock image.
Then lock the bootloader. Hooray, your device is stock.

Yeah i do understand that, my fear is while rooted that the problem becomes permanent (at least for me) then while off for repairs they see that its rooted and tell me to get lost!
Iv had a few problems with this phone like locking up while adding widgets to home screen, locking up half way though a phone call, browser hanging all the time and of course the power button all of which resulting in a battery pull.
Id come to expect this kind of behavior over the last year & 1/2 from my hd2 as it wasnt ment to run android in the first place, but this is a google flagship.
Maybe i just got a dud or maybe its the stock 4.0.1 has anyone on custom rom had any of the above problems?
i think the point is that you can unroot it and they cannot tell the difference that it was ever rooted in the first place. and get your warranty fix.

Yes, but his point is if the power button becomes unresponsive while he is attempting to root/unroot the phone then he wont be able to complete the process.
I haven't experienced anything like what you're describing on my Galaxy Nexus, even while I was running 4.0.1. Does the power button only become unresponsive when you're turning the phone on/off? Or does this happen while trying to lock/unlock the phone as well? If it only happens while you're using the face-unlock feature then it could be a software bug and flashing could fix it...
I would call either Samsung or your carrier about it before deciding to root/flash it myself. Perhaps your carrier will just switch it out for another one they have in stock.
I have experienced this problem as well with the power button. I have the GSM version and I haven't received the 4.0.2 update but I did receive the ITL41F update. After about three or four presses of the power button it becomes responsive again. I think you might be getting the resets if you press the power button repeatedly without waiting a few seconds I'm between presses to get it responsive again. I also do not think it is hardware related and may be some kind of software bug. I am waiting patiently for the updates.

yes thats exatly my point, although i really am leaning toward software as tk123456789 pointed out if i wait a few seconds it will come on though only after i got rid of the face unlock, using face unlock it was a lot worse. Im thinking if it were hadware it would either work or not,
BTW this problem is when i unlock the phone and not when turning it on, i dont think i made that clear.
my power button has stopped working....it only works sometimes but it usually acts like im holding it down....if i pull the battery and put it back in, it boots up by itself and i dont even press anything...idk what to do and im freaking out
I wonder if this is becoming a known problem with Samsung devices. Do me a favor and shake your phone a few times. Try it every now and then until it wakes your phone or the power menu pops up. Means the switch is busted and the contact is floating around. This is what was going on with my Captivate and I haven't found a fix, nor do I want to solder on a new power button.
I left it in rice overnight and now everything is working perfectly! Hopefully it stays that way! It may have gotten wet from my XO skin application! Never ever ever again with a wet apply! NEVER!
Edit: its still doing the same thing again...spoke too soon

I got my GSM Unlocked Galaxy Nexus from the Play Store two days ago and am experiencing the same issues with the power button. It worked fine for the first 24 hours.
I'm on the phone with Google right now to get a replacement phone which is nice because they're contacting Samsung on my behalf.
(I'm within the 14-day replacement policy for new devices)
Flash manually the official 4.0.4 IMM76I.. And relock your bootloader after that and try.. Thats it

similar Issue:
I bought a used, rooted Galaxy Nexus. Due to my own (drunken) stupidity not long after my purchase I caused a scratch on the glass covering the display. As I did not want to pay for a out-of-warrenty repair, I left the device as it was.
Some time after, my power button became unresponsive. As it took 3-5 presses to activate the screen I installed the app "PGM Galaxy Nexus" that allows to wake the device with a swipe gesture. Not to long after, the power button stopped responding all together. While researching a permanent solution, my battery died.
In order to be able to use my phone as soon as possible, I brought it to a local (and unfortunately, unauthorized) repair shop. The repair shop tested quicky for any further defects (by plugging the phone into a wall charger - I had done the same at home) and quoted me 50€ for the repair. Some time after, they emailed me that the replacement of the power button did not repair the device. They said however, that the "main power supply IC" is most likely at fault and that a replacement would cost about 120€. As I could not find this chip in the teardown pictures at ifixit, I am not sure if I should invest further trust in the repairshop. In addition and as writen above, charging the device was no problem at all. In fact, I charged the battery that was in my Galaxy Nexus to 100% before bringing it in.
This is where my questions start:
1.: Is a defect of the "main power supply IC" a known defect at all? If there are known defects of the "main power supply IC" are those defects linked to a faulty power button?
2.: Currently, my plan of action is to collect the device and contact Samsung to have it repaired by Samsung itself. Does this mean sending it in? Do they have authorized repair centers like Nokia used to have (NSC) where I could just bring it in?
3.: What might the cost of the repair be? Can it be noticed that the device was opened before? Is root a problem when sending it in for repair?
I would be greatly thankfull for any device and in case I forgot to provide any details, please feel free to ask.

Volume button

So last week I notcied that my volume rocker isnt clicking. Its really hard to press. I chatted with tmobile and they said bring it in and they would see if it was a fault in the phone. Its been in a case since i bought it a week after release.
anyways. my only concern is that its rooted and running sinless. Do you think they will also check the knox if i revert it to stock or just look at the hardware part of it? Im sure they wouldnt care but samsung might? should i get it replaced or do it myself?

if it works come back and press the thanks button!:fingers-crossed:

About to buy - question on OS and Home button placement

As the subject stated:
1. If I buy this tablet today, would it have 4.3? I don't want Kit Kat because of the SD card issue and VPN issue
2. The Home button is on the side. I now have an iPad Air for work and most of the time hold the tablet in portrait mode. With this tablet, wouldn't I keep accidentally touching the Home button and/or soft key?

1. Probably depends on what country you are purchasing the tablet in. I sell a lot of these in the US, and for the past 2 months, they have all had 4.4.2 out of the box. I assume it would be the same for any country that has had the 4.4.2 update released.
2. You can always rotate the tablet 180°. If you're holding it in your left hand, have the buttons on the right. If you're holding it in your right hand, have the buttons on the left.
Rotation is what I unhappily do.

You mentioned you sell a lot of these. I assume you also deal with customer warranty issue?
I am just wondering because there is no root for the SM-P600 without tripping KNOX. If I root, KNOX tripped, and I need to send to Samsung for warranty, I am afraid Samsung will reject it and I am out of $600.
No, I don't deal with anything warranty-related, so I'm not entirely sure how that works.
However, I have heard varying reports on KNOX tripped devices and warranty status. Seems to be mostly luck of the draw. If there is no way that rooting could have caused the issue, it seems some people have still had their warranties honored. But this is just what I've heard, and isn't anything official.

[Q] Unrooting to get Samsung warranty

Has anyone unrooted by flashing stock rom using Odin even though Knox remains tripped and sent in phone to Samsung for repair without issue. I am having back button issues lately but I rooted my phone. Thanks.
Samsung is pretty good about honoring warranties but I highly doubt they will honor your warranty if they see that your phone has been rooted. You should probably call Samsung and talk to them and see if they will still look at your phone and possibly fix it with it being previously rooted. There's still a good chance they will as long as your phone is put back to factory software. You just need to call Samsung first so you don't waste time. If Samsung tells you no then you're only left with replacing the digitizer yourself or at a third party repair center or getting an insurance replacement. Sorry for your bad luck.
What exactly is going on with your capacitive back button? It's possible that Samsung will go ahead and fix it because it is a hardware failure that has nothing to do with rooting your phone. Call Samsung.

Thanks for the info. I called Samsung and they told me that they will look into my back button issue even though I rooted the phone as long as it is on stock rom.

[Q] Warranty reset, possible?

Hi all,
I've had a bit of experience in rooting and flashing, back on my old Nexus 4. Haven't done it in awhile due to my Nexus 5 stock being bloody perfect in my opinion.
I'm going to get a Samsung Galaxy Tab S 10.5, and I've heard about all the bloatware. Obviously I would like to remove this crap if possible, but I was wondering about warranty issues. Is it now possible to restore the tablet back to a state that the warranty provider will not be able to tell it's been rooted/flashed (and voided warranty)?
Cheers.
Nope. Once knox has been tripped, you cant get back warrenty. There isnt even a root method that doesnt void knox either. What I do is wait like month or two before rooting to see if there are any faulty parts. Then i root and void warrenty.

I just got my tablet back from Samsung. My screen stopped working so I went back to the store and they sent it back to Samsung.
I was a little bit freaking out, because it was rooted and then some. (had scratches on the side/cover, I've taken the cover of it once)
Now, 2 weeks later, I just retrieved it.
Tablet is fixed/replaced. Warranty was NOT voided.
And it looks like they really fixed it instead of just refurbishing/replacing. They replaced the hardware (broken mainboard, usbport, cables), de-rooted it and patched it up back to normal factory state.
I even got the stock recovery mode from Samsung on it, which they used to patch it up.
And the bootloader says KNOX WARRANTY VOID: 0.
I've looked in to this and found that Samsung is 'okay' with you rooting your device. Your warranty does NOT get voided if you root it!
If it breaks down due to software or hardware failure that is not of your own doing (i.e. not having it dropped/submerged, you get the point), Samsung will cover the first 'repair' you sent in.
Atleast here, in the Netherlands.
Just thought you guys should know this, as everybody is 'tripping their knox' and worrying about warranty.
In the EU there is a law saying that you are allowed to jailbreak electronics you own without losing warranty. So unless it is brokenot because of negligence including bricking,, they should fix it.

It has to do something with Samsung. Depends on each thing that happens to your tablet. I think they only fix it once when Knox is tripped.
Europe has stronger consumer protection laws. I would not count on it in the U.S.
Yeah as I said, in the UK/EU yes. No idea about elsewhere. It is nothing to do with one fix if tripped its to do with consumer law.
