Help requested with ringtone problem - Xperia Z1 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have a stock, unrooted Z1 Compact, D5503 running Android 5.1.1, build 14.6.A.0.368.
Ever since the latest update, at random times, it sets the ring volume to zero and doesn't allow me to change it.
When I press and hold volume up, the slider pops up, but the indicator for volume doesn't move from the lowest position.
When I press and hold volume down, the phone changes from ring to vibrate, but no other change. Ring volume stays at zero. When I try Settings, Sound & Notification, media volume and alarm volume work as normal, but I can't adjust ring volume from zero.
The only fix I have found that works is to turn the phone off and on. The problem goes away, until some random trigger starts it again.
It's extremely annoying, and I have missed important calls because my phone won't ring.
I've sent an email to Xperia Care, maybe they can fix it, but I thought I'd try here because I've seen so many problems fixed through this forum. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I know you said your phone is stock, but this is the kind of thing I've had happen after a bad flash. Maybe something hiccupped during your update. I would try backing up apps and settings through Google options, then factory reset, or reflash with PC Companion.

Thanks Levone, I've already tried factory reset, it seemed to work for a while, now it's done it again. I'll try re-running the update through PC companion as you suggest. I have disabled a LOT of Sony bloatware, maybe something in there is the cause, I'll look through my disabled apps. I'd love to root the phone as it's out of warranty, but there doesn't seem to be a trustworthy method yet for my version. I'm sure someone will find one soon. I'm seriously sick of disabling about 20 apps every single time there's an OTA update. The last update seems to be full of bugs, SMS is slow, there are a lot of MMS's I haven't received, and now this problem with ringer volume. I often wonder why updates are released that actually make the phone slower, more bloated and buggier. I expect better from Sony.

I'm with you. I typically have always disabled or deleted bloatware also, (or used custom ROM), but I've also ran into problems before. Currently, I'm using stock .368, flashed via Flashtool, rooted, deodex patched, Xposed, etc., and everything has been fine so far. This time, I just left all the apps there, and just never opened them. Turned off any auto update, and just ignore update notifications from Play Store. It seems to be working out better. Software these days seems so complicated that you can hardly touch anything without affecting something else.

turn on -----restart ---after turn off and restart

After googling, it seems that the ringtone dying is a common thing, related to the latest update. After Sony tell us that updates are necessary for speed, smoothness and security. Well my phone's pretty freaking secure if I don't know when it's ringing. There are other murmurs about videos not playing and battery life reduction.
I tried re-installing the update via PC companion, nothing changed, other than I had to kill a googleplex of bloatware again and re-install everything else from a backup. I'm seriously considering rooting this $600 pain of a phone, and loading a custom ROM. And my next phone will likely be an HTC. I've owned a Samsung Galaxy S3, and I never want to repeat the Samsung phone experience... and my daughter has an iPhone 5C, she's on her fourth replacement under warranty. I'd rather own a Samsung before anything Apple.
I've just read that removing the SIM card may fix the problem, I'll see. Back later.

btw "I've already tried factory reset, it seemed to work for a while, now it's done it again" might indicate that you might be disabling an app or installing any app that might be conflicting with your phone. flash the latest firmware once it boots don't make any changes and just see if the problem persists .

Have you someting like this in yor settings?

Same phone, same problem.
I have the same phone and the same problem.
Haven't found any obvious trigger that causes this, and as with you, a restart seems to cure it for a while.
I have a Garmin vivosmart tracker which vibrates, so have generally noticed this problem when my wrist starts shaking and I notice there is an incoming call but no ringer!
Currently trialing:
"android.stackexchange.com/questions/97678/ringing-volume-is-reduced-after-after-updating-moto-g2-to-android-lollipop"
"talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Xperia-Z2/Problem-with-ring-volume-z2-after-update/td-p/1023521"
Will let you know if either work.

Thanks everyone for your help. The problem seems to have gone away, but I can't say why.
Now I have a bigger problem, the power switch is failing. It doesn't work any more unless I press it fairly hard, and then it bounces, which means the phone flickers between blank and lock screen. And it's VERY difficult to press and hold the button to pop up the restart/shutdown menu. Starting the phone is easy enough, I just press the shutter button then home when the camera app comes up. Shutting it down, not so easy. I've seen the youtube videos on teardown, and being an electronics tech all my working life I could probably do it. Not sure of the point; the cover over the micro USB slot pops open randomly (this is my second replacement cover) and video with MX player pro locks up when seeking, requiring a hard reset. I assume the software problems will be fixed eventually, but I've decided to upgrade to a Z3 compact. Hopefully it will be tougher. And I've ordered a magnetic charging dock and tempered glass screen protectors and a decent protective cover, so hopefully it won't get too damaged. So I guess I'll see you on the Z3 compact forums soon. And I'll check out Android 6 sometime, but it's not playing nice on my Nexus 7 2013 tablet yet; but I guess the apps I use will be sorted out eventually. I'll admit I love the sound quality of apt-x through my Sennheiser MM-400X headphones. But the FLAC files take up lots of space - and yes it's worth using lossless audio compression though apt-x with good headphones. Sorry I'm rambling. See you round.
Regds, PW

Further to this; I have upgraded to a Z3 compact. Love it to death. But the volume locking off problem is STILL there. It turns out it's an app, Camera Zoom FX. If I turn off the shutter sound on Zoom FX, it locks the ringtone volume to zero, and nothing but a restart will bring it back. So I either don't use Camera Zoom FX at all, or don't turn off the shutter sound. Simple.

Problem Solved for me
Hello, I had the same problem on my Sony Xperia Z1 and I figured it out thanks to Zorricko44 on talk.sonymobile.com

Re: Ringtone volume locked at 0
Solution:
This is caused by headphones screwing up volume.
1) Connect headphones (mine was blu-tooth)
2) Play Music
3) Adjust music volume (you will see the slider pop up) Hit the "BELL" symbol - now you can adjust your ringtone volume.
4) Switch back to music volume.. and don't ever change the ringtone volume while listening to music ever again!!!
You might be able to just plug in headphones and adjust it right away, but this worked for me. "

I think my Nexus is broken :(

So I'm having an issue w/ my Galaxy Nexus..
Brand new, couple weeks old
Playing Music, phone starts going to a loop, phone hard locks.... Screen goes fuzzy grey
Several times I've come back to my phone and it got stuck in sleep mode. Can't wake it - had to pull battery.
Once in the middle of browsing the web on HSPDA, the phone just froze and I had to pull the battery
Ideas?

Are you rooted?
Have you tried a factory reset?

Might be a defective phone, return and get a replacement ASAP. This isn't normal.
Phone is not rooted, have not tried a factory reset
My phone also hard licked when listening to music. It only happens when u try changing the "Sound Effects" settings in the a stock player though

My browser froze on me once and I've had to do two battery pulls due to being unable to wake it from sleep mode. The issues were weeks apart though. My first Nexus S had bad issues with freezing and I immediately replaced it but this phone isn't showing any symptoms as bad as that was. I'm on stick 4.0.2 with unlocked bootloader, no root.

I had changed sound effects turned on at one point but didn't like it so I disabled them.
When the hardlock occured in the music player, I was not using sound effects.

I do use my phone a lot. All day at work (10 hours a day) I have my phone in front of me, on my desk doing various things like opening web browser, playing music, etc... I can admit that out of the times I use this phone is its relatively uncommon and may be a problem with ICS/Software since this seems to be a common thing.
The Music player does hang or crash - there's a thread about it on here. Its been confirmed it only happens when the sound effects are on tho.
The phone does sometimes go into a sleep of death, and only a battery pull fixes it.
Some website do crash the browser and it reboots.
Various combinations of use do crash the phone corrupting the display, and the only way to restart is to pull the battery.
Having said all that, it sounds like you might have another issue. If its easy to get it replaced, then get it replaced. You might have a defective main board or something. If not, try a factory wipe without installing anything just as a sanity check.

Based on what you said - I think I'm just experiencing common issues.. What makes you think the phone may be actually defective?
I'm kind of pressing this because what I do not want to happen is spend days without my phone to get a new one only to find it has the same issue or is not brand-new (and inadvertently gives me a ****ty phone)
How is Samsung about RMAs? Any cross-shipping options anyone knows about? I can't check right now, but Im going to give them a call and check their site later tonight from home.
Honestly I had massive reboots and freezes happen on me to but then it turned out I had some apps on my phone that were not compatible with ics yet and I just uninstall them and no more crashes.
This phone has some bugs its early days. I don't think you will have much luck with Samsung its not apple
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I've owned the phone day one and no reboots. I listen to music often and no crashes. I didn't tinker with anything though. I heard the music settings cause reboots.
Try a factory reset and not screwing with it.
The music app may have a bug with ICS. Not a big deal. Doubt the phone is defective as it sounds like a software bug. Try using another music player as a test, but I like the lock screen music controls of stock.
Galaxy Nexus - 4.0.3 CM9
Asus Transformer - 3.2 Revolver
Well since making this post the phone has not hard locked in the music player
While using the Facebook for Android App though, it suddenly rebooted while poking around...
This is kind of weird. Its not being very consistent lol
I've been monitoring the phones boot patterns and I found something that makes this phone reboot consistently
I will have Google music streaming over 3G/H...I open a program/app called "Trapster" (if you dont know what this is.. its basically a Map with an overlay of known hiding spots for speed cameras/cops)
if i have those 2 apps open the phone reboots within a minute or two - i think its heat related as the screen is ridiculously hot
Musi player bug
My phone also crashed when listening to music, but only happens when I try changing the "Sound Effects" settings in the a stock player. Tried EStrong player and no problems at all (however, there's no settings). And on my Sensation (with ICS on it - XE ROM) it will CF after 10 sec of playing...
Interesting...
Seen this twice now... Totally stock, not even rooted. Was typing a text message. Froze up and then screen slowly started to morph into this funky image. Battery pulled, rebooted and all is good again. I've barely ever touched the music player so far.

You must have been ready with a camera because I see that for 5-10 seconds before my screen just turns off... that exact "look" or image is what I see on my screen as the phone crashes/locks up.... if you leave it long enough it goes to solid white then blanks out after 30 seconds or so.... and the phone remains dark until I pull the battery.
Since my last post though, 6 days ago... I've been vigorously using the Music player along with other items trying to induce crashing and it hasn't happened. It is definitely inconsistent but I have been changing settings around. I made it so the music app doesn't stream data now(use offline songs only) and it seems to have 100% stopped it from crashing so it seems... And I mean I have music running all day at work (12 hour days) and I have it running in the car with navigation... no crashes for almost a week
I've been thinking about rooting it since I really thing what I'm experiencing is a software issue. It seems regularly rebooting my nexus has stopped all the issues I'm having.
Just to update this thread
I never replaced my phone. Heeding the advice of many saying it was a bug, I ended up rooting my phone and flashing several different ROMs. Since my last post and first ROM flashed, I have not had a single crash/lock/reset or even so much as to an unexpected reboot. Phone has zero problems after getting off the stock ROM.

(Mine is black)
The day I got my Sony LiveView, I had one problem: The screen wasn't working.
But this was only 2 months ago, so I got a discount coupon from the store and bought the SmartWatch as it just arrived in store.
1. FIRST IMPRESSION
As usual, the design caught my eye, it looked even nicer then the pictures google image gave me.
As every geeky person would do is to try turning it on but that didn't quite happen as I thought it would, you had to charge it 2 hours before you can start playing it. That of course you had to find out yourself as the paper guide told you nothing about waiting.
Charging it is taking the device of the wristband, opening the clip and placing the L shaped cable between the clip and... god this is hard to explain.
It's like clipping it to your belt, but the belt is the cable. There!
2. APPS
Anyways, Once I installed the necessarily software to connect the phone, the first thing you notice is that you get a menu with all Sony apps designed for the SmartWatch. Quite handy as you don't need to start searching for them on the app store. It even has a predefined shortcut to search for apps with "SmartWatch" so you don't have to start typing it (Yey for the 2.3Seconds win!)
Installing an app is as easy as agreeing with the terms and downloading it. Once installed, the app is active on your mobile AND watch.
You can select any installed app such as Twitter or Facebook, even Find Phone tool (VERY handy for girls and there maze purses between tampax and rocks...) with various settings. Some apps can be defined as gadget on your home screen.
Some apps are being created by cool nerds to enhance the flexibility of your watch. One of my favorite is the VFinder, an app who can take pictures with your phone camera, you see the camera on your watch with around 1-2FPS. (Yes you that lives next door a pretty girl, no more peaking, use your phone and watch!) Or the GPS tool, see how fast your driving, how high your climbing and where the hell on this planet your standing.
Maybe a Maps app? There are two who are being worked on, but you can test it already. They both are really bad for now, the one using google maps is the worst. But it's still in early stage... right?
3. HARDWARE
Now, to how handy this tool really is...
First of all, it reacts as it should with your finger(s), but then again, some buttons are to small.
When you double tab the watch, you have a 70% chance it will turn on.
You are also able to shake the device to wake it, but only a 10-20% chance, and not just a little shake, more like shacking a cocktail!
As alternative, you have a ON button on the side.
So, when you manage to turn on the watch, you get the digital clock, with the day (Mo, Tu,We,Th,Fr,Sa,Su) and the day of the month. You don't get to see the month and year.
Once you tab on it, you get the homescreen. On the homescreen you got the gadgets. Wiping your finger on the screen to the left and right, you get to slide between gadgets. I got mine defined on Twitter, Facebook and Events (missed calls, SMS, MMS, etc). The Gadgets are fullscreen buttons, clicking on them will give you more info. When reading your incoming SMS, you can slide up and down to read the whole thing.
Using two fingers and tabbing them both together on the screen makes you go back, I would have preferred a double tab, as sometimes you just can't tab with 2 fingers when smoking a sigaret (Or something else.)
Once back on the homescreen, you can slide down to get the menu. On the menu you find your installed apps. Sliding left and right again you get to find more of your apps.
I happen to have noticed, some apps freeze the watch (Or phone, still sorting it out) till you reboot the watch or force close the app on your phone. Restarting the app will make it work again.
Quite disappointing tbh.
Now about the device main app. It's missing some things we could all use...
For instance, I'd love to change the Screen Timeout time to 10 seconds, as for now it turns off to fast.
Having a function to turn off or dim vibrate would be amazing so i don't have to take off my watch when sleeping.
Changing the screen brightness would be handy for certain things.
Having an option to add a background, change UI colors and styles would be amazing to have, as it's your special watch, you want it to be yours only.
PROS & CONS
Pro's
Design
Multi-touch screen
Size
Respounds Time
Very cool apps
Con's
Can't see screen well in sun
Music Player volume buttons to small to touch on screen
Menu should be fullscreen menu buttons like Live View (It's to small to work with when driving/biking)
Some apps could use more options
Sometimes screen doesn't show image, but still reacts to touching
Should have WAY more settings. (eg. Screen Timeout, Customizations, Vibration strenght, Brightness, etc)
Shaking it to wake up works 1 out of 10 times only

First-time-use-charging is pain in the ass. I connected it to the charging cable, but wasn't sure if it's charging or not... no LED light, no response from watch... nothing. In begining I thought I recevied defective one, that is not charging. Also using custom (too) short USB cable instead of micro USB cable is simply dumb. I think charging is the main failure of this watch.
Watch battery indicator is also not use accurate. It was showing about 50%, but next hour it shut itself down.
Apps are not to good, but they are getting better and better. Unfortunately Facebook and Twitter apps are realy bad. Almost just plain text with no forming. Mail notifications are currently bad.
Weather app is very good, but it needs option for current location not just predefined location.
Find phone, Messaging, Missed call, ModeChanger, TicTacToe, StatusView, Counter, GPS Viewer, GPS Map, Slideshow and Battery Level apps are useful and good working!
Music player needs bigger buttons!
I would prefer bigger screen, but i got big hands, so this is not for everybody. Also pixel densiti and screen brightnes is too low.
Also it would be cool it it would have mic and speaker, so I could answer phone calls from the watch.
And one more tip: the easiest way to check your watch is double tap on the alu ring/band. It apparently uses accelerometer to wake up.

I had that very same impression at first. I will quote this in my review, as the same thing happened to me. The battery was showing 50% if not more and suddenly, I could not revive the thing. I used it for 1 day and a half and it died already :/
Abou the dubble tabbing, you would need a hammer, as I had to almost hit it
LED and Micro-USB would have been handy. Now I have to order a new cable in case the watch dies while driving/working... Worst case scenario, lose the cable...

Nope, no hammer in use!
You just have to get used to it. It works surprisingly good!
One downside is also that it actually is no watch, it's a clip. It is unnecessary bulky because of the clip. 12,5 mm instead of 8,5 mm. So I can easily imagine a scenario where i break the clip by getting cought somewhere since it does not lock in closed position. This would cause the "watch" to be unuseable since you can't charge it properly nor wear it as a watch anymore.
It also not a real watch because it does not show the time without interaction.
I want my MBW-150 back
Nevertheless it has some awesome apps like the camera tool and GPS map "Google Maps for Smartwatch" finally works like a charm.
the sony smartwatch is Waterproof ?, You can splash in the water or surmeger?
It's just dust and splash proof. So... it's not waterproof. No submerging!
Just a little heads up.
Mine stopped working yesterday. It stopped reacting till I placed it back in it's charger.
So, what I now get is a fully charged SmartWatch MN2, who only works when you place it in it's charging cable.
Once every (around) 30 seconds it reboots on it self, then searches for your phone.
Your phone says it's still connected, so the SmartWatch keeps searching till you reset your phone's Bluetooth device list.
Once reconnected, you need to be lucky to be able to use it at least 15 more seconds before it reboots and searches infinitely again.

So, what I now get is a fully charged LiveView MN2, who only works when you place it in it's charging cable.
Once every (around) 30 seconds it reboots on it self, then searches for your phone.
Your phone says it's still connected, so the LiveView keeps searching till you reset your phone's Bluetooth device list.
Once reconnected, you need to be lucky to be able to use it at least 15 more seconds before it reboots and searches infinitely again.
MOD EDIT: Inappropriate language deleted.

This is EXACTLY what has now happened to mine! Got to send it to a Sony Repair place now.
It's a little frustrating
I like my Smartwatch so far. I've had it a couple weeks. Music control works great with DoubleTwist & the FindMyPhone app is great (if you're in bluetooth range). The Endomondo app is nice too as I keep my phone strapped to my arm while running.
My main complaint is the actual app buttons. 9 times out of 10, when I tap the icon to launch the app, it thinks I'm swiping and goes back to another screen. So frustrating. Better firmware with slightly larger buttons or something better come quick. I almost chucked the thing across the room. Luckily, the strap was too tight & I had calmed down by the time it came off.
Ok i am so confused .. I wanna ask what is main difference between Liveview and LiveView2(Sony Smartwatch)
I am planing to buy one so which one should i go for and why .. !!!??

Bugs so far in S6 Edge+

Its been more than 2 weeks since I have this S6 Edge+ and so far, I love the design and software. There is no lag so far, no matter which application/game I threw at it... However, from time to time, I have encountered quite a few bugs in the device which I would mention below. It would be helpful if somebody else too confirms that they have witnessed these. Actually all of them went away with a normal restart, so I have my doubts if any of you have noticed any so far...
So, here's the list:-
1. First time when I connected my phone via USB to my PC, I selected MTP (The option appears when you connect the USB cable to a PC) and I was unable to browse through any of the files. That was weird because once I selected Camera (PTP), I was able to see all the files. I tried again with MTP and it was same, so I just continued with PTP instead to copy the files I needed to.
After that day, I didn't connect my USB until today and it worked just fine today (I was able to see files through MTP). Although I have restarted my phone several times between then and now, so not sure what fixed it or broke it in the first place.
2. A couple of days back (probably last Friday), I was watching a video on facebook browser and I turned the phone to landscape mode. However, the video or the browser didn't turn. I thought it could be due to any facebook app issue, so I switched to normal browser (Open in Chrome option) and yet again the browser won't tilt. I closed it and opened the official YouTube app and tried a video and strangely that didn't work either. At this point, I was mad. I tried all other apps, nothing was working. I did try turning Auto-Tilt on/off several times during this but nothing worked. I just restarted my phone as a last resort and it started working just fine. Didn't have any issue till date.
3. I use CloudMagic app for my corporate email. Yesterday when I received a mail, I just got a notification on lock screen. I swiped it away. Later, when I unlocked the phone, I saw that there was still a notification from the app. When I dragged down the notification bar, I saw that there is a blank space left for the notification and the other notifications are displayed after that blank space. And no matter what I did or try, the notification simply wouldn't go away. I even selected CloudMagic from Application Manager and selected Force Stop which should have practically stopped everything related to that app but the notification still didn't go. So, I'm assuming this is not application issue, this could be some notification manager issue with S6E+. Here's a screen cap from that day:-

4. This one happened today and it was quite irritating too. I went to Developer Options -> Animator duration scale -> Animation scale 10x. After this, you would realize that all the animations would become very slow. You can try tapping on Recent button and see all the recent apps open up at slo-mo. I did that to beat the Android Lollipop Easter Egg game. After that, when I changed it back to 0.5x or 1x, the Animation rate wouldn't change. I tried doing it couple of times. Tried turning off Developer Options and turning back on but it didn't work. The animations were so slow for every application till I restarted the phone. After restart though, it worked fine.
5. Well, this one isn't a bug I'm sure but this isn't curable using a restart. The screen of the Edge+ is highly sensitive, so even if I tap to touch, sometimes it just registers the touch as touch n hold and hence the tap action isn't performed. This is visible in games like "Clash of Clans" where I would have to click multiple times on Resource Generators (Gold Mine & Elixir Mine) to take out the generated deposit when the zoom level is at minimum. I've seen another post from a user who reported the same issue. Game just happened to be one of the examples to witness this issue.
I'm not really annoyed with any of the above bugs and given the chance, I would still buy the S6 Edge+. I can even live with all the above bugs (if they are bugs at all), as long as they're fixed with a restart.
Just want to know if you guys had any of such issues yet ? or may be noticed some other bug in the system yet ?
Hi.
I've been using the Edge Plus for about 5 days and the only bug that happened to me was the blank notification, I solved it myself by restarting the phone, it is important to mention that this only happened once.

I know, it happened only once for me too. However, its been just 2 weeks since the phone has released, which isn't a very long time to see this issue repeating. Let's hope it doesn't.
I have the phone for 2½ weeks now and what I have noticed is that sometimes it will not awake from deep sleep so screen will remain blank even though I have pressed the home button and then action will be initiated after sometime.. Don't know why but sometimes just happens, maybe once a day during last week.. All apps I have installed are the ones I always using and none of them is like non trusted etc

I'm having a really annoying "bug" or im doing something wrong, my apps are ordered by "alphabetic" but if i uninstall an app the app's on the second page for example don't "move" to the free slot, i have to go and order to re-order everything again....

Love mine! But I have two things. Every now and then when I turn the screen on the phone freezes for like 7 seconds or so. It doesn't bother me that much since it only happens once every other day.
The second thing is that when I connect my phone to via Bluetooth to my cars audios yster to listen to music. Everything is studdering and lagging so bad I can't listen to it. Then I need to disconnect and reconnect a few times and if I'm lucky it will work. Today though I connected (and it was bad) but then I used the smart cleaning app on the phone and after that it worked fine for the rest of my trip. Might be some cache from some app that's causing this. I'm going to try to use the smart cleaning app a few days in a row now when I'm connecting the phone to see if that helps, I hope so.

Yeah. I did a factory reset yesterday (first one for me on this phone) and now there is no issue at all when it comes to connecting to my car. Haven't experienced any freezes as well but that's to early to say I guess.

Good to hear that. However, we can't just depend on Factory Reset every time something like this shows up...
Device G9287 . Lock your screen with pattern and then double press the camera button and open it.You will see blue line scanning your phone and the phone becomes unresponsive.Press back button and click home button thrice and then phone becomes responsive and you can draw the pattern and it will accept it.
Just got that bug some one said about the when the phone is locked and you touch it, the screen just stays black
The 'night clock' seems to take a hell of a lot of battery.
I woke up the other night after having it on from 11pm-7am with nearly 40% drain with 'android system' being kept awake for 12 hours - Can only assume it was the clock that's doing this.
I cleared the cache, no better, factory reset - Bit better, but still seeing a 20% drain over night with almost no apps installed since I got it (I like to make sure everything's working as expected before installing everything).

Note 4 Suddenly Having a Multitude of problems. Hardware Issue?

Hello, I have had my Note 4 for quite some time now and have not had any issues with it up until the last month or so.
At first it started out as just a hiccup every now and then, an example would be when I play music via bluetooth to my Jeep CD Player, I would sometimes have to turn bluetooth off then back on to get it to connect or reconnect.
Now things are getting out of hand. Here is a list of problems I have on a daily/hourly basis and seemingly at random times. I cannot reproduce any of these problems (except the NFC problem) on demand.
I have noticed that rebooting the phone will clear up these issues (except NFC) for a short time, SOMETIMES. Other times a reboot does nothing to help the situation.
Keyboard Lag
Sometimes when I press the keys the phone vibrates indicating a key press and magnifies the key that is being pressed, but fails to enter anything in the text box/input field. For the record I am using Swiftkey. I have noticed that this happens most often when I open an app via "popup notification." For example, if I were to receive an IM or SMS I would tap on the notification that pops up, which then switches to/opens the corresponding app. It is then I will more often than not have this issue. To remedy this I have to close and re-open the app, sometimes several times causing the keyboard to open and close, several times... Sometimes when I TAP a key, the phone will behave as though I have held the key down or performed a "long press." This issue is not exclusive to the keyboard, it often happens anywhere on the screen and with any app, usually indicating that I have been "long pressing" for about 1-2sec at a time.
NFC Does Not Work
One day while I was at work I attempted to add the office printer via NFC. To my surprise I was unable to turn on NFC via the "quick settings" drawer. In the quick settings panel the NFC icon would light up, as if it were turning on, and then just turn right back off again, this happens consistently. I went into setting to enable NFC that way and I am stuck with a slider that is actually in the "on" position but greyed out, I am unable to interact with it.
Bluetooth Connectivity
I have a JVC CD player in my Jeep, I often use YouTube or Google Play Music when I drive. Usually I do not have any problems connecting to the CD player at first, but after about 30-60sec of playback the audio goes blank. The app says that it is still playing however no audio can be heard. Then it will suddenly come back on after about 5-10sec, and here is where it gets strange. After the audio comes back on after this "hiccup" the playback is fast, as in it is playing at 2X's it's normal speed, makes the vocals sound like chipmunks. This will continue indefinitely until I turn on the screen, unlock the phone, then shut the screen off. Then the audio goes on playing fine. This happens with both YouTube and Play Music, while using YouTube the video gets sped up as well. I also experience issues with connectivity where sometimes at random the phone will just disconnect from the CD player, and refuse to reconnect until I have rebooted the phone, or if it does reconnect I get no audio until the phone is rebooted. I notice that this ONLY happens when connected via bluetooth. If I turn bluetooth off while this is happening music will play over the phone's speaker perfectly normal. My CD player has a hands free feature, and I do not seem to have any issues with phone calls, it's only with music playback do I have problems.
Originally I thought it was my CD player acting up, however in light of the other problems, and the fact that I tested it with my tablet and two of my friend's phones without issue, I don't think the CD player is the problem.
Sluggish/Glitchy UI
Sometimes when the phone really freaks out, the UI behaves very strangely. Sometimes notification Icons will hover above the running app, other times the whole screen will lock in place for a few seconds. Sometimes if the screen is locked up, I will shut it off, then turn it on, shut it off, turn it on. However as I press the power button to turn the screen on and off, nothing is happening, the screen just stays black while the "back" and "recent apps" buttons light up at the bottom. Then when the screen does finally come back in it will flash on and off quickly in accordance with how many times I pressed the power button. While all this is happening, if I hold the power button to turn the phone off, the power/reboot menu will appear without incident. Sometimes when I am swiping to unlock the phone, it does not register the full swipe. Basically it acts/appears as though I lightly touched the screen and moved my finger a half inch even though I have drug my finger all the way across the screen. To remedy that issue I have to SLOWLY drag my finger across the screen and then it unlocks without incident. I have also noticed that when I go to "swipe away" a notification, especially one that has "information" in it, it will swipe off the information but leave the notification there and display the app name the notification was from. An example would be, if I just installed an app (for example YouTube) from the Play Store, the notification will say "YouTube has been successfully installed." When I swipe either left or right to remove that notification, a "white ghost box" or "overlaying top layer" with the "successfully installed" text in it will slide away. However it leaves behind a green box/notification that says "Google Play Store" and that remains until I shut the screen off and turn it back on.
NFC Will Not Turn On
I simply cannot get NFC to turn on, the slider is in the ON position but is greyed out as I mentioned earlier. I would post a picture but I guess there is a 10post rule before I can do that. I have given up on NFC, mostly because I rarely use it, so it's really not that big of a deal.
Initializing the Camera
I use an app called "Telegram" instead of SMS messaging, thus I use Telegram to share pictures with friends. Sometimes, again I am not able to reproduce this problem on demand, the problem comes and goes seemingly at random. The camera will take more than 30-60sec to initialize, while I am waiting for it I am stuck with a black screen. If the camera doesn't initialize, shutting the screen on then off will take me back to the telegram app. I never get an error message or anything. Other times when I try to use the camera it pops on instantly and works flawlessly. Originally I thought this was a problem specific to telegram, however in the name of science I tested it with the default camera app and get the same results.
USB File Transfers
I'm not really sure this is specific to my phone, but whenever I transfer files from my PC to the phone or from the phone to PC, it is PAINFULLY slow. It's even painfully slow when the PC just displays what is in the folder. However I can't say for sure this is related because I never attempted to transfer files until I started having these issues, at which point I thought it would be a good idea to start backing things up.
Gets Stuck in 3G Mode
This happens rarely, not even sure that it's related but I felt that it was worth mention.
What have I done to try to remedy this problem you ask?
So far I have performed a non-root ADB nandroid backup, just in case factory resetting the phone didn't work.
I have factory reset the phone 2 times, I see no improvements.
I have cleared out my SD card/removed SD card
I removed and/or shut off bloatware apps (Yes I tested the phone without removing/disabling bloatware, still having the same issues)
Wiped cache via Recovery
I am not sure what else I can really do to fix the phone, I am starting to think that this is a hardware issue. I should mention that there was no significant event that I feel would cause these malfunctions. System update installed and worked perfectly up until this last month, I have not dropped the phone from significant height, the phone has an otterbox anyway. I have not gotten the phone wet, it has not been left outside, this phone has not seen any abuse what-so-ever. I just started having these problems out of the blue and they seem to be getting progressively more frequent and longer lasting. If I don't get any ideas from here I am going to try to get Verizon to replace the phone via insurance, however I don't have high hopes for that because I have grandfathered unlimited data and this is not the "original" phone that I had when I added the insurance option, so I am not sure it's covered.
Does anyone have any ideas on what could be causing this or anything I can do to correct it or try to troubleshoot it?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Phone Information is as follows:
Samsung Galaxy Note4
Model: SM-N910V
Android Ver: 5.0.1
Baseband Ver: N910VVRU2BOG5
Build#: LRX22C.N910VVRU2BOG5
HW Ver: N910V.05
Verizon Wireless
Non-Root, Default Launcher, Not modified in any way.
I realize that this is a long post but whenever I ask for help I like to be detailed. If I left out any information that might be helpful please let me know.
Unfortunately, it looks very much like components on your logic board are going bad. Sometimes a few specific things will go bad that don't actually make the phone unusable, but make it act similar to what you are explaining. It wouldn't be worth the money you'd have to pay someone to track down the bad components and replace them. If you really like the note 4, I would just make a full backup with kies while you can, buy a new phone and restore your backup.
All of Kies backups do NOT restore to a new phone! Only contacts, messages and call logs will restore on a new phone. Use Samsung Smart Switch or Helium. Good luck

I see. I didn't know that because I've always restored my backups to the same phone. Thanks for the info.

Several sound issues, I believe they are related. Welp!

Some info: Pixel XL, one-year-old, rooted with Magisk, android up-to-date version 9, Build number PPR2.181005.003
Some weeks ago I started to see some weird behaviour related to sound. First, while listening to Spotify and Google Podcasts (from now on called "The Apps"), the phone would simply stop producing any sound through the headphone (or speakers when the headphones are then unplugged). A restart would fix it until the next random time it would happen again.
After a while, I've decided to factory reset the phone and reinstall the Android system from scratch and root it again (I've been doing this kind of stuff for years now, so I'm pretty knowledgeable about these procedures), to no avail. The problem was still there.
I've started to try to pinpoint what the main problem would be, and then I've started debugging other stuff. What I've found is:
- If I restart the phone and immediately try to play Spotify or Google Podcasts, it will not work and only a restart will fix it.
- If I restart the phone and wait a few minutes (around 5 minutes) everything works, until the next random failure.
- After a restart, my widgets on the home screen will take a few minutes to load (Google Calendar and The Weather Network)-- if I try The Apps before that, no sound will come out through the headphones (or speakers if I disconnect the headphones)
- Sometimes the sound will come out through the phone's speakers, even if the headphones are connected. Only a restart will fix this.
- Sometimes a loud cracking sound will come through the headphones and after that, no sound is played whatsoever by the phone -- a restart fixes this.
- Both The Apps would randomly stop playing (as if the pause button is pressed). Pressing the Play button again restores the sound, but with different volume level. If it was lower, it will become louder, and vice versa. I didn't test this without the headphones as I would need to isolate myself from the world LOL.
- No sound is produced during phone calls either. A restart fixes this until the next random failure.
- The volume indicator will randomly lag to display after pressing the volume buttons.
- The volume indicator will appear randomly and change small amounts (up or down) while I'm using the phone.
I am slowly removing less-used apps to try to pinpoint which one could be the offending factor, with no luck so far.
I've unrooted my phone today to try and see if this has any effect on those problems (no effect).
Any ideas what I can try next? Any idea what can cause these problems?

I'm sure you have already looked into this - but just in case....make sure that the "Apps" are NOT set to Optimize Battery nor to Restrict Background Usage. There was another thread recently about a user having Spotify stop playing randomly for them and the issue was the app was set to Restrict Background Activity. Good luck!

Thanks for the confidence you projected on me LOL, I had NOT looked at it! Indeed, both apps are set to "optimize battery". I'll change this setting and give it a go.
Thanks!

I must say a LOT of the related problems are, if not completely, at least partially solved. I've seen way less problems since I disabled the battery optimization for Spotify and Google Podcasts.
Thank you so much!
I'll keep tracking them and running some more tests just to be sure, but it seems this was the main issue here.
