LED Notification Light - Nexus 5X Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Really hoping they kept it on the 5X. And yes, it will cause me to cancel my pre-order if there isn't one. Was never happy with Ambient Display.

From what people are saying, it does not have an LED notification light. It only has ambient display.

Well. That seals it. Ambient Display notifications are terrible. Looks like I will be looking elsewhere.

Good luck...

Seems like the 6p only has a notification led, wonder how ambient display is going to work on a non-amoled display battery wise.

Been confirmed... The 5x Also has a notification LED

You'll have the choice to set either ambient display or the led in settings.

I can see LG poking holes into the 5x as we speak

Not sure when it was fixed but the N5x spec on the Google site has LED notification light added as the last bullet point now.

It just slipped from the published spec list according to Nexus team (see Reddit AMA), the LED was and is there

You can now see that the Nexus 5X specs. on the Play Store shows the notification light.

but you need a third part app or not?

Not to use it in its stock form. However you would use a 3rd party app to have more control over its behavior and colors I'm sure. Just like the N5

[Q] Screen Banding and Notification LED ##With solution to notification issue##

I got my Galaxy Nexus yesterday and I love it. There's just a couple of things bugging me and wanted to see if anyone else was having the same problems and of course if anyone knew of any solutions.
1- Screen. The resolution is fantastic but i've noticed some banding in flat colours. It's most noticeable in light and mid greys. There is a strip that runs up the middle of the screen that is noticeably lighter that the rest of the display. This goes away on high screen brightness but is really quite hard to ignore at other times.
2- Notification LED. Why is there no native support for customising this in ICS!? Either I've missed it or Google have missed a trick. I got it working with an app from the market but it only worked while the apple was running in the background, if I dismissed the apple from the new task switcher... No more custom notification lights.
Anybody else having these issues?

Notications solution.

To get the most out of your multicoloured LED you can use the Lightflow app which is available free from the market, to get this working properly on the Galaxy Nexus enable "Run in Foreground" in the general settings menu.
Thanks to jabok for spotting this setting.

Sorry to bump but I'd really like the opinion of a few other Galaxy Nexus owners, especially about the screen.
I love this phone but I am considering taking it back because of the banding on the screen, it's not noticeable until there is a flat grey in an app and then it's quite visible as a lighter band up the centre of the screen.
Is this a fault or is it to be expected on sAMOLED screens? I've only had LCD before.
Does it look anything like this or something different? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320942
Either way there are issues with SAMOLED+ screens, there are people with the Galaxy S II and Droid Razr with screen issues too.
as far as I know, it is a common trait with Super AMOLED screens - had the same issue with my Nexus S, and with my friend's phones that have Super AMOLED screens.
The banding disappears if you have the screen at a higher brightness, so it does seem to be an issue inherent with changing the brightness/colour temp of the screen.
Also, AMOLED screens are susceptible to screen burn, which is why if you leave the screen on some white text on a black background, if you then switch to a screen with mostly grey elements you'll see a ghosted image of that text.

Seeing similar on my screen but it's not really noticeable unless the phone is on auto brightness or the lowest manual setting.
From reading other threads, sounds like the GSII has a similar problem. Looks like some people have been through a few phones before getting a "band free" unit.
You could try taking it back to a (willing) store for a swap - given the current stock levels you may have a few issues though and you may not get a unit without the banding anyway.
In terms of notification LED, wait a bit for some better third party apps to arrive. Not many (existing) phones use RGB coloured LED's or similar for notifications (Nexus One and Galaxy Nexus are the only two that quickly spring to mind) so it's possible Google didn't add support because of the limited use. ICS is in it's infancy and there's a lot of development to come (both from Google and third party dev's).
Thanks for your responses!
In some ways it's good to know it's a know issue, and in others it's a bit disappointing.
I've attached an image for you to look at, you think it's worth sending back?

Personally, I'd just live with it - especially given that there's no guarantee you'd get a better model if you swapped it - hell you could end up with a worse screen!
I'm not sure it would be worth the hassle to send it back. This seems to be an issue to some degree in most SAMOLED screens. You might end up with a worse phone.
I seem to recall that many phone screens have artifacts at very low brightness settings.
This is exactly the same problem as I have. On low brightness it is visible but not on normal brightness.
I did have another nexus on order that I was going to compare it with but I decided to get an N9 instead as I don't need 2 nexus phones! I figure I can go try android beam in a phone shop lol
The question about sending it back is a tricky one - it's not visible With normal brightness so how can we be sure the replacement won't have the same problem? We can't.
yep. i have a vague banding when i look very closely.
solution ? keep my eyes more than 3 inches from the screen.
I hate it when people point out things that you have to look very hard at cos you then notice them forever more
can you confirm that with normal brigthness the problem is solved on every screen?
for the LED customisation get Light Flow from the market, works great for setting different colours for all sorts of things.

i just picked a random setting to prove/disprove the brightness thing. to be honest i REALLY have to look for these bands on auto-brightness .....
just tried 50% (still too bright in my opinion) and i still cant see banding. nor about 40%.
switched back to auto (which must be only about 20%) and they are there is i get really close and squint.

I have just completed a 3hr car trip using Google navigation and noticed the banding on auto resolution with it disappearing on bright vivid colours or dark/blacks. Thinking of asking phones4u to check out others for a possible swap.
When the phone was on charge i didn't notice any status light or none flashing when a txt was received. Should there be?

definitely seen an LED flashing for notifications. surprising large LED and at the BOTTOM of the phone !

LED notifications?

I find it really surprising that they have done it once again - released a device with a full RGB LED,but without any support for it in the software by default. Pretty much like my old Nexus One, the Galaxy Nexus can only blink in white for me. Has anybody found a way to use all colours of the LED for different notifications?
Tweet deck for blinks a yellowish hue, although i did download led tester from the market to make it was working and can display all the colours i can throw at it. I don't think you can set custom colours though I am sure a rom will be baked soon with that option though.
Try Blink: https://market.android.com/details?id=imoblife.blink&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImltb2JsaWZlLmJsaW5rIl0.
This worked well on my Nexus One.
Blink does not work, but application called Light Flow works just fine.
Blink does not work unfortunately.
I've had Blue and Green notifications plus the standard white so far - would be nice to be fully customisable as standard though.

Cool. Glad you could find one that works!
I'll remember light flow for when I can get my hands on one here in the US.
when mine blinks white it looks more like a mix of colours rather than all white, like green at the bottom, abit of red in the middle and like a purple colour towards the top. is this just mine or is everyones like this?

I have noticed the same colour bleed and it has a very very slight flicker as the light pulses too.
I'm glad this isn't a fault, though I would feel better if other people who read this could just confirm their Galaxy Nexus does the same thing??
I can see the three distinct colours, yeah. It's almost like they have separate R, G and B LED's on the circuit board really close together instead of one RGB one. If you get my drift. Doesn't bother me though.

Minimum brightness

You don't want to give your significant other yet another reason to yell at you while you're reading XDA in bed. Rate this thread to express what you think of the OnePlus 3's display minimum dimness. A higher rating indicates that the display can get extremely dim, ideal for reading in very dark environments.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
The screen can go pretty dark. However for me the contrast suffers a lot when on the lowest two settings! Gaming videos on youtube get really hard to watch because everything is just dark.
The colors also shift with lower brightness. Especially the grays turn really blue. My swiftkey gray theme looks like I have a blue theme when the screen is dimmed.
Having a night mode shortcut on the notification tray, it's easy to use this device for reading in bed. Also the display will get dark enough for those kind of things.
Sent from my LG-D802 using Tapatalk
I think it not that easy to set. If you set it to minimum you barely see anything and like 1 mm on screen above minimum it's extremely bright compared to min. Personally I think the auto-adjustment feels kinda buggy, too.

Yeah, it's awful! It seems like it never does what I want it to do. It isn't bright enough in indoor environments that have adequate lighting. And in dark environments, it is extremely dim and also randomly has random fits where it goes to maximum brightness for a few seconds and then goes back extremely dim again.
I hate it, and have it turned off unfortunately. Would like to see it corrected in an OTA from OnePlus.

I like the minimum brightness, it's like having included a screen filter (that often distorts colors, but that is what all do). If you don't like this you can easily set the brightness bar at 60-70%, which won't be too bright (compared to other screens (Samsung S3))
The minimum brightness is quite bright, such that it hurts my eyes to look at my phone when just woke up even with night mode still on and minimum brightness.
Lux dash has fixed this issue for me
The display seems really good however once in a while my display dims as if adaptive brightness is on yet I have it disabled. I touch the screen and it brightens back up. My timeouts are set to several minutes.

I also feel it's too bright for me.
My temporary solution is install a app called screen filter.
Any Solution?
Has anyone got a solution for this? I received my OP3 yesterday and this adaptive brightness is a complete mess. Hows the situation with custom CM roms? Maybe is because of defective light sensors or connectors? My previous LG G3 on Android 6.0 had a flawless auto brightness control. So I think it's not a Android 6.0 bug...
Who actually makes this display?
The Mrs's LG G Flex 2 also suffers with poor black levels which is odd for an OLED.

Does anything replace the now missing LED notification light?

I've been reading as many articles about the Note 10+ and haven't seen anything regarding the removal of the LED notification light. On the S10, the front camera has that halo, but does the Note 10? Just curious because the notification light is probably one of the most useful features for me on my Note 8.
Thanks for your help.
The "halo" doesn't work as a missing notification indicator.
You can only see them on AoD when your screen is off.
Once you receive a notification edges of your screen will start glowing but only for that moment you receive a notification.
I wish they would put an LED behind the speaker like HTC did with their One M7 back in the day.

Small RGB array off axis with a folded light pipe would work. It could make the entire slit light up bright enough that you'd see it bounce off the ceiling at night!

Get LED back cover...:cyclops:
Or a smart watch...
Had an htc one. That led was useless. So small youncouldnt see it unless it was in a very dark room.
Im not sure what the note 10 will have.
But betting it will probably be done via the screen like the s10
The LED was bright but it had to be viewed head on. It had no viewing angle. It could be made to to work but probably never will be because it will increase the cost by a dollar or two. And with millions of phones that is expensive!

Exactly to each their own, I don't use a third-party AOD with AOE I used tap to show the stock Samsung AOD.
As far as customization goes, LED Me Know gives you the option of basically a dot. AOE does that plus camera cutout, around the outer edge of the full screen, just the top and bottom, or just the sides. Different animations of the color/colors as you can choose up to three colors for each animation. LED Me does none of that.

Right, LED Me Know is simple. It saves on battery. It's literally a replacement for the missing LED. If I want flashy stuff on my AOD, I'll just turn on Edge Lighting.
Not to mention that AOE tends to be buggy, doesn't always work right, and the UI is just absolutely atrocious. It's so confusing to setup! LED Me Know is so simple and straightforward which is better for the masses.

AOE has been updated many times, including the UI. Once you understand it and set it up correctly it works perfect every time. Yes it is a little daunting for people that don't understand how it works.
AOE battery use at the end of the day is usually less than 1%.
The issue with Edge Lighting is it turns off after a few seconds so it's pointless as a LED notification unless you're basically sitting on top of your phone. Which at that point you don't really need one anyways.
That's a great thing about Android, choices. You like LED Me and I like AOE.

I think my 5g looks like the new one you got on 0 brightness (notice the green search bar in chrome in the first pic). but if i turn on night mode and brightness down, it starts looking more green. And what's weird is the more I stare at it, the more green it starts to look.
