I got my Galaxy Nexus yesterday and I love it. There's just a couple of things bugging me and wanted to see if anyone else was having the same problems and of course if anyone knew of any solutions.
1- Screen. The resolution is fantastic but i've noticed some banding in flat colours. It's most noticeable in light and mid greys. There is a strip that runs up the middle of the screen that is noticeably lighter that the rest of the display. This goes away on high screen brightness but is really quite hard to ignore at other times.
2- Notification LED. Why is there no native support for customising this in ICS!? Either I've missed it or Google have missed a trick. I got it working with an app from the market but it only worked while the apple was running in the background, if I dismissed the apple from the new task switcher... No more custom notification lights.
Anybody else having these issues?

To get the most out of your multicoloured LED you can use the Lightflow app which is available free from the market, to get this working properly on the Galaxy Nexus enable "Run in Foreground" in the general settings menu.

Sorry to bump but I'd really like the opinion of a few other Galaxy Nexus owners, especially about the screen.
I love this phone but I am considering taking it back because of the banding on the screen, it's not noticeable until there is a flat grey in an app and then it's quite visible as a lighter band up the centre of the screen.
Is this a fault or is it to be expected on sAMOLED screens? I've only had LCD before.

Either way there are issues with SAMOLED+ screens, there are people with the Galaxy S II and Droid Razr with screen issues too.
as far as I know, it is a common trait with Super AMOLED screens - had the same issue with my Nexus S, and with my friend's phones that have Super AMOLED screens.
The banding disappears if you have the screen at a higher brightness, so it does seem to be an issue inherent with changing the brightness/colour temp of the screen.
Also, AMOLED screens are susceptible to screen burn, which is why if you leave the screen on some white text on a black background, if you then switch to a screen with mostly grey elements you'll see a ghosted image of that text.

Seeing similar on my screen but it's not really noticeable unless the phone is on auto brightness or the lowest manual setting.
From reading other threads, sounds like the GSII has a similar problem. Looks like some people have been through a few phones before getting a "band free" unit.
You could try taking it back to a (willing) store for a swap - given the current stock levels you may have a few issues though and you may not get a unit without the banding anyway.
In terms of notification LED, wait a bit for some better third party apps to arrive. Not many (existing) phones use RGB coloured LED's or similar for notifications (Nexus One and Galaxy Nexus are the only two that quickly spring to mind) so it's possible Google didn't add support because of the limited use. ICS is in it's infancy and there's a lot of development to come (both from Google and third party dev's).

Personally, I'd just live with it - especially given that there's no guarantee you'd get a better model if you swapped it - hell you could end up with a worse screen!
I'm not sure it would be worth the hassle to send it back. This seems to be an issue to some degree in most SAMOLED screens. You might end up with a worse phone.
I seem to recall that many phone screens have artifacts at very low brightness settings.
This is exactly the same problem as I have. On low brightness it is visible but not on normal brightness.
I did have another nexus on order that I was going to compare it with but I decided to get an N9 instead as I don't need 2 nexus phones! I figure I can go try android beam in a phone shop lol
The question about sending it back is a tricky one - it's not visible With normal brightness so how can we be sure the replacement won't have the same problem? We can't.
yep. i have a vague banding when i look very closely.
solution ? keep my eyes more than 3 inches from the screen.
I hate it when people point out things that you have to look very hard at cos you then notice them forever more

for the LED customisation get Light Flow from the market, works great for setting different colours for all sorts of things.

on auto-brightness i can notice it (if i look very hard) on the calendar app.
pump the brightness up to about 85% and go back to the calendar app and i cant see it ... but now my eyes hurt

85% in an unusable brightness for eyes and for battery, so the problem isn't fixable in an easy way. sincerely I
don't want a defective phone and get its defect as a feature.

i had problem like this on my atrix too...( i think most of atrix owners noticed that too )
light grey.........
the only common thing between atrix & GN is Pentile matrix....
i dont know this is the reason...
i just want u to know that you are not alone...

i just picked a random setting to prove/disprove the brightness thing. to be honest i REALLY have to look for these bands on auto-brightness .....
just tried 50% (still too bright in my opinion) and i still cant see banding. nor about 40%.
switched back to auto (which must be only about 20%) and they are there is i get really close and squint.
Seriously .... wouldnt let them worry you !

I have just completed a 3hr car trip using Google navigation and noticed the banding on auto resolution with it disappearing on bright vivid colours or dark/blacks. Thinking of asking phones4u to check out others for a possible swap.
When the phone was on charge i didn't notice any status light or none flashing when a txt was received. Should there be?

definitely seen an LED flashing for notifications. surprising large LED and at the BOTTOM of the phone !

I noticed as soon as I turned my Nexus on today that there was a line across the screen that looked like dirt under the display.
It is only noticeable on low brightness but the auto brightness set the phone to minimum when I turned it on so I saw it. I can only also see it on bright backgrounds like the forum - it is not visible on dark backgrounds or the home screens.
Does anyone else have this issue? I will return it soon and get it replaced but I am wondering if this is widespread or I was just unlucky.
Try turning the brightness right down and looking at this page and see if you see any lines/marks under the glass.
I have a line as well but it's quite small so I'm not really bothered.

Few very feint lines here too. Setting phone to fixed second lowest brightness setting and they vanish though.
This issue is on the gs2's too.

I can also see two faint grey vertical lines on either side of the screen if I have a light (white) background and brightness settings 1-3!
I haven't come across any other issues, I only noticed it after reading this thread and now its in bugging me. But I love the handset.. better than I expected!
Are these lines normal or do I have a duff handset? I have a couple of weeks to change it if necessary but I am also aware of the stock availability due to high demand.
Anyone else in same situation (O2 UK handset)?
I have the same issue on the lowest brightness, but not on the highest. It is also very faintly noticeable on my SGS2 on the lowest brightness. On my Omnia 7 (samoled) it is also very visible on low brightness, I think it is an amoled thing.

Exactly even the iphones with it's tinting issues SGS2 with it's Blotches in the dark
and the glass isn't perfect around the bezel
people just look for this stuff
I don't understood if this lines means defective screen or if all phones will have this lines.

+1 Just as I said in my post above I have 4 amoled screen devices and they all it to some effect. Do not worry, your phone is fine.
could someone please post a picture so i can see what you guys are talking about? i'm curious to see what it looks like since i don't notice this on the samoled screen on my nexus s.
I had that issue with 2 evo screens. I would also get dead pixels or blotches.. Just have to get lucky with one I guess.

I have the same thing on minimum brightness. Its best seen by using a white image as wallpaper and having nothing on your far left and far right home screens. I have many vertical lines. When I scroll the home screen all the way over to the left until I see the blue gradient appear, the gradient varies in shades exactly where the lines are.
I noticed it as soon as i first powered on the device, same as the OP, as it was set to minimum brightness but I dont generally notice it any other time. I dont recall having the same problem with my galaxy S2
I just bought a Galaxy Nexus from Handtec, and I notice that there are lines on the screen that resemble the texture of linen. It's not as noticeable when the brightness it set to max, but when it's darker the lines are very visible.
For other Gnex owners, is this normal? Or maybe this is the effect of the penTile?

This is because AMOLED screens use organic diodes that are more 'noisy' the less brightness there is. That does not mean it actually is more noisy, it simply means that your eyes are able to detect the noise in lower brightness while not as well when the screen is bright.
AMOLED is a funky technology, it's diodes 'age' and their colors have a short transfer period (sometimes if you have a screen turn gray, you can see the previous screens ghost for a short time in low brightness settings).
But the flaws don't outweigh the gains of AMOLED producing the most vibrant colors, contrast and saturation there are at the moment. I love it.
Even though i had an amoled phone before i got the Galaxy Nexus - my Desire was amoled - this effect wasn't very noticeable. Was having the same doubts about the Nexus, thank you for clearing it up.

The ghosting is a bit annoying, but strangely I've come to like the 'linen texture'. When it's subtle.
It almost seems as if by design on the app developer's side.

Hello, I'm total agree with you!
but my preoccupation about it dissapeared when I realized that the screen rotates extremly slowly. (galery, web browser, pdf reader...) with everything.
Sometimes even don’t rotate. I have deactivate all screen animations and the same duration. (2 seconds or more)
My nexus s was much faster with a beta rom with android 4.
Therefore I'm much more worried about this possible issue.
Do you have the same problem?

The rotation delay is intentional. There are some ROMs (see Paul's MCR one) that speed it up a lot.

some people (like me) like it when the slightest tilt doesnt change orientation, its better now that its a more deliberate action.
Whilst on the screen issue...
Does anyone have or have experienced a purple haze in the screen? On my device it a purple haze like colour in the bottom right corner. This changes further up the screen until it becomes (from what I can tell) a normal colour. Hardly noticeable until the screen is dimmed, then quite apparent.
I've arranged a return as I've only had it 14 days. Just wondered if this should be expected...

Yes! Except on my screen its noticeable more on the left hand side of the phone. Is this sort of thing normal for this device?
****! I returned mine to Expansys cause i had the same issue and i tough my phone was damaged! Keep it mind my last device was the iPhone 4 which had a pretty good screen! I really don't know if i should keep this device now since you guys say its normal! My friend has a Razr and his whites backgrounds are amazing and on my Gnex they look like my screen is damaged unacceptable for a device i paid top dollar for!
I would advise you to keep it! At first it seemed awkward, but now i dont even notice it. And the fact that the black is actually unlit is simply amazing. I always look into my apps just to see the amazing contrast between the lit and unlit areas of the phone. And when you set the brightness up, you wont even see the textile lines. Trust me, it is worth it for an HD amoled screen, ICS, and a top of the line nexus phone that will always be up to date. BTW if you get the Razr instead of this nexus, i have no words...

Watching Netflix or anything in full screen it's noticeable. Very noticeable. After one week of owning it about a month ago, I saw a similar topic and thought "this would never happen to me". Fast forward a month later, I have it. And a scratch on my screen after putting it in my pocket only with nothing else in it.

By nav bar, do you mean the notification/status bar? If so, I know exactly what you're talking about. The static cyan text is a burn-in waiting to happen. I noticed a little bit of cyan tint in that area when brightness is low and the screen is white. It's by no means that bad at all but I use the hide the status bar option in ADW to prevent it from getting worse. 2 months later and it hasn't gotten worse.

By nav bar they mean the soft keys (Home - Menu - Recent - Back) buttons on the bottom.
Oh, in that case I haven't seen that problem but I have heard of people with it. You can get rid of those soft-keys with custom mods too that makes your phone full-screen.
I noticed this on my Gnex as well. Rotating the screen clockwise to a landscape orientation, the left side of my screen where the soft buttons were has a notably bluer tint. For the record, I keep my screen on auto, which I was hoping would reduce the burn-in effect. Setting the screen brightness to 100% seems to hide the burn-in. Dunno if that will always be true.
Even worse, when I did a screen compare of my previous Nexus vs the display model at the Verizon store back in early Jan, the demo model's screen was noticeably dimmer and off color even at full brightness. Seemed like running in torch mode 24/7 with a bright red background caused the screen to degrade noticeably after only a week or so.

The only time I notice any sort of image retention (relating to the notification bar) is when I first open the XDA app and it quickly goes full screen. Other than that I never see it. However, I commonly see image retention going from home screen to Market but it fades very quickly.

Mine as well as my friend's has burn-in at the top and bottom where the status bar is and the soft buttons. Also my old nexus S as well as my friend's has burn in at the top status bar. It's inevitable I guess...
I started seeing this too but i quickly switched to transparent top and bottom bars so that those pixels got even wear, and it actually reversed my burn in mostly. My screen is near perfect now.

The leds that are not used as much as the rest of the screen will appear brighter giving you the impression that it is burn in. On the first gen amoled's some would leave and entire white screen on full brightness overnight to normalize or calibrate the leds. Doesn't bug me one bit though.

Exactly right. But the term burn in is so familiar to people it will likely never change.
I forgot to say that to eliminate this burn in i also use full screen browser at all times to hide the status bar. And i consistently rotate the screen to different views while i read my webpages to give the other pixels a rest. The effect is excellent.
To test this the best, install dead pixel detect from market and toggle thru every color. Rotate the screen too to see both areas. The color red is the only one that shows the burn in for me. Which is strange cause blue is the weak color that wears out the quickest. But my blue looks fine.
This will probably happen to all of us to some degree sooner or later.
The image retention that lasts 1-3 seconds we might see within a month or two usage is actually one of the characteristics of AMOLED "Ghosting effect"
which is not the same as AMOLED "reverse led fatigue" (or although technically incorrect but more widely understood term "Burn-ins") which maybe seen as permanent image retention shown as yellowish outlines of icons / keyboard outlines, etc.
Sadly, there's really nothing you can do about this problem after the fact, except to change the screen itself if it is really bothersome. Or you may try to change/delete/make transparent of the permanently placed icons/other objects/pictures to try to reverse these effects.
The only preventive measures would be changing screen rotation from vertical to horizontal, and make sure you don't have the screen on at a stay still image (preferably set auto screen off to 30seconds or so.)
It is humorous how particular many people are about "pocket" screens. Oled technology in reality is like the merger of lcd and plasma screens. And oled does get image retention and burn in similar to plasma. It is harder to avoid on a cell phone with so many possibilities of static images. Really though, it is good to mention/complaint about it so it gets attention and oled manufacturers try to improve upon the technology and try to minimize or get rid of the issues altogether. Many people still think plasmas get burn in very easily and that is far from the truth. The last 3 years or so Panasonic and Samsung have made great strides in minimizing the possibility and you see very few complaints about it. And it is even more humorous that many people think lcd technology is better for viewing because it is newer than plasma when the exact opposite is true. LCD technology is older than plasma, and aside from power usage and weight, lcd doesn't have many benefits over plasma. And because of the post processing to try and overcome the deficiencies of lcd viewing lcd screens are closing the gap in power consumption with plasma. But yeah, all you can do about the image retention of oled now is put pressure on samsung and lg and any newcomers to the technology to improve it. Hopefully, oled will overcome its shortcomings to lcd and plasma and be the better tech out of all three in the near future. I wish they made laptops with plasma screens. That would be an awesome option for laptop users that use theirs as desktop replacements like myself.

All my pixels are fine but I notice the notification bar retention on brown with the XDA app and I notice the bottom (whatever it's called bar) on grey from the app you suggested. Either way, I still love the phone!!!

Hello. So this is my 6th GNexus that I received today, because I just seem to be getting phones with the same dark screen (in my eyes they are dark). This is at 25% brightness.
Or maybe I'm used to my first brand new one that was just perfect to me? It was naturally bright. The current one I have seems good, but the keyboard is darker and in the notification greys and browser bar grays u can notice the color differences. When I go to a website that's background is reddish/organish it's pretty noticeable there.
As of me typing this, I spoke to Verizon and said if on my 7th GNexus (next one coming Thursday 3/29) had the same issue with the screen they'd be consulting it with Samsung to see if it's a software issue or the LED inside the screen is messed up or something.

Seriously? Complaining about a dark screen when you have the brightness set to 25%? The screen is supposed to be dark the lower you set the brightness at; that's just common sense, geez...
I think I've finally decided to stop coming to XDA. Coming to these forums just gives me a headache now. All the absolutely idiotic threads/posts by what seem to be either trolls or complete retards. /endrant
I'm for real.
It's at 25% brightness and I've held not one but two GNex in my hands that looked fine at 25%. Something is wrong.

Maybe the thread wasn't completely necessary, but there's the occasional decent person that likes to input on the situation.

Okay, thanks. I appreciate you coming forth with a more reasonable reply.
In case I'm still being looked upon as a troll, does anyone know the symptoms for a "bad" screen? I searched and read the thread about what's okay and not for a Galaxy Nexus screen but seems like I have some good stuff and some bad stuff, which is confusing.

So I'm guessing you've had a look at the sticky on this forum? I don't see what's so confusing about it? You either have unattainable expectations on what the screen 'should' be or your the most unlucky person ever. There's no way 7 devices in a row would be faulty.

Yeah, you got me thinking now, anyway here are some pictures, while I'm not a pro photographer I tried my best as I was in a hurry. These are taken from an HTC Thunderbolt. (25% brightness) These look right?
Anything odd in the color of the yellow coins in Temple Run?
Red and Brown seem odd to any of you?
Keyboard, here's where I really think it's a bit dark, look behind the keys. This is a screenshot but if the issue shows even in the Android OS Screenshot.. isn't that an issue?

You have the brightness at 25% though? If the screen on another one looked fine at 25% (maybe a demo in the store?) maybe you should think about the lighting where you used it. If it was inside and fine at 25% but you are using yours outside at 25% then that is likely the problem. The brightness needs to be higher in brighter rooms / brighter days.
Try setting it to auto and see if it works fine for you that way. If it does, then you are using it as intended AND it works for you, so no worries. Remember, it is an AMOLED display and is designed to be more power efficient than other displays, so having it on auto should be just fine.
I personally set mine to 20% on another phone (totally different type of display, though the backlight itself might be similar, IDK) and its fine until a bit of sunlight hits it. I then switch it back to auto when I exit a building or enter a place with those obnoxiously bright halogen lights.
I suspect that is the issue you are having, how you are using it vs how it is designed to be used.
I know what you mean. But the 3rd GNex and the first I had, everything on the phone was literally brighter on 25% brightness. So I guess every phone has a different screen? (The phones with working/good) screens.
What I mean by "brighter" is for example the background of the keyboard set when your going to type a message, it varies a lot in brightness from phone to phone.

Are nothing more than standard AMOLED behaviour. They are saying that terrible colors like I am experiencing are normal if the phone is dim.
Is this true? Does anyone have ANY color issues at ANY brightness?

Good to know there are some phones out there that look great all the time
I'm not leaving the store tomorrow until I am certain the screen is perfect!
When you look at the phone in the store tomorrow, and you go to settings, don't get scared away by what appears to be "banding" in the background image. It' just a poor quality image google has chosen to use as the background. See?

Wow, why the hell would they use that AWFUL image?
Tomorrow I'll mostly just be looking for purple colors on low brightness.

Wauw that looks bad. I'm currently struggling with a grainy (gray) screen, but looking at other nexuses that seems normal. On light i can however see darker spots and lines on black screens (including boots and black images) but seeing other topics crawled with the same issue I don't put much trust in a device without it...

Oddly enough, neither of my Nexus' have had the grainy screen problem, just this discoloration
I received my 2nd Nexus today after the firsts' volume buttons stopped working. The new one has purple where black used to be, like yours, but doesn't make the experience any worse. However, when I pull the notifications area down on low brightness, the screen dims further - does this happen on yours? It's quite annoying...
Mine is okay. Not perfect but okay. There is still a little bit of purple (not that extreme like uours) but after a few days you barely notice it

on low brightness the notification tray is almost an opaque black
Same here but top bar gets even darker when notifications area is pulled down, even when brightness is set to 0. Whites are a LOT better tho.
Edit: just noticed that when taking photos, the brightness of whats being photographed affects the screens brightness. Also, top half of pages on tapatalk are a lot brighter than the bottom halves, it's strange and quite annoying once you notice it...
