Latest updates busted magnetic cover wakeup? - Nexus 7 (2013) Q&A

I've been getting a lot of android 5 updates recently, and on both my 2013 and original Nexus 7, the magnetic covers no longer seem to wake the tablets. I wouldn't think the sensors in both of them would break at the same time . I remember the tablet had this problem when it was first released, then updates fixed it. Have they gone back to the original code again to preserve battery time or something? Has anyone else seen this?

I have 2 n7 (2013) one completely stock, the other custom rom and kernel both work with my Moko magnetic flipcover

How many times has your Nexus been replaced? + rant

I got my first Nexus about a month ago. About 3 days ago the charging port kicked the bucket. I couldn't charge it at all. I called Verizon and got a warranty replacement. Cool. Came in about 5 hours ago. The very first thing I noticed upon powering up the replacement was that it had moderate/severe screen burn-ins. As well as random spots all over that don't match the color/tint of the rest of the screen.
So at this point I'm pretty much heated. My first nexus was a CPO (certified pre owned) as well. I got VZW to swap my Stratosphere for it.
Anyway... I figured I'd download a ROM to install until my next nexus comes in (#3) because I hate being on stock. I get a low battery warning so I plug it in. I notice IT'S DOING THE EXACT SAME THING AS MY LAST ONE. Any little bit of pressure or movement of the charger causes my phone to lose connection and stop charging..... I tried my original charger. I tried my brothers Droid 3 charger and even the brand new charger I bought when my first nexus started having issues. None of them work! So I tried all of those chargers on my brothers and dads phone and they work fine!! No amount of movement disrupts charging on their phones at all with any of my cables. I tried every combo of charging cable/phone as well as using different power outlets on different breakers. I couldn't believe I got a phone out of the box with the exact same problem I'm trying to return my original one for. This is ridiculous!!!
"Sir, all of our certified pre owned devices pass a 100-point inspection" *cough*BS*cough* If you actually put this phone through a 100 point inspection then somebody needs to get fired because it should have failed the moment he looked at the screen. It's that obvious. Unless they don't inspect the screen - at least when it's on (which makes no sense to me).
So I was wondering if you guys had similar experiences? I knew I was sending my replacement I just opened up back - literally seconds after I powered it on.
Anyways now that my rant is over, how many times have you had to get your nexus replaced before you got a good one?
That sounds like bad luck pal. My own GNex is a GSM one I got a couple of weeks ago pre-owned and it is running fine. It does seem a bit of a lottery regarding the build quality. Does the LTE version tend to have more issues than the GSM?
I've had no problems with my GSM Galaxy Nexus.

I have no idea. Only ever been with Verizon. I just can't believe I tell them that my charge port died so they send me a replacement with a dead charge port. Plus a faulty screen. Double whammy lol. #3 is being over-nighted to me free of charge. I'll post back some more results about that one tomorrow. I wish I had a camera to take pictures of the screen of my replacement. I'd use my other nexus, but as I said I got it CPO which means I had to buy a battery seperate and only have 1.

Had my GSM Nexus for two months and haven't had any problems with it, but I've been worrying lately about mot USB port since so many is having problem with it.
Sprint Nexus since March, got a little burn in near the top of the screen, but haven't needed a replacement yet
No problems here. Received mine in January, bought one for the wife in June and all seems to be well.

No problems for me also.
none mine was great right off the bat
I had the charging port issues with an older nexus.take a small jewellers screw driver and gently pry the small wafer tab you see a hair away from the wall its close to, that will fix it just be very gentle and pull the battery first. I had the same issues until I did that.

I tried that. It worked only as a temporary setup for my first one. Every suggestion on this forum has been tried and failed for me, sadly.

Bought mine begining of July, had issues charging sent it in and came back two weeks later with new port. Strangely before the repair it would charge to 100% and I usually could get around 3.5-4 hrs of screen time and 16+ hours before needing to charge, now with the new port only goes to 92% and screen time 2.5 hrs and about 12 hours sometimes less, haven't changed my usage, really wonder if they borked my battery somehow during the repair. Mine was manufactured march 2012.
Verizon GNex since late April/early May, no issues here.
Once for a faulty charging port at the bottom of the phone

Tylt Vu vs. Google Nexus Wireless Charger

So I got both of these for Christmas but it's a little overboard to keep them both so I'll be sending one back.
I haven't really found anything comparing the two. Does anyone have both? Or have seen both?
Which would you prefer and why?

If you check out the forum there are people who express concerns about the TYLT causing the N5 to overheat. Based on that alone, I would go with the Nexus Charger.
I have an N4 Wireless orb that I use with my N5 and it works great.

I did but (if I am correct), people who experienced the overheating used daydream. Fortunately, I don't use daydream so both are still options. Thank you for your input though! :good:
Edit: Actually found another thread. I may take that into consideration. Thank you!

I bought the Tylt Vu for $35 with a promo code, but haven't received it yet. I was also worried about the overheating issues, but for the most part, the negative reviews may be just confirmation bias on my part when looking for reasons not to buy something.
Anyone else have issues with the Vu?

I received the Google Nexus charger yesterday and the Tylt Vu is coming in tomorrow. I read the thread in depth, and apparently the company has found the issue and is working on a fix? I'm a little hesitant to keep it but like you, would love more information about the tylt vu!

Let me know how it works. I got the red one, in case that matters.
I've had the vu for several months (got it from kick starter). Used it with nexus 4 and now nexus 5. I have no over heating issues. It gets no warmer than my other 3 qi chargers (energizer, lg puck, and generic). Granted I don't have the official n5 charger, but I would take the vu because it's a stand and I love that.

Does the Vu actually charge the phone whether in portrait or landscape sitting on the charger? Cause last i remember, they advertised that in the promo video, but looking closely at the promo video showed the phone NOT charging in landscape orientation.

Do you use a case with your Nexus? If so, does that interfere with the induction charging?

I have the Tylt Vu, the new Nexus Charger, the Orb, the LG (Verizon branded) pad, and the Energizer pad.
I have had the Tylt Vu even before the Kickstarter finished lol. It just showed up at my office one day. I got it for my Nexus 4. Worked fantastically until I tried putting Kit Kat on the N4. I had heating issues and I believe due to wakelocks, but that's not proven. I stopped using it because it kept waking the phone up at night and that bugged the living bejezzus out of me and changed it out for the LG pad until a fix for my waking issues on the N4. Then when the N5 was introduced, it was a no brainer and I bought that one to replace my N4. I gave the LG pad and N4 to my wife and now using the Tylt at home for my everynight charging and no waking in the middle of the night.
I use the new Nexus Wireless charger in the car in conjunction with a vent mount. And because I use a bumper, the magnets grab without issues. I tried my set up with a tpu case and also the Ringke Fusion and neither would stick.
Now I am waiting for my early bird Air dock from indiegogo and seeing if that works better than my diy setup lol.

So I used it and it does get noticeably warm. I haven't experienced it getting hot yet though. The official charger gets my nexus 5 temperature to around 25.5 degrees celcius and the tylt gets my phone to around 37 degrees celcius. I'm not totally sure which one I want to keep yet.

I don't think that's too abnormal. My phone idles at 30 degrees and charges at 40-45 via USB.

magnetic cover not working with deb

Hi sorry if this has been discussed already but I couldn't find anything like my situation. I just upgraded my n7 2013 flo model to the deb LTE version and for what ever reason my magnetic case doesn't work with this version of the tablet. I close the lid and the screen stays on I even tried using a regular magnet to see if it would activate the sensor and nothing any one have any idea what's going on? Its 100% stock except for being rooted and custom recovery

My magnetic cover is working on my deb, but when i've tried it with a regular magnet, nothing happens.
two choices for you :
It's an Hardware problem, so >> RMA
Your case magnet has runaway Or for an obscur reason, the magnetic cover support is deactivated in Kernel.

Nexus 7 Black Screen Issue

I've had major issues with my Nexus 7 (2013) over the last few days and not too sure what to do.
As of Friday the screen won't turn on. It is not a flat battery. I am still receiving PushBullet sync notifications on my macbook and I can still hear the "Screenshot Captured" sound, as well as the unlock sound if I unlock my pattern (muscle memory of where the dots are). I have tried different power button combinations with no luck.
Is this a known bug? Has anyone else experienced this?
The tablet was bought on 5th December 2013 from an electronics retail store. I still have the receipts and Warranty Card from the box.
the tablet lives in a leather flip case and has a screen protector too. It has never been dropped on a hard surface.
Thanks in advance.
Try rebooting from adb.

Nexus 7 sinking ship.....

Hello everyone, My nexus 7 (2013) is a sicking ship. My battery is shot and I also have a tear not on the glass but inside the screen. I am going to assume there is no fix that might save it or?
If my poor nexus has to go to the bottom, I am wondering what spiritual successor or alternative is there? . I would like something that can be rooted and preferably not USB-C as I am still rocking a Nexus 5 (easier to carry one cable (one to rule them all)). I had my eye on Huawei MediaPad M2, however I am still doing research.
Thank you for everyone in advance that are helping me out.

Same boat here. Mine has been slowly dying over 2 years. auto rotation broke, usb port busted. touch screen sometimes doesnt work until you slap the back a few times.
Now i'm getting wifi randomly disconnecting in addition to trying to get ps4 remote play to work and now netflix wont load.
Everyone seems to be pointing to ipad, and i can get a free mini2 from work, but I'd rather pay for android than a free apple.
