Has any one got a solution to why the android market will let you download some apps but not others. This problem only happens with certain apps.
Contacted one of the app developers, and he thinks there may be a problem with my data partition.
I'm on stock rom, latest froyo update, and have not rooted. thanks, in advance, for your help.
Do you get an error message?
I just get the message installation unsuccessful
Try resetting ur phone and clear cach or make a different Google account
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
region and ROM version also apply
Go to menu/settings/applications/manage applications click the all tab and scroll down to market. Clear data and cache. That should fix it.

+1 for this but if not can you list some example apps so we can see if it's just you (B. East) or not?
The apps i seem to have a problem with are, Cordy the game, storage analyzer, and gun brothers game. I some times have problems with updating from the market. I have to un-install some apps then download them again to update. this happens when the app has been moved to the sd card, but not with all the apps that I have moved to the sd card

No problems here. This is going to be something up with your phone.

Not all apps like being on the SD Card. Do all your apps specifically say they have been updated to allow them to be moved to sd card?
You may have to move them to phone if they continue to cause issues (and to be honest, with a 1GB internal memory, putting apps onto a slow sd card really isn't worth doing.

Did you try this?
If all of the above fails to work you will probably have to factory reset the phone.
I tend to download using wifi, going to try downloading over 3g and see if that makes any difference, if not, will do a factory reset. thanks for the help though.
Before you do that you still haven't said if you cleared the market cache. Did you?
yes, i done that, tried to download again and got a message, "could not install on USB storage or sd card". First time I have seen that message.
Is this whilst trying to update an app or download a new one?
If to update then move the app to the phone first.
this is trying to download a new app.
Had a quick Google and found something to try.
mount the phone so you can access the sdcard.
Set to show hidden files
Go to folder .android_secure
Delete a file in there smdl2tmp1.asec
Then try again.
thanks, I will give it a go. can I use a file explorer to do this, because am not sure how you mount the phone, I am quite new to android, use to use winmo mobiles
you can yes, my favourites are Astro, Linda and ES.
I had a look in android_secure, made sure all hidden files would be visible, and could not find any files at all. checked to make sure that the hidden file visible setting in the file explorer was switched to the correct setting, and could not see any files at all.
Have I lost some files? if i have i have no idea how. do I need to do a factory reset?

Damn. When I found that possible solution I noticed that as many people said they did have it as said they didn't. I was hoping you would be lucky.
In this case the same file (apparently this is a known bug and has been marked for next version fix) is being stored in the system directory of the phone and without root you can't get access to it.
I'm afraid the only way to clear it (without root) is a factory reset, sorry.
thanks for your help, I will factory reset and see what happens.
So, I just got my Galaxy S3 and after going to the beginner rooting thread and downloading the root kit and installing the drivers, I had some problems. Now, when I plug my phone into my computer, sometimes it says the hardware ID can't be found, then when i plug it in, it will be found but will take a while to let me explore it then other times it will act as normal. But, when I try to move files around or create new files on my internal or external SD card, it says that it's not there or it's stopped responding even though I can look around in the files.
Try this for the hardware id

I was told not to install KIES because it would interfere with ODIN. Maybe that was just for the purposes or rooting it.

Many thanks. I can always count on this community for helping
Okay, so, I installed the latest drivers (couldn't find a download for the old version everyone says works) and have kies. When I look at the driver installation thing, everything says it is good to go except for MTP, which is always says 'looking for preconfigured driver folders....'
Also, I still can't make a new folder on the external SD card and when i try to move files around, it freezes up. It will pop up with an error saying the device has stopped responding or it has been disconnected.
I'm pretty sure I need to make a folder on my external called 'android.secure' so that the nandroid will backup apps. And I need to find out a way that I can backup directly to the external rather than the internal and have to move it to the external.
so, I have a SGN2 N-7100 rooted! last week I noticed that the built in gallery and music player they didnt show the files which was in my sd card! when I took a new photo BAAM it was showing but not the old photos
I search everywhere and tried everything but nothing until I made a hard reset and wipe everything clean;/
after that it was ok!
UNTIL this morning, This morning I updated some apps and then I noticed that the problem was back :'( I tried moving the files into the internal memory but again nothing was showing! I tried other apps like "bowl fish" and "android music player but nothing!
I also noticed that now and the last time it happened I downloaded some pictures from chrome and the notifications in the bar, they didnt leave until I deleted them from the downloads app!
pls help me I can do hard reset again again and personalize my phone all the time!

Which rom/os you are using? Either your problem is not about hardware. Check the file properties if they're System Protected (Windows), these files mostly won't shown in phone, this is said to be virus problem. Which is the company of your memory card? Because cheap mc's from unknown vendors can cause such problem!

i updated OTA normally.a week ago..everything was fine..but since last night , when i open gmail or whatsapp for example it seems like somehow the app permissions for contacts for those apps were reset and i had to re allow contacts access again.
the only thing i changed/tested in settings prior to that error happening, was the "Force activites to be resziable" setting in Developer Options and the "Magnification Gesture" in Assessibility settings. that wouldn't affect the apps permissions would it?

Okay I found my answer at least. Was your SD Card encrypted? my issue disappeared after i formatted my SD card and replaced it with backup files prior my update to Nougat and now it doesn't reset my app permission.
So if I was you, I'd try copying all your files out of your SD card, and format it via the phone, restart and see what happens. Hopefully you have backup of your content on your SD card, otherwise you'll need to nit pick through to figure out what was encrypted and what was not..

my SD card was not encrypted. IIRC I had to to a full factory reset then it was ok.
I've been having the same issue, I fixed mine by removing my SD card, copied the contents to my pc, formatted the card on the pc, copied the files back to the SD card, factory reset the phone, reinstalled all my apps, put the SD card back in and everything is fine now, nothing lost after a couple of reboots.
I have since installed Magisk and rebooted a couple of times and it's still working as it should be

I've hit this issue too and my phone is absolutely stock. No encryption. It seems to be an android thing that just happens at random.
Im thinking that it may have something to do with htc boost+. Do you have it installed and running?..

I've never seen it before, even reflashing a stock RUU didn't fix it, hence me going the sd card format route, I had uninstalled boost+ before and It didn't make any difference. Interestingly my app data for some apps was there after a fresh install because they were on the sd card, I always have that set to removable storage.
I'm having the issue now. I tried the above mentioned about formatting SD card and it worked, now permission don't reset but now when I try to transfer my backup files back the computer says the SD card is write protected... (-_-)... so the SD card is the issue?
Update #1
Solved: After billion tries to format the SD the computer finally formatted it and just restored all files back. Did a reboot and permissions where there, let's see the next couple of days... thank you all
Update #2
Tried a second reboot and the issue came back... gonna have to try the full factory reset and see... ???
This resolved for me when disabling system permissions for anything that did not need them
System > Apps > Configure Apps > Special Access > Modify System Settings 'no' to everything that doesn't need special access
I bumped up to 9 (47.2.A.2.33) and sacrificed wifi calling and volte (waiting for US firmware to catch up) but it's still totally worth it.
+ SD card is visible to apps!!! Meaning, you can store more than pictures on it. I spent the last year with the 'low disk space' notification on, uninstalling apps so i could update others. Now it's like i own an Android phone again
+ Bluetooth no longer hangs trying to connect to last device for 30-60s before you can connect to any other paired device
+ Bluetooth devices show battery levels
+ Google / Assistant voice commands launch to mic almost instantly
+ System feels very fast
+ Rotation lock improvement
+ New volume control works well
+ speakers sound perfect unless using Clearaudio+
+ Misc improvements
- new quick settings is both ugly and less useful
- can't get wifi calling in US (apparently) until 9 drops here because you need the oem....sin file
- still plenty of bloat on stock sony ROM
have you tried swapping the oem sin file with the 8.0 US oem file ?

Yeah, tried adding the newest US to a TMobile and a custom firmware. I've only checked for wifi calling though, not volte specifically.
How is the battery life after the update ?
No bugs ?
And how did you proceed ?
What I don't like about version 9.
- Clock on the left
- Random GPS issues, apps or wdigets that can't find position. Never had this problem until the update.
- Screen auto-brightness almost always get it wrong. Old auto brightness functioned seamlessly, i forgot it was there. I'm always having to manual update the brightness now.
- UI Tuner hard to find, and important optiosn missing. How do I get the headset icon back??? I needed that.
- The top swipe down menu now requires 2 swipes the useful stuff, like the settings cog.
What I like about version 9.
Um... higher API level, so support for the future is better? That's honestly all I can think of at this point.
Hello Dean
What would you recommend for optimization of the Oreo version ? Firmware update, or just leave it stock ?
Hello.
For the brightness, just set it to what you want and after a while, it will be ok.
It learns your setting and will learn how you set it. so it's bad ton the beggining and then after 1 mouth it's ok.
It wass too bright for me at the beggining and i was always setting it down, now it's ok.
Yes that is not that important to me as battery life and gps
I've seeen several posts where people complain of important drain while the phone is idle
That would be a disaster
4G being unstable for everyday use or
GPS malfunctioning in the middle of a 6 day hike in the french alps would also not be so good
Of course it will be best if the phone is intuitive and the camera gets good results without having to remake the custom adjustments for each photo, but otherwise all the flashy stuff, speedtests etc is not really important unless you are a serious gamer.
4Gb ram is A LOT of power. When I was gaming it was only 64 kilo bytes (C64) and even my Imac only has 4Gb

I can't compare battery life because with 8, I usually kept my phone in airplane mode and just used wifi calling and texts. That gave me great battery life around the house. I did use it heavily one day, lots of video calling and such. I got down to around 10% battery after 6:45 of screen time, so that's impressive!
I haven't used the GPS specifically.
The whole upgrade process was long because I backed up my DRM keys. Otherwise, just backup your data, use Xperifirm and newflasher -- it's easy.
Hi @jayarmstrong - would you please be able to share the procedure to update to that version?
I did receive a notification from Sony that it is available for my phone, but no methods work or detect the actual new version.
SONY support is asking for my patience, which I haven't got much of
TIA

If I understand it correctly, it doesn't mean that you can now install apps on SD card. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong? But I think that this option is still blocked by Sony (as it was in android 8.0).

If the built-in upgrade utility isn't offering the upgrade yet, it's probably not ready for your region. Doing it manually is a lot of work and the instructions are scattered around the forum with bits and pieces that are working, abandoned, or out of date. I don't have a complete set of directions to hand you but here's a couple snips from my notes:
backup DRM keys if you want your camera to work well edit: only needed if you're going to unlock bootloader or root
download new firmware using Xperifirm
install new firmware on your phone using Newflasher
to keep settings & data: delete persist*.sin, userdata*.sin, cache*.sin and all *.ta.*Data, settings and apps work as before

Sorry for the confusion. I can't install apps to the SD card but I can now direct apps to move their storage to the SD card. I'm doing this from the settings within apps, not from the Phone > Settings > Apps > Storage page. This was extremely helpful for me because I was able to move about 15GB of music, podcasts, books, etc. to the SD card.
There are other options, like rooting, that will allow you to move apps completely to the SD card, repartition your internal storage for more space, move apps to system locations, etc. Good luck!
Ok, so I could say to Whatsapp to storage media on the SD card again?

Thanks, bro - good to know. I think I will rather wait for the official update to hit me.
I simply haven't got the time any more like I had had before to mock around with these hacks.
But just out of curiosity, where are the .sin and .ta files kept? Or are they individually for each app?

They are the partition files in the firmware you can download with Xperifirm if you choose to decimpress the files (which you should if you want to use newflasher).
You don't have to unlock your bootloader abd make a drm backup to install official Sony fw you download with newflasher. The drm keys only get wiped when you unlock. So if you don't want to root your phone, you can install a different customization (and Android version) by just downloading and flashing it with a locked bootloader.

If Whatsapp has the option for external storage, then yes, it should work. On Oreo, on this phone, apps like Spotify, PocketCasts, Pocket, etc. could only see & use the internal storage. Now, the same apps can see the SD card and successfully move the bulk of their storage there.
