Android 9 upgrade very worthwhile! - Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact Guides, News, & Discussion

I bumped up to 9 (47.2.A.2.33) and sacrificed wifi calling and volte (waiting for US firmware to catch up) but it's still totally worth it.
+ SD card is visible to apps!!! Meaning, you can store more than pictures on it. I spent the last year with the 'low disk space' notification on, uninstalling apps so i could update others. Now it's like i own an Android phone again
+ Bluetooth no longer hangs trying to connect to last device for 30-60s before you can connect to any other paired device
+ Bluetooth devices show battery levels
+ Google / Assistant voice commands launch to mic almost instantly
+ System feels very fast
+ Rotation lock improvement
+ New volume control works well
+ speakers sound perfect unless using Clearaudio+
+ Misc improvements
- new quick settings is both ugly and less useful
- can't get wifi calling in US (apparently) until 9 drops here because you need the oem....sin file
- still plenty of bloat on stock sony ROM

have you tried swapping the oem sin file with the 8.0 US oem file ?

Yeah, tried adding the newest US to a TMobile and a custom firmware. I've only checked for wifi calling though, not volte specifically.

How is the battery life after the update ?
No bugs ?
And how did you proceed ?

What I don't like about version 9.
- Clock on the left
- Random GPS issues, apps or wdigets that can't find position. Never had this problem until the update.
- Screen auto-brightness almost always get it wrong. Old auto brightness functioned seamlessly, i forgot it was there. I'm always having to manual update the brightness now.
- UI Tuner hard to find, and important optiosn missing. How do I get the headset icon back??? I needed that.
- The top swipe down menu now requires 2 swipes the useful stuff, like the settings cog.
What I like about version 9.
Um... higher API level, so support for the future is better? That's honestly all I can think of at this point.

Hello Dean
What would you recommend for optimization of the Oreo version ? Firmware update, or just leave it stock ?

Hello.
For the brightness, just set it to what you want and after a while, it will be ok.
It learns your setting and will learn how you set it. so it's bad ton the beggining and then after 1 mouth it's ok.
It wass too bright for me at the beggining and i was always setting it down, now it's ok.

Yes that is not that important to me as battery life and gps
I've seeen several posts where people complain of important drain while the phone is idle
That would be a disaster
4G being unstable for everyday use or
GPS malfunctioning in the middle of a 6 day hike in the french alps would also not be so good
Of course it will be best if the phone is intuitive and the camera gets good results without having to remake the custom adjustments for each photo, but otherwise all the flashy stuff, speedtests etc is not really important unless you are a serious gamer.
4Gb ram is A LOT of power. When I was gaming it was only 64 kilo bytes (C64) and even my Imac only has 4Gb

I can't compare battery life because with 8, I usually kept my phone in airplane mode and just used wifi calling and texts. That gave me great battery life around the house. I did use it heavily one day, lots of video calling and such. I got down to around 10% battery after 6:45 of screen time, so that's impressive!
I haven't used the GPS specifically.
The whole upgrade process was long because I backed up my DRM keys. Otherwise, just backup your data, use Xperifirm and newflasher -- it's easy.

Hi @jayarmstrong - would you please be able to share the procedure to update to that version?
I did receive a notification from Sony that it is available for my phone, but no methods work or detect the actual new version.
SONY support is asking for my patience, which I haven't got much of
TIA

Can you really install apps on the SD-card? That would be wonderfull, I already intended to buy the XZ4 compact, because I have not enough space

From what i have read, there isn't going to be a XZ4 Compact

If I understand it correctly, it doesn't mean that you can now install apps on SD card. Or maybe I'm doing something wrong? But I think that this option is still blocked by Sony (as it was in android 8.0).

If the built-in upgrade utility isn't offering the upgrade yet, it's probably not ready for your region. Doing it manually is a lot of work and the instructions are scattered around the forum with bits and pieces that are working, abandoned, or out of date. I don't have a complete set of directions to hand you but here's a couple snips from my notes:
backup DRM keys if you want your camera to work well edit: only needed if you're going to unlock bootloader or root
download new firmware using Xperifirm
install new firmware on your phone using Newflasher
to keep settings & data: delete persist*.sin, userdata*.sin, cache*.sin and all *.ta.*Data, settings and apps work as before

Sorry for the confusion. I can't install apps to the SD card but I can now direct apps to move their storage to the SD card. I'm doing this from the settings within apps, not from the Phone > Settings > Apps > Storage page. This was extremely helpful for me because I was able to move about 15GB of music, podcasts, books, etc. to the SD card.
There are other options, like rooting, that will allow you to move apps completely to the SD card, repartition your internal storage for more space, move apps to system locations, etc. Good luck!

Ok, so I could say to Whatsapp to storage media on the SD card again?

Thanks, bro - good to know. I think I will rather wait for the official update to hit me.
I simply haven't got the time any more like I had had before to mock around with these hacks.
But just out of curiosity, where are the .sin and .ta files kept? Or are they individually for each app?

They are the partition files in the firmware you can download with Xperifirm if you choose to decimpress the files (which you should if you want to use newflasher).
You don't have to unlock your bootloader abd make a drm backup to install official Sony fw you download with newflasher. The drm keys only get wiped when you unlock. So if you don't want to root your phone, you can install a different customization (and Android version) by just downloading and flashing it with a locked bootloader.

If Whatsapp has the option for external storage, then yes, it should work. On Oreo, on this phone, apps like Spotify, PocketCasts, Pocket, etc. could only see & use the internal storage. Now, the same apps can see the SD card and successfully move the bulk of their storage there.

[Q] Storage Space Running Out, Insufficient storage, my phone trying to screw me?

So...
I've had this problem for a while now, getting worse from day to day. I've asked about this before, but it wasnt solved.
Basically my phone is taking up data in the background. Probably updating, downloading something. Its so bad, that if i dont turn off data on the go, my 1.5GB are used in a day. Sync is turned off at all times
And another side effect of that is, that all that data probably has to be stored somewhere. So Im getting the storage space running out error. Kinda annoying cause I cant use gmail, Cant install any apps(insufficient storage available) etc.
I really have no idea where all that data is(after searching through all the folders for a while now)..
I'm on the latest AOKP Milestone(4.2)
Thanks!
There are a couple things I recommend doing in your position. First thing I would do would be to get an app that allows for more informative breakdown of what is using the storage. Something like diskusage should do the trick. This will allow you to see exactly where data is going, opposed to "misc" Perhaps this will show exactly what is taking up the storage, since you are rooted perhaps backups are the problem.
If that doesn't tell you what you want to know, or if you think an app may be using data behind the scenes then the next step I would do is to use some sort of data usage monitor. The built in one may suffice, settings > data usage. If not there may be better apps out there, although to be honest I have zero experience with those.

Uploaded a pic what diskusage says. When i hit media it only opens the file manager and directs me to sd storage
BTW this what Onavo says has been consuming data this month:
Market Downloader - 800MB mobile, 2.4Gb Wifi, all in background - and no, i didnt download anything from the play store on the go and hardly anything on wifi - havent updated my apps in weeks b/c of missing storage
Android OS + Others - 530MB mobile and a whooping 12GB on Wifi! All in Background too.

It looks like you have some nested 0 folders in that pic. Perhaps cleaning that up will clear up some space. Side note, if you haven't updated your custom recovery in a long time it may not be a bad time to look into that.

If I were in your situation, I would probably just get a clean start. This also would get rid of the nesting problem I mentioned above.
- I would make a backup of my current setup, probably just using Titanium Backup.
- Backup everything I want to keep from my phone to my PC, going through the 0 folders.
- Use fastboot to flash factory images, allowing it to wipe everything in the process. The .bat file should do this automatically.
- Use fastboot to install a recent custom recovery.
- Push the sdcard backup from my PC to my phone.
From here you have a couple options, root and reinstall Titanium backup and restore some of your apps (no system data) or go back into custom ROMs. You could flash AOKP again, or pick a different ROM.
A bit heavy handed, but I think that would be the least time consuming option considering the problem(s).

Basically when 4.2 came out, it brought along multi-user functionality. Custom recoveries at the time, when wiping and installing ended up creating the nesting problem. Recoveries then were updated, which doesn't create a bunch of /0 folders (one existing is correct). This was a super common problem about a year ago when 4.2 came to be. There were hundreds of threads about this problem, with more detailed info about what happens, why, and how to fix it. Wiping everything is one of the solutions, and since this isn't your only problem, this would probably be the recommended solution.

I am not sure where you read that a wiping everything isn't possible, but whoever said that is all sorts of wrong. There are multiple ways to wipe things.
Just did what you said and it looks like everything worked! Everything is deleted, I have almost 13 gigs of free space, rooted my phone again and I'll probably install aokp or paranoid in a couple days.
No 0 Folders anymore and I'm sure as hell hoping that my data consumption will be fine now. I'll keep you updated on that in a few weeks again, but thanks for the help!
looks good thanks bud

[Q] Data recovery on Xperia S (rooted)

Hi all,
Just wanted to start by saying, big thanks to DooMLoRD and the rest of the xda-developers forum for providing me the tools to get root access to a friends phone, who has recently accidentally deleted all their photos and videos. If we are successful, I'll definitely be suggesting that they make a donation to Doom for his epic contributions
I'm trying to help them recover the lost media. I know that typically performing data recovery on a phone requires root access, so I have gone ahead and done this. On with...
My question:
I've got an Xperia S running Jellybean (4.1.2) which is rooted. However attempting to use my data recovery tools on the phone, the device is not shown as a storage device. As you may well be aware, the S does not come with external storage. The S also has the 'mass storage mode' removed. Nice one Sony, give professionals another reason to avoid your products in the future...
I don't want to Flash the phone since any added files will start destroying the potentially recoverable data (plus I'd simply rather not format the phone if possible).
Is it possible to mount the internal storage of the Sony Xperia S as a drive so that I can run my PC based data recovery tools on it?
I imagine App Store apps are too lightweight to handle a file-based undeletion. If I could just see the device in my recovery apps I'm sure I'd be in business! I've attempted Recuva and R-Studio.
Doing some more research (like a good little n00b) I imagine I'm going to need SD Mounter.
I'm a little thrown off because 'SD' usually describes SD cards (of which the Xperia S has none). Also, the screenshots (for SD mounter) seem to indicate it's for ICS so I'm not sure if there's going to be a compatibility issue there.
Am I barking up the wrong tree by making this assumption? Should JellyBean have access to the mass storage and the option is simply not showing for some reason? Anyway, I'll continue working under my assumptions until someone suggests otherwise...
To get SD Mounter running, I'm going to need BusyBox. The problem is, I'm trying to read the BusyBox installation FAQ, and I'm finding it very vague. Like...
and save it under the name "busybox"
Click to expand...
Click to collapse
but it does not specify WHERE. Make a folder called 'busybox' on the root folder of the phone? Somewhere on my PC (the page suggests its for the PC rather than the phone)? Also I'm seeing Linux-looking command lines, but I'm on a PC... can I run this via the command prompt in Windows? I downloaded the 'binaries' like it said, but there aren't any executables in here...
Can anyone shed some light?
There's an app called BusyBox Installer, that installs it correctly on my Xperia S. That SD Mounter app works perfectly on 4.1.2, though. I use time to time. It just messes up a bit with Media Scanner, requiring me to do a reboot on the phone to make it work again.
I wish you lot of luck trying to recover your files. I once tried something like that, but came unsuccessful. There were some media I wish I had saved, but it wasn't THAT important, so I just gave up.
Suggest to your friend, though, to get an account on Mega, Box.net or Dropbox. All of them has auto backup of camera media to the server. All of them has options to backup only on WiFi, and even when charging only. The first two has 50 Gb of free storage for life (Box, you just need to sign with your Xperia device), and the later only 2 Gb, but you can get more and more with promotions.
Alternatively, he can enable the Google+ Auto Backup. There is 15 Gb (shared with Gmail and Google Drive) for pictures on original resolution or unlimited on 2048px, compressed. On Google+, though, you have the Auto Awesome, which make some awesome images.
Hope it helped. If I can help any further, just tag me

As I'm a lazy person, who can't find a way to break quotes into multiple parts (serious, how do you Do that, without having to write the quote code every time? It is not much, but I'm really lazy, so yeah.
Yep, that's the app. There's no reason for Google to block root apps. It's a function of the OS itself, just hidden from users. It's one of the easiest things to do on a Nexus device, after all. It's hidden because, if used without caution, can soft brick your device. But, don't worry, that shouldn't do any harm. At it least it hasn't with my device until now haha
As I said, I had already lost lots of stuff, and I didn't bothered much to go any further to recover it. It was a simply Install Recuva, run on the SD card and see if I could restore anything. Nothing? OK, no worries. As you already mentioned in your first post, avoid at all costs writing new files to the SD Card partition.
About the lecture, yeah, I imagined you had already told them, but it doesn't hurt to tell anyway.
About the SD Card on the Xperia S, another technical info you might or might not know, and also doesn't hurt to tell. Until Android 2.3, devices with a big internal storage required a partition for cache, one for data (apps and their own data), one for system, and one SD Card. The last one in Fat32 (plus others, but those are just too small and insignificant, for most, anyway) Think of a normal hard drive with plenty of partitions. Since Xperia S was developed (and launched) with 2.3 (one of Sony's biggest mistakes with this phone), it had to follow those "guidelines".
With Android 4.0 and beyond, the above mentioned data and SD Card turned into one partition, in Ext4 format. That data partition stores both apps and their data, and also other types of media, like media, documents, and etc. That storage goes into a mounted folder.
Anyway, again, wish you good luck. If they aren't very close friends/relatives, you should charge some money for all the hassle if you recover haha

Not in Xperia S case. As I said, it is on Fat32, so it is easily mount-able on Windows.
On any phone with Android 4.0 or more, you'd need a Linux to do the recovery. You can't format it, or else you will turn the device into a really expensive paperweight.

Good thread Paul nice to have a place to discuss this tablet i have just posted in the other thread you refereed to but will also post it here below
I bought a 10.1 Allwinner A31s 16GB from Ebay for £60 the device details show as a YONESTOPTECH BS1078
It is a nice tablet for the price and came pre rooted witch was great.
One of the first things i did was make a backup off the Rom with online nandroid backup as i like messing and wanted a backup just in case i messed up. and here is where things got messy, online nandroid backup would only be able to restore if i had a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP)
So off i went and tried to install TWRP from the guide on this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2210676
Long story short it didn't work an i thought i had bricked it as it was stuck on the boot logo, i managed to find FW for a Q102 A31S Tablet Stock Firmware 4.4.2 wich is the same tablet under a different name, after several failed attempts to recover through phoenix suite as i couldn't get it into recovery, i downloaded phoenixcard and successfully flashed the FW Phew all was good lol.
So if anyone has successfully installed a custom recovery any info would be grateful as it would be nice to try a custom Rom.
I have also had a little play with dragonface for allwinner devices as this lets you change a few things on the stock ROM ISO and then you can re flash with your custom changes, Two things i would like to tweak are volume and lcd settings as i feel the volume on this device is to quiet and the lcd contrast could do with tweaking. in dragon face you can load the sys.cofig settings, i have found the volume config but haven't got a clue what can be changed to increase the max volume level so if anybody has any knowledge then any input would be appreciated, here is the code for audio settings,
Code:
;pa_single_vol,pa_double_vol: 31 level,1.5db/step.0x1f is the large volume.
;cap_vol:use for system record,0x0--0db,0x1--24db,0x2--27db,0x3--30db,0x4--33db,0x5--36db,0x6--39db,0x7--42db
;headphone_vol,earpiece_vol: must least than 0x3b. 0x1 is a step.
;headset_mic_vol: headset mic(mic2) vol,use for phone headset mic call
;main_mic_vol: main mic(mic1) vol,use for phone main mic call
;--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[audio_para]
audio_used = 1
audio_hp_ldo = "none"
headphone_vol = 0x3b
earpiece_vol = 0x3b
cap_vol = 0x7
pa_single_vol = 0x1b
pa_double_used = 1
pa_double_vol = 0x1f
headphone_direct_used = 0
headphone_mute_used = 0
audio_pa_ctrl = port:PA18<1><default><default><0>
audio_mute_ctrl = port:PA17<1><default><default><0>
headset_mic_vol = 6
main_mic_vol = 6
Thanks in advance for any input

ezcast application install error
Hi,
I get an error message when I try to install the ezcast app on the tablet, do you have any
idea why this would happen? I would really like to cast from this device to my tv.
Also when I try to install the fulltilt poker app from fulltilt.com, the site doesn't recognize my
device as an android device. I got over it by copying the .apk file from another device but
I just thought to mention it.
Thanks,
Zohar
Hmm. I've been able to install ezcast on mine, and maybe the poker game was initially meant for windows. Your tab most likely came pre rooted so check your root permission. For ez cast contact the apps developer he is very good at replying just give all stats from about phone . good luck

I seem to have the identical tablet (specdevice . com / showspec.php ? id=5f13-c36d-ffd4-db280033c587) purchased in October. Mine was also pre-rooted, and it took me a while to figure that out too!
I do not see the messages/crashes that you see; my apps generally run with stability. I do occasionally experience surprise reboots (presumably from crashes) when I connect a USB device or am attempting to upgrade a large app via Google Play. I assume that my Google Play reboots are somehow related to running out of app disk space. Even though my tablet has 32 GB flash internally (split into two 16 GB flash devices) for some reason only 2GB was allocated to the /data partition, where apps are installed. When I found your post, I was actually looking for a solution to increase my tablet's /data partition. I read about different firmware downloads available (earlier in this thread, and in a chinagadgetsreviews blogspot -- sorry, XDA does not let me post links yet) but don't know whether they would help me with my small /data partition problem.
I'd be happy to test any particular apps on my tablet, if that would be of diagnostic use to you. And please let me know if you ever discover a solution to increase the app disk space.

Vodafone smart tab 4G

Hello,
is possible manually update my tablet to Android 5? I found this
but from ( ROM Part 1 : http://goo.gl/7pyL97 ) this site i cant download ROM
Upgrade/Update Vodafone Smart Tab 4g to 5.0 Lollipop
Upgrade/Update Vodafone Smart Tab 4g to 5.0 Lollipop
I rewrite this tutorial from forum.xda-developers.com :
The users of Vodafone Smart Tab 4g can now update their handsets to Android 5.0 Lollipop using custom ROM. The new Android 5.0 Lollipop comes with many new features :
- Up to 4x performance improvements.
- A battery saver feature which extends device use by up to 90 mins.
- It has a faster, smoother and more powerful computing experience.
- Support for 64-bit SoCs using ARM, x86, and MIPS-based cores.
- OpenGL ES 3.1 and Android extension pack brings Android to the forefront of mobile graphics putting it on par with desktop and console class performance.
- Responsive, natural motion, realistic lighting and shadows, and familiar visual elements make it easier to navigate your device.
- More intelligent ranking of notifications based on who they’re from and the type of communication. See all your notifications in one place by tapping the top of the screen.
- New devices come with encryption automatically turned on to help protect data on lost or stolen devices.
- SELinux enforcing for all applications means even better protection against vulnerabilities and malware.
- State of the art video technology with support for HEVC main profile to allow for UHD 4K 10-bit video playback, tunneled hardware video decoding to save power and improved HLS support for streaming.
- and other cool features.
Here are some more aspects that users should know before trying out the custom ROM :
- Users need to have proper back-up for their personal data on the device.
- The handset should have at least 80 percent of battery power.
- The users also need to ensure that USB Debugging is enabled on the device.
- During the installation, if the device gets stuck on booting, users can perform wipe cache partition and wipe dalvik before rebooting the device.
Tutorial
1. Download Android 5.0 Lollipop ROM for Vodafone Smart Tab 4g from link below :
The ROM File size is big, so I split the file into 3 parts :
ROM Part 1 : http://goo.gl/7pyL97
ROM Part 2 : http://goo.gl/ffHU2x
ROM Part 3 : http://goo.gl/l1zKh5
To combine 3 parts files above into 1 file just use WINRAR, then extract the files into ZIP format. If any problem with the ROM, maybe because the ROM have corrupted during the download process, you can try to re-download the ROM.
2. Install the ROM Manager on your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g . Get it from Google Play Store, then install the clockwork mod recovery. You also can use ROM Installer application from JRummy Apps Inc.(Get it from Google Play Store).
3. Connect your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g to your PC employing the USB information cable. Copy the “ROM.zip” file you downloaded to the SD memory card.
4. Restart your device in the recovery mode using ROM Manager. As soon as in Recovery Mode, go to ROM Manager and select backup/restore to back-up your information.
5. From the Recovery Menu do a total data erase (including Delvik Cache). When completed, go back to Recovery Principal Menu and choose Flash ROM from SD Card. Navigate the location you copied the ”ROM.zip” file and follow the directions for installing Android 5.0 Lollipop on your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g . As soon as the installation is over, just reboot your Vodafone Smart Tab 4g device, and here you go, you’ve just upgraded it to the new Android 5.0 Lollipop.

did you tried it? Have you got root on your Vodafone Smart Tab 4G? I found out a thread with the root file/method, but the file link is broken

I have same issue. Apps can work with data on SD Card, for example RawDroid can edit photos, save/delete files. But App2SD functionality is still not supported. It should work with Link2SD app and 2 partitions on SD card. The reason is emulated external storage in internal memory. I didn't find yet how to turn this of, or how to change it.

I've tried Link2SD, but with no success. The best i got was to use MountFolder to move the applications data to the external SD card. With this, I've recovered some good precious space (for example, Minion Rush was using 330MB that where freed).

It was awesome if we could get a rom for this tablet =)
People say it is based on Alcatel Pop 8S tablet, but I have never seen this tablet on sale, neither original roms, nothing about it.
Only alcatel website has some info about it, but not much: http://www.alcatelonetouch.com/global-en/products/tablets/pop_8s.html#.VOPaQfmsVoc
Anyone managed to remove system apps?
Titanium backup says it can't find the apks..
In Android 4.4, apps can't write the sd-card, it's a security thing. But there are apps, which enables sd write. And yes, we have source, but for ROMs we also need recovery, and a developer. But fingers crossed.

What u mean updating apps.? Updates all apps from store?
No, optimezing. Its that thing when android take an update and after that the apps is optimezed. This happening after each reboot. About the root process: if you use win 8, 8.1 you wont be able to rootbso easly because of the drivers. Try with win xp or 7. My advice: use XP. I did it with it.

Rooted A320FL, how to achieve permanently mounted adoptable storage?

Hello!
This is my first post in this forum, please be indulgent if I don't understand some stuff or abbreviations immediately.
I recently bought a Galaxy A3 2017 (SM-A320FL) to replace my old one with shattered screen and back cover. I tried the new Poco X3 for two weeks, but I wasn't satisfied with it since it was just wayyy too large for me, and also the phone speaker was unbearably loud (all people around me could follow the conversation on phone, even on lowest volume), which then led to the decision of sending it back and buying another used A3 2017 in good condition, as I was very satisfied with it, except of limited internal storage which continued to be an issue over months and years. And since the spare parts would have cost the same as the smartphone costs used at the moment, the decision was easy.
To avoid the single problem I had with the old phone, I wanted to root the phone right from the start so I could adopt the SD card as internal storage and/or change the folder some apps (especially WhatsApp) are storing their data and media in. Since the phone is factory reset and I have the other one which is still functioning, I don't have to take much care while trying things, which is great. I took yesterday evening until late night for that plan, and although a lot of threads and posts I read said that rooting the stock OS with latest update of Android 8 is not possible, I did it after some trial and error with flashing the custom recovery TWRP through Odin and then flashing SuperSU through TWRP. If a tutorial is needed, I'd happily write down how I did it, just ask.
But I still have a problem with adopting the storage. And as far as I understood, this is related to the storage encryption of Android/Samsung. Please explain if someone knows, I'd really like to understand the mechanisms that make all of this so laborious. I tried to mount the storage in TWRP when I started it first after flashing (it persists btw, as some people said it is gone and no recovery system can be found after the phone booted normally once, why?), but ran into the problem of "internal storage (0MB)". This was solved by wiping it, then I was able to mount the SD card as internal storage and the internal storage also was shown with a reasonable size in MB. I then started the phone which was obviously factory reset by the wiping. Unfortunately I couldn't see any results in the OS (does stock Android or file manager even show these changes in some way?) and also noticed the adopted storage was not anymore adopted when inspecting it in the TWRP recovery and again the internal storage was at 0MB. I then stumbled upon the app "Root Essentials" which is said to be able to adopt the storage, but needs a zip file which must be flashed by the recovery for that process. I tried it, but the flashing process does not work, as it can't find an installation of the app - my guess is, that this also is related to encrypted storage and the 0MB problem, how should the flash be able to look for something in encrypted space?
Soo, my problem now is, that I want to adopt the storage and don't know how to continue & where to begin. I also don't know if that app "Root Essentials" is any good, just read it at several places while googling so gave it a try. The phone is rooted with TWRP (0MB problem persisting) and stock OS now, and the adoptable storage per se is no must-have for me - if there is any other solution to migrate apps and more importantly their data to the SD card, please let me know, I'd be perfectly fine with that also.
Thank you!
Flo
Hey there Flo,
I am facing the same issues like you, always having to clear up space (e.g. Chrome cache) because the internal storage is not enough for the apps. And you cannot move many of the apps to the SD card, only their data. Last time I had to rermove Teams altogether because it was eating up 500+MB, and I couldn't afford it anymore as the free space dropped below 600MB.
Sooo, here are some basics I have learnt while looking for solutions.
Current custom ROMs are not an option for me as I use this phone for banking and production tasks, and I could not find any of them stable and issue-free enough to switch from the stock one.
The stock ROM is full of bloatware, especially Samsung stuff I do not need, and some others, like the Facebook app. However, you cannot extend internal storage with your SD card as Samsung does not allow this, and this is impossible with the stock ROM.
So I am stuck here, as I cannot leave the stock ROM, but I am constantly running out of space. Currently, I have rooted my device and installed TWRP, too, and I am planning to try one of the debloated stock ROMs to see if they can solve at least my problem with running out of free space on the internal storage.
In any case, what I can confirm is that you either have the stock ROM, and then you can only install apps on the internal storage, or if you want to extend your internal storage with the SD card, you'll have to choose one of the custom ROMs that allow this and wave goodbye to Knox and some other features.
I hope the above helps.
Hi!
Thanks for your detailed answer!
I didn't find a way to adopt the storage persistently, and I think at this point I'll just take your word that it won't be possible with the stock ROM. I knew that the stock ROM adopt storage option isn't able to be brought back by some adb shell commands as it was possible earlier (until 6.0 Marshmallow I think), but I thought that it maybe is possible by tricking the storage the OS sees with the mount in TWRP before the first start. Doesn't seem to work at all (for mostly unknown reasons, at least for me ).
And same for me, I don't know if the custom ROMs nowadays are better a lot, but doesn't sound like that as you described it. I flashed Resurrection Remix on my Galaxy S4 a few years ago, and although I liked the customizability and slimness, I too often ran into bugs and errors with it, which is why I abandoned the phone in the end.
However, I kind of found a fix I can live with on the SM-A320FL: I downloaded Link2SD from Playstore and also upgraded to the plus version, which is reasonably priced. This enables to also store app data on the SD card. I tried it with the 64GB SD card I had rolling around, partitioned it with MiniTool Partition Wizard following this guide to conform Link2SD requirements, and it worked perfectly. I also uninstalled all sorts of bloatware, and as far as i saw the shift to external storage of the apps I tried works fine. All data, including app, cache and app data is moved (and/or linked, not sure) to the ext2 partition on the SD card (which is shown to be a broken partition in Android storage settings btw, but that's fine). If any, only <1KB of file size per app remains in internal storage, which seems great!
I am currently waiting for my ordered 256GB SD card (U3, A2) to arrive next week, then I will do the full port from the old to the new A3 and I'll see how WhatsApp and Spotify behave being stored in external storage. Hopefully Link2SD is able to shift them, especially WhatsApp, since that was the main factor in cluttering the internal storage very fast and efficient.
If the Link2SD doesn't work for WhatsApp media, I'll give FolderMount a try, the direct mount then seems to work for many.
Since you mentioned it: What are the great features of Knox? The secure folder? Data encryption by screen lock? I can't remember using Knox features knowingly in the past three years. Is Knox not already blown by flashing a custom recovery?
Thanks for your help!
Flo
The internal storage data partition not mounting in TWRP is due to the partition being encypted when Android is booted, but also due to quota being enabled and latest version of TWRP for this phone (3.2.3-0 AFAIK) being unable to mount this. Fix for this is to flash a zip from Zackptg5 which disables both these options. See https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...y-a3-sm-a320f-fl-y-2017.3562302/post-79260952 for full details
I see that OrangeFox is available now (https://orangefox.download/device/a3y17lte), so maybe this is able to mount without these problems, I am going to flash this soon so I will let you know!
FYI I am using H-ROM by Astrako. Very close to stock (it is a port from the A7) and seems to work well. VoWiFI is working in this ROM which was essential for me.

Did “orange fox” work?

Yes, with OrangeFox I didn't need to flash the zip file from Zackptg5 which removes quota. I didn't get on with the latest H-ROM 6.0 (too many niggles, particularly ambient light sensor doesn't work so no adaptive brightness; fingerprint scanner doesn't work in apps; video call doesn't work in WhatsApp), but OrangeFox worked really well, definitely recommend it. Sorry for not remembering to come back and update sooner!

Thank you
Which rom do you use and recommend?
Or can orange fox be used with the stock rom?
Doing this on behalf on a friend who is struggling with storage issues, been years since I’ve touched android

Currently I use H-ROM 2.0 (https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...7-port-v2-0-pie-oneui-64-bits-treble.3940532/) which works well. Only two main niggles that I might change back to stock - video doesn't work in WhatsApp (but is OK in WhatsApp Business) and some VoWiFi calls have echo, but this might just be normal for VoWiFi, not had echo on normal cell network calls. Stock ROM is now available with Android 8 (Oreo) so when I have time I was intending to try that again, maybe with debloat to remove some of the stock apps.
I would recommend OrangeFox, and although I started with TWRP and flashed this over the top, I think you should be OK to just flash this straight from Odin. TWRP would only flash in old version of Odin, I would guess OrangeFox maybe would be the same. Flash in AP using older version Odin3 v3.12.10. Untick auto reboot, when complete power off with vol down + power, then force to recovery using volume up, home and power

just to clarify I could use Orange fox with stock rom and enable adopted storage? So I can use SD for apps when necessary.
I did get adopted storage working of sorts, but certain screens were missing from storage in the setting menu (I think Samsung didn't include or removed these as the phone was not intended to work with Adopted Storage), so it would crash when trying to perform certain actions. I can't actually remember now if you could move apps to the Adopted Storage using the standard system menus, it was so flakey that I stopped using that and switched to using Link2SD (which I had already used before so had a Plus license for) and this does exactly what I needed. These are the steps I used to get Link2SD working: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/app-1-6-link2sd.919326/post-82757807. I don't think you need the Plus version, but it doesn't cost much, removes the ads and lets you move a few more files. Hope that helps
