Is it possible to add a working VPN on the firestick? I was going to try IPvanish for a month until I noticed that once you sign up and pay for that month you are tied in for a longer period and funds auto deducted. I just want a pay as you go sort of thing if it's not free of course.
I want to be able to use all my addons on Kodi not just a few due to the ip limitations. :good:
I guess, to use VPN on Fire TV or Fire TV Stick, it must be rooted. Smart DNSes like Smart DNS Proxy can be used to access geo restricted content.
Can the new fire sticks with the latest software update still be rooted ? I read somewhere that currently the only way to root the Fire TV Stick is to directly manipulate the file system by soldering leads to the 8GB storage chip. I've not heard of Smart DNSes or DNS Proxy so I'll look into that now. Is it straight forward to setup and will it allow me to use the USB stick aboard and still get access to geo restricted content ?
As far as I know there is no easy way to root the Fire TV Stick.
Yes, DNSes like Smart DNS Proxy is very easy to set up and can be used from anywhere in the world to access geo restricted content.
Maybe once you subscribe, you can also push your referral link on other people, friends and family members whenever the topic comes up to try to earn further commissions and "increase your bank account."
https://www.smartdnsproxy.com/Affiliates
You can alter the provided link if you don't want to be used as "a referral."
There are lots of other competing services out there, not just ones that use Amway style marketing.
Maybe the link spam wouldn't have rubbed me the wrong way if gopichandpai had been a little more honest in the multiple threads he linked using his affiliate ID... But no such transparency of motives appeared.
Such is the way of the world

Well, the idea is to $ earned from referral(as well as from my pocket) to donate the amazing developers here.
It wouldn't matter to me if you were using the proceeds to build a worldwide kitten extermination machine. My concern was that you were /are promoting a company not because they may provide a better product or service, but because they give you money. You should mention that you are biased and that your link is a referral when you publish that in a message.

I'm new into the WP7/Mobile modding scene, (just left the X360 and Halo Scene). I made an account on AppHub, only to find out you need to be 18, and my school didn't partake in DreamSpark. I have a few apps i am really keen to debug on my phone, but i wasn't sure of an eta or any developments in running homebrew code on my WP7 (HTC HD7).
If anybody knows of any developments or even links, i would be very greatful. Thanks, Alex.

It would have to be the same as my xbox live, windows live and apphub account details. So that also isn't an option
Just start a new account. They ask for your xbox credentials, etc, but it isn't necessary to give them.

This is how I get dreamspark:
http://www.journeyed.com/item/Microsoft/DreamSpark/11111726
Buy the dreamspark product at journeyed (its free, no credit card required). You will have to send them some sort of identification and academic verification (class schedule, id, etc). You can read on their site about the verification process/requirements.
Once you're verified you will be emailed with further instructions. Works great! And journeyed is legit, I've bought lots of stuff from there before.

There is a plan on T-mobile that allows you to pay for the services you need. You should try that. Pay for the services you require. It is not that difficult. I am not a big fan of screwing current subscribers. Do you pass all your bills to your neighbors?

What vpn works for you? I tried several but was unable to connect ..
It works for me, but only if I use 3G/4G. Doesn't work with LTE for some reason.
I use this app and my own personal VPN and it works just fine. I've used Hotspot Shield VPN too with no problems.

T-Mobile has plenty of well compensated attorneys to defend their profits, they certainly don't need you to do it. There's no grand, self-righteous social statement or posturing to be made over the act of tethering with a cell phone. Choose your causes wisely.

 Why? What are you going to do about it? Too many kids believe that if a theft is undetected, in this case bandwidth from paying customers, it is not stealing. They would be wrong.
This is not about defending a carrier, but how to conduct yourself as a man. A man pays for the things he wants. He does not steal it. You have to give the entitlement generation a hand. They will use any justification for their actions while fulfilling their selfish agenda. They are very creative while doing so.
I run Jovy's roms and appreciate his contributions as much as anyone, so this is not a shot at him.
I am surprised XDA allows these hacks based on the rules they claim to enforce.
Rule 6
We do not accept warez nor do we permit any member to request, promote or describe ways in which Warez, cracks, serial codes or other means of avoiding payment, can be obtained.
People avoiding payment to their chosen carrier (the developer of the service) for the services they desire because they are too lazy and greedy to pay for the things they want need to work a little harder, make a little more money, and pay for their "wants" instead of passing the buck to the people that do things the right way.

I hear what you're saying, but I think you would be hard-pressed to empirically show non-native tethering use as a theft that costs you, the purportedly honest consumer, money. In some instances your point does have merit, but someone choosing to watch their Will It Blend videos on a computer, using the same allotment of data they otherwise have provided to them by their carrier, isn't quite a theft from you, which is essentially your point. If T-Mobile feels they're being violated, rest assured they'll put a stop to it post-haste.
Furthermore this topic has been discussed ad nauseum on this forum for as long as I can remember.
I agree, it is an old debate. It is what it is. My main point is many people believe it is fine to steal if they are not busted. Taking things they have not paid for is stealing. Thank you for your reply.
Today, Samsung announced a new Kindle for Samsung app through their Samsung Apps Store. Rather than trying to rewrite their blog post (http://global.samsungtomorrow.com/?p=35871), i'll just copy from their summary:
- Samsung and Amazon agreed to launch ‘Kindle for Samsung’, a custom-built eBook service offering millions of best-selling books, newspapers and magazines on readers’ mobile devices including over 500,000 exclusive titles.
- Samsung and Amazon will also launch Samsung Book Deals, a service providing 12 free eBooks a year to all Kindle for Samsung Galaxy smartphone and tablet users. (Basically, they let you choose one of four books to get for free every month).
I already installed the app. It looks better than the official Kindle app in my opinion. And the first 4 free books to choose from are already up.

What con are you talking about? Samsung is offering books for free. Books that you would otherwise need to pay for.
And contrary to what you posted, the Apocalypse Z book is not free. I went to the link you suggested. Doesn't look legit or legal. I searched for some other books that I know are not free (The Goldfinch, Hunger Games, LOTR). Guess what? They all came up as 'free' with a 'download now' button next to them. But not before the download link took me to two (yes, two) other sites (usearchmedia(.)com and mediasuns(.)com). And of course, there was the obligatory disclaimer at the bottom of the ebook-share site:
"DISCLAIMER: None of the files shown here are actually hosted or transmitted by this server. The links are provided solely by this sites users. The administrator of this site cannot be held responsible for what its users post, or any other actions of its users. Why would you criticize Samsung for providing free LEGAL books, call it a con, and then point users to some crap illegal file-sharing site?

Yes, there's a lot of free stuff for Android. Still, I like where Samsung is going. They are really pushing hard to separate themselves from Google, Amazon, and all the other manufacturers. If that means giving me free stuff, like Milk and Kindle for Amazon, then i'm all for it.

In this case I was conned, but more often than not it is the reverse. Many times I see these online book publishers selling public domain work which I have downloaded freely from Project Gutenberg. So in general I am right, I just chose a bad example. I download books only from Project Gutenberg but in an attempt to demonstrate my point here I just made a quick Internet search on the one title.
My recommendation is still to download a free e-book reader and to freely down free public domain books.

Reading is free. It's the books that sometimes cost money.
Not all of the books I want to read are public domain. I don't mind paying for decent books. I'm not going to spend $20 on an ebook, but I don't mind spending a few dollars. I bought Hugh Howey's 'Silo' series for like $3 and it was worth every penny. On the other hand, I went out and bought 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy' for $12 because all my friends swore by it, but I couldn't get past the first 50 pages. Just not my writing/reading style. Wish I could return it. lol
80% of my ebooks and audiobooks I get from the library anyway. I just finished the Dune audiobook last week, and now am reading the Dune Messiah ebook. I got both from the library via Overdrive.
I must say reading books should be free. Thanks for correcting it. I can see you're a bookworm and this freebies are for readers like you. Enjoy the freebies

I know what you were trying to say. I seek out freebies every chance I can get too. I hardly ever turn down a free book, even if it's something I don't think i'll read. I got two free Audible audiobook credits that I am trying to decide what to use on (I was originally going to go with LOTR, but I only have two credits and don't want to have to pay for the third book.) I recently got 'Heart of Darkness' and 'A Princess of Mars' cause they were free on Amazon (along with the Audible audiobook free as well).
I live by two rules. Never look a gift horse in the mouth. And never turn down a free book.

You're not asking for a RAT that the user knows it's existence, what you are asking for is a hacking tool, unless it's made for a company so its monitor its (WORK DEVICES) like work computers to make sure the employees are not on Facebook and are actually working, what you're asking for is pretty much illegal and against the law specially that it's a personal device. spying on call logs is a federal felony If you want to "purchase a RAT" for hacking which is pretty much what you are asking for, XDA is not the place for that.

well maybe you got me wrong, its for small company of mine. i provide local small package shipping solution. i have 5 employees who handle delivery via cycle. they pickup packages and get senders information and receivers information, since we are local company we dont take much information from our clients. we do not ask our clients whats inside the package, but when the receiver picks the package we take 2 pictures. 1 picture of receiver and 1 picture of receivers photo identity card. but this isnt the reason for the software i require.
My company also provides a special "emergency pickup" service when the client needs fast delivery. they directly call one of my employees and they take care of everything and take cash money from clients and bring it to company house.
but i have a huge sales drop for last 2 months but my employees are working same as before. i need to track this sales, then i came up with an idea of having a app which can track but my employees wont know what i am tracking, they will know that i am tracking them.
I'm Curious....I have a Fire TV with Kodi and love it. Thinking of getting another…BUT can/will Amazon send out an update that will stop a Kodi from functioning on a Fire TV Box?? Don't want to waste money on another if it's destined to fail.
Thanks
I'm curious about this as well. It kind of boggles my mind that a simple exploit can give you access to everything.
If you are not rooted, Amazon can do whatever they want with firmware updates. It is their ecosystem. However, as long as they allow sideloaded applications (which if they want development of apps, they have to allow) Kodi can continue to be sideloaded.
That said, what "exploit" is the previous poster referring to?
Yes they can.. Would they. highly unlikely..
Lots of people asking this question now that kodi has been removed from app store. I actually understand amazon removing the app (don't like it) but it makes sense. They do after all, sell media and having that app in their store is a little like Starbucks advertising the special deals Dunkin Donuts is currently offering. But most people who know better than I do don't think you need to worry about kodi no longer working.
Btw--Ive never been clear about the rules regarding android. Its basically Linux which has always been open source. From what I gather that means you can modify it however you like but you need to leave it open. The word "open" must be interpreted very liberally because when you look at AFTV it runs android but it seems pretty well locked down to me. But I can't really comment on it. If anyone can share some good info on the legal reasons behind it, please do so.
It seems to me the vast innovation here was started by the public. And technology in general is a government subsidized industry. The pentagon uses tax dollars usually in the name of "security" and over decades develop things that go from very undesirable even by big business then get polished up and made into consumer products. Often times its just handed over to big business. This isn't really a commentary on capitalism. Im just taking a look at how we get from the public funding and/or the public actively developing tech to the point where people here can't even mess around with a product they paid for? I don't know that it makes sense but you certainly can argue its profoundly unfair.
Thank you for all the answers and im sorry for what I have caused!!! I love the Fire TV... I don't personally care if its Android 4, 4.4 etc.. As long as it works for Kodi im happy!
Ok everyone,

As you all can see almost all posts have been removed. The OP asked a rather simple question. It wasn't an open invitation to rant and rave about assorted topics ranging from Kodi to your displeasure with xda-developers.com and what you think this website is personally not doing for you. In addition to all kinds of other off-topic nonsense. Also, it's still a mystery why some people can't have a discussion without it turning into personal attacks and flaming. Some of the posts removed were downright awful and disgusting.

I've posted a response here after the fact - that mentioned again, that the moderators here are also cleaning any evidence of a political standing against the crisis facilitated by Amazons move, to retract the most frequently used open source media player from their store and engaging in a smear campaign against "ownership of device" interests. Which translates to - users rights to use a file player on a device they own. And in this process harmed my standing more than any of the slanderous comments that spiraled out of control here before.
The response got deleted subsequently, without any indication or even a comment as to why.
The political statement, I'd like to repeat, was -
Amazon crossed a line here. The company violated the trust relationship they had established in regards to their early adopters. They used their monopoly on distribution within their device infrastructure to remove a legal competitor and started a public smear campaign against him, based on a lie. Use and even heavily (ab)use the Fire TV you have already bought, if you have to, but stop recommending it to your peers and parents. There are cheaper, more up to date, more potent TV boxes on the horizon ( http://goo.gl/z1n9fj ), from companies that arent primarily interested in making this a fight about licensing and subscription models, chained to the hardware itself. Following a standing, where no user should be allowed to use a media player on a device they have bought from them anymore.
Amazons anti competitive move came unprovoked and is aimed at removing common ground between users of their product and company interests. They changed their position, it is time to change yours.
Background information can be found here: http://www.aftvnews.com/amazon-apps...piracy-while-google-play-store-approves-kodi/
Please do not censor political speech. The original post had more room for positional nuance and argumental flashing out of positions, and frankly was a better posting - this one is more concise.
When people are reduced to a state of waiting and worrying - structurally this cant be accepted as normal.
https://kateheddleston.com/blog/how-our-engineering-environments-are-killing-diversity-introduction
@harlekinrains: return your device and go away if you hate it that much
That way nothing could be learned from it. You dont hate the product. You hate the entity that killed of the common ground principle and mounted a campaign against the normal use of open source video player software on their device.
This is a pivotal moment. We have to be able to talk about it.
Oh get off it. This is not a pivotal moment for anything. You are straight up delusional.
You are wrong. I'll explain again.
The company just killed off the only remaining public sign, that they honor the silent agreement, that users have to be able to use video player software on the device, by banning the most commonly used open source media center from their entire distrubution infrastructure. And moreso - openly declaring it illegal, on their grounds, without giving any explanations.
Remember there is no independent judicial system to aid the consumer in the case of this being anti competitive behavior.
In technology and business relations, we refer to those important public facing signs as "canaries in the colemine". Killing them is considered to be an aggressive act, because you are eliminating the signs of there being a common interest you, as the company, care to honor as well.
Thats what activates people like me.
Because the issue we suddenly are facing is, that we do not get any more public indications of policy changes, before they can go into effect.
If you proclaim "Amazon will still honor other agreements, because they really have to...." you are proclaiming this, totally blind and only out of trust. This is what characterizes a dependency.
Remember - Amazon themselves didnt allow for Kodi to be installed on the Fire TV through their infrastructure. This already wasnt normal as far as Android distribution agreements are concerned. What they did now is to publicly position themselves against it (the most commonly used open source media player software out there).
Now you get these threads popping up with people being more and more uncertain, because they are confronted with conflicting proposals what they should be allowed to use on hardware they bought. This is a new and recent development, which is why we have to talk about it now.
And the way to address it, is not to calm them down - but to explain to them, that all bets are off, and we simply dont know anymore if, or when Amazon will retaliate further.
Because there is no public sign of mutual recognition left and their last move already was unprecedented, and hostile - and was executed without any prior provocation.
You can see that something is very "off", by the fact that even the companies "product bloggers" are taking an open stance against this move.
It is my opinion that whoever removed the Kodi app didn't understand the purpose. And Amazon will go the way of reinstating it (vs. removing every other media app that can play an internet link) once there is enough feedback and it gets the attention of a manager somewhere.
It is also my opinion that you are delusional in the depth of your concern over this app removal and the FireTV in general. There are far more concerning issues in life to be angry about. A media streaming device is not worth your emotions. Which is why this is the most I have ever, and will ever write about this. I am here to help contribute by answering questions and learn from the developers. You made a great contribution in one of your posts. You are obviously capable. Stick to that and check your soapbox at the door.
There are lots of other hardware options out there to put Kodi on, there always will be. There are many other media center applications on the Amazon app store. Nothing is "pivotal" about Kodi not being listed now. I put my money where I want. No one is forcing me to do anything. So no, I am not wrong. Because it is my opinion and choice. Nothing you can say will change my opinion on this. Especially coming from you.
Lastly, I assume this will all get deleted again and I hope so. This has nothing to do with the question from the OP. Kodi was never even a compatible app for the FireTV in the App Store. It always had to be sideloaded. So Amazon has changed nothing regarding the usage on the FireTV. And they won't be doing anything further in the future to stop it from being sideloaded either.
Edit: Don't reply to me. I am not going to respond to you. You keep editing your prior post over and over. You are obviously too emotional about this topic and I don't engage with people that are crazy.
You might be right.
But I dont care about opinions (*hm* double entendre.. ), I need coverage. And we are starting to get it right now.
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/06/17/bezos_bozos_swing_ban_hammer_at_media_player/
@aftvnews, we still might need you later. Start thinking allegiances.
I take internet/consumer rights VERY seriously but its hard to get worked up here. I was sort of annoyed by the abrupt tone of the note amazon sent to team kodi but this changes almost nothing for aftv. Maybe some tablet or fire phone users are upset?
Imho this is team kodi's fight. And i would support them if they choose to better educate amazon.
