WP7 Development pointers? - Windows Phone 7 Development and Hacking

I'm new into the WP7/Mobile modding scene, (just left the X360 and Halo Scene). I made an account on AppHub, only to find out you need to be 18, and my school didn't partake in DreamSpark. I have a few apps i am really keen to debug on my phone, but i wasn't sure of an eta or any developments in running homebrew code on my WP7 (HTC HD7).
If anybody knows of any developments or even links, i would be very greatful. Thanks, Alex.
MOD Edit: Changed title better suited for the question

You could always shell out the full $99 for a normal developer account...

It would have to be the same as my xbox live, windows live and apphub account details. So that also isn't an option

Just start a new account. They ask for your xbox credentials, etc, but it isn't necessary to give them.

This is how I get dreamspark:
http://www.journeyed.com/item/Microsoft/DreamSpark/11111726
Buy the dreamspark product at journeyed (its free, no credit card required). You will have to send them some sort of identification and academic verification (class schedule, id, etc). You can read on their site about the verification process/requirements.
Once you're verified you will be emailed with further instructions. Works great! And journeyed is legit, I've bought lots of stuff from there before.

Marketplace will be the only way to get apps on Windows Phone 7 Series?

I've just found this article, and was not happy to read it:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/15/confirmed-marketplace-will-be-the-only-way-to-get-apps-on-windo/
This left me very disappointed
Given that we pretty much knew that WP7 wasn't going to be backward compatible software-wise, this one is not that big of a deal. You wouldn't be able to run the old apps anyway. By forcing apps through the marketplace, Microsoft does a clean cut from the old and ugly apps.
What's this got to do with old apps? If you want to install a hack you first need to submit it to Marketplace? Oh! I forgot there's no hacks on WP7....

You will still be able to load apps on to the device from Visual Studios. It will just require giving out the source to do it. So hacks and such that people don't want to go through marketplace will be able to distribute there code as long as they don't care that everyone will beable to see the source.
Update: Microsoft wanted us to clarify that enterprise customers will be able to deploy apps to employees outside the consumer-facing Marketplace -- details on that will be released in the future.

Hmmmm. Interesting. Sounds like something that might be exploited by a jail-break procedure.
I think you just have to accept that WP7 never will be "hacker friendly". I'm starting to wonder if there would have been less whining over the WP7 platform if they'd branded it something completely different, like "Splonge" or "Zaarkoft", since its got virtually nothing to do with WP6.5. The community's expectations would maybe been more realistic.
What's sad is of course that the 6.5 series probably won't be developed further and few or no new devices with better hardware will come with 6.5 (or 6.6 or whatver), but I guess there always is ... Android? Or Openmoko or whatever it's called.

Idiocracy of the Mobile World
It seems everything is so dumbed these days...making things is a easier to do is fine but damn. For me I hear windows mobile I think mini pc but now it seems things as a whole are headed towards playskool sh!+ for adults. I blame newbies that dont/cant read manuals & use commn sense (u won a lottery u neva heard & u paying money to receive the winnings lol). I also blame the pos companies/people that push malware/spyware/phishing. Windows customization is gift for the tech savy but a curse for impatient eye candy lovers.

As I see the Marketplace evolving I must state I've never seen so many new and ugly $1-apps. I'd better pay $20 for a well-designed with great UI and functionality or donate something to a as great freeware app than sponsor those marketplace whores that even don't offer a trial.
This is bad for small time developers, people like me (I'm a computer science student) who would never be able to pay the fees to put an app on the market.
At least with Android I can distribute APKs how I like and people can download and install.

I'm not sure what your logic is here. There's no reason to want sideloading unless you want to sideload winmo6 apps?
How about wanting to sideload applications MS doesn't want to compete with or otherwise decides is unsuitable for my delicate sensibilities? How about wanting to sideload content made by indies that can't afford MS's regulatory scheme? How about wanting to sideload content so I can get it direct from my friendly neighborhood developer, with all the incumbent benefits and freedoms thereof instead of submitting myself to the whims of a markplace's DRM mechanisms?
Of course, I'm not exactly blown away by the news. Anyone with half a brain knew once the Zunies were in charge of WinMo this was the inevitable result.

Flawed, I know. For those of us that still want a "hacker friendly" phone, we still got WP6.5 and competing platforms.

I agree, that's a valid point. I don't even think we were in the dark from the first day of WP7s' introduction, before this little confirmation. The moment they sent their hipster zunies out to explain how great it was, at least half of us knew they were using Apple's playbook.
I began to come to terms with migrating to android on day 1, and the stench of betrayal has mostly passed on.

BizSpark FAQ for Phone 7 Developers: MS Products, Azure, etc.

I've been seeing a lot more interest lately from the XDA community regarding Azure and figure it is worth starting a thread to try to answer some basic questions.
First, I'll be up front with everyone...BizSpark is my day job, I work for Microsoft and technology evangelism is my passion. I can think of few things more exciting than what the Cloud is going to bring to the market through mobile device in the next few years. We know who's going to be on the front lines of driving this innovation: you are. So let's answer those questions:
How does someone get Azure for free through BizSpark?
Sign up for a BizSpark account hereThis is the updated site that offers information: BizSpark Azure.
Deal is, you sign up for the introductory offer (free), set your subscription to (not “Auto Renew”), and then after 16 months sign up for the BizSpark Azure (Again, free) for the end of your agreement.
Who qualifies?
Yes, there are qualifications, but pretty much anyone who cares enough about software development to be reading this sub-forumon XDA will qualify. If you are actively developing software, you aren't developing this project for a publicly traded company, your project/startup is less than three years old and is making less than US $1M annually, you qualify. That simple.
What other products can I get?
BizSpark pretty much gives you a premier MSDN account for three years, so if it is on MSDN, you can use it. Dfinitly everything you car about: Visual Studio, all of the Expressions products, etc.
Many products have stipulations that they be used for development purposes only, but Azure, Server, SQL, etc can be used in production, meaning you can go live, host your product and try to make some money with it.
Can I get a free AppHub developer account, too?
No, but there's always hope...

Why is Microsoft giving their stuff away for free?
Because there should be no excuses for startup developers to not have access to the best software development tools on the planet.
If you have any questions, feel free to PM me or send me an email through the board.
I thought this could be a cool idea so I applied, and got denied about 6 hours later. The email told me I do not qualify and to look into Dreamspark or a MSDN account.

let me try and see...
I applied, but...my company is older than three years, but has only done software dev for one year. Hopefully I'll be allowed in, but not holding my breath. Might actually still be cheaper to create a new company and apply via that

Cheers! Will do
For those weary about bizspark, it is a great thing for start ups. There are other things that come with it... not just free software. I am glad someone from MSFT is here to talk about it. You do need to be less than 3 years old and make less than a million dollars in revenue in a year -- which is always the case for most startups.

Giving it a try now. I'm hardly a "company" or "start-up", but I write software and have a couple of projects that I would like to begin working with .Net for. Also, the idea of a premier MSDN account is a nice idea. It's like high school all over again, just trying to get some acceptance .

WP7 Gamers

Hi all, with the current lack of global leaderboards, or any specific WP7 Gaming community (that I've found) I've set up WP7 Gamers.
At present, we're on Facebook and twitter (search out WP7 Gamers). A fully fledged website may follow later should interest deem it worthwhile. Also as this is done in my spare time (which I lack enough of!) - if anyone is interested in becoming an admin/mod/poster - please feel free to drop me a message!
Not wanting to upset the mod's on here, this is not run for profit! Just couldn't find what I was looking for! so set out to make it myself. Also for the dev's out there wanting to promote their titles, please feel free to send any information/screenshots/video's and I'll make sure they are shared
Hope this is ok?

Hey sHAYM4N I'm trying to message you but it's not letting me, can you send me one that I can reply to? Thx man.
If you want, I could lend you my website.
It was supposed to be a site dedicated to game news/reviews for WP7 that I started as a school project, but I couldn't find the time to continue it. If you and a small group wanted to take charge more or less, I would give you guys all the info needed to moderate the forums, and if you wanted to, you could even post news and get the front end going again - assuming people posting news were literate.
Let me know.

Cheers for that, but I may have to look at designing from scratch for what I have in mind.
I don't really want this to be another new/reviews website if it goes that way. I want to try and create something that I see as an extension to XBox Live. Something different...
Having a quick search around it appears Microsoft don't have an open API for XBox which is a real shame tbh, because there are a lot of things that could be done further which I don't think are yet being taken advantage of.
In a perfect scenario I would like to see members register for the website using their gamertag, from there they could access leaderboards, compare gamerscores, compete in challenges, whilst also being an active social forum for indie developers.
I'd also be looking for the site to be run by 5-10 people - preferably from different timezones!
If the idea took off and interest grew, challenges could turn into competitions, advertising into supporting the site etc...
When I get chance I'll mock up some designs. I'm more of a designer than a developer - so if anyone has got any advice, or want's to get on board so to speak - feel free to let me know!
For the time being there will be weekly challenges on the Facebook Page. Get the highest score by the closing time, and your gamertag/pic will be crowned on the Profile Pic.
I'll also be posting information about Indie Games, so if you want your game featured please let me know! They won't be reviewed so to speak, just information/screenshots. The idea is to provide the information, and let the community review the game.

Thank you for the support! There are 65 signatures so far. I am going to re-write the petition to make it more organized, clearer, and more convincing. If anyone has recommendations on what to include, please let me know. I will take out the criticism of the Fire Phone, and move it toward opening the Fire Phone to the opportunity for an extended life and appreciation. Also, I will add the email of the Project Manager of Amazon devices to the petition.
I've thought of giving a brief history of the phone and adding more info about HTC's successful unlock program, and the longevity of the HP TouchPad which had a similar situation in which WebOS hampered excellent hardware due to limited applications available and later became the 2nd most popular tablet of 2011 after a fire sale and bootloader unlock.

I would LOVE to have an unlocked bootloader. I don't know enough about delving into the specifics of the programming, but every single phone I've had I've unlocked and loaded something on it, even if I turned it back to stock later (MyTouch 3G comes to mind...). I don't want this phone to end up like all the other phones sitting in my drawer taking up space after a little while, I'd love to keep using this beautiful hardware for at least another year!

OpenHU Project - Continuing Mike Reid's Android Auto Head Unit App

Hi all, it appears that Mike Reid, the developer of the original FOSS Android Auto Head Unit app, has sadly passed away.
We are continuing the development in a new app, which we call the OpenHU Project. It stands for Open Head Unit.
Just want to address some one concern that some have already raised: OpenHU will continue to be fully open source under GPL, forever.
The only thing that may change is that we are trying to get permission from Mike Reid's family to relicense under GPLv2, as Mike had intended to permit those uses personally - and he obviously can't anymore.
Learn More: http://console.com.co/openhu/
Wiki: http://wiki.console.com.co/w/OpenHU
GitHub: https://github.com/iConsole/OpenHU
$10,000 Bounty Details: http://wiki.console.com.co/w/Console_Developer_Rewards
Finally - we are offering a $10,000 bounty, as the first full round of our Console Developer Rewards initiative. We had previously planned to focus on Android for x86, but Intel and Android were on troubled waters at the time... so we didn't fully launch it. In the wake of Mike's passing, we felt the best thing to do was focus on this effort.
As you may have heard, some recent changes to GMS (Google Play Services) broke Mike's app. But we are already hard at work, and you can win a portion (or all) of the $10,000 by helping us fix it!
Reserved
Reserved for future use...
Hi all, some good news, continuing from the old thread. Mike was persistently doing battle with a private Google file, libsslwrapper.so. It's part of GMS. As you can see in the source code for OpenHU, when searching for this file, Mike left several hooks for swapping in old versions, in order to A/B test.
By replacing that file with the old version (from GMS 9.0), it appears we can use OpenHU with GMS 9.2.56!
Unfortunately, this is only a partial fix, one Google could break at any time, so the bounty continues. We need to identify what broke with the latest changes.
But this is good news because we can isolate the problem to an SSL link between OpenSSL and the libsslwrapper.so file. Now, we need the community's help the most - because we don't have SSL engineers on-staff. Don't count on us to fix this, we need all-hands here.
Full instructions on how to swap libsslwrapper.so with the old version (via ADB, sans root) will be posted shortly.
How about instead of paying someone $10,000 for a future scam project you use that $10,000 to refund the backers you ripped off from your other scam you still haven't delivered on nearly 3 years later: Console OS.
You still have t-shirts and physical goods to deliver as well. You have $10,000 to throw around for this though.....
Truly a piece of work.
So this money is coming from the ConsoleOS funds? Did you know that the front page of android-x86.org calls you out as a scammer?

You did fully launch it. Twice. No one bit the first time because they knew better. You changed the submission date. Still no one bit. Oh, let me guess. It was yet another "soft launch"?
Also, where did the 10,000 dollars come from? You've said for months you've had no money to refund backers and you and your "team" had been living on less than minimum wage for a couple years now. You also said you could only afford refunds if you sold the rebranded Teclast hardware that you've announced but have provided zero details about so far. Wait...
"Similarly, we reserve the right to substitute devices, or provide refurbished devices if necessary for fulfillment."
There will be no cash. You'll give away old hardware and deduct the MSRP from the 10,000 cash promise. That's if you ever manage to give away anything at all.
I think anyone thinking about participating has to right to know explicitly where the money is coming from and please don't say "industry partners."
What's funny is your "continued development" of this project is the exact same thing you did with ConOS, grab code that someone else wrote, try to find other people to fix the issues for you, and then sell that for profit.
Intel and Android-x86 wrote Console OS' code, and now you're taking Mike Reid's code. Maybe you should stop taking other people's work and make something yourself. I mean, you have developers in Paris and a team to help you....right? Or is the extent of your "collective" coding knowledge changing names and lines on The GitHub?
But let's not kid ourselves. There is no team, no we. It's been you all along, just you.

I will respect the moderators and only focus on OpenHU in this thread. Please leave it there, thanks, this is not an appropriate place to discuss Console OS.
We did not "take" any code from Intel, it was licensed fully. Similarly, Console was working with Mike Reid up to the day he went to hospital. All this code in this project is licensed under GPL. OpenHU will remain under GPL. Period. You cannot steal GPL code if you use it under GPL.
As to the terms of CDR, we never even launched a bounty previously. The claims above that we did, are false. We halted such efforts after Intel informed us Android on IA may be halted. See the OP for a true/correct history. We will pay every penny of Console Developer Rewards, and it will be pretty darn clear if we don't.
We stated in the revision history that we are using cash only based on feedback - there will be no gadget giveaways (in this round, though as stated - future CDR rounds may use gadget rewards).
But again, this thread is for OpenHU. If you want to try and save the late Mike Reid's work, please contribute. If not, please leave.

Sorry, I'm not going to engage. We never launched Console Developer Rewards. The first planned run March 1 was halted (and never introduced) due to Intel briefing us that they were planning to make major changes to their Android FOSS support. See: http://console.com.co/thoughts-on-chips/
We never offered any developer bounties prior to this one. No developer submitted code to us previously, with an expectation of being paid. This is our first go of it, and we'll pull out our credit cards to pay for it if need be. We want Mike's hard work to continue.
This is our first actual campaign for CDR. If you want to help save Mike Reid's work, contribute to that topic. All other topics are off-topic, and moderators have stated are prohibited. Please leave it there, thanks.

No one claimed you launched a "bounty" specifically. You're playing semantics. We said you launched Console Developer Rewards, the program itself. You claimed you didn't launch the program itself fully and asuka has already posted the links that prove you did.

Liar. "The first 30-day cycle of Console Developer Rewards will run March 21 through April 20. "
Quoted from: http://console.com.co/devrewards/
Why was it pushed back? From your own update:
"We met our self-imposted timetable to post terms, but we didn't give people enough time for feedback, and to properly inform the projects we plan to support.
We're moving back the first month of Console Developer Rewards to March 21, a week from today. This will give us time to have everything in-place and do it correctly."

If you don't wanna discuss Console, fine. This project: your own page for the bounty of THIS project that YOU link to doesn't say this round is cash only. It says what I pasted, that gadgets can be substituted for cash, and the rules can change, at any time. But if you do want to use cash for THIS program (we're remaining on topic), again I ask, where is it coming from? You conveniently didn't address that at all in your reply.

This is our first go of it, and we'll pull out our credit cards to pay for it if need be. We want Mike's hard work to continue.

Ahem, asked and answered. I'm putting up the bounty money out of my own pocket.

And this would a different pocket from the one that the ConsoleOS funds went into

Hey, why don't you be a man and take that same $10,000 to refund the couple thousand Kickstarter backers you shafted?
Or better yet, take that $10,000 and deliver the physical rewards you promised. Remember this post you made on May 13?: https://twitter.com/iConsole/status/731224776815992832
"Finally slaying spam demons is just one of the things we've checked off this week. Next up, perk shipments for #ConsoleOS. Then new stuff!"
That's almost 2 months ago. You still need to fulfill your campaign obligations before beginning another vaporware project of yours.

PM me with your Kickstarter ID and I will investigate. Our last update made clear that our pivot to hardware will extend refund options to KS backers - or give them a credit towards our upcoming hardware.
We've committed to refunding people on Console OS. What more do you want?

Out your own pocket...."if need be". So you post a 10,000 dollar bounty and only to reveal after being asked that you don't actually have it and will maybe have to put it on a credit card?

I don't see the point of the animus here. If Console can't come up with the money over the next 90 days, I'm personally promising to pull it off a credit card and back it myself.
That's not Kickstarter backer money, and we've offered to refund backers in our June 1 update. Edit: See our June 1 update if you are a backer - https://www.kickstarter.com/project...t-android-remastered-for-the-pc/posts/1592356
No KS funds from Console OS are being used here, period.
Please respect moderators wishes that discussion related to Console OS end with that. This is totally derailing the effort to salvage Mike's app... and if you think you can do better, please do.

Questions about the money are on topic. Now here is the problem. The problem is you're asking people to do work with zero guarantee of payment. You've just admitted you don't have the money. They're supposed to go off your promise, given your history? Again, your own page says you don't have to give them any money at all. You can substitute hardware at any time.

Sorry. I'm trying to save this app. I will keep trying. If you don't consider it a trustworthy offer, that's up to you. I'm putting a personal guarantee on payment for code submitted within the time period stated on the CDR page for OpenHU (June 24 to August 31). Edit: Provided it actually fixes the issue - I hope the terms of the bounty are pretty clear.
We did have to put some legal terms in there, this is being run by a company. It is to a degree, arbitrary. It's FOSS code, and we are committing to paying in cash for this initial round. The gadget legalese was written prior. This round will be paid in cash.
If you have a better idea for reviving Mike Reid's app - please provide it. I welcome a better effort.
