red triangle when update - One (M8) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys!
i'm new at this
after installing the correct right recovery into my htc one 8
when i try to update it starts fine but after few second a red triangle appear and i cant get in my phone.
i use the power button and volume up key together to rebooted and it did
my problem is that i can not update ! any solution ?
thanjks, eli

When you see red triangle, hold volume up & tap power button once.
It will boot to recovery and tell you what the errors are.
Most likely wrong stock recovery or some files are non-stock.
It's best to restore a non-rooted backup then do the update.

You don't have to drain the battery to get to hboot. Simply press and hold both power button & volume up button then the screen turn black (turn off), release both button and immediately press and hold volume down button only.
Get the 4.19.707.2 backup in my thread : http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help/tutorial-how-to-stock-stock-twrp-t3086860
then install the 4.19.707.2 stock recovery and do the OTA again.
Anything you don't understand, you can ask in there.

What you did is step 1.
and there are 14 steps explained in post #1.
I don't know how to help you when you don't read / can't follow all the steps.
I tell you the basic thing :
install TWRP
restore TWRP backup
install stock recovery
reboot and do OTA
done

That means the transfer was not correctly done (step 7)
You need to transfer the 4.19.707.2 folder NOT 4.19.707.2_ckpv5 folder

Solution: Stuck on HTC screen before recovery mode when trying to root using guide

I have tried everywhere to find a solution to this problem. Google searched many hours revealved that there are quite a handful of people that has the same problem and no one was able to give them any strong help. People were told to run RUU rom, unbrick the usb or were just told their device is bricked.
I really want t rooted device so I tried and searched many hours and with trial and error, I rooted my device.
This short guide is meant for people that has the exact same problem.
Hope it will help at least one person!
The problem was the phone getting stuck at the HTC logo before when trying to get to the screen with a phone and a warning triangle( i.e just before recovery mode) on step 7 of the "Guide to root using Windows, MAC OS X and Linux" in the "[TUT]Complete upgrading guide(root, unroot, flashing ROM & updates) " guide.
Just to make sure you guys had the exact same problem I did, I originally had a bootloader 0.75 before doing any of the steps and after running step 1 in the r5 root files, it went to version 0.8.00
Steps:
1. Go find the guide posted by Paul. Can't post outside link here. Just google it.
2. Download the files for bootloader 0.8.00 which should be the r6 root files.
3. Now extract to your C drive on your pc like you did for the r5 root files. then with your desire on the fastloader screen, connect to pc via usb and in the r6 root files, run the step 1.
4. Now attempt to go to the screen with a phone and a warning triangle which you previously couldn't. you need to get to this screen to run your step 2 on the r5 root files.
You should now be at the recovery screen!!! YAAAA!!
Now just follow the rest of "[TUT]Complete upgrading guide(root, unroot, flashing ROM & updates) " guide.
Hope it helps!! Any questions I would help out if I can!

hi mate,
I have exactly your problem: can't acces recovery - htc logo screen appear
I tried everything and didn't work.
I tried as you said with Paul R6 first step and when I want to get into recovery the logo screen just appear
just can't find a solution to bring it back.............
Not sure how it applies to this, but I had the same problem. But I cleared the dalvik cache and the user data area using the recovery menu. Then it booted fine into my custom ROM.

Which bootloader version you on now?
I am still only an noob in rooting but it worked for me... let me think what else I did...
Another question, are you on Orange as well? Starting to wonder if it's an Orange thing. Other people's root is pretty straight forward
Don't worry too much if it doesnt work out. The last resort is to do an RUU on the phone, I think. I don't think it's possible to brick an android phone.

The problem was that we couldn't even get into the recovery menu.
Not a problem with Orange users as mine was straight forward. Have you's tried this? Easier method of rooting.

If you are orange and now have hboot 0.8 then you must have the exact same condition I had.
Try connecting your phone to the pc again on the fastboot screen and try to run the "step1-windows" in the r6-desire-root-alt folder again.
Keep on trying!! Dont give up!!

# Navigate to the 'BOOTLOADER' and then 'RECOVERY' option on the menu, using the volume buttons to move and the power button to select.
# When a black screen appears with a red triangle, press and hold 'Volume Up' then tap 'Power'.
# Your device should now be at the 'recovery' screen. Select the 'wipe data/factory reset' option, then select the option to 'Apply sdcard:update.zip'. This will take a little while, so go make a nice cup of tea. When the flash has finished, reboot, and you are DONE! smile.gif

[Q] Can't root and can't recovey

Hy,
I have a problem with my Desire.
A few week's ago the phone just start restarting when i use the internet browser, and get stuck when try to restart. I have to get out the battery and restart it.
I was to the place from where i bought and they told make me an HW reset. I make it right there, and surprise after 2 days it has the same problem without installing any software.
I try to make an root with unrevoked but on the second reboot the phone stuck in the boot screen. The unrevoked app "wait for reboot". I had to get out the battery.
I try a few more times but without success. In one of the times when i tried i got from app "Internal error: failed to unlock NAND flash".
My phone is still S-ON. After all of this I tried an recovery but i got a black screen with a red triangle and an exclamation icon.
What a should do?
Thank you!
Technical info:

To get to the alternate recovery;
First go to Normal recovery (Red Triangle) by maintaining Vol Down + Power
and then press Vol Up + Power
This will bring you to another recovery menu where you can : Reboot , Flash from sd , Wipe Data/factory ,Wipe Cache
This will allow you to recover/flash.
When I pressed Vol Up + Power I got
"E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command" It's normal?
and a menu with:
Reboot system now
Applay sdcard:update.zip
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
If I press "Wipe data/factory reset" I get the following:
7 x No
1 x Yes -- delete all user data
3 x No
It's normal?
Thank you!
yes, it's a normal menu. Exactly like I told you.
The apply SDcard Update.zip, is assumed to be the flash update you downloaded recently.
Thank you!
Can you told me why I can't root my phone.
In the first post I attached a print screen with the feedback from the method flash with AlphaRev.
Thank you!
That's S-Off not rooting

The print screen what you have post in the first post is the procedure of S-OFF your phone...
S-OFF is used to resize nand partitions, not for flashing a room... For roms like DATA2SD, DATA2EXT, DATA2WE you don't need to be S-OFF!
READ THIS BEFORE POST:
ROOT TUT here you will find all the information - how to root and flash a rom!
I will retake this post for not starting another one.
Like I said in the first post:
"A few week's ago the phone just start restarting when i use the internet browser, and get stuck when try to restart. I have to get out the battery and restart it.
I was to the place from where i bought and they told make me an HW reset. I make it right there, and surprise after 2 days it has the same problem without installing any software."
I finally root my phone an I installed GingerVillain 2.0, and I have the same problem. .
Another thing that I observed it's that when the phone restarts it tries to boot, it restarts again (not all the time makes a second restart).
Thank you!

Yes, first take out the battery and put it back in. That will make sure the phone is completely off.
Now, hold the volume down button down and whilst holding it down hold the power on button until you see the recovery environment boot up. It is a little menu.
Please confirm if you can boot into recovery.
Yes I can go to bootloader.
I have old version ClockworkMod Recovery - 2.5.*.*
I want to upgrade ClockworkMod Recovery to 3.2.0.0 to flash new rom 2.3
To upgrade clovlworkmod recovery I need to do this steps:
Installation:
1.Power off your DHD
2.Put it in bootloader mode; Power+Vol down and select Fastboot from menu.
3.Plug-in the USB cable.
4.Double click on install-recovery-windows.bat if you're using windows, execute install-recovery-linux.sh if you're on linux or install-recovery-mac.sh if MacOSX.
5.Done! The device will be automatically rebooted.
6.If you want to thank me, click the Thanks button.
?
Or to upgrade Clockworkmod recovery is different way?
yea, thats how you upgrade
But ENG S-OFF is needed
If you use stock rom, then I suggest to go and claim your warranty.. or can go back to the shop get replacement

But you can flash 2.2.1 back from the recovery, can you? If so, you would get a working system back and upgrade Rom manager to the latest version in order to flash the newest recovery from there. Then you can give 2.3 another go.

Wildchild v3.3 ROM issues

Alright guys,
I've recently changed from Cyanogenmod 7 to Wildchild v3.3 and am having substantial issues trying to remove it. When booting without being plugged in, the boot animation plays non-stop (not quite a bootloop). When plugged in it boots normally but when unlocked it will not display the home screen and will remain black with the status bar at the top. This is accessible and so are basic functions.
I cannot use the keyboard as it does not display, all apps wont load and force quit and personalisation in the settings menu is borked too.
I understand I've loaded a dodgy ROM so lets steer clear of that. but now I cannot boot to bootloader or recovery mode, even with fast boot turned off. I can however boot the safe mode. If anyone can point me in a direction of how to flash a new ROM remotely or find a back door to recovery mode. That would be just swell
Cheers boys.

I think u need to reflash recovery. Also format the system, data partition manually after u flashed recovery. Wipe data, dalvik, battery stats and install again. Are u s on or s off u, need to post these specifications when posting problem.
The plugin boot thing only happens if u flashed wrong ruu. Anyways first do the above thing and also let us know ur specifications.

Dont panic. You can flash via adb. You are s-on and nothing can go wrong. You should not have entered into the safe mood. Because it by definition would try to restore original htc recovery that is it has already killed the custom recovery. Its no big problem. If u flash recovery it will be ok.
Just install android sdk tool and flash custom recovery. I guess its already installed if u have rooted ur phone yourself. If not wait a little. I gotta search for the post with which i enabled adb. Wait OK? Did U apply any RUU?
Edit: Are U sure that u cant enter into hboot mode means after turning phone off if u press vol down+ power nothing happens???
Edit: See this video and follow the instructions And flash recovery with help from here no.4 read the full post to be safe.

I've tried both now and it just boots to safe mode, there are no additional details on start up, only the boot animation. Which runs for AGESSS. Still can only access settings and phone, keyboard doesn't work and cant access apps or home screen.
What should i do now?

1. Download the attched file. Put it in your memorycard.
2. Press and hold Power with volume down pressed for 5 seconds
3. Wait while it completes loading, it will ask in the screen, press volume up.
4. Remove the PG76IMG.zip from memorycard.
5. Now again Press and hold Power with volume down pressed for 5 seconds and select recovery from the screen (select using vol up & down, select using power.) You should be in the recovery.
If it does, its fixed. U can flash new roms, instructions should be in the rom posts. Look in development section.
Edit: If U see ***LOCKED*** above MARVEL PVT SHIP S-ON RL in your HBOOT screen, means U need to unlock ur bootloader. In that case I'm pretty sure U had applied wrong RUU. Anyways that can also be fixed with some extensive research....
im pretty sure if your s-on it will not allow you to flash the wrong ruu. but sounds like you had a borked recovery, reflashing recovery than your chosen ROM should fix it.

I've had similar issues earlier today. Read my thread, maybe it'll help.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2759524
EDIT: If the screen 'hangs' press power button + volume up, wait for the screen to turn black and press volume down. That should get you into your bootloader!

Need some help daorderdillon...I have an HTC One M8
I wanted to flash to the UNROOTED Google Play Edition...so I rooted, TWRP'ed and did the S-OFF
and then tried to flash the ROM while in RUU mode...it gave me back a "41 error"...
so I tried to change the ModelID in the android.txt file...flashed, and then my HTC One M8 kept going into the HTC logo screen with 4 triangle error screen
When I do fastboot oem reboot, it gets me back into the device - but any normal restart after, and I'm back in the HTC logo error screen
I can't go into recovery mode either - using the POWER and UP / DOWN buttons or through the software...
Stuck, and I really don't know what to do
Thanks in advance!

Have you tried flashing a stock recovery via fastboot? Or flash TWRP again then flash a stock nandroid backup from the backup/recovery thread?
m8 white screen
Good evening community
I think I bricked my M8. Tryed to flash a custom ROM, unrooted and installed it but didn't liked and decided to go back to stock ROM. Went to TWRP and wiped one position more than needed - data. So now my M8 booted just into white screen with HTC logo, power off doesn't work at all, hard reset combination doesn't work, power on + volume up - doesn't work. It's always on and CMD says <waiting for device>
Who can help me?
Thank you in advance
Edit: got into bootloader, thanks to Niorun post edit.

For this phone, as long as the screen comes on, its almost certainly not bricked.
Being stuck with OS not booting is a common thing when flashing ROMs. It just happens from time to time for one reason or other. Folks that freak out about this (and think their phone is bricked) need to relax and learn some basic recovery steps.

Wiping data will not make the phone get stuck on the HTC logo screen. Wiping data just erases user data. So the phone would have just booted into the OS, but with no previous user data present any longer. Failure to boot was for some other reason.

Power + Vol Up reboots the phone, this should always function as long as the screen comes on.
Power + Vol Down to boot into bootloader similarly should always work as long as the screen comes on. Failure to do so is almost always a matter of user error, not performing the button combo correctly (either not pressing vol down fast enough, or letting go of it too early).
Power + Volume Down
So, in response to

Pressing Power + Vol Up does show the HTC screen for me, then it goes black.
Pressing Power + Vol down doesn't do anything.
Am I following the instructions correctly?

Try it this way:
1) Reboot the phone using Power+Vol Up
2) The moment the screen goes dark to reboot and before the white HTC logo screen appears, let go of the buttons, and hold the Vol down button. Do not let go of vol down until you see the bootloader screen
3) If the bootloader doesn't appear, you either started pressing Vol Down too late, or let go of it too early. Just do the steps again until you get it right.
Clarification
I have to anticipate when the screen is going go from black to showing the white HTC logo? Then do vol down then?
htc m8 brick
i too am having issues with a bricked htc 0ne m8. We purchased the phone as-is really cheap. its freezes while booting up. i can get into fastboot and recovery just fine. i have been successful in installing ruu files but the ruu file doesn't fix the "boot loop" freeze at startup issue. The device is s-on still which sucks because i can't find a method of achieving s-off in fastboot mode. i was able to unlock the bootloader, hoping that it would help and now the ruu files won't work anyone. now i can't get the bootloader to lock through the method that htcdev.com tells me to use. ive also tried to install update through adb sideload through recovery without success.
so i have a s-on, unlocked bootloader htc m8 that i still can't get it to boot up.
any help would be appreciated.

I just timed it (in my head, not with a stopwatch), and you have about 3 seconds while the screen is black, before the HTC logo screen appears. Plenty of time to let go of the power and vol up buttons, and hold the vol down button.
The reason I say "the moment the screen goes dark" is that some folk wait too long, and start pressing vol down when the HTC logo screen is already up. By then, its too late.

Need more info.
What hboot number?
What radio numer?
What CID (or original carrier version)?
What RUUs did you try?
Don't know what method HTCDev says to relock the bootloader, but as long as you can still get into fastboot mode, its simply the command: fastboot oem lock
Also, there is no other currently working s-off method aside from sunshine (which requires booting into OS) so you can stop looking for one.
I "Softbricked" my htc one m8 AT&T
i recently rooted it and made 4 back ups. I deleted two of them and tried to roboot to fastboot. but it says 'No OS installed" . My computers reconize it as a disk drive and when i click on it, it asks me to insert a disk...Please, ANYONE with information that will help, share

Download a ROM on your PC, transfer it to your extSD, put that in your phone and flash it in recovery.

Well, you say you can't get in the bootloader or recovery, have you tried to hold down the power button and volume up button, and then when the screen goes off switch to power and volume down? That should take you to your bootloader! If you can get there I would guess you would have a backup in recovery

As I said in another post. Try holding down the power button and volume up button, then when it turns off switch to power and volume down! That should take you to bootloader.

Try this, this is what I did to unlock and root mine along with installing twrp. You can change your recovery and relock the bootloader. It has an option to switch to s-off but idk if it works

Do you realize you are responding to old posts, the most recent of which is over 3 months old?
You also responded to my post, as if I was having an issue. I was the one giving help/advice.

It doesn't. The tool is very outdated, and I typically (virtually always) recommend against using it for that reason. The toolkit uses the old firewater s-off method, which hasn't worked since December 2014.
When I said there is no other working s-off method besides sunshine (and to stop looking for one), it was a statement of fact, not a guess.
I need some help, I have a m8 rooted and to make an update from htc (I have te stock rom) I have flash de stock recovery (te old one was the twrp) but now after the update de phone is stuck in the htc logo, I can enter in the fastboot but I dont know what to do and what direction I should take
Follow my steps if your phone is not booting up.
1. Lock bootloader if you have unlocked bootloader.
2. Download HTC One M8 4.16.401.10 Stock Lollipop RUU [0P6BIMG] ( search google because I can not post link since I am new forum member).
3. Rename the downloaded RUU to 0P6BIMG and send the zip file to your phone SD Card.
3.Reboot your phone in to the bootloader mode by powering off the phone and rebooting with Power button and volume down or use fastboot mode command : adb reboot-bootloader.
-This way our phone will automatically detect the RUU file that you pasted in SD card (step 3) and flash it.
Your HTC One M8 is alive

The advice given here is good, except it assumes too many things. There is the assumption of S-On, and of current firmware version. Also, if you are using ADB to reboot to bootloader, the user might as well fastboot flash the RUU.zip, or run the RUU.exe that is also available.
@W_KuP, Post the results of fastboot getvar all (edit out your IMEI and serial# ~ that's private info)
If you are indeed on WWE/International firmware, that RUU.zip will work for you. Download link here.
If you are S-On, you will need to relock your bootloader first. In fastboot: fastboot oem lock. If you are S-Off there is no need to relock your bootloader.
