Solution: Stuck on HTC screen before recovery mode when trying to root using guide - Desire General

I have tried everywhere to find a solution to this problem. Google searched many hours revealved that there are quite a handful of people that has the same problem and no one was able to give them any strong help. People were told to run RUU rom, unbrick the usb or were just told their device is bricked.
I really want t rooted device so I tried and searched many hours and with trial and error, I rooted my device.
This short guide is meant for people that has the exact same problem.
Hope it will help at least one person!
The problem was the phone getting stuck at the HTC logo before when trying to get to the screen with a phone and a warning triangle( i.e just before recovery mode) on step 7 of the "Guide to root using Windows, MAC OS X and Linux" in the "[TUT]Complete upgrading guide(root, unroot, flashing ROM & updates) " guide.
Just to make sure you guys had the exact same problem I did, I originally had a bootloader 0.75 before doing any of the steps and after running step 1 in the r5 root files, it went to version 0.8.00
Steps:
1. Go find the guide posted by Paul. Can't post outside link here. Just google it.
2. Download the files for bootloader 0.8.00 which should be the r6 root files.
3. Now extract to your C drive on your pc like you did for the r5 root files. then with your desire on the fastloader screen, connect to pc via usb and in the r6 root files, run the step 1.
4. Now attempt to go to the screen with a phone and a warning triangle which you previously couldn't. you need to get to this screen to run your step 2 on the r5 root files.
You should now be at the recovery screen!!! YAAAA!!
Now just follow the rest of "[TUT]Complete upgrading guide(root, unroot, flashing ROM & updates) " guide.
Hope it helps!! Any questions I would help out if I can!

hi mate,
I have exactly your problem: can't acces recovery - htc logo screen appear
I tried everything and didn't work.
I tried as you said with Paul R6 first step and when I want to get into recovery the logo screen just appear
just can't find a solution to bring it back.............

Not sure how it applies to this, but I had the same problem. But I cleared the dalvik cache and the user data area using the recovery menu. Then it booted fine into my custom ROM.

Which bootloader version you on now?
I am still only an noob in rooting but it worked for me... let me think what else I did...
Another question, are you on Orange as well? Starting to wonder if it's an Orange thing. Other people's root is pretty straight forward
Don't worry too much if it doesnt work out. The last resort is to do an RUU on the phone, I think. I don't think it's possible to brick an android phone.

The problem was that we couldn't even get into the recovery menu.

Not a problem with Orange users as mine was straight forward. Have you's tried this? Easier method of rooting.

does it still do the same if you try booting without your SD card in your phone?

If you are orange and now have hboot 0.8 then you must have the exact same condition I had.
Try connecting your phone to the pc again on the fastboot screen and try to run the "step1-windows" in the r6-desire-root-alt folder again.
Keep on trying!! Dont give up!!

i made the step 1 and everything was ok, no error, but still no recovery and didn't start the os, just bootloop on htc logo screen - what could it be??

# Navigate to the 'BOOTLOADER' and then 'RECOVERY' option on the menu, using the volume buttons to move and the power button to select.
# When a black screen appears with a red triangle, press and hold 'Volume Up' then tap 'Power'.
# Your device should now be at the 'recovery' screen. Select the 'wipe data/factory reset' option, then select the option to 'Apply sdcard:update.zip'. This will take a little while, so go make a nice cup of tea. When the flash has finished, reboot, and you are DONE! smile.gif

thanks mate, I know these steps, the problem is that when I press the power button (within the hboot menu on the line of recovery) didn't appear the black screen with exclamation mark, I just got in to the htc logo boot screen, nothing else !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Flash Stock RUU and start again.

If it still doesnt work, like lollylost100 says, flash RUU while it's on the fast load screen.

[Q] Stuck in rooting process and need some help

I tried rooting my Tmobile branded Desire with the coldgardmethod i followed the procedure and everything went fine untill i fllowed the next steps
- In the terminal window, enter either 'step1-windows.bat', './step1-mac.sh' or './step1-linux.sh' as appropriate.
- Navigate to the 'BOOTLOADER' and then 'RECOVERY' option on the menu, using the volume buttons to move and the power button to select.
- When a black screen appears with a red triangle, press and hold 'Volume Up' then tap 'Power'.
I proceeded with step1-windows.bat after this I navigated to bootloader and choose recovery this is where the problem started and my phone freezes and is stuck in the pink tmobile boot circle. I never get to the black screen with the red triangle.
I've been trying since to boot my phone, i can get into the bootloader but when I choose boot or recovery it freezes. Anyone have a suggestion?

[Q]Recovery Issue

Hello all,
currently running Modaco's rooted official fro-yo update (free version, not kitchen)
so yes i am already root.
i have a hboot 0.83 desire with the SLCD screens. i have used the patched image and used unrevoked method to root as modaco's method would not work.
i have 2 problems and any information would be grateful.
1)recovery issue
while holding down vol down + power and then selecting recovery to boot into recovery sometimes i will get into clockwork recovery and other times the phone will just hang on a white htc screen (not the black one when using wrong recovery!)
it is lucky when i do get to boot into recovery using this method.
i have tried connecting up the desire to the pc and running unrevoked again (using ubuntu 10.04) to try load the recovery menu again. same results though. sometimes i may get lucky and it will boot into recovery. a lot of the times it will just hang on a white htc screen for ages and not boot into recovery. this is frustrating when i try to change roms.
for example im having an issue with this current rom so i flash leedroid. all respect to him his rom is good. but i think its loaded with a lot of apps which i dont require.so i require to boot into recovery and adb remove the applications from the system partition and the data partition.
2)problem with modaco's rom
maybe not the right place to post this and i would receive better help at modacos website.
never the less someone maybe able to help me.
flash player doesnt seem to work at all on this.i visit the flash player site. it will usually tell you and show you a flash movie to say flash is installed or if not will tell you to download and install, in this situation pointing to market.
at this stage when it points to market i get a message saying "item not found"
so this means i dont have access the the full market for this device.
i could on the other hand unzip leedroids great rom and remove all the apps that i'm not intrested, resign and flash, but again i have issues with recovery.
any help would be appreciated
Thanks in advance
Hey,
There's quite a few people having the same issues.. some say it's because of LeeDroid ROM that's causing the issues, others say it's not. I for one am having the same issue only after I flashed LeeDroid. Since then I've flashed Open Desire and still having the smae issue.. never had the issue when I originally flashed Cyanogen.
However, someone noted that when booting into recovery.. do not touch any buttons or press anything until AFTER the SD check is complete. I tried this method.. and Clockwork Recovery loaded up just fine. It's not a corrupted image issue because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.. there's some sort of conflict somewhere.. that's my guess.
have you tried perma flashing a recovery using Unrevoked?
Thanks for the replies guys.
@Quazis
intresting that you mentioned leedroid. i too had flashed that and to think of it i bleieve i've had problems since then when i wanted to revert to modaco's 2.2 official fro-yo release.
thanks for a reply to the matter. when i boot pressing volume down and power into the bootloader, then select recovery from there, press power to select and then i do not press any buttons until recovery is installed. but i will try again.
@LennyUK
whats perma flashing?
i have flashed using unrevoked and i have to select a custom recovery image and select the SLCD image.
could you please explain further?
i have also tried to redo this process when booting into recovery failed using other attempts.
thanks for your help guys
i may create a gold card and flash the generic RUU with hboot 0.83 onto the vodafone branded desire and then unrevoke that in an attempt to fix the problem
hi guys,
hallo to everybody, greats job here!
I'm just wondering witch is the right recovery image to use with unrevoked 3.1, I tried to use the default one and when I go into recovery mode my screen become black and I must to remove the battery before going on.
someone can please help me?
regards
Miniera77
Well with Unrevoked once used you boot holding volume down and power
It then opens the HBOOT screen, wait for it to do its weird loading thing then select "recovery" using volume keys and hit the power button, the phone should then say "HTC" and should then proceed to boot into your recovery (I use Amon-Ra this way and then clockworkmod if I need it via rom manager).
I have not had any issues getting into recovery this way at all.

Hi Lenny,
thanks a lot for your answer!
...my problem is that when I do the procedure you've written:
- root by unrevoked
- holding volume down and power
- waiting till SD checks
- select Recovery by power button
...I can see the HTC screen and after that everything is black, the phone power off by itself and I cannot see any Recovery Menu. Than I must to remove my battery to be able to use again the phone.
I've tried once with clockworkmod recovery image and once with Amon-Ra but nothing change... I really don't know how to going on!
grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
thanks a lot!
Miniera77
Miniera,
I think you have the SLCD version of the phone. If you're using the stock image, it won't work cause that's for AMOLED screens.
If you goto the Desire development section, there's a tutorial in there how to root SLCD version of the Desire with HBOOT 0.83. See what you can find in there and I'm sure you can get it to work
Or re-use Unrevoked, it has the SCLD compatible version of clockwork now.

i will try unrevoked again (for linux) and see if this looses my recovery screen blank or not. if it does i will flash the SLCD.img version again.
again could someone explain what prema flashing is please? lol
well just flashed
http://android.modaco.com/content/h...-froyo-pre-rooted-no-hboot-with-radio-deodex/
and everything works fine. except the recovery issue caused by the leedroid rom.
it took me 15 attempts to boot into recovery
got there and flashed this. and everything flies. sadly i had to reboot as i wanted to adb push some files from another build into this and well it took me a further 7 attempts to boot into recovery.
wish there was a fix for this

flash using the SLCD clockworkmod.img file found in the 0.83 hboot root guide in the development section. you will then see the menu
Just to update if anyone else reads. flashed the WWE 2.1 T2 for hboot 0.83 on and then re-rooted. fixed the problem and roots into recovery every time.
leedroid blames on bad nand sectors. i doubt a new desire will come with such a defect. but im not going to insult his work because its good, maybe not for me but its still damn good!
in the end ive solved my problem

[Q] Can't root and can't recovey

Hy,
I have a problem with my Desire.
A few week's ago the phone just start restarting when i use the internet browser, and get stuck when try to restart. I have to get out the battery and restart it.
I was to the place from where i bought and they told make me an HW reset. I make it right there, and surprise after 2 days it has the same problem without installing any software.
I try to make an root with unrevoked but on the second reboot the phone stuck in the boot screen. The unrevoked app "wait for reboot". I had to get out the battery.
I try a few more times but without success. In one of the times when i tried i got from app "Internal error: failed to unlock NAND flash".
My phone is still S-ON. After all of this I tried an recovery but i got a black screen with a red triangle and an exclamation icon.
What a should do?
Thank you!

To get to the alternate recovery;
First go to Normal recovery (Red Triangle) by maintaining Vol Down + Power
and then press Vol Up + Power
This will bring you to another recovery menu where you can : Reboot , Flash from sd , Wipe Data/factory ,Wipe Cache
This will allow you to recover/flash.
When I pressed Vol Up + Power I got
"E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command" It's normal?
and a menu with:
Reboot system now
Applay sdcard:update.zip
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
If I press "Wipe data/factory reset" I get the following:
7 x No
1 x Yes -- delete all user data
3 x No
It's normal?
Thank you!
yes, it's a normal menu. Exactly like I told you.
The apply SDcard Update.zip, is assumed to be the flash update you downloaded recently.
Thank you!
Can you told me why I can't root my phone.
In the first post I attached a print screen with the feedback from the method flash with AlphaRev.
Thank you!
That's S-Off not rooting

The print screen what you have post in the first post is the procedure of S-OFF your phone...
S-OFF is used to resize nand partitions, not for flashing a room... For roms like DATA2SD, DATA2EXT, DATA2WE you don't need to be S-OFF!
READ THIS BEFORE POST:
ROOT TUT here you will find all the information - how to root and flash a rom!
I will retake this post for not starting another one.
Like I said in the first post:
"A few week's ago the phone just start restarting when i use the internet browser, and get stuck when try to restart. I have to get out the battery and restart it.
I was to the place from where i bought and they told make me an HW reset. I make it right there, and surprise after 2 days it has the same problem without installing any software."
I finally root my phone an I installed GingerVillain 2.0, and I have the same problem. .
Another thing that I observed it's that when the phone restarts it tries to boot, it restarts again (not all the time makes a second restart).
Thank you!

[Q] Make ClockwordMod complete backup?

Hi,
I recently rooted my phone through VISIONary+ r14 and today downloaded ROM Manager. I flashed ClockworkMod Recovery, but I can't back up my current ROM (stock/branded). I want to make a complete 100% backup of my current phone to be able to restore later if I need to.
However, I don't know how to do it. There is a 'Backup current ROM' option on ROM Manager, but whenever I do it my phone restarts showing the black screen with the phone and the red Caution exclamation mark + triangle, so I have to hold Volume Up and the Power button to restart my phone.
What do I do?
Also, it may be worth mentioning my Desire HD is a Vodafone Australia branded phone which hasn't been updated at all.
Well, the triangle image thingy means you dont have recovery flashed...
So, you have to choose 'Flash ClockworkMod Recovery' first. - That wil download a file from the internet and install it for you, so make sure you have internet connection
That will flash/install a recovery for you, in which you can create a backup.
Oh and i think you need to S-OFF your phone before installing recovery (im not sure about that but thats what i've heard)
click here for S-OFF http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403 --the last process says that after S-OFF you can install CWM recovery

Can you confirm if you did this separately to ROM Manager or as per above, used the Flash Recovery option in ROM Manager?
Have you confirmed you do have root?
If you reboot into recovery do you get to the clockworkmod recovery screen? What version is it?
If root can't be confirmed, re-do the visionary method. If root is confirmed but can't get to CWM-R do as per above and flash recovery from RM console.
Yes, I can confirm it is rooted.
I just ENG S-OFFed, so I'm going to try flashing recovery once again, although I'm still pretty sure it worked before that since Clockworkmod says "Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.0.2.6, Latest Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.0.2.6"
Will I do damage flashing it again?
EDIT: I pressed Flash ClockworkMod Recovery again and it waited for a little and then said that it was successful.
EDIT 2: Attempting another backup... And it's working!
No, you won't damage the it.
As I fly through different ROM's and do lot's of restores and backups I often have times where I need to reflash recovery.
look uot the link in my signature and try to do what it explanes......
Do all fases of rooting and you will have a perfectly rooted phone.
Also follow suggestions of CodeNameUnknown1.
Try man....Try

Great news!! Glad you got it sorted so far.
So, I have a problem.
I pressed the Backup option in ROM Manager, and the phone restarted, I'm now in Recovery mode... But I have a very strange problem. I can't make any selections.
I can scroll through the menu options fine, but can't select anything. If I press the power/lock button, the menu goes away and the clockworkmod logo in the middle just brightens up. If I press the home or menu buttons, the same thing happens, and if I press them again the menu just reappears. The return and search buttons do nothing except vibrate. What the hell?
That's an odd one.
Can you boot into recovery by turning phone off then holding vol- press power button and go to recovery from there? Does this do the same thing?
If same then I would uninstall ROM Manager and flash the recovery again via fastboot (in which case you can download the 3.0.2.8 version (page 3 ish of the development forum). Then try again.
Then re-install ROM Manager (which will show wrong version but ignore it).
At the moment I'm having trouble trying to turn off the phone at all :S looks like I'm actually going to have to open this horrible battery cover.
EDIT: After a battery pull I tried holding the Vol+ button and power button but it has just booted normally.
I can't actually try the vol- and power because my volume down button simply doesn't work...
EDIT 2: Uninstalled ROM Manager, reinstalled, booted into Recovery Mode, now it's backing up right next to me! Yay!
So I assume that, once it's done, I just take one big file it makes and put it on my laptop or something?
EDIT 3: Okay, one more step and I should be completely rooted with no hassles.
Will this method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537) work for a branded phone? It says it requires a stock kernel. My phone meets all other requirements, but is the kernel of a Vodafone AU branded Desire HD 'stock' enough to work with this S-OFF tool? I would attempt it but I'm a little worried I might screw something up.

HTC One M8 (Bricked?) PLEASE HELP!

Hi there,
So recently I just tried rooting my HTC One M8, with the All-In-One tool kit. It was successful, I was messing around with it for a while, removing bloat wear, ect. Then I figured out about custom roms, and heard about CyanMod11. It turns out that it couldn't read my sim card for whatever reason, but it still worked and loaded up. Then, I tried Android Revolution. THAT one worked flawlessly, besides the fact that I couldn't take screen shots for whatever reason. I should of just left it there. Here's where things go wrong. Then, I tried ViperOneM8. After that, it failed to load up and is now in a endless boot loop. I can't get into fast boot either. However, one time I somehow did manage to get into fast boot, but I didn't see the "recovery" option anymore. So... I'm out of ideas here. I'm really worried I bricked my device for good. My device powers on and everything, it just won't load up any OS, and I can't get into fastboot/recovery. Why I'm mainly worried is I failed to create a back up also. I'm running out of ideas here, and if ANYONE could help me that would be great.

first you posted in the wrong forum this goes in Q&A
second what do you mean it won't go into fastboot / recovery ? what happens when your in the bootloader ?
I need the results of fastboot getvar all to determine what files you need to fix your phone ( not you serial no. or IMEI)
most likely your on an older firmware and you have s-on and the Rom you flashed requires s-off and the latest firmware
Gah sorry, I find this forum layout kind of confusing. So this is another problem. I cannot access "getvar", it just says device offline, and I close that command prompt and then the next one just says "please wait," and nothing happens.
What I mean by it won't go into fast boot, is when I hit power + volume down it won't load anything. Here's a pic I found off Google, I can't get to this screen here.

Easy way to get into boot loader
Turn on your phone
When it gets into bootloop
Press and hold power+vol up+vol down until screen goes off
As soon as that happens press and hold power+vol down
You'll be in boot loader
And I must say you are a major noob
Navigate to hboot using vol buttons then press power button to select, you'll find recovery
These are just 2 modes hboot and fastboot
From fast boot you can select hboot and vice versa
And also getvar will work ONLY when you're in fastboot mode
Hboot mode is used for accessing recovery

I fixed my HTC One M8! Followed some advice on another thread and I just reflashed my TWRP, then I flashed the ROM again and everything is going smooth now!
