Unrooted but can't check for OTA's - G4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was rooted earlier on, and had frozen some apps via titanium backup, by doing this I had disabled OTA updates.
I have restored stock firmware (keeping data) by using a KDZ file, but now when I go to software updates in settings, I just see app updates, there is no way to check for OS updates?
Anyway I can re-enable this? I guess doing a full wipe and flash would re-enable it.

It seems like my frozen apps have carried over even though I flashed stock software. Short of re-rooting and unfreezing, is there anyway I can unfreeze them while unrooted?
I went into the hidden menu and pressed ELT test, and it force closes. This was definitely one of the apps I froze.
Any ideas?

[Q] How to stop or get rid of new OTA nag?

i've tried and tried to get some help running this update that i'm being nagged about, to no avail.
can someone please tell me how to just STOP the nag that i have to postpone once a day?
thanks very much,

I've seen people mention using titanium backup to freeze the device manager or updater app. Something to that effect.

thanks but i don't have a clue what that means.
i installed Kies on my pc to try and find the download and "push" it through with Odin, but Kies tells me my firmware is good.
i have NO idea where to dl the newest OTA from T-Mobile and then i'd have NO idea how to push it with Odin.
help, someone????
Titanium backup is an app from the market. With it you can uninstall system apps, or simply "freeze" them, meaning they are still there but no longer allowed to run.
"Device management" is the system app that's notifying you of the available ota update.
So, to answer your original question, download titanium backup and use it to freeze device management in order to get rid of the ota notification.
All this assumes of course that you are rooted and running a custom ROM. If you aren't on a custom ROM, then I wouldn't understand your wanting to avoid the update, as it appears it doesn't affect your ability to root, and may not even unroot your device.

Will anything else be affected if you freeze that app?

I've had mine frozen for a couple days to avoid getting that notification, and haven't experienced any fc's or other problems.

i wasn't trying to avoid it, i was originally trying to install it, but Clockwork wouldn't let me; a couple people in here tried to offer 'halfway' help, but stopped answering my questions, so i mainly just wanted to get rid of the nag, since the mod i flashed got me to 2.3.6 anyway.
turns out that Perfect Backup let me clear the Device Mgmt data, and that got rid of the nag. so i didn't have to pay for Titanium Backup (can't freeze stuff unless you pay for it).
so the resolution is that once i'd flashed to 2.3.6 the OTA was just in some kind of cache, i guess, and all i had to do was clear it.

i just went through the exact same problem. go get Deodexed KL1 (i think it's a stock ROM) and it'll do what the new update is going to do, flash you to 2.3.6.
flash the modem, too, with Odin (KL1 modem) and then find your Device Management 10.* and Clear the Data using Perfect Backup (free).
i was unable to get rid of that nag/notification until i did that.
there may be other ways of Clearing the Data for Device Mgmt - maybe in App Manager. In any case, when i cleared the data the nag was gone.

Flash Mr X's deodexed stock rom. the rom your device downloaded is designed to work with your phones stock recovery and not with clockwork mod. X's rom works with CWM.

Thanks guys. I should have waited for the hint. I ended up resetting the rom and it fixed the nag. So clearing the cache would probably fix it too and save me a lot of reloading of apps and settings.
[Q] Stop OTA for Samsung GS 2 on T-Mobile
Hello!
My wife has a rooted GS 2 with the stock ROM from TMO. I am concerned that the new OTA (T989VUVKL1)might break her root functionality, cause repeated update notification, or cause her phone to no longer work. Does anyone know the app or file I need to freeze or delete to stop the OTA from happening? At this point she is also getting the notification to update (eek!) At some point I will want to upgrade the ROM to the newest one assuming I can keep root access. Thank you for all your help and support!
Freeze device manager.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
Here's how I fixed it. Use a root explorer. Navigate to system/app and delete / backup both wssysync files. Reboot . Problem solved

Just freeze system updates with titanium backup.....or with the free version....backup system updates then uninstall it....that way you can always restore it for future use

Doesn't work that well.
Freezing does nothing at all to prevent it for me. And uninstalling, it'll just come back after a week.
after you uninstall system updates it will come back and ask you to update. if you have a kernel with cwm it won't let it install. so when the prompt comes up push update now. when it gets to the screen where it loads and freezes push and hold power until it reboots. it should go into recovery. when you are there wipe cache and dalvik. reboot system. it should not come back.

[Q] Need some help unrooting my phone

I rooted my phone back in January because I wanted to try out some of the different ROMs, but I never found anything that was as trouble-free as stock. Now I'm having trouble getting the OTA updates to work, and I'm looking to just go back to stock and reset my counter just in case I need to return the phone. What I'm worried about is losing all of my application data and settings and having to reinstall and set everything up again. Is there a way to do a complete reset but keep all my stuff? Every guide I've seen requires a factory reset at some point, and if I'm not rooted I won't be able to use TB to restore my apps.
Do I just need to grit my teeth and spend the few hours setting everything back up and losing all my app data?

Backup with titanium.
Flash stock firmware from sammy with odin.
Use cf autoroot to root.
Use tibu to restore.
Unroot with SU app
Profit
Also I think koush developed an app to backup that doesnt need root.

That makes perfect sense. Do you know if that would mess with the OTA updates after unrooting? I want to make sure my phone is in returnable condition after it's all said and done (triangle-away'd and everything).

Use triangle away before unrooting with SU. Wipe data/factory reset after unrooting. Then restore apps/data with koushs app (link above)

I was originally on a stock ROM (it was my nandroid backup from when I was trying out new ones), but I could never get the status back to original. I tried a factory reset, and that didn't do the trick (updates still wouldn't load), so I used Odin to flash the original stock ROM. I made sure to backup my apps with Helium, then restored them all after going through the whole setup/download process. Everything seems to be working fine, and I was able to get the multi-window update, but I can't see if the current update will work yet (I still have to wait 24 hours).
So in the end I didn't have to unroot or triangle away (at least not any further than I already did).

If you already received one OTA you can receive any OTA
You can disable network provided values and manually change the date one day ahead. Then you can check for updates again.

Software Update for Rooted Stock

My phone has rooted stock, MA7. It's been through one update without a problem. I just had to restore root. On the second OTA update, I tried Root Keeper. I kept root, but the update will not apply. It starts the update and a red exclamation mark appears on the droid and it reboots. No update applies.
Now, I am reminded over and over to take an OTA, 28.5MB in size. It fails every time I try.
How can I apply the latest update to my rooted stock? If not possible, is there a way to turn off the reminder?
When you applied root did you also install a different recovery? That would cause a fail. Bte the update isnt all that. Either way to remove notification go into titanium backup. Freeze system update. Exit. Then reboot to recovery. Wipe cache and dalvik and reboot. Done and done

I am using standard recovery. No custom recovery loaded.
Thanks for the info on freezing. I can freeze for now but I think I will have a problem at next update.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Actually freezing stops the ota notification indefinitely. Be aware in order to update prl and profile you will have to temporarily unfreeze that app.
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
Freezing software update didn't fix it. It keeps coming back. I tried swiping notification away and then freeze and tried choosing Install Later and freezing. Neither works.
When I get app info on the notification, it brings me to Google services framework. Can't freeze that.
Any way to flash the update via recovery or some other way to apply?

Did you wipe cache like I said to after freezing the app?
Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk 2
Whoops. Missed that step. I went ahead and cleared data. We'll keep on eye on it. Thanks again!
All you have to do is delete /system/etc/security/otacerts.zip and clear caches and reboot. You will never get it again.
Wrong thread.

I had a same problem. I searched threads and found latest rooted firmware. I used odin and phone connected to pc. My memory is not greatest today but I think I was called Mr Robinson 66 or something very similar. Ota root keeper doesnt work with latest update.

An update on this. Looks like I had to rename the otacerts file and reboot to get it to go away. Freezing system update and clearing data might have been a part of it too.

Update?

My wife and I just bought ourselves each a SM-T210R, I rooted both, left hers stock and flashed Rocket tab to mine. Now hers keeps getting an update notice, and under cache/fota there is an "update.zip" that is 5.90MB. Her build number is ; JZO54K.T210RUEAMG4. So my question is if I plan to leave her pad stock should I apply the update or if not is there a way (without changing ROMs) to disable the update? Note, simply deleting the update zip from fota only postpones the notice as it eventually re-downloads, and the notice pops up again.
Sent from my SM-T210R using Tapatalk
When you root your device, youn cannot update because you made change to system, also you can update via kies and you can disable update in the settings
Sent from my SM-T210R using Tapatalk
Thanx Rip, something told me the update would fail anyway. I must have overlooked the settings to disable it, got it now though. Much appreciated.
Sent from my SM-T210R using Tapatalk
Ok, so deleted update.zip from cache/fota using root explorer, disabled auto updates, rebooted, still got notice, however this time (after checking to insure the update zip hadn't re-downloaded) I tapped the update notice & selected install, it immediately failed & the notice was cleared.
